<p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/the-road-to-home"></a></p><div type="image" title="The Road to home, one hand dropping keys into another hand surrounded by dollar signs" height="1251" width="1668" msid="90278087" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Cash offers have become more prevalent as buyers compete with each other and investors for properties.</li><li>Sellers often prefer the speed and reliability of all-cash offers over traditional financing.</li><li>Here are six companies that offer regular people the chance to make all-cash offers.</li></ul><p>In today's red-hot <keyword id="11957054" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="housing-market" source="Orion">housing market</keyword>, regular people are searching for ways to gain equal footing with deep-pocketed investors and wealthy <keyword id="13210307" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="homebuyers" source="Orion">homebuyers</keyword> who are flush with cash.</p><p>A growing number are turning to companies that help them make all-cash offers, giving them a better chance of landing their dream homes. </p><p>With supply constrained and demand high, home prices are continuing to rise. They hit <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-us-cities-where-buying-a-home-got-more-affordable-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an all-time peak last month</a>, with the median home price in the US reaching $392,000, according to Realtor.com. </p><p>With all that competition, all-cash offers have risen in popularity, even among regular buyers.  </p><p>Sellers often prefer all-cash offers over traditional financing, since cash provides more certainty that the deal will close quickly with no hiccups. A <a href="https://www.redfin.com/news/most-effective-bidding-war-strategies-2020-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> from real-estate brokerage firm Redfin found that buyers who submit all-cash offers for a home nearly quadruple their chances of winning a bidding war.</p><p>Last July, 23% of homes were purchased with all-cash offers, up from 16% the year prior, <a href="https://www.nar.realtor/blogs/economists-outlook/cash-sales-rise-to-23-with-growing-entry-of-ibuyers-and-fin-tech-companies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the National Association of REALTORS</a>. Yes, some of those all-cash offers come from investors and deep-pocketed buyers with funds from a recent home sale, but part of the uptick is due to a growing number of companies providing services to help regular people make all-cash offers. </p><p>The process is fairly straightforward — once one of these companies pre-approves you for a <keyword id="12212082" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mortgage" source="Orion">mortgage</keyword>, they'll work with you to find a home and purchase it with cash on your behalf. Then you'll buy it back from them once your traditional mortgage closes. </p><p>Other companies, including Knock and Opendoor, operate using a slight variation on that process called cash-backed offers. They guarantee to fund your loan with cash on the closing date, even if your mortgage isn't 100% clear to close, giving buyers the certainty that comes with making all-cash offers.</p><p>Some of these cash-offer companies charge transaction fees as a percentage of the home price, but those fees can be waived if you use that same company to get your long-term mortgage, since the company then makes money by originating your loan. </p><p>In order to qualify for an all-cash offer, you'll need to provide the kind of information that you'd give to any other mortgage company in order to get a loan, such as credit history, bank statements, and tax returns. You'll also need to make an earnest money deposit to show that you're committed to buying the home, which is then applied to your down payment. </p><p>Some of these companies only operate in certain states, and the fees and requirements for all-cash offers vary. </p><p>Mike Delprete, a scholar-in-residence at the University of Colorado Boulder who studies the intersection of tech and <keyword id="11893295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="real-estate" source="Orion">real estate</keyword>, said he expects this model to keep growing. The more people lose out to all-cash offers, the more they'll be incentivized to work with a company to make one themselves, reinforcing the cycle. </p><p>"Right now it's really hard to buy homes, and anything — anything — you can do to sweeten your offer, or at least reduce risk, is of hyper importance," said Delprete, who is also an investor and advisor for Homeward, one of the companies offering this service. </p><p>Here are six companies that are helping buyers make all-cash offers on their dream homes. </p><h2><a href="https://www.ribbonhome.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Ribbon</strong></a></h2><p>Ribbon, founded by technology investor Shaival Shah in 2017, offers a cash-offer product with a fee that ranges from 1% to 3.25%, depending on how soon after the sale the buyer secures a mortgage. </p><p>So for a $350,000 home, the typical price in the US, with a 5% down payment and a $332,500 mortgage, the fee would come out to between $3,325 and $10,806. </p><p>Ribbon itself does not offer long-term mortgages, something Ribbon spokesperson Sean Piazza said is part of what makes it unique. The company does not have a lending arm or a brokerage house, as part of its founding mission is to eliminate impact on small lending and brokerage businesses, Piazza said in a statement. </p><p>The company currently operates in some of the hottest <keyword id="11916125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="housing" source="Orion">housing</keyword> states across the Southeast and Midwest: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, and Indiana. It plans to announce expansion into new states soon, Piazza said. </p><h2><a href="https://www.flyhomes.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Flyhomes</strong></a></h2><p>Flyhomes is a brokerage firm and all-cash offer provider based on the West Coast that aims to help first-time homebuyers secure a home through its services. </p><p>While other firms charge a fee, Flyhomes does not. It<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flyhomes-touts-no-cost-cash-offers-to-win-bidding-wars-2021-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> launched its most recent no-cost, all-cash offer</a> product in December, which subsidizes $1,200 to $11,500 in additional mortgage closing costs after the offer is made.  </p><p>This is funded through a portion of the broker commission paid to Flyhomes by the buyer.</p><p>The company operates in Washington, California, Oregon, Texas, Colorado and Massachusetts. </p><h2><a href="https://orchard.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Orchard</strong></a></h2><p>Orchard offers an all-cash product specifically designed for first-time homebuyers, which also has no fee associated with it. </p><p>The company operates in Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Orchard will start offering the product in Oregon later this month, according to spokesperson Mandy Menaker. </p><h2><a href="https://better.com/realestate" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Better</strong></a></h2><p>Known primarily for offering quick and relatively simple online mortgages, Better also gives homebuyers the chance to make all-cash bids on homes through its Better Cash Offer program. </p><p>In order to use Better Cash Offer, you'll need to start by working with one of Better's in-house real-estate agents. You'll also need to get pre-approved for a mortgage through Better Mortgage, the company's lending arm. Once you've done that, you'll be able to make an all-cash offer on a home. </p><p>There's no fee to use Better Cash Offer if you also get a mortgage with the company. But if you use another lender, you'll pay Better a transaction fee equal to 2.5% of the price you're paying for your home. </p><p>Better Cash Offer is currently available in 17 states and Washington DC. Check the company's <a href="https://better.com/realestate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> for a full list of available locations. </p><p>The online mortgage startup made headlines in late 2021 when CEO Vishal Garg abruptly laid off 900 employees over Zoom, a video of which went viral and sparked intense criticism. Better is now <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/better-employees-see-mass-confusion-over-who-lost-their-jobs-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly laying off an additional 3,000 employees</a>, but the cash-offer service is operating as normal, a Better spokesperson told Insider. </p><h2><a href="https://www.homeward.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Homeward</strong></a></h2><p>Homeward offers two main services: "buy with cash," for homebuyers just looking to upgrade their bids to all-cash offers; and "buy before you sell," which caters to homebuyers who want to secure their next home before selling their current one. </p><p>In each of the four states where Homeward's "buy with cash" offering is available — Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and Georgia — the company charges a fee of 1.9% of the home price for its service. </p><p>However, if you use Homeward Mortgage as your lender, the company offers a discount that effectively reduces the fee to zero. Homeward allows you to use any real-estate agent as your broker. </p><h2><a href="https://accept.inc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Accept.inc</strong></a></h2><p>Adam Pollack, the co-founder and CEO of Accept.inc, told Insider he wants to give all homebuyers a "superpower" — the ability to make cash offers. </p><p>Accept.inc provides an online portal for homebuyers to get pre-approved to make cash offers, a process that can take as little as 24 hours for customers who qualify  </p><p>Accept.inc then buys your chosen home on your behalf and sells it back to you once your mortgage closes. </p><p>Accept.inc is a lender, so you have to get a mortgage through the company in order to take advantage of its all-cash offers. The company touts its lack of additional transaction fees and will work with any real-estate agent of your choosing. </p><p>Accept.inc is currently focused on Colorado, a spokesperson said, but is actively exploring new markets nationwide. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A married couple in Georgia was arrested last week in connection to the <keyword id="11907536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="capitol-riot" source="Orion">Capitol riot</keyword>.</li><li>Charles Hand III and Mandy Robinson-Hand face four counts each.</li></ul><p>A married couple from Georgia was arrested and charged in connection to the January 6 Capitol Riot last week after a trove of Facebook posts, security footage, and anonymous tips led FBI agents to their door.</p><p><a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/defendants/hand-charles-iii">Charles Hand III</a> and <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/defendants/robinson-hand-mandy">Mandy Robinson-Hand</a>, of Butler, Georgia, are each <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/case-multi-defendant/file/1482876/download">charged</a> with four counts connected with their alleged role in the insurrection, including entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building. </p><p>Their Friday arrests come more than 14 months after a mob of pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election. </p><p>Prosecutors said the couple was captured on security footage throughout the US Capitol on January 6, identifiable by Charles Hand's red University of Georgia baseball hat. The Hands also appeared in open source documentary footage from that day, according to <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/case-multi-defendant/file/1482891/download">court documents.</a></p><p>An anonymous witness who knows the couple from Georgia later identified the Hands in screenshots from surveillance footage inside the Capitol, prosecutors said. </p><p>Documentary footage from the scene reportedly shows Charles Hand breaking off a piece of metal fencing from outside the Capitol and putting in his back pocket around 1:00 pm. Security footage later caught the couple entering the building through a breached doorway at approximately 2:30 p.m. local, according to court records. </p><div type="image" title="Prosecutors say security camera footage captured Charles Hand III breaking off a piece of metal fencing and putting it in his pocket." height="537" width="1074" msid="90281809" hostid="261"></div><p>At one point, law enforcement officers appeared to be involved in a physical altercation inside the building, prosecutors said, citing security camera footage. Charles Hand appeared to try and make his way toward the conflict, but his wife restrained him, court documents show. </p><p>Following the insurrection, both Charles Hand and Mandy Robinson-Hand documented their experiences in multiple Facebook posts. Prosecutors said Charles Hand described witnessing "thousands upon thousands of angry Americans marching onto the Capitol to protest and stop the certification of what I personally believe to be an election stolen from the American people."</p><p>Meanwhile, a tipster told investigators that Mandy Robinson-Hand wrote her own posts, in which she said, "We're in the capital [sic]. Taking our house back," and "We've been tear gassed etc." Prosecutors said the posts have since been deleted. </p><p><a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/investigations/republican-county-chairwoman-arrested-in-jan-6-investigation/YJI2APGSEBDGROFDAXVHKZE4HU/">The Atlanta Journal-Constitution</a> on Tuesday reported that Mandy Robinson-Hand is a local Republican Party official, serving as the chairwoman of the Taylor County Republican Party.  </p><p>Robinson-Hand did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on her and her husband's behalf. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/all-the-us-capitol-pro-trump-riot-arrests-charges-names-2021-1">More than 750 people have been arrested</a> so far in connection with the attack, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/capitol-rioters-who-pleaded-guilty-updated-list-2021-5">more than 200 have pleaded guilty.</a></p>

Zeile told Insider."And I was like, 'I'm not hungry.'"</p><p>He told her it would get rid of her hiccups, so she tried it. "I just know that I ate the spoonful of peanut butter and my hiccups went away and then we were ready to roll," she said, noting that she didn't remember the science that Ventimiglia said was behind it.</p><p>Insider looked into the science behind curing the hiccups, and it turns out Ventimiglia's advice was just lucky — peanut butter isn't a fail-safe cure. </p><p>Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm with many causes, according to Dr. Eric Voigt, who <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cure-for-hiccups-2016-7">Insider spoke to in 2016</a>. So, he recommended trying tasks that will force you to move your diaphragm differently when you have them. He also suggested holding your breath or drinking a glass of water from the opposite side, which forces muscles to contract in a way that stops hiccups. </p><div type="image" title="Moore and Zeile as Rebecca and Kate Pearson." height="1687" width="2250" msid="91629631" hostid="261"></div><p>As for why slowly eating peanut butter sometimes helps people cure their hiccups, internist Tyler Cymet told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/jun/06/scientific-research-hiccups-cure-cause">The Guardian in 2014</a>, "The peanut butter is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy, where you're controlling your breathing and thinking about what you're doing instead of getting anxious." </p><p>Ventimiglia may not be a scientist, but he is a great acting mentor according to Zeile. </p><p>She recalled <a href="https://www.insider.com/this-is-us-sterling-k-brown-hannah-zeile-advice-2022-3">some of the best advice</a> he ever gave her while they were filming the scene where Jack tells Kate he's an alcoholic in season two, episode two.</p><p>"He just said, 'Really just hear what Jack is saying. Really just listen,'" she said, remembering him reminding her not to think too much about what she was doing. The small direction helped Zeile zoom into what Kate was really feeling the moment she learned that her <a href="https://www.insider.com/this-is-us-milo-ventimiglia-different-versions-of-jack-pearson-2022-3">hero was more flawed</a> than she ever imagined. </p><p>The final season of "This Is Us" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on <keyword id="11940492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nbc" source="Orion">NBC</keyword>. </p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Nicolas Cage gives one of his most insane performances in "Mandy."</li><li>But it's the director of the movie, Panos Cosmatos, and coping with the passing of his parents, that led to Cage's wild role.</li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>There aren't many who can top Nicolas Cage in the crazy department, but the actor met his match with director Panos Cosmatos.</p><p>The filmmaker has built a fan base thanks to his beautifully demented storytelling, and that's only with one feature film under his belt.</p><p>2010's "Beyond the Black Rainbow," Cosmatos' feature debut, gave audiences a twisted and visually stunning sci-fi movie about one young woman's journey to escape a weird institute run by an even weirder doctor. With the beautiful sets and costumes matched with the trippy music and cinematography, it was evident that Cosmatos was a new original voice to genre filmmaking.</p><p>Eight years later, Cosmatos has finally returned with a new movie, "Mandy" (opening in theaters on Friday). And though this one continues his love of strange characters, gorgeous visuals, and thrilling soundtrack (this time using rock and roll versus the electronica sound of "Black Rainbow"), it will get a bigger profile with the casting of Cage as the star of the movie.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Here Cage plays Red Miller, a quiet man who lives in California's Shadow Mountains where he cuts down trees with a chainsaw all day, and every night he comes home to Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), his true love. However, when a religious cult kills Mandy, Red goes into a psychotic rage, killing everyone (human and supernatural) that was involved in her death. That includes battling bad guys with an axe he built himself and having a chainsaw duel.<p>But behind the insanity in both "Beyond the Black Rainbow" and "Mandy" is a lot of pain. Cosmatos channeled the depression of losing both of his parents in the last decade into writing the scripts for the movies.</p><p>The loss of his father was particularly tough, seeing his connection to movies. George P. Cosmatos died in 2005 and was the director of such classic Hollywood titles as "Rambo: First Blood Part II," "Cobra," "Leviathan," and "Tombstone."</p><p>"My love of movies comes from him," Cosmatos said of his father to Business Insider. "He loved movies more than anything. He was obsessed with them. We watched them together up until the end."</p><p>He said blackout drinking binges with friends was how he dealt with the loss of his mother, but after his father died he turned to storytelling, writing "Black Rainbow" and "Mandy" simultaneously.</p><p>"I wasn't aware of the therapeutic aspect of it at the time, but it helped me get through in a big way," Cosmatos said of the scriptwriting.</p><p>"Black Rainbow" got off the ground quicker financially, so it was made first. When Cosmatos went back to the "Mandy" script, he realized he couldn't finish it.</p><p>"Me writing 'Black Rainbow' was me alone in a windowless room going insane," he said. For "Mandy" he needed to be collaborative.</p><p>He brought on his friend, filmmaker Aaron Stewart-Ahn, to finish the script with him. And Cosmatos also felt that once he cast the Red Miller part there would also be a collaboration there.</p><p>Though it would take years, the money to make "Mandy" finally came when Cage signed on. Cosmatos said at first the two had an impasse as Cage wanted to play Red, though he wanted Cage to play the cult leader Jeremiah. But Cosmatos said it was a dream one night where he saw Cage as Red that sold him that he needed him to play the role.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The two got together and fleshed out the rest of the Red character. And though some of the most bizarre parts of the movie seem like classic Cage, in fact, they came from Cosmatos.<p>The scene when Red goes into the bathroom to take a bottle of vodka he's hid away and beings to chug it, pour it all over his wounds, and scream throughout was all Cosmatos' idea.</p><p>"I always wanted to have a scene that felt like that lost decade of mine and evokes me drinking with my friends in a desperate attempt to black out my consciousness," he said.</p><p>And there's the first line Cage delivers in the movie. He walks into the house, sees Mandy, and does a knock-knock joke:</p><p><em><strong>Red:</strong> Knock-knock.</em></p><p><em><strong>Mandy:</strong> Who's there?</em></p><p><em><strong>Red:</strong> Erik Estrada.</em></p><p><em><strong>Mandy:</strong> Erik Estrada who?</em></p><p><em><strong>Red:</strong> Erik Estrada from "CHiPs."</em></p><p>That was not improvised but from the script.</p><p>"When he came on the movie I went through the script and rewrote some of the dialogue," Cosmatos said, pointing out that the knock-knock joke was something his friend said that he never forgot. "Some of the things I just wanted to hear Nicolas Cage deliver."</p><p>Cosmatos doesn't know what movie he will do next. In many ways his first two movies have gotten him over the dark times in his life. But one thing he knows for sure is he won't be doing anything for a Hollywood studio. That's one of his biggest memories from watching his father work when he was a kid.</p><p>"What I learned about the industry was listening to him argue with people on the phone," he said. "Battling with producers and executives for creative freedom. And that doesn't even count the money coming in through Video-On-Demand, which the movie's distributor, RLJ Entertainment, boasts is in the millions.</p><p>When a movie is released on a day-and-date platform, meaning its distributor releases the movie in theaters and streaming/Video-On-Demand simultaneously, the theatrical component of the release is often used almost as a unique brand of advertising for the VOD option.</p><p>Because the major theater chains won't allow day-and-date movies to be played in their multiplexes (as they are not exclusively shown on the big screen), these titles instead play in limited release at independent chains and art houses, typically in major cities. So the reviews, feature stories, and any other attention from the theatrical release boost the movie's VOD exposure, as people who want to see the movie but don't live near one of the theaters showing it can easily order it on their TVs. Cage, in particular, has capitalized on this recently, as many of his movies in the last few years have been straight-to-VOD or day-and-date.</p><p>So RLJ Entertainment, which is known for releasing genre movies ("Brawl in Cell Block 99," "Bone Tomahawk") and has handled movies starring Cage in the past ("Rage," "Dog Eat Dog," "Pay the Ghost"), moved forward with the usual game plan for "Mandy." They released it in 75 theaters its first week, and had Cosmatos, Cage, and co-star Linus Roache show up for live Q&amp;As following some special Thursday-night screenings before its opening weekend, the hope being that exposure and the <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mandy_2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">94% Rotten Tomatoes score</a> the movie has would bring in the audiences that a limited marketing budget a day-and-date movie can't.</p><p>And boy did it work.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>David Livingston/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) Panos Cosmatos, Nicolas Cage, and Linus Roache at a special screening of "Mandy" before its theatrical release.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Though the movie earned a modest <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=mandy.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$225,723</a> its first weekend, there were sellout showings - from New York's Alamo Drafthouse to Chicago's Music Box to even an art house in El Paso, Texas. And then something unusual happened: Instead of people ordering the movie on VOD, they took to social <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> and demanded a wider release so that "Mandy" could open at a theater near them. <br /><br />The twitter handle <a href="https://twitter.com/CheddarGoblin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@CheddarGoblin</a> - named after the mac &amp; cheese puking green goblin featured in a <a href="https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/mandy-movie-cheddar-goblin-too-many-cooks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">commercial that appears in the movie</a> - suddenly became the destination for "Mandy" fans to get the latest updates on which theaters around the country were playing the movie.</p><p>And the hunger for the movie only increased in the second weekend it was out, as the number of theaters showing "Mandy" dropped down to 71. The loss of four screens may not seem like a big deal, but it was for fans living in southern California, because "Mandy" didn't show at a single theater in Los Angeles that weekend.</p><p>This wasn't because RLJ Entertainment had given up on the movie, it simply was going with its usual formula of decreasing its theatrical count in week 2 and letting VOD become a more attractive option to see the movie. The company had done its theater bookings long before the fan outcry, and that meant it couldn't add new screenings because the theaters already had a full slate of titles for the weekend (the movie playing in three LA theaters the following weekend).</p><p>Despite the loss of a major market, the movie saw a relatively minuscule 31% drop in ticket sales from its opening weekend - in fact, its <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=main&amp;yr=2018&amp;wknd=38&amp;sort=theaters&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$155,405</a> take was one of the largest for any indie movie that weekend.</p><p>"With a day-and-date release, it's really hard theatrically to break out, it's nearly impossible," Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer at RLJ Entertainment, told Business Insider. "So it's beyond our wildest dreams that the film is performing strong everywhere, on all platforms." (Currently, "Mandy" is in the top 10 movies to rent on iTunes in "independent," "horror," and "thriller" categories.)</p><p>Ward promises that, if there's demand, the movie will continue its theater run, so it seems the "Mandy" craze isn't going to end anytime soon.</p><p>"RLJ's theatrical booker is getting all these calls from theaters saying, 'We want the movie but we have contractual obligations with other films, can we have it in October or November?'" said Lisa Whalen, CEO of SpectreVision, the production company founded by Elijah Wood that's behind "Mandy" (along with XYZ Films and Umedia). "And that's one of things that's so thrilling for us, that people are saying 'No, this demands to be seen in the theaters, we are not going to watch it at home.'"</p><p>Ward believes we could be seeing the start of "Mandy" becoming what "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is now: a movie that continues to be played in theaters for its fans over decades. That means that baby boomer households in 2016 had twelve times the net worth of millennial households.</p><p>A gap in wealth between these age groups makes sense because baby boomers have had more time than millennials to accumulate wealth - but comparing that wealth gap to those of previous generations shines a new light on the findings.</p><p>In 1998, the average household aged 20 to 35 had a net worth of $103,400, while households aged 52 to 70 had a net worth of $747,600, MagnifyMoney found - roughly seven times more than the younger households.</p><p>That means the wealth gap between older households and younger households has nearly doubled in the past 20 years, climbing from seven to twelve times the net worth. </p><p>In that time frame, the average net worth for households ages 20 to 35 has declined by $2,600, while households ages 52 to 70 have seen a $452,400 increase in net worth.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-wealth-generation-experts-data-2019-1">Millennials have been called the 'brokest' and the 'richest' generation, and experts say both of those are true</a></em></p><h2>The Great American Affordability Crisis is to blame </h2><p>As a refresher, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/difference-between-wealth-net-worth-income-2019-1">net worth</a> is one's entire personal assets minus all their liabilities. MagnifyMoney's analysis reveals that millennials have more liabilities - debt - than any other age group studied.</p><p>Much of that debt takes shape in student loans, thanks to college tuition that has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-is-college-so-expensive-2018-4">more than doubled since the 1980s</a> - the national student-loan debt total is more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pay-student-loan-debt-or-invest-broke-millennial-2019-4">$1.5 trillion</a>, and the average student-loan debt per graduating student in 2018 who took out loans is <a href="https://studentloanhero.com/student-loan-debt-statistics/">$29,800</a>.</p><p>According to a report earlier this year by <a href="https://mlaem.fs.ml.com/content/dam/ML/Registration/merr9555_EarlyAdulthoodStudy_v05a_pages.pdf">Merrill Lynch Wealth Management</a>, 81% of early-adult households ages 18 to 34 carry a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-financial-success-debt-free-student-loans-rich-gen-z-2019-4">collective debt of $2 trillion</a>, including student-loan debt and credit card debt.</p><p>Meanwhile, as Mitra reported, rising housing costs also play a role. <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">First-time homebuyers today</span> <a href="https://studentloanhero.com/featured/millennials-have-better-worse-than-generations-past/">will pay 39% more</a> than <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">first-time homebuyers did</span> nearly 40 years ago, <a href="https://studentloanhero.com/student-loan-debt-statistics/">according to Student Loan Hero</a>. That means millennials are less likely to buy a home, making houses an asset more boomers than millennials have.</p><p>There's also the aftermath of the Great Recession, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-generation-gap-great-recession-financial-crisis-money-habits-2019-3">created a financial domino effect for millennials</a> that put them on a slow path to wealth accumulation. Americans Might Hate Their Government, But They Love Watching It On TV

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jamey and Lauren Bertram's house, worth over $1 million, was posted on Zillow without their consent.</li><li>A scammer listed the house for just $10,000, asking interested buyers to wire $200 to secure a tour.</li></ul><p>Picture waking up one day to find your inbox flooded and doorbell ringing with eager buyers all clamoring to purchase your home.</p><p>In this sluggish real estate market, it might seem like a dream — that is, if you're actually looking to sell.</p><p>For Kansas City homeowners Jamey and Lauren Bertram, the situation turned into a nightmarish ordeal when they realized their 5,300-square-foot home, purchased for around $1 million in 2019, had been falsely listed for sale on Zillow for a mere $10,000.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article289094909.html?tbref=hp">Kansas City Star</a> first reported the mixup.</p><p>"My wife and I both started getting emails from our friends saying, 'Hey, are you selling your house?' Of course, we're not," Bertram, who LinkedIn says is senior vice president at architecture and engineering firm Burns and McDonnell, told the newspaper. "I didn't know what they were talking about."</p><p>According to the Star, when Bertram first saw his home posted on Zillow, featuring images from the 2019 listing, it was for sale at its market value. However, within a few days, the price had been slashed to a fraction of its true worth: $10,000.</p><p>The Star quoted the listing description that Bertrams presumed was written by a scammer: "Once a year we sell one or a few of our homes to first time buyers for under $25,000. This is done to bless a family or individual that needs it, but also as a tax write off for us."</p><p>The listing description said that real-estate agents, lenders, investors, wholesalers, and attorneys should not inquire further, according to the Kansas City Star. It directed interested buyers to contact an individual named Mandi at a phone number with a Las Vegas area code.</p><p>The newspaper said when it tried reaching out to Mandi, it received a response instructing potential buyers to send $200 via an online banking app to the "owner's mom." It claimed a walk-through of the house would be provided, and a refund would be issued to anyone who didn't end up making an offer.</p><p>The listing was removed last week, but it wasn't clear how long it was live. Requests for comment to the Bertrams by phone and email was not immediately returned.</p><h2 id="7847af05-474d-485e-b33b-8a9593288287">These scams are relatively common</h2><p>Despite their brazenness, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-buying-home-got-scammed-by-real-estate-wire-fraud-2024-3">real-estate scams</a> are pretty routine.</p><p>In 2023, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center saw more than 880,000 complaints about internet scams totaling $12.5 billion in losses. That's a 49% increase in the amount of money reported lost in 2022, according to FBI data that BI's Jordan Pandy cited in March.</p><p>Real estate scams are an especially popular internet crime.</p><p>According to the FBI, real estate wire fraud is classified as business email compromise (BEC). In the FBI's <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.ic3.gov/Home/AnnualReports"><u>Internet Crime Complaint Center's annual report</u></a>, BEC ranked as the second-costliest crime in 2022, following investment fraud, with reported losses totaling $2.9 billion.</p><p>Data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ic3.gov/Media/PDF/AnnualReport/2023_IC3Report.pdf">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a> shows that in 2023, over 9,500 people from across the country filed complaints of real estate fraud.</p><p>Homebuyers are easy prey for scammers right now.</p><p>In a housing market burdened by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-outlook-home-prices-mortgage-rates-prediction-kevin-oleary-2024-6">high prices</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buying-a-home-new-construction-shortage-supply-mortgage-rates-housing-2024-6">few available homes</a>, many prospective buyers are eager to secure a good deal. Scammers, motivated by the potential to earn hundreds or even thousands of dollars, can turn to real-estate marketplaces like Zillow. Taking advantage of anonymity, they can create listings with appealing descriptions and unrealistically low prices to lure unsuspecting buyers.</p><p>In November, Galen Caldwell told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/million-dollar-seattle-home-listed-10245-those-interested-send-money-my-mom/RLGD7AER45HCNILXHNN5BU3IHA/">news station KIRO 7</a> that his million-dollar Seattle home had been listed for sale on Zillow without his consent, priced at $10,245. The incident was connected to the Bertrams' situation by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/zillow-real-estate-scams/">CBS News</a>. In Caldwell's case, too, a scammer told prospective buyers to contact "Mandi" in Las Vegas and send $245 to the seller's mother.</p><p>Both Caldwell's and the Bertrams' listings have since been taken down.</p><p>But Bertram said that he and his wife are still receiving inquiries from people who want to buy their home.</p><p>"I'm kind of stuck here," Bertram told the Kansas City Star. "People want to see the house. It's just a complete scam."</p>

Gosling laughed. "It's always fun."</p><p>During the performance, Gosling also shared moments with "Barbie" director Greta Gerwig and his costars Margot Robbie and America Ferrera. According to choreographer Mandy Moore, who worked with Gosling on planning the performance, Gosling felt strongly about paying respect to the women and wanted to make sure Robbie, Gerwig, and Ferrera were seated right in front of him.</p><p>"Then when we saw the seating plot, and I was like, 'Emma is right there. Why don't you go to those three first?' — because he was like, 'I just need to pay respect to these ladies. They are amazing.
