Sir James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer at Dyson, chooses the international winner himself. While some solve problems in our daily lives – like improved domestic fire sprinkler systems or folding plugs, others tackle global issues, like food waste, overfishing and providing neonatal care in refugee camps. Last year’s winner was a folding, recyclable, paper helmet for use in bike share schemes. Elegantly simple but still effective, it offered a compelling solution to a tangible problem. One of the first winners of the Award, back in 2006, was a young man called Yusuf Muhammad who won the competition with his idea for a domestic fire sprinkler system retrofitted to kitchen taps. He went on to set up his own company – Plumis – to sell the technology, and now employs 20 people and sells internationally. Last year he was even awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation – the UK’s highest accolade for business success. So the James Dyson Award can really act as a catalyst, helping these bright minds with an urge to improve our lives to realise their ambitions. <br /><br /> “This feels like the right moment to bring our technology to India – our air purifiers, humidifiers, vacuum cleaners and hair dryer. We focus on developing high performing core technology which sits at the core of our machines and we are confident that this can help to improve the everyday lives of Indian consumers. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>James Dyson, the billionaire inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, said his company was building a "radical" all-electric car for launch in 2020, with a commitment to spend 2 billion pounds ($2.7 billion) on solid-state battery technology and vehicle design.</p><p>Dyson said a 400-strong team of engineers had already spent two and a half years working on the secret project in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, developing the batteries that will power the in-house designed electric motor for the car.</p><p>He said on Tuesday he had not yet decided where the vehicle would be manufactured, although he had ruled out working with any existing auto companies.<br /><br />Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk recently challenged big carmakers to spend more on electric cars. The Dyson vacuum inventor says he's spending $3 billion on electric car and battery tech

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>WPA Pool /  Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Sir James Dyson giving British Prime Minister David Cameron a tour of the Dyson factory.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Dyson is building an electric car with government funding, according to a document <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/ad078d22-f127-11e5-9f20-c3a047354386.html#axzz43o4o5mhy" target="_blank">spotted by The Financial Times</a>.</p><p>The funding is being awarded to help "Dyson to develop a new battery electric vehicle at their headquarters in Malmesbury, Wiltshire," according to the document seen by the FT, which was part of the government's "National Infrastructure Delivery Plan."</p><p>Dyson is spending £1 billion over the next five years on developing a new type of battery<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-21/dyson-challenges-tesla-with-1-4-billion-battery-tech-investment" target="_blank">, according to Bloomberg</a>. Last year, <a href="http://sakti3.com/?page_id=46">Dyson acquired a battery startup called Sakti3 for $90 million (£64 million)</a>. The spinout company from the University of Michigan has a lithium-ion battery that uses new materials and has moved on from a conventional liquid electrolyte around today.</p><p>Sakti3's new batteries rely on "solid-state" technology, which can store twice as much energy as today's batteries and could be used in smartphones, tablets, cars, and even devices such as solar panels and wind turbines. Solid-state batteries work with solid lithium electrodes (electrical nonmetallic conductors), rather than the mix of liquid chemicals currently used in most phone batteries. <a href="http://sakti3.com/?page_id=47">The technology is safer, and cheaper to manufacture, too</a>.</p><p>British manufacturer Dyson, founded by Sir James Dyson in 1993, initially became famous for its innovative vacuum cleaners before going on to launch its high-tech hand dryers, which are now commonplace in expensive restaurants and corporate offices. The company also makes a bladeless fan. </p><p>When asked about the electric car, a Dyson spokeswoman told Business Insider: "I'm afraid we never comment on products that are in development."</p><p>The government document was reportedly updated to remove references to the Dyson car, according to the FT.
