In another major push to Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, <keyword id="16129" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> has decided to make mobile handsets in India. 
 
After Samsung Electronics, HTC has become the second major global smartphone maker to enter India to make handsets. 
 
The company has signed an agreement with Global Devices Network, which established a manufacturing and assembling unit in Noida three month back. 
 
Commercial production is expected to start in July as trials have started. 
 
Global Devices Network (GDN) managing director Nitesh Gupta confirmed to Economic Times that the company was in talks to start commercial assembling of HTC smartphones. 
 
GDN produces smartphones for Zen. 
 
HTC will pierce in the entry-level to mid-segment devices, priced between Rs 10,000 and about Rs 25,000. A quality control unit will also be set up at the manufacturer's plant. 
 
"Besides the evident duty differentiation of 6% to 6.5% that companies would get after making in India, they will also get access to a big market and labour," Jayanth Kolla, co-founder of telecom research firm Convergence Catalyst, told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, Sony, LG, Xiaomi and Motorola have also shown interest in manufacturing in India due to potential of the country's smartphone market Research firm Gartner's principal analyst Anshul Gupta told the financial daily that he expected Indian smartphone sales to grow 40% in 2015, up from 27% in 2014.

HTC does a Samsung, to manufacture mobile handsets in India

After a turn down from the high court, the Maharashtra government has knocked Supreme Court’s door, seeking permission to hold ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ show at Girgaim Chowpatty in Mumbai. 
 
The event, which will be held for six days starting from February 13, will draw huge foreign investors and will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
 
The high court had turned down Maharashtra government’s request, saying that permitting such a function was not in accordance with the recommendations of a committee formed to outline guidelines on what activities and functions could be permitted at the Chowpatty beach. 
 
Reportedly, ‘Make in India’ will draw around 10,000 people from 56 countries in the financial capital.

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=airbus">Airbus Group</a> said it exceeded the $500 million annual procurement mark from India in 2015 and now is targeting over $2 billion in cumulative procurement, covering both civil and defence, in the five years up to 2020. 
 
The last year's figure represents a 15 per cent growth over 2014. 
 
Overall, Airbus Group's procurement from India has grown 16 times in the last decade. Today, every Airbus commercial aircraft being produced is partly Made-in-India, a statement by the company said. 
 
"Indian suppliers are a cornerstone of our globalisation strategy," said Klaus Richter, Chief Procurement Officer, Airbus Group and Airbus, adding "Many of the projects with our Indian partners have been very successful and we aim to further strengthen these relationships in future." 
 
Over 6,000 people at more than 45 suppliers, both public and private, are directly engaged in providing engineering and IT services, aero-structures, detail parts and systems, materials and cabins to the group for several of its leading platforms, including A380, A350 XWB, A320 Family, A330, C295W, A400M, Eurofighter, Tiger and NH90.

Airbus leads by example in Make in India campaign, crosses $500-million annual procurement mark

With the aim of giving a boost to the <keyword id="6362048" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manufacturing">manufacturing</keyword> sector in India, Prime Minister Shri <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> will launch “Make in India” initiative on 25th September from Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The initiative will be launched at both national and state level. 

	“The Government is committed to chart out a new path wherein business entities are extended red carpet welcome in a spirit of active cooperation. Invest India will act as the first reference point for guiding foreign investors on all aspects of regulatory and policy issues and to assist them in obtaining regulatory clearances. The Government is closely looking into all regulatory processes with a view to making them simple and reducing the burden of compliance on investors,” said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in a statement. 
 

	The government has created a dedicated cell to answer queries from business entities through a newly-created Web portal. The portal will have an exhaustive set of FAQs that will answer the general queries of an investor, while a back-end support team will be set up to answer specific queries within 72 hours. 
	 
	“A pro-active approach will be deployed to track visitors for their geographical location, interest and real-time user behaviour. Subsequent visits will be customised for the visitor based on the information collected. Visitors registered on the website or raising queries will be followed up with relevant information and newsletter. Investor facilitation cell will provide assistance to the foreign investors from the time of their arrival in the country to the time of their departure. The initiative will also target top companies across sectors in identified countries,” stated the ministry. 
 

	The government, through this initiative, will also encourage domestic companies that have a strong potential in innovation and new technologies, to grow into global champions. The ministry will be focusing on promoting green and advanced manufacturing through these home-grown companies. 
 

	Currently, the government has identified 25 sectors that it will promote. These sectors include automobiles, chemicals, IT, pharmaceuticals, textiles, ports, aviation, leather, tourism and hospitality, wellness, railways among others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release specific brochures for each sector that will provide details of growth drivers, investment opportunities, sector-specific FDI and other policies and related agencies.
 

	It should be noted that Prime Minister Modi had first spoken about the initiative on Independence Day where he emphasized on the need to project and develop India as the manufacturing hub.

NaMo Fever Grips Indian-Americans At Madison Square

With investments in manufacturing, engineering and other sectors set to rise under ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’, it is also going to throttle employment scenario in the country. 
 
Experts say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative will create at least 80 million new jobs till 2022. 
 
"Skill development has gained enormous traction with Make in India. The plan to create 100 smart cities is also expected to fuel job growth," Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder of TeamLease Services, told ET. 
 
Also, if traditional works are rekindled as per the plan, it will create at least 10 million jobs a year. 
 
"There are encouraging signs that Make in India is positively impacting generation of jobs. Make in India has the potential to emerge as a force multiplier to provide the emerging workforce with new livelihood opportunities,” Chandrajit Banerjee, director general, CII, told ET. 
 
PM Modi wants to transform India into world’s manufacturing hub and under his pet Make in India campaign, 25 sectors have been identified that will boost investments and employment. 
 
It is evident that India has no dearth of talent but still the pool remains untapped due to a fragmented marketplace. 
 
“The Indian job market has witnessed a substantial upswing in the demand for new work profiles, especially in sectors such as solar energy generation and construction (green buildings, smart homes)," Rachna Mukherjee, chief HR officer, Schneider Electric India, told ET.

Addressing the joint session of the <keyword id="6356598" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhutan">Bhutan</keyword> <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="parliament">Parliament</keyword>, Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> said the new government is committed to make India-Bhutan ties even stronger. 
 
“Our hearts are always open for friendly relations with neighbours. A change in governance will not change that,” said Modi. “A strong and stable India is needed to make sure that we can help our neighbours with their problems. The stronger India will be, the better it will be for Bhutan and the (other) SAARC nations,” he said. 
 
“If India was to face economic problems, how can it look after its neighbours?” he asked. 
 
Modi also praised the Bhutanese royals for protecting the people’s rights. He said Bhutan has established democracy through awareness and the smooth transition from monarchy to democracy shows maturity in governance. “I congratulate the political family of Bhutan for securing development, protection of traditions and environment,” said Modi. 
 
“Enthusiasm visible in the voters of Bhutan is very important for a vibrant democratic environment... The most important quality for maintaining democracy is self-reliance. Bhutan is working hard not only for the present, but also for the happiness of further generations,” he noted. 
 
Modi also praised the Bhutan government for its focus on education. “(I am) delighted Bhutan has devoted a lot of resources towards education. When a country provides teachers to educate its society, it strengthens democracy,” he said. 
 
Modi said India would assist Bhutan in setting up a digital library to promote education in Bhutan.

Government Keen To Make India-Bhutan Ties Stronger: Narendra Modi

It won’t be that easy to enter defence sector through <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative as private players will have to go through a grilling process. 
 
A panel led by former DRDO chief VK Atre has suggested five areas and a three-step selection process through which private players will get manufacturing projects worth over Rs 10,000 crore. 
 
The panel suggests prioritising areas like aircraft, helicopters, submarines, armoured fighting vehicles and ammunition and only one company would be eligible for only one sector. 
 
It also recommended a minimum lock in period of 20 years. In case the private player is unable to perform, the government will have all rights to gain control of the firm. 
 
In order to identify private players, entry would be based on financial and technical parameters, followed by verification and then past performances.

In a bad news for Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s ambitious ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ campaign, growth of manufacturing activities in India declined to a three-month low In January, according to <keyword id="6358584" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HSBC">HSBC</keyword> purchasing managers' index (<keyword id="104215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PMI">PMI</keyword>). Notably, the rate of growth of the manufacturing sector in the country had stood at a two-year high in December last year. 
 
PMI went down to 52.9 points in January as against 54.5 points in December. If the PMI is above 50 points, it indicates expansion, whereas if it is less than 50 points, it implies contraction in manufacturing activities. 
 
Markit Economics, which compiles the PMI data, said, “Despite falling from December’s two-year-high level, the headline index remained consistent, with a solid improvement in business conditions in January.” 
 
When compared with other emerging economies, the growth of India’s manufacturing sector was not too slow. For instance, manufacturing activities China saw contraction for second consecutive month. Its PMI in January was 49.7. 
 
Pranjul Bhandari, HSBC’s chief India economist, said, “The manufacturing activity continued to signal improvement in January, though the rate of growth slipped to a three-month low. This could be partly attributed to consolidation after two months of impressive uptick.”

Modi’s ‘Make In India’ Off To A Shaky Start In 2015

The Indian Government is fighting tooth and nail on Twitter, defending any plagiarism charges against the ‘Make in India’ symbol that depicts industrial lion with wheels. 
 The <keyword id="439521" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="department-of-industrial-policy-promotion">Department of Industrial Policy &amp; Promotion</keyword> (DIPP) came into action when a news report by thenewsminute.com pointed out that there was a remarkable similarity between ‘Make in India’ symbol of a lion with wheels and a campaign of the Cantonal Bank of Zurich in Switzerland. 
 
The issue started trending on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, and people tweeted that “Even the Make in India lion was not Make in India?” 
 
DIPP Secretary Amitabh Kant countered allegations of plagiarism. 
 
"Since time immemorial Lion has been the official emblem of India. Stands for courage, tenacity &amp; wisdom - all Indian values," Kant tweeted. 
 
As per the report, the logo on the sponsored campaign of the Swiss bank was designed by Swiss designer Nadine Geissbulher, and was launched on July 4. India's campaign started in September 2014. 
 
The 'Make in India' campaign’s lion was designed by the Indian subsidiary of the US agency Wieden+Kennedy. V Sunil, Executive Creative Director of Wieden+Kennedy, defended any speculation of plagiarism. 
 
"For starters, the Ashoka is one of the strongest symbols of India, it's a natural and obvious connection - the four lions and the chakra - wheel of progress. When we decided to use the lion, that's what we were thinking," Sunil told Economic Times. 
 
Meanwhile, Kant said the industrial wheels design is just one of 30 lions, each represents a different sector - auto parts, textiles, etc. “This is amusing. There's absolutely no reason for a country like ours to copy some random lion off a train,” he tweeted. 
 
Kant also had the same explanation for how the design came about. "The logo is inspired by India's strongest symbol ever- TheAshoka emblem+ a bit of RBI," Kant said in another tweet. 
 
"We will take this head on. These allegations are being made by a competing agency with malicious intentions. When we had announced the campaign, we made it clear that the wheels were from the Ashoka Chakra. This is defamatory," a government official told the financial daily.
