Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

India Inc. stares at an earnings dearth in Q2, FMCG, auto, and consumer durables falter

New Delhi: As the earnings season for the second quarter of FY25 unfolds, <keyword id="19959986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-sector-banks" source="keywords">public sector banks</keyword> (PSBs) are expected to see a slight dip in profits compared to the previous quarter, according to a report by <keyword id="19896146" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Motilal-Oswal" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Motilal Oswal" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Motilal Oswal">Motilal Oswal</keyword>. The report estimates that PSBs' Profit After Tax (PAT) will decline by 0.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), while showing a stronger year-on-year (YoY) growth of 17.2 per cent. "We estimate PSBs to report moderate <keyword id="19899597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="earnings-growth" source="keywords">earnings growth</keyword> of 17.2 pc YoY/ a decline of 0.6 pc QoQ in 2QFY25," the report stated. The slower pace of growth can be attributed to flat net interest margins (NIMs) and a slight increase in loan loss provisions (LLP). The <keyword id="20171160" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-Interest-Income" source="keywords">Net Interest Income</keyword> (NII) for PSBs is expected to grow by around 6 per cent YoY, although interest margins are likely to remain under pressure. Despite these near-term challenges, the report suggests that public sector banks are on track to post a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent between FY24 and FY26, pointing to sustained long-term growth. In the private sector banking space, the report forecasts mixed results for the same quarter. For private banks under the coverage, Pre-Provision Operating Profit (PPoP) is expected to grow by 12 per cent YoY and 1 per cent QoQ. However, PAT growth is predicted to be more modest, increasing by 5 per cent YoY and 0.6 per cent QoQ. "For our private bank coverage universe, we estimate a PPoP growth of 12 pc YoY/1 pc QoQ and a PAT growth of 5 pc YoY/0.6 pc QoQ in 2QFY25," the report added. Looking ahead, private sector banks are expected to experience steady profitability growth, with earnings projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.4 per cent over FY24-FY26. Overall, while both public and private sector banks may face moderate growth in the second quarter due to margin pressures and higher provisions, their long-term earnings prospects remain positive. New Delhi, <keyword id="45473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Holidays" source="Orion">Mahindra Holidays</keyword> &amp; Resorts India Ltd on Monday reported a consolidated profit after tax of Rs 21.43 crore for the second quarter ended September 2023. The company had reported a consolidated Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs 41.4 crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year, according to a regulatory filing. Its revenue from operations during the July-September quarter stood at Rs 655.27 crore, as against Rs 598.36 crore in the year-ago period, it said. The company's total expenditure also rose to Rs 636.32 crore, from Rs 574.65 crore a year ago.

Mahindra Holidays & Resorts' consolidated PAT almost halves in Q2 2023-24

The stock tanked 6.59% to ₹2,483.95 on the NSE. The stock emerged as the biggest laggard among the Sensex and Nifty firms during the morning trade. Hindustan Unilever Ltd on Wednesday reported a 2.33% decline in consolidated net profit at ₹2,595 crore for the second quarter ended in September 2024, impacted by moderation in demand from the urban market. The company had logged a net profit of ₹2,657 crore in the July-September quarter a year ago, HUL said in a regulatory filing. However, revenue from product sales was up 2.36% at ₹15,703 crore in the September quarter, from ₹15,340 crore in the year-ago period, HUL which owns power brands such as Surf, Rin, Lux, Pond's, Lifebuoy, Lakme, Brooke Bond, Lipton and Horlicks said. "In the September quarter, <keyword id="21419477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG-demand" source="keywords">FMCG demand</keyword> witnessed moderating growth in urban markets, while rural continued to recover gradually. In this context, we delivered a competitive and profitable performance," HUL CEO and Managing Director Rohit Jawa said. HUL reported an underlying sales growth of 2% and underlying volume growth of 3%. Total expenses were at ₹12,581 crore in the September quarter, up 3.03% year-on-year. HUL's total income, which includes other income, was up 2.14% to ₹16,145 crore in the September quarter of FY25. Addressing an earnings call, HUL CFO Ritesh Tiwari said, "Two thirds of our business we do in urban areas, and one-third we do in rural areas … we are seeing growth in the urban market moderating. We are seeing rural growth recovery is gradual … it impacts all the categories that we have." On the outlook, he said, "In the near term, we expect demand trends to be stable with no further acceleration in pace of growth." In this context, Tiwari said, "Our focus remains on driving competitive volume-led growth, while continuing investments behind our brands and strategy priorities … If commodity prices remain where they are, we expect a low single digit price growth in the near-term." Hindustan Unilever shares tumble over 6% post Q2 results

Total income increased to Rs 85,500 crore during the quarter under review against Rs 78,406 crore in the same period last year, HDFC Bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank reported <keyword id="20202322" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-income" source="keywords">interest income</keyword> of Rs 74,017 crore during the quarter compared to Rs 67,698 crore in the same period a year ago. Net Interest Income (NII) improved to Rs 30,110 crore, from Rs 27,390 crore in the second quarter of previous year, registering a 10 per cent growth. As regards asset quality, the bank witnessed slight deterioration with gross <keyword id="19927319" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Non-Performing-Assets" source="keywords">Non-Performing Assets</keyword> (NPAs) rising to 1.36 per cent of the gross loans by the end of September 2024 from 1.34 per cent a year ago. Similarly, net NPAs or bad loans rose to 0.41 per cent from 0.35 per cent at the end of the second quarter of the previous fiscal. On a consolidated basis, the bank logged a growth of 6 per cent in net profit to Rs 17,826 crore as against Rs Rs 16,811 crore in Q2FY24. HDFC Bank Q2 profit soars 5% to ₹16,821 crore

While the automakers managed to report a small increase in sales after three months of decline, rising inventory levels at dealerships continue to remain a concern. The domestic PV sales increased to 401,447 units in October 2024, recording a modest 1.8% growth year-on-year. <h2>Automakers report a decline</h2>Maruti Suzuki, the country’s biggest automaker took a hit in October 2024, with 1,59,591 cars sold, down from 1,68,047 cars sold in October 2023, recording a 5% year-on-year decline in sales. However, the company reported strong exports, allowing it to record its highest-ever overall monthly sales at 2,06,434 vehicles, registering a 4% year-on-year growth. The recently listed <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> comes in second, with 55,568 cars sold domestically in October 2024, up from 55,128 cars sold in October 2023, recording a 0.8% growth. Similar to Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai also recorded an increase in exports. Mahindra continues to occupy the third position, with 54,504 cars sold during October 2024, up from 43,708 cars sold in October 2023, recording a 24.7% growth. October auto sales – Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors report a decline, Mahindra continues to grow

New Delhi, <keyword id="20108985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-zinc" source="keywords">Hindustan Zinc</keyword> Ltd (<keyword id="20256739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hzl" source="keywords">HZL</keyword>) on Friday posted a 6 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 2,028 crore during the quarter ended December 2023, dragged by lower income. It had clocked Rs 2,156 crore net profit during the October-December period of the preceding 2022-23 fiscal, the company said in an exchange filing. On a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) basis, the company's profit grew 17 per cent as against Rs 1,729 crore in the July-September quarter. During the quarter under review, the company's total income reduced to Rs 7,606 crore from Rs 8,214 crore a year ago. Its expenses were Rs 4,937 crore as against Rs 5,028 crore in the year-ago period. On the company's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, Arun Misra, Chief Executive Officer of HZL, said: "Hindustan Zinc has initiated the deployment of electric and LNG vehicles in its operations for inter-unit movements and finished goods transportation, thereby reducing the scope 3 emissions." Its CFO Sandeep Modi said, the performance "marks the company's fourth consecutive quarter of consistent cost improvement and the lowest cost in the last 10 quarters. We continue to remain focused on cost optimisation, operational efficiencies, working capital management, digital improvements and shareholder value maximisation." HZL's production of mined metal in the quarter rose 8 per cent to 271 kilo tonne (kt) sequentially and 7 per cent up year-on-year (y-o-y), driven by higher ore production at Rampura Agucha and <keyword id="20256741" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sindesar-khurd" source="keywords">Sindesar Khurd</keyword> mines. In the quarter under review, its refined metal production grew 7 per cent to 259 kt sequentially and 1 per cent higher y-o-y. Integrated zinc production in the quarter increased 10 per cent to 203 kt sequentially and declined 4 per cent y-o-y. In the December quarter, production of refined lead fell 1 per cent to 56 kt sequentially but grew 21 per cent y-o-y. Its saleable silver production in the quarter was 197 MT (metric tonne), up 9 per cent q-o-q and 22 per cent y-o-y. <keyword id="20006961" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sharing" source="keywords">Sharing</keyword> an update on the projects, HZL said its fumer and alloy plants are currently under operation after their commissioning in the last quarter, while a new roaster at Debari of 160 ktpa and Hindustan Zinc Fertilisers Private Ltd (HZFPL) of 510 ktpa for main process package is on track. The company generated a cash flow of Rs 2,097 crore during the quarter. Total borrowings outstanding as of December 2023 was Rs 10,111 crore. During the quarter, the company paid a dividend of Rs 2,535 crore. Hindustan Zinc is the world's second largest integrated zinc producer and fifth largest silver producer. The Udaipur-based company holds about 80 per cent of the growing zinc market in the country.

He argues that the iPhone is on the verge of a supercycle as consumers upgrade their phones to get access to Apple Intelligence features."We expect a strong iPhone performance for the September quarter and expect a relatively bullish December iPhone demand commentary from Cook &amp; Co. despite many of the bears recently yelling fire in a crowded theater on the strength of iPhone 16 sales," Ives said in a note on Sunday.Ives says that bearish views on Apple fail to appreciate its installed base of 1.5 billion iPhones that will eventually need to be replaced, as well as the growing Services business that helps monetize the massive user base, and the potential for Apple to be the gatekeeper of AI technologies to a large group of people.Wedbush rates Apple at "Outperform" with a $300 price target.<h3 id="e4503694-e0ad-46c2-9f27-9244aa504759">Goldman Sachs: 'We see upside to consensus'</h3>Goldman Sachs said it sees "upside to consensus revenue and EPS driven by outperformance in iPhone and Services" in a note last week.Goldman analyst Michael Ng expects the company to report $1.61 in earnings per share and $94.5 billion in revenue, which would represent year-over-year growth of 6%.Like other analysts, Ng is focused on the impact of AI and all of the software features Apple is set to release in the next few months."Although Apple Intelligence has yet to be a demand driver, we're encouraged by the rollout of Apple Intelligence features with iOS 18.1 (Week of October 28, includes Writing Tools, notification summaries, Clean Up in Photos), iOS 18.2 (currently in beta for est. December release, includes Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT), and iOS 18.4 (est. Meanwhile, Apple's core AI features aren't expected to be released for the iPhone until early next year.Here's what Wall Street is looking for in Apple's upcoming earnings report.<h3 id="ed1099ce-654e-4938-929c-540867493d06">Bank of America: 'Look past the iPhone 16 noise'</h3>With some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/apple-stock-price-tumbles-analyst-says-iphone-16-orders-slashed-2024-10">conflicting views on Wall Street</a> about iPhone 16 demand in recent weeks, Bank of America said investors should "look past the iPhone 16 noise to impact of Apple Intelligence.""Contrary to every cycle where all the hardware/software functionality is more or less static through the course of the cycle, we view the cycle as more dynamic with more material software updates that increases the value to the user," <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bac-stock">Bank of America</a> analyst Wasmi Mohan said in a note last week.Mohan said iPhone demand to pick up over the next few months as Apple's AI features become more robust and expects the company to sell 80 million iPhone units during the holiday season.Mohan is encouraged by a slightly higher average selling price for iPhones as consumers overwhelmingly continue to gravitate towards the more expensive Pro models.Bank of America rates Apple at "Buy" with a $256 price target.<h3 id="401e4f18-6633-40cf-afc8-ee3bb450bbd5">JPMorgan: Expect a beat on results but a miss on guidance</h3>JPMorgan expects Apple to report a strong fourth-quarter earnings report that will likely beat revenue and profit estimates but that it will also disappoint with weaker-than-expected guidance for the holiday quarter."Sell-through for iPhone 16 series started off slower than iPhone 15, and while momentum has improved in recent weeks, the magnitude of the improvement is still putting volumes modestly below last year," <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jpm-stock">JPMorgan</a> analyst Samik Chatterjee said in a Monday note.Like many analysts on Wall Street, Chatterjee is looking for evidence that AI features will drive a bump in iPhone sales.JPMorgan rates Apple at "Overweight" with a $265 price target.<h3 id="8cc56af8-9576-4342-a49a-9c505626a6a6">Wedbush: Apple will be a $4 trillion company next year</h3>Wedbush analyst Dan Ives isn't budging from him bullish view on Apple heading into the company's financial results. He argues that the iPhone is on the verge of a supercycle as consumers upgrade their phones to get access to Apple Intelligence features."We expect a strong iPhone performance for the September quarter and expect a relatively bullish December iPhone demand commentary from Cook &amp; Co. despite many of the bears recently yelling fire in a crowded theater on the strength of iPhone 16 sales," Ives said in a note on Sunday.Ives says that bearish views on Apple fail to appreciate its installed base of 1.5 billion iPhones that will eventually need to be replaced, as well as the growing Services business that helps monetize the massive user base, and the potential for Apple to be the gatekeeper of AI technologies to a large group of people.Wedbush rates Apple at "Outperform" with a $300 price target.<h3 id="e4503694-e0ad-46c2-9f27-9244aa504759">Goldman Sachs: 'We see upside to consensus'</h3>Goldman Sachs said it sees "upside to consensus revenue and EPS driven by outperformance in iPhone and Services" in a note last week.Goldman analyst Michael Ng expects the company to report $1.61 in earnings per share and $94.5 billion in revenue, which would represent year-over-year growth of 6%.Like other analysts, Ng is focused on the impact of AI and all of the software features Apple is set to release in the next few months."Although Apple Intelligence has yet to be a demand driver, we're encouraged by the rollout of Apple Intelligence features with iOS 18.1 (Week of October 28, includes Writing Tools, notification summaries, Clean Up in Photos), iOS 18.2 (currently in beta for est. December release, includes Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT), and iOS 18.4 (est.
