<ul><li>Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a premium shared mobility service called Glyd. </li><li>The service – Glyd – will have only Mahindra’s Electric Vehicles in its fleet. </li><li>While it has been launched in Mumbai, it will soon move to other cities.</li></ul>Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a cab-hailing service called <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/technology/auto/mahindra-glyd-es-into-mumbais-app-based-taxi-business-to-rival-uber-ola-3580161.html">Glyd </a>for the office-going crowd. The service is powered by electric vehicles and will come as a new rival for companies like Uber and Ola in India. While the ownership is Mahindra’s, the fleet of 10 e-Veritos for now and drivers will be managed by a third party. The service has been launched in Mumbai and will expand to other Indian cities soon. The tech-based e-mobility service is designed for the office going crowd with features like web-conferencing along with curated entertainment and music content provided from partners. It also boasts of additional features like privacy screen, air purifier, wrap-around headrest among others. The services will be marketed as a “premium” service. "The company has from time to time provided innovative and first of its kind e-mobility solutions. Glyd is one such flagship premium e-mobility solution to redefine the in-commute experience of daily commuters," M&amp;M Managing Director Pawan Goenka said in a<a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/auto/mahindra-launches-electric-mobility-service-glyd-in-mumbai-10-e-veritos-flagged-off/story/322009.html"> statement.</a> India has seen a boom of mobility startups and services, led by the successful example of Ola. Uber and Ola have a new challenger in India – and it’s a large car maker

The news come just two days after Mahindra and Mahindra announced the launch of its ride hailing service Glyd which would be using only Electric Vehicles (EVs). The subsidiary company had come into being when Ola tried to push its electric mobility program in Nagpur in partnership with Mahindra. While the plan didn’t take off in Nagpur roads with drivers even reportedly returning the vehicles, Ola has stuck to its plan to bring 1 million Electric Vehicles on Indian roads by 2022. This venture seems to be a part of Ola’s bigger plans of doing more than just putting cabs on the roads. Through Ola Electric, the company has already partnered with several OEMs and battery manufacturers, while looking at working with the automotive industry for solutions for electric vehicles. According to the company’s official statement, they are currently running several pilots to deploy electric vehicles and charging solutions, including battery swapping stations, electric 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler services amongst others. “At Ola Electric, our mission is to enable sustainable mobility for everyone. India can leapfrog problems of pollution and energy security by moving to electric mobility, create millions of new jobs and economic opportunity, and lead the world,” said Bhavish Aggarwal, Co-founder &amp; CEO, Ola in an official statement. Ola gets fresh funds to take on Mahindra’s Glyd – where’s Uber?

<ul><li>Indian ride-hailing unicorn Ola has expanded its operations in the UK. </li><li>Ola is now present in 7 cities in the UK. </li><li>The company is not launching auto-rickshaws in the UK, had only used them in Liverpool for a promotional campaign last week.</li></ul>Indian cab aggregator Ola has expanded its operations in the United Kingdom and has launched services in three new cities in the UK – Liverpool, Birmingham and Reading. This takes Ola’s presence to a total of seven cities in the UK. Local councils in the UK have granted the platform with Taxi and Private Hire licenses. The company said that Ola is the only app in the UK that offers both black cabs and Private Hire Vehicles while also giving drivers highest share of the revenue – charging just 10% commission to black cabs and 15% to PHVs. “Thanks to the positive word-of-mouth from both driver-partners and passengers who experienced our offerings in Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, and Exeter, we received requests from users across the UK to introduce the Ola platform in their cities,” said Ben Legg, Managing Director of <keyword id="6775956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-UK">Ola UK</keyword>. Photos of Ola’s tuk tuks spotted Liverpool had become a talking point in social media. However, the company said that it has not launched auto rickshaws in the UK. Ola onboards 3 more cities in the UK, uses tuk-tuks only for promotion

The government has reportedly ordered ride-hailing giants Uber and Ola to convert 40% of their fleet to electric cars by 2026, according to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-electric-autos-exclusives/exclusive-india-to-order-taxi-aggregators-like-uber-ola-to-go-electric-idUSKCN1T71DU">Reuters report.</a> The report said that for both the companies to achieve this target, they will have to begin the conversion process by next year itself – “would need to start converting their fleet as early as next year to achieve 2.5% electrification by 2021, 5% by 2022, 10% by 2023 before hiking it to 40%,” the report said. Ola might take to this deadline much easily. It has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment. The homegrown unicorn has a company under the name Ola Electric Mobility which develops solutions to make electric mobility viable on a large scale. Ola plans to bring 1 million Electric Vehicles on to the Indian roads by 2021. The company has also been raising funds at a quick pace. So far, it has brought in investors like Ratan Tata and Arun Sarin, along with Tiger Global and Matrix India – all of whom are early investors in the parent company ANI Technologies. Meanwhile, Uber too is <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/09/uber-begins-trialing-e-bikes-and-bicycles-rides-in-india/">reportedly</a> experimenting with electric bicycles and bikes in India. Uber, Ola might have to go electric by 2026 in India: Report

<ul><li>Ola is piloting its self-driving car rental service in India. </li><li>Sources suggest that Ola will be pumping in $500 million into the segment. </li><li>Earlier in March, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation made their biggest combined investment to date of $300 million into Ola. </li></ul>Indian ride-hailing startup Ola is rapidly moving beyond its core service of being a cab aggregator. After making inroads into e-mobility, it is now launching a self-drive service. Ola is set to start its self-drive service by pumping in $500 million, a source told Business Insider. Confirming the news, an Ola spokesperson told Business Insider, “Basis market feedback, we are piloting our Ola Self-Drive offering in various formats like rentals, subscription and corporate leasing in select cities in the coming weeks. This space is currently underserved and there exists a tremendous opportunity to build a superior experience through an integrated mobility platform like Ola.” The self-drive car rental service will put Ola in direct competition with Zoomcar and Drivezy, while pushing forward Ola’s existing fleet business. Ola Fleet Technologies Pvt Ltd also looks into asset optimization and management. Ola is planning to take this launch to its top seven cities – Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata – with over 10,000 vehicles including luxury sedans and SUVs under the Ola Self-drive category. The company is taking this self-drive category to Ola’s 150 million+ consumers in the country will make it the largest self drive business in India, the source added. By understanding consumer demand, Ola will look at introducing more car types into the self-drive category. They are also looking at growing the business through a subscription model for consumers and reaching out to corporates. Earlier this month, Hyundai Motor Group and Ola announced a strategic partnership under which Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation made their biggest combined investment to date of $300 million. “As part of the strategic collaboration, the companies have agreed to co-create solutions to operate and manage fleet vehicles, marking the Group’s first foray into the industry, as they expand operations from automobile manufacturing and sales to total fleet solutions,” Ola had said in an official statement. Ola will race Zoomcar in self-drive car rentals with a $500 million bet

<ul><li><keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> is expected to launch one of the biggest IPOs in years.</li><li>The San Francisco-based company is expected to be valued at $100 billion. </li><li>India, which is one of Uber’s biggest markets, found several mentions in the filing document.</li></ul>Uber finally filed for its much talked about IPO, just weeks after its global rival Lyft went public. And in Uber’s long IPO filing document, India’s finds at least 24 mentions. Uber has always maintained that India is one of its biggest markets, since its entry in the market in 2013. Six years later, Uber runs 30 million cars in India, as mentioned in its IPO filing, with US being its biggest market. Uber also reported 2018 revenue of $11.27 billion and net income of $997 million. For its India business, competition takes centrestage and Uber has not missed out on talking about it. In the filing, mentioning its offering Uber Eats, the company said that it competes with <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> and <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword>, who have a “substantial market-specific knowledge and established relationships with local restaurants, affording them significant product advantages.” The company also further stated that these “competitors may be able to respond more quickly and effectively than us in such markets to new or changing opportunities, technologies, consumer preferences, regulations, or standards, which may render our products or offerings less attractive”. Interestingly, it was reported that Swiggy was in talks with Uber Eats to acquire their India business. However, the deal came to a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/swiggy-ubereats-cant-tally-numbers-for-a-deal/articleshow/68731884.cms">hold </a>as both companies didn’t agree on financial terms. Uber, which has been subject to many protests and dissatisfaction from its Indian drivers, also mentioned the same in the filing. A lot of the protests have been about Uber’s cancellation of initiatives that it had earlier offered drivers to bring them on board. In its filing, Uber says that in order to improve its financial performance (with its IPO the company also reported losses of $1.8 billion), it will have to reduce driver incentives which will then increase driver dissatisfaction. “Any decline in the number of Drivers, consumers, restaurants, shippers, or carriers using our platform would reduce the value of our network and would harm our future operating results,” the company stated in the filing. However, the company also stated that its business depends substantially on operations outside of the US, India being one of them. India was also the first country where Uber allowed consumers to pay in cash, and then followed it up with other countries. “In 2018, cash-paid trips accounted for nearly 13% of our global Gross Bookings,” the company said. And of course, the document also mentioned surge-pricing, one of the reasons why the company has often faced the wrath of its consumers. In India, after a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court in 2016, the company agreed to “not calculate consumer fares in excess of the maximum government-mandated fares in New Delhi, India”. User safety has reportedly been one of Uber’s biggest promises in India, which has also led the company to develop SOS features. The company mentioned the case where an Uber driver had raped an Indian female user in New Delhi in 2014. While it clarified that the company does carry out necessary background checks for drivers, it informed that such incidents “could have an adverse impact on our reputation, business, financial condition, and operating results.''
