Four tigers and three lions have tested COVID-19 positive at the Bronx Zoo in New York, authorities announced, weeks after a <keyword id="67270" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malayan-Tiger">Malayan tiger</keyword> at the facility was confirmed positive and six other big cats were said to be exhibiting similar symptoms.<br /><br />On April 5, the <keyword id="72580" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wildlife-Conservation-Society">Wildlife Conservation Society</keyword> that runs the New York zoo, reported that one tiger had tested positive for the new <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>, the first known COVID-19 infection found in a big cat, reports Efe news.<br /><br />The first big cat, a four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia, developed a dry cough and loss of appetite in late March, while Nadia's sister Azul, two Amur tigers, and three African lions also showed the same symptoms.<br /><br />"We can confirm that the three other tigers in Tiger Mountain and the three African lions that exhibited a cough have also tested positive for COVID-19," the zoo said in a statement on Wednesday.<br /><br />The test was done by using a faecal sample so that the animals did not have to be placed under anesthesia, as with the Malayan tiger.<br /><br />"The faecal tests confirmed our suspicion that all seven cats had the infection, and also determined that one tiger at Tiger Mountain that never developed a cough was also positive for the disease," it added.<br /><br />The wildlife centre said that "all eight cats continue to do well. New York, Apr 6 (AFP) A tiger at New York's Bronx Zoo has tested positive for COVID-19, the institution said Sunday, and is believed to have contracted the virus from a caretaker who was asymptomatic at the time.<p>The four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia along with her sister Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions all developed dry coughs and are expected to fully recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society that runs the city's zoos said in a statement.</p><p>"We tested the cat out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 will contribute to the world's continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus," the statement sent to AFP said.</p><p>"Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers," the statement continued.</p><p>"It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries." </p><p>All four of the zoos and the aquarium in New York -- whose virus death toll has topped 4,000 -- have been closed since March 16.</p><p>The zoo emphasised that there is "no evidence that animals play a role in the transmission of COVID-19 to people other than the initial event in the Wuhan market, and no evidence that any person has been infected with COVID-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats." </p><p>Chinese disease control officials had identified wild animals sold in a Wuhan market as the source of the coronavirus pandemic that has infected well over one million people worldwide.</p><p>According to the US Department of Agriculture website there had "not been reports of pets or other animals" in the United States falling ill with coronavirus prior to news of the tiger Nadia.</p><p>"It is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus," the department's website says.</p><p>In late March a pet cat was discovered infected with the novel coronavirus in Belgium, following similar cases in Hong Kong where two dogs tested positive for COVID-19.</p><p>All of those animals are believed to have contracted the virus from the people they live with.</p>The Bronx zoo said preventative measures were in place for caretakers as well as all cats in the city's zoos. New York, Apr 6 () Nadia, a 4-year-old female Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus after developing a dry cough, in what is believed to be the first known case of an animal infected with COVID-19 in the US, raising new questions about human-to-animal transmission of the deadly virus.<p>The tigress, along with six other big cats, is thought to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo keeper, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement on Sunday.</p><p>Nadia, her sister Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions had developed a dry cough and decrease in appetite, it said, adding that all the cats are expected to recover.</p><p>"Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers," the CNN quoted the zoo as saying.</p><p>"It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries," it said.</p><p> The test result has stunned zoo officials.</p><p> "I couldn't believe it," zoo director Jim Breheny said.</p><p>The coronavirus, first detected in humans in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, is believed to have spread from animals to humans, and a handful of animals, including two dogs, have tested positive in Hong Kong.</p><p>The pandemic has been driven by human-to-human transmission, but the infection of Nadia raises new questions about human-to-animal transmission.</p><p>According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), no other animals at the zoo are showing symptoms.</p><p> The animals were infected by a zoo employee who was "asymptomatically infected with the virus" while caring for them, according to the zoo. The Bronx Zoo has been closed to the public since March 16.</p><p>Anyone sick with the coronavirus is being advised to minimise contact with animals, including pets, until more information is known about the virus, the USDA said.</p><p> "There is no evidence that animals play a role in the transmission of COVID-19 to people," except for the initial outbreak at a food market in Wuhan, China. In addition, there is "no evidence that any person has been infected with COVID-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats," the CBS News quoted USDA as saying.</p><p> The USDA said "this is the first case of its kind" and "further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals could be affected by COVID-19."</p><p>The World Organisation for Animal Health says studies are under way to understand the issue more and urges anyone who has become sick to limit contact with pets.</p> According to Johns Hopkins University, there are more than 1.2 million coronavirus cases across the world and 69,479 people have died so far. Another cat in the second household has shown no signs of illness. </p><p>Both pets are expected to make a full recovery. </p><p>Eight other animals in New York were also confirmed to have tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday. </p><p>The Bronx Zoo <a href="https://newsroom.wcs.org/News-Releases/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/14084/Update-Bronx-Zoo-Tigers-and-Lions-Recovering-from-COVID-19.aspx">announced in a press statement</a> that five of its tigers and three African lions tested positive for the new coronavirus. </p><p>The zoo first reported on April 5 that a four-year-old Malayan <keyword id="9403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiger">tiger</keyword> named Nadia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiger-tests-positive-for-covid-19-bronx-zoo-in-nyc-2020-4">tested positive for COVID-19</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The complete skeleton of a giant panda has been unearthed in a Chinese emperor's ancient tomb.</li><li>It's the first time a full panda was discovered buried at such a site, archaeologists say.</li></ul><p>Archaeologists in China said they've found a giant panda's skeleton buried in the tomb of a Chinese emperor who lived more than 2,000 years ago.</p><p>It's the first time that a complete skeleton of the animal was discovered by experts in an ancient burial site, said Hu Songmei, an archaeologist at the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3230141/chinese-archaeologists-find-first-complete-panda-burial-2000-year-old-han-dynasty-tomb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per The South China Morning Post.</a></p><p>Hu's team found the skeleton facing the tomb of Emperor Wen, who was the fifth ruler of the Western Han dynasty and reigned until 157 B.C., the outlet wrote. The burial site is located near Xian, a city in Shaanxi province that was once the imperial capital of China.</p><p>In late 2021, the archaeologists unearthed the remains of a tiger, a tapir, a bison, a yak, a <a href="https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/takin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">takin</a>, and other animals in 20 pits at the corners of a royal garden near Wen's tomb, <a href="https://www.wccdaily.com.cn/shtml/hxdsb/20230803/199466.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported West China Metropolis Daily on Thursday.</a></p><p>But it was only recently that Hu's team identified one of the skeletons as a giant panda using DNA testing, the outlet added.</p><p>Hu told the outlet that the panda likely belonged to the Qinling subspecies, which have larger and rounder faces, and are different from the more common Sichuan giant panda.</p><p>The appearance of a panda near Xian could also indicate that the climate in the area was several degrees warmer than it is today, allowing for bamboo to grow there, Hu said, per West China Metropolis Daily.</p><p>However, it's also possible that the animal was sent from the south as an offering, she added.</p><p>In 1975, archaeologists found the skull of a panda in the tomb of Emperor Wen's mother, the Empress Dowager Bo, Hu added. But its torso was missing, Hu said.</p><p>The body of the tapir in Wen's tomb was a particularly significant find, given that the animal has long been extinct in China, Hu said. Ancient records mentioning tapirs have sometimes been suspected to instead refer to pandas.</p><p>Hu believes that the discovery of the tapir's remains shows that both species might have existed in China in ancient times.</p><p>The Malayan Tapir is listed as an endangered species by the <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/712/121745669" target="_blank" rel="noopener">International Union for Conservation of Nature,</a> while the giant panda is flagged as vulnerable.</p>

Mumbai, May 13 () Animal Planet has announced a new documentary "The Zoo: COVID-19 And Animals", which seeks to explore the effects of coronavirus on animals.<p>The special will see Dave Salmoni, Animal Planet's big cat expert, talking to a number of experts, from the World Health Organization to wildlife biologists, in order to find out how COVID-19 is affecting animals and what pet owners can do to safeguard them.</p><p>The issue came to forefront when a four-year-old Malayan tiger tested positive for COVID-19 at Bronx Zoo in New York.</p><p>The documentary will feature chief veterinarian of Bronx Zoo, who will give an update on the big cats and their treatment, and also Dr Peter Embarek from WHO's COVID-19 Task Force, who works particularly on all aspects of the virus related to animals.</p><p>In a statement, Salmoni said, "When news about Nadia the tiger came out the questions immediately began; what about my pets? How do I keep my animals and family safe? We're going to answer these questions and more through this documentary." </p><p>"We're speaking to a wide range of experts from the World Health Organization, to wildlife biologists, to veterinarians.
