<ul><li>In our latest episode of BTS with Insiders, we got chatting with <keyword id="212001" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agnello-Dias">Agnello Dias</keyword>, Creative Chairperson, Dentsu Aegis Network India and Co-Founder, Taproot Dentsu and <keyword id="343974" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Santosh-Padhi">Santosh Padhi</keyword>, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, Taproot Dentsu about a few campaigns close to their hearts.</li><li>They took us behind the scenes of popular campaigns like Pepsi's Change the Game and <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>'s Har Ek Friend Zaruri Hota Hai, among others.</li></ul> It was in 2009 that Agnello Dias (Aggie) and Santosh Padhi (Paddy), two people pegged as the hottest creative stars in Indian advertising came together and founded Taproot. Within just a few years of starting the agency, it boasted of an enviable roster of brands it had created campaigns for including <keyword id="54572" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword>, Airtel and Bennett, Coleman &amp; Company. Three years later, Japanese advertising major Dentsu acquired a majority in the agency. Over the past 11 years, with Aggie and Paddy at the helm of affairs, the agency has come up with some memorable, powerful campaigns that have helped brands tell wonderful, engaging stories. As a part of our latest series, BTS with Insiders, we spoke to the creative duo about some of the most memorable campaigns they have created together. Here are a few of the stories they shared with us. <div type="javascript" title="Facebook" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> Pepsi ‘Change the Game’ campaigns We all know about the cola wars of the past when players like Pepsi, Coca-Cola and Thums Up would all try to come up with irreverent campaigns, poking fun at each other. In 2011, Pepsi was the official World Cup sponsor. It was a brand that had always stood for irreverence, and everything that was anti-authoritarian and anti-establishment. In the past, it had roasted Coca-Cola when it was the official world cup sponsor with its cheeky, ‘Nothing Official About It’ campaign. So in 2011, when it was the official sponsor, its brief was unique. It wanted to say it is the official sponsor, while also making a statement that it is proudly irreverent. “During the discussion around the campaign, we stumbled upon the insight that the game itself had become far more irreverent than it was say 15-20 years ago,” said Aggie. The agency then decided to manifest this irreverence of the game by depicting a few key shots that the newer breed of cricketers had started playing. “Once we came up with the idea, the client was perceptive enough to see its power straight up,” added Aggie. The agency came up with five films featuring star cricketers and their trademark shots - MS Dhoni’s ‘Helicopter shot’, Virender Sehwag’s ‘Upper cut’, Harbhajan Singh’s ‘doosra’, Kevin Pietersen’s‘Switch hit’ and Tillekratne Dilshan’s ‘Dilscoop’. The campaign went on to become a huge hit, so much so that Pepsi replicated the idea in other markets like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. “It also was a very special campaign for us because it was perhaps for the first time that such a huge brand chose to work with a smaller, independent agency. It totally changed the game for us,” added Paddy with a smile. Airtel’s ‘Har Ek Friend Zaruri Hota Hai’ Before Airtel’s friendship campaign, the brand every year would come up with a campaign that would put out a world philosophy that could be appropriated by mobility, shared Aggie. “That was the time when all brands were trying to build the category, nobody was trying to take each other's market share. The brief given to us that time was that we don't see anything wrong in what we are doing by putting out a life philosophy about how the world is getting more connected except that our tone and manner is making us sound old-fashioned. The brand said that they didn’t want to become younger or exchange market shares. It just wanted to keep its philosophy, while saying it in a younger manner,” he explained. That’s how the agency thought of giving out a philosophy but not from a pulpit. The idea took birth when the agency started discussing about 3 am friends who one could turn to if someone was in trouble. And that’s how the campaign took shape. What also makes the ad memorable is the jingle created by music composer Ram Sampath, who was given the task of creating a song without using any real instrument. All the percussions in the ad come from things one might find in a classroom, including notebooks, dusters and even dustbins. The campaign went on to become a huge hit. <keyword id="6377547" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="adidas">Adidas</keyword>’ Odds In wake of the 2016 Paralympic Games, Adidas came up with a unique initiative called ‘Odds’ where para-athletes, primarily blade runners, were given a pair of the same side footwear instead of the usual pair that is sold to consumers. The campaign spoke about the inspirational story of <keyword id="2726242" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Major-DP-Singh">Major DP Singh</keyword>, a Kargil war veteran who lost his leg but not his determination. “We got the insight for the ad from a simple idea. One of the kids at the agency said what if we dedicate 2 left or 2 right shoes to para-athletes? We thought it must already have been done by some brand. We were really surprised to see that it had never been done and its such an injustice on the community that for years they had to buy a pair of shoes from which they could only use 1. So we thought we had to make this larger than life,” shared Paddy. They approached Major DP Singh who agreed to be a part of the campaign and the rest, as they say, is history. Paddy also shared a life lesson that he got from Major Singh. “On the first day of the shoot, we went to the top of a mountain at 4am where he used to practice to capture the early morning sunlight. Since the spot was far from the city, we travelled for an hour. He was an army guy and wanted a proper schedule. We gave him one and told him we will finish the shoot in 2 days. The packup for the first shoot was supposed to happen at 8 or 8:30 which got delayed by an hour or so. By the end of it, he wasn’t happy and went home. And he didn’t come to the second location. When the producer tried to reach out to him he said, ‘Please tell Adidas, Taproot and Paddy that I am done with my shoot.’ We were really shocked as we had a packed schedule. So I went to his house and asked him what happened. So he said, ‘I am an army guy and I follow schedule. If your shoot was getting delayed, someone should have come and informed me. I respect time and if I respect time, you should respect me.’ I apologized and assured him that something like this never happens again. So this wasn’t just a learning for me but for everyone else who was present at the sets that day,” reminiscened Paddy. <keyword id="5709" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-mirror">Mumbai Mirror</keyword> Mumbai Mirror is a tabloid from the stable of the <keyword id="6356641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-of-India">Times of India</keyword> group, a brand that Taproot had been handling for a while. The brief given to the agency for the campaign was simple, “The client said here are 6 stories we have broken, please showcase these stories. It was from there that we took the leap and said that newspaper is the voice that amplifies the voice of the oppressed. There were stories that would not make it to the national newspaper but its players like Mumbai Mirror that take these smaller oppressed voices and amplifies them,” said Aggie. Those who have watched the campaign know that it makes its point heard loud and clear. The idea was to deliberately make the campaign disturbing. “There have been opinions about why the film was so shrill, it could have been toned down. But in my opinion, when you are taking this stance it can be either disturbing or it can’t be this at all. Then it would just need to be a completely different thought. And that’s why we decided to make it that aggressive,” explained Aggie. Times of India – Farmer Suicide campaign The last campaign that the duo spoke about went on to become one of their most awarded one. Our country is no stranger to the disturbing news of farmer suicides ever year. It’s still an ongoing issue and the agency wanted to bring out the stories of these farmers who simply become a statistics every year. The agency used burnt hay to make portraits some of the farmers who had committed suicide, leaving behind families of 4-6 members. “These paintings were sold and whatever money we made out of, we gave to the family members because once the earning member of the families pass away, the others also die a slow death. This was what we did in the first year. In the second year, TOI got on board the Samaj Seva Charitable Trust. We did a TV commercial and some billboards, as a second leg of the campaign. Because of the simplicity of the campaign, it did really well. It did well for us too as we picked up a lot of awards. It looks like something made out of something but how lovingly you do it and how relevant you are, makes or breaks the campaign,” said Paddy.

The absence of Olympic javelin throw champion <keyword id="19968766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neeraj-Chopra" source="keywords">Neeraj Chopra</keyword> notwithstanding, there will be no lack of star power as the country's remaining top <keyword id="21541595" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="track-and-field-athletes" source="keywords">track and field athletes</keyword> vie for Paris <keyword id="22187624" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Olympics-berths" source="keywords">Olympics berths</keyword> during the National Inter-State Championships beginning here Thursday. The championships will serve as the final <keyword id="22187659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="qualifying-event" source="keywords">qualifying event</keyword> for the upcoming <keyword id="20242595" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Games" source="keywords">Paris Games</keyword> where the athletics events begin on August 1. Incidentally, the final day of the four-day championships — June 30 — also coincides with the <keyword id="19933819" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="olympics" source="keywords">Olympics</keyword> qualifying window deadline. Chopra will skip the championships as there is only a few days gap before the Paris Diamond League on July 7, in which he is set to compete. He competed in the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar last month, winning a gold. Last month, <keyword id="20386415" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Athletics-Federation-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Athletics Federation of India" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Athletics Federation of India">Athletics Federation of India</keyword> (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla had made it clear that except for Chopra, it will be mandatory for all the other athletes to participate in the National Inter-State Championships to get selected for the <keyword id="20006192" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Olympics" source="keywords">Paris Olympics</keyword>. AFI rules state that all the athletes will have to participate in the National Inter-State Championships if they have to get selected for major multi-sport events like the Olympics, Asian Games or the Commonwealth Games, unless the federation gives exemption on the request of particular athletes or their coaches. In the absence of Chopra, the likes of Avinash Sable (men's 3000m steeplechase), Kishore Jena (men's javelin throw), Ram Baboo (men's 20km race walk) and Parul Chaudhary (women's 3000m steeplechase) — all of whom have booked Paris Games berths by breaching the qualifying standards — will headline the championships. Other athletes who can book Paris ticket through world ranking quota like Jyothi Yarraji (women's 100m hurdles), Annu Rani (women's javelin throw), DP Manu (men's javelin throw), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men's shot put), Jeswin Aldrin (men's long jump), Praveen Chitravel and Abdulla Aboobacker (both men's triple jump) have also entered their names. Toor, an Asian record holder till a few days back, told PTI on Tuesday that he is dealing with a slight ankle pain and his doctor told him not to throw for three-four weeks. But his name figured in Wednesday's updated entry list of the AFI. Some of rising stars like sprinter Animesh Kujur, 110m hurdler Tejas Shirse — who recently set the national record — and long jumper Shaili Singh are also set to be seen in action. National record holder Manikanta Hoblidhar is also set to be back in action after missing the Federation Cup and his 100m dash duel with Kujur, Amlan Borgohain and Gurindervir Singh for the tag of the country's fastest man will be interesting to watch though none of them are likely to make it to Paris. Federation Cup 200m gold medallist Kujur will also be up against national record holder Borgohain in another duel. Almost all the members of the Indian men's and women's 4x400m relay teams that had booked Paris berths will feature in the individual quarter-mile events. National record holder 20km race walker Akshdeep Singh, who has also breached the Paris Games qualifying mark, is missing from the entry list. Women's 20km race walk national record holder Priyanka Goswami, who has also qualified for Paris Olympics, is not in the list. The opening day will see just three finals — women's hammer throw, men's and women's 500m races. A few athletes from Sri Lanka and Maldives are also taking part in the championships.

India's top athletics stars vie for Olympics berths at National Inter-State Championships

New Delhi, Jan 15 () Allaying concerns over reports of its weakening financial health, Yes Bank on Wednesday said the lender's capital adequacy is at a comfortable level and efforts are being made to further strengthen it.
The bank has asked its customers not to pay heed to rumours about its financial health.
"The bank's overall Capital Adequacy Ratio is comfortably above regulatory requirements and all efforts are being made to financially strengthen the bank even further. Kindly, therefore, pay no heed to these unfounded reports," Yes Bank said in a statement.
The bank plans to convene an extraordinary general meeting on February 7 to get shareholders' nod for raising Rs 10,000 crore, and to increase authorised capital from existing Rs 800 crore to Rs 1,100 crore, already cleared by the board.
Last week, Uttam Prakash Agarwal, an independent director of Yes Bank resigned from the board and stepped down as head of its audit committee citing major corporate governance concerns.
The capital-starved bank also reported setbacks in its USD 2-billion fundraising plans.
Canadian investor Erwin Singh Braich's USD 1.2 billion offer will not be pursued further, the bank had said. 
 It had further said a USD 500-million offer from Citax Holdings and Citax Investment Group, which was being favourably considered, is also facing headwinds.
 The bank, which was waiting for regulatory approvals as Citax's offer entailed over 10 per cent ownership, has not been able to get a clearance yet on the "conditions precedent". Without specifying timelines, it said the Citax offer will be taken up "during the next round".
 The troubled bank has been forced to shrink its book due to capital paucity and was hoping to close the fundraising by December.
Need for capital has been necessitated as under new CEO Ravneet Gill, the lender has had to provide for sour loan bets taken under his predecessor Rana Kapoor whose term was cut short by the RBI in 2018 over concerns on corporate governance. The central bank has also appointed former deputy governor R Gandhi to the board. DP

Making efforts to financially strengthen bank further: Yes Bank

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Minister of State for Finance Anurag Singh Thakur on Saturday said this is a budget for 'New India', which will benefit every strata of the society.
 "This is one of the best pro-people budgets presented so far. Every strata of the society has been taken well into consideration and major reforms have been undertaken benefiting youth, women, farmers, investors and middle class," he said.
 Calling it the new-decade budget for New India, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government believes in 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas'.
 "To ensure the same, I along with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have been meeting a host of stakeholders across sectors and genres, seeking for their suggestions and inputs. The same were taken well into consideration and the efforts were made to ensure that this Budget is good for all, good for the people and the country," he said.
 The Budget is aimed at boosting income and purchasing power of people. Keeping the same in mind, middle class has been given top-most priority, he said adding that the new tax regime has been proposed to provide significant relief to individual taxpayers by providing income tax rates.
 This will not only give a boost to the middle class but also contribute towards laying the foundation for India to become an economic powerhouse, he added.
 "We are committed to doubling farmers' income by 2022 and major initiatives have been proposed for the same. With the advent of 'Kisan Rail' and 'Krishi Udaan' to be launched by Indian Railways and Ministry of Civil Aviation, respectively, for a seamless national cold supply chain for perishables, this will also serve beneficial as it will aid farmers in facilitating smooth and fast transport of perishable goods," he said.
 Giving a boost to the aspirations of the youth, he said the government has announced an allocation of Rs 99,300 crore for the education sector and Rs 3,000 crore for skill development to ensure that talent meets opportunity. DP HRS

Here are the five books that will help you decode the India China relations — beyond just the border dispute

New Delhi, Nov 20 () Opposition-ruled states on Wednesday expressed concern over delay in release of GST compensation which has put them in an acute financial position.
 In a joint statement here, the finance ministers of Delhi, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan and Kerala said they are facing two months' delay in payment of GST compensation by the Centre.
 Speaking to reporters, West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra said, "We thought we will make appeal to Union Finance Minister (Nirmala Sitharaman) saying that she must personally look into this and not violate the constitutional provisions as passed by parliament of India."
 All the states are in distress if this compensation which is due to them is not given, he said.
 "It is a dangerous situation, there is no precedence before," he said, adding this is the first time in history that there has been a delay.
 "States have not received GST compensation for August and September which is against constitutional amendment where it was stated clearly that states when they fall below below 14 per cent rate of growth of their GST (revenue), they will get compensation by the Centre. So far we have been receiving compensation," he said.
 As far as West Bengal is concerned, the pending amount stands at Rs 1,500 crore, he said.
 Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac said the state was supposed to get Rs 1,600 crore.
 "Kerala (is) under overdraft for almost one week now. This is Centre engineered crisis in the state finance. It has never happened in the history of India. Something drastic has to be done," Issac said.
 Punjab is also under threat of overdraft if the dues are not released immediately, state Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal said.
 Punjab is awaiting Rs 2,100 crore as compensation while arrears stand at Rs 2,000 crore, Badal said.
 Echoing similar concerns, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said due to delay in payment, finances of states are under pressure. The GST compensation due to Delhi is Rs 2,355 crore.
 In their joint statement, the ministers said no explanation whatsoever has been furnished for this delay and as a result, states are facing acute pressure on fiscals and some are already resorting to overdrafts.
 "GST comprises nearly 60 per cent of the tax revenues of States. Many states are already facing deficits up to 50 per cent of the total GST. Such huge deficits have the potential to disrupt the budget and planning processes in a host of areas literally bringing activities of the States to a grinding halt," it said.
 It was recalled that the assurance of GST compensation was a necessary enabler in states agreeing to subsume their fiscal sovereignty into GST. This was preceded by long deliberations within the Empowered Committee where many states had apprehensions about being able to obtain uninterrupted compensation, it added.
 "It was only after the required provisions for compensation were incorporated in the Constitution that States agreed to join the GST. The current delay has shaken the confidence of the States who have so far supported GST in a spirit of rare bonhomie. Despite many challenges from time-to-time States have extended their support to all major decisions of the GST Council," the statement said.
 They also suggested that the matter should be placed on the agenda of the next meeting of the GST Council and a healthy mechanism be evolved to provide compensation in future with due urgency and judiciousness. DP ABM

New Delhi, Nov 20 () Five opposition-ruled states on Wednesday hit out at the Centre over delays in releasing GST compensation saying their finances are in dire strait due to delays.
 AAP-ruled Delhi, TMC-run West Bengal, Congress-ruled Punjab and Rajasthan and Left-run Kerala in a joint statement said compensation since August is pending, making running administration difficult in the states.
 When the Goods and Service Tax (GST) subsumed 17 different central and state levies from July 1, 2017, states were promised that they will be compensated for any loss of tax revenues for five years due to the introduction of the new levy. The compensation was to be paid on a monthly basis but the same has not bee released so far for the months of August and September and that of October would be due soon.
 In all, some Rs 10,000 crore is due to the five states, the finance ministers of the opposition ruled states said.
 BJP-ruled states too would not have got compensation but they haven't yet spoken about it.
 The central government has so far commented on the issue nor has it given out reason for the delay.

 "GST comprises nearly 60 per cent of the tax revenues of states. Many states are already facing deficits up to 50 per cent of the total GST. Such huge deficits have the potential to disrupt the budget and planning processes in a host of areas literally bringing activities of the States to a grinding halt," it said.
 It was recalled that the assurance of GST compensation was a necessary enabler in states agreeing to subsume their fiscal sovereignty into GST. This was preceded by long deliberations within the Empowered Committee where many states had apprehensions about being able to obtain uninterrupted compensation, it added.
 "It was only after the required provisions for compensation were incorporated in the Constitution that States agreed to join the GST. The current delay has shaken the confidence of the States who have so far supported GST in a spirit of rare bonhomie. Despite many challenges from time-to-time States have extended their support to all major decisions of the GST Council," the statement said.
 They also suggested that the matter should be placed on the agenda of the next meeting of the GST Council and a healthy mechanism be evolved to provide compensation in future with due urgency and judiciousness. DP ANZ

Five state finance ministers lash out at Centre over delay in GST compensation

It’s not an unknown fact that centralisation of the best companies in a few cities of India has forced several young working professionals to move out of their hometowns and work tirelessly in stranger cities, which later become their homes. 
 However, the constant guilt of leaving their parents back home, and worrying about their health takes a toll on their own health as well as productivity, which is why a few reputed companies of India, like <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword>, <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> and <keyword id="91294" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="American-Express">American Express</keyword>, have recently started giving their employees benefits for aged parents and parents-in-law. 
 
Last month, a special programme called the “Senior Care programme” was launched by IBM India. It helps employees balance work responsibilities with caring for ageing parents and parents-in-law who require their support. Through the programmer, the company offers its employees subsidised rates for non-critical but essential care services, and employees can request for these services online. 
 
Under the programme, the company will be providing escorted pick-up and drop service to elders from hospital/medical centre visits, home health aides or attendant services for 4-12 hour periods as back-up care, home visits by nurses for shots, as well as sample collection for medical tests from residence and delivery of the hard copy of the report. 
 
"There was a growing trend of IBMers having elder care responsibilities along with childcare. We have tie-ups with quality childcare centres across major locations but realised there was nothing towards the needs of the elderly," DP Singh, head-HR, IBM India/South Asia, told ET. 
In a short time, the service has picked up, as the authorities have received multiple enquiries and has had a few employees availing the benefits in the first week of the launch itself. 
 
Talking of Deloitte, it was in November last year when the company unveiled its Well Being Programme (WBP). As per the programme, parents and parents-in-law of the employees are provided an avenue to reach out and seek support on financial issues and anxiety-related issues. 
 
"Many among the senior population struggle with a sense of relevance and isolation, besides requiring assistance with medical issues. Some may be diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and have no idea how to deal with it," SV Nathan, senior director and chief talent officer at Deloitte in India, told ET. 
 
"The helpline is akin to a counselling service, but it's also more than that it's an outlet for our employees' parents and parents-in-law to talk about issues they're grappling with and thereby be able to reach out and ask for help," he added. 
 
American Express India, on the other hand, offers a 'Dil-Se' parental care programme for its employees, providing a 24/7 health helpline via an exclusive toll-free number for employees and their parents. This would assist them in the solving emergency and primary medical queries, booking doctors' appointments pan India, and getting health advice from qualified medical practitioners. 
 
"The programme also offers customised preventive and curative healthcare packages, consultation by senior doctors and diagnostics at discounted rates to ensure that wellness remains affordable and easily accessible to employees' parents," Vishpala Reddy, HR head, told ET.
