Maruti Suzuki to Hyundai – car makers offer huge year-end discounts to push sales

When South Korean car brand <keyword id="6372046" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kia">Kia</keyword> launched its first SUV, <a href="https://www.carandbike.com/kia-cars/seltos" data-type="tilCustomLink">Kia Seltos</a>, in India in August 2019, it had a lot of odds stacked up against it. The sector itself was going through the worst ever sales slump across two and four wheelers. Added to that, India is predominantly a small car market, leaving a large section of buyers away from it. Yet, it looks like Kia, which set up a factory in Andhra Pradesh, seemed to have packed in what Indians want - good quality at value. By March 2020, it became the largest selling SUV, surprising even the trade pundits. Soon, it had a problem that many automakers would love to have, way too much demand which is affecting their delivery time, making them switch to two shifts. “KIA’s successful entry in India has further enabled the group to gain market share. KIA is a great example of successful badge engineering, something other original equipment manufacturers like Renault-Nissan have been unable to accomplish,” said Sumit Bali, president and head of retail lending and payment, at Axis Bank said during an Axis Capital conference. Cool and futuristic features Its attractive price point at around Rs 9.8 lakhs, Indian love for compact SUVs, and its futuristic technology, and the tiger-nose grille design was too good to pass up. The car was already BS6 compliant which would mean that buyers would not have to worry about changing regulations for a long time. Their range offers the best engine options as well. Upcoming electric cars in India in 2023 – Mahindra, MG, Hyundai cars in the list

Mahindra South Africa has achieved growth in the South African passenger vehicle and pickup market despite an overall drop in sales because of the current economic downturn in the country. Figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) show that Mahindra South Africa is one of the country's fastest growing passenger vehicle and pickup brands. Data from NAAMSA, which recently consolidated the sales for the first three quarters of 2019, show that Mahindra is on track to reach a new overall sales record that will easily exceed its target of 5,664 units for full year. NAAMSA reported that the overall market for the year to end-September was down 3.5 per cent with the largest volume decline being in the passenger vehicle market, which has declined by 4.9 per cent or 13,468 vehicles when compared to the same period last year. Despite this, Mahindra has grown by 33.4 per cent to reach 5,584 sales upto end of September. Its parts division grew in line with new vehicle sales and are up by 36 per cent over the same period. Thanking the growing number of Mahindra customers for their support, Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, highlighted what he believed was responsible for the surge in sales. "We believe that our mix of desirable SUVs and pick-ups, which offers fantastic value for money, our growing network of dealers and our history of solid customer service for the last decade-and-a-half have given us the platform from which we can grow in this tough market, Gupta said. The 2019 sales success follows an aggressive marketing and expansion phase, which started in May 2018 with the official opening of the assembly facility for the Mahindra Pik Up range in Durban. This facility assembles the entire Pik Up range for South Africa and neighbouring countries. One of the biggest benefits of having our own assembly plant in South Africa is the fact that we can introduce special edition models and adapt certain Pik Up models to better suit our customer's needs, Gupta said. This car is mostly used as a cab. “M&amp;M is also proactive on the electrification front and already has an electric 3W and e-rickshaw as well as PV (e-Verito) running on Indian roads. With a pipeline of interesting launches in the electric PV as well as LCV front, the company is steadily transforming amid change in technology landscape in the auto space,” stated a report by ICICI Direct. It sold a little over 8,000 electric three-wheelers in FY22, according to FADA – also this too is comfortably lower than Tata Motors’ EV sales. Green funds, and their large appetites, could also be one of the reasons behind the large investment into M&amp;M. “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. The investment into Mahindra’s EV business is in line with our decarbonization strategy and focus of supporting sustainable business models that create new jobs, particularly for women,” said Samir Abhyankar, managing director of BII. Tata Motors sells 100x more EVs than M&M – but both are valued at around $9 billion

India’s electric charging infrastructure is far away from reaching the critical mass. Yet, that is not stopping auto makers from announcing and launching electric cars. The Indian government has set a <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/auto/car-news/government-finally-wakes-up-sets-a-realistic-goal-of-30-electric-vehicles-by-2030-from-existing-100-target/1091075/">target</a> to turn 30% of total new vehicle sales electric by 2030. At the Auto Expo 2020 in Greater Noida, auto makers revealed their plans for upcoming electric vehicles and showcased concept vehicles for the future. Mahindra, MG, Tata and Volkswagen are among the companies that revealed their plans for upcoming electric vehicles in India. Top upcoming electric cars in India Mahindra eKUV100 The Mahindra eKUV100 was launched at the Auto Expo 2020 with a price tag of ₹8.25 lakh, making it the most affordable EV in the country. It looks identical to its petrol variant and was first showcased during the Auto Expo 2018. The eKUV100 is powered by a 40 kW electric motor that can develop 53 bhp and 120Nm of peak torque. It is powered by a 15.9 kWh lithium-ion battery that is claimed to provide a range of 150 km on a single charge. <keyword id="8725394" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahindra-exuv300">Mahindra eXUV300</keyword> - a long range vehicle The Mahindra eXUV300 is next in line in the electric vehicle segment from the company and is a tad more premium than the eKUV100. It is built on the existing XUV300 platform and is expected to be available in 2021. The car was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 in two variants – standard and extended range. It is powered by a 40 kWh battery capable of delivering a 300 km range on a single charge. The battery has been developed by Mahindra Electric in association with LG Chem. It is currently sold as the Roewe Marvel X by the company’s parent SAIC group. It is powered by a 52.5 kWh battery that can be charged in 8.5 hours and a single charge will provide a range of 400 km. The three motors on the car can develop a combined output of 302hp and 665Nm of peak torque. It has a top speed of 170 kmph and can do 0-100 kmph in 3.1 seconds. If the name seems familiar, it’s because the company had first showcased the vehicle in the popular business reality show Shark Tank and even signed a deal with Ashneer Grover, the co-founder and former managing director of BharatPe. The name OTUA is a wordplay on the traditional Auto that we see every day. The OTUA is powered by a 12.8kW motor and has a carrying volume of 183CC and a capacity of 900 kg. The company has claimed that it is the highest load carrying capacity in the industry. The OTUA is an air-conditioned vehicle and comes with a spacious cabin for the driver. Dandera has said that the vehicle has been designed for logistics companies and for last-mile deliveries. However, it has not revealed if its plans to partner with any of the existing companies. Dandera launches OTUA, a 3-wheeler cargo EV with up to 300 km range

Greater Noida, Feb 5 () Homegrown auto major Mahindra &amp; Mahindra on Wednesday introduced electric variant of its compact SUV KUV100 at starting price of Rs 8.25 lakh (ex showroon Delhi post FAME benefits) at Auto Expo here. The company claims that electric KUV 100 (eKUV 100) is India's most affordable passenger electric vehicle in the segmen. eKUV100 offers peak power output of 40kW, torque of 120 Nm and a range of 147 km, ideal for city commuters. It comes with automatic transmission and could be fast charged to 80 per cent within 60 minutes. Besides, the company showcased e-XUV300, which is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2021 to strengthen its position in the EV segment. The company, part of USD 20.7 billion Mahindra group has also showcased Aton, a new age urban mobility solution and Funster, a roadster electric concept with convertible rooftop. "It is our firm belief that shared mobility would drive large scale adoption of electric vehicles and hence our product offerings would continue to redefine shared mobility space. We intend to offer widest range of vehicles to meet the needs of shared mobility, " said Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Managing Director Pawan Goenka here. He further said " affordability" is the guiding principle of the company in EV category. Speaking on e-KUV 100, he said it was an ideal vehicle for shared mobility and personal mobility. Sharing the details of e-KUV 100, Mahindra's Head of Electric Vehicle Development Ashish Malik said it would give the thrill of driving an SUV and eco-friendly feeling at the same time. " It comes with a city friendly motor of 15.9 KV, which is perfect for city commute. It delivers power of 40 kw and torque of 120 Nm. The range is almost 150 km," he said. It can be fast charged to 80 per cent in 55 minutes. "It comes with a liquid cool battery pack and also offers the convenience and comfort of auto transmission and many connected car features as pre cool and switch it off and on remotely or even digital connected features which would be revealed at the launch," said Malik. While talking about eXUV300, Goenka said, "it would be launched in the second half of 2021." The eXUV300 is powered by a powerful motor and a large battery capacity ensures a long range. It has a new futuristic design with new features, smart and premium interiors with blue highlights to accentuate the new character of this SUV. It has been built on a platform that has 5-star safety rating from GNCAP. According to Goenka, the company has invested around Rs 1,700 crore on development of electric vehicles which includes technology, infrastructure and products. "Right now we are investing another Rs 500 crore to set up a new R&amp;D centre at Bengaluru and a new capacity which we are setting at Pune," he said. Goenka further said shared mobility would be the driver of growth as it would be commercially viable. "I do believe that in EV in India the primary segment for drive the growth would be shared mobility. The reason is that the EV would be commercially viable. They have to be driven 150 to 200 km in a day which cannot happen in personal use mobility," he said adding " that is the reason Mahindra is focussing on shared mobility before we get into vehicle like eKUV 100 or eXUV 300." The company also has plans to launch Treo.4 of its first lithium battery based three-wheeler auto. "This will have everything locally manufactured except lithium cell," he said adding "it would be coming out very soon". On the future of electric three-wheelers, he said: I wouldn't be surprised if in 3 to 5 years 50 per cent three-wheelers sold in India are electric three-wheelers." While talking about Funster, Goenka said it was designed at the company's own design studio at Mumbai. Funster offers an output of 230 kW with a top speed of 200 kmph, clocking 0 to 100 kmph in 5 seconds. Mahindra launches eKUV100 priced at Rs 8.25 lakh

Over the next two to three years, Indian automaker <keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword> (<keyword id="46869" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="MM">M&amp;M</keyword>) will be investing around Rs 1,000 crore to develop petrol engines. The new petrol engines (1.5 litre and 1.6 litre) will be developed in-house and a 2.2-litre petrol engine will be developed in collaboration with Korean subsidiary SsangYong Motor Company (SMC). 
 Other than this, they are reviewing opportunities to share platforms with SMC, said M&amp;M Executive Director Pawan Goenka. M&amp;M’s latest addition to its fleet, the <keyword id="3176468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="KUV100">KUV100</keyword> comes with a 1.2-litre mFalcon G80, which is the first petrol engine developed jointly with SMC. 
The 2.2-litre petrol engine is being made for Scorpio and XUV500 cars. 
 
Goenka told ET that there are four engines that will be available in petrol - that of 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre and 2.2 litre - and in some time M&amp;M will strap them across all the cars. 
 
While SMC would majorly focus on operational issues, M&amp;M would be putting its focus on the financial turnaround of the company. 
 
"SMC brokeeven in the last quarter of calendar 2015. Certainly, the focus until now was more on turning around the company in terms of products volumes, union labour issues, brandbuilding. We have managed to do all of that reasonably well. Now we will focus on financial turnaround," Goenka said. 
 
The reason why M&amp;M is focusing on developing petrol engines is the December 2015 ruling of Supreme Court, which suspended registration of diesel engine vehicles bigger than 2.0 litres in the National Capital Region till March 2016.

The car's wheel arches, front grill and sport design suggest Honda’s watching the sub-four meter segment closely. 
 
It is slated for an early 2016 launch.
