Today, in the tech industry, moonlighting is the biggest open secret. This is predominantly a result of its work from anywhere (WFA) flexibility and salary structures that have not been revised for decades now, and are out of sync with inflation and the cost of living. Social media has bolstered the impact of moonlighting, making it a conversation across platforms. Leaders engaging in this conversation with a strong tone have been questioned and berated by the new generation of the workforce. The generational shift in mindset has been transforming the future of work. There are enough non-traditional traits of Gen-Z in the realm of work, workplace and evolving trends. Every 6-8 years, a new generation of the workforce enters with a different mindset. This accelerated with the pandemic-induced hybrid workforce evolution and is transforming the way of work. The predictability quotient has considerably reduced except for one thing that is certain - evolution. Moving towards a digital ecosystem has been a blessing. But was it the first flash of red light? Seamless linkages across Aadhaar, <keyword id="61610" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pan" source="Orion">PAN</keyword> and PF in some cases brought a few such cases into the public domain. Nonetheless, moonlighting became a swift and easy choice for most employees to supplement their incomes with the rising inflation. With the pandemic, hybrid work policies, WFA mannerisms, quiet quitting, quiet firing, and moonlighting picked up momentum. According to HR experts, the incidence of moonlighting has increased in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, with people wanting to earn more money in the face of job losses, inflation or having more time as a result of working from home. However, <keyword id="115437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-inc-" source="Orion">India Inc.</keyword> did not anticipate moonlighting to attain such a gigantic proportion so quickly. Other reasons could be the entrepreneurial bug that has bitten all tech employees alike, the need for higher incomes and lastly the demand for flexibility in workplaces. As per some unofficial estimates, despite a return-to-office mandate, less than 15% of the employees turn up to work, especially at the junior level. This impacts mid-level managers as they have a lesser incentive to return to office. However, there is no clarity on what level the laid-off employees involved in moonlighting fell under - entry, middle or senior. If it were at the entry level, it may just be possible that the salaries were lower compared to the cost of living in major cities. That made staying at home and working for two jobs a better proposition for them. While for mid- and senior-level employees, it could be that they got more exciting projects, helping them enhance their skill sets and of course supplementing their income. From a broader lens, for organisations, it is an ethical and moral issue concerning intellectual property. It might just affect productivity due to increasing fatigue and stress. From a legal standpoint, if the contract forbids moonlighting, it is a strict NO. A person may work more than one job in India without breaking the law unless prohibited by the employment contract. However, section 60 of the Factories Act bars dual employment for an adult worker. All in all, moonlighting is an ethical issue. It becomes a logical thing to do in India, where overtime pay is an alien concept and plentiful employees are underpaid on full-time jobs. The war of talent is real and is deeply impacting employers. Employees who are part of the skilled working population are spoilt for choice with an ‘abundance mindset’. Moonlighting in today’s world is going to stay. What is needed is not confrontation but collaboration between employer and employee. After all, human capital investments define a company and its culture!

The city emerged on top of the list of 14 cities surveyed, with 95% of employers saying that they are looking to hire. This is much higher than the national intent to hire – which came in at 61% – in the July-September period, as per the TeamLease’s Employment Outlook report. For the report, 865 employers across the country were surveyed. The intent to hire by employers in Bangalore rose from 91% in April-June to 95% in July-September, according to the report. Manufacturing and service industries have both shown positive growth in terms of intent to hire during the same period. In manufacturing, the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry saw the maximum growth in intent to hire at 48%, followed by health and pharmaceuticals (43%) and engineering and infrastructure (38%). More employers are keen to increase their resource pool and are also inclined to pay higher remunerations. In fact in the coming quarters, hiring intent is further expected to be 97%,” Bhatt added. From a job role perspective, information technology-related roles, sales, engineering and marketing were highly in demand in Bangalore in this quarter. Although she had completely different preferences for her career during her teenage but later pursued a career in digital marketing, she told the Indian Express. At the age of 15, she chose acting over joining the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — a prestigious college in India for Engineering. She then made her acting debut in 1995 with the film "Naseem", based on the Babri Masjid demolition, and rose to fame with her performance in Mahesh Bhatt's "Papa Kehte Hai," which also starred Jugal Hansraj. Kango appeared in films like "Betaabi," "Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet" and "Badal" and was also seen in TV shows like "Kaahin Kissii Roz," "Kittie Party", "Kkusum" and "Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat." Kango subsequently moved to the US in 2003 and graduated with an MBA degree in marketing and finance from City University of New York-Baruch College. She told the Times of India that she is often meets industry people who are surprised to see a former Bollywood actor in a corporate career and she had to prove all the people all the people in every meeting that there is no relation between intelligence and acting. How do you shame someone who has no regrets in life? Tough nut to crack, isn’t it? That’s exactly how Sunny Leone comes across as. The most googled woman in India, who even surpasses the fanclub of our most popular Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is not in awe of her stardom or whatever it can be called. 
 
She has been cited as the reason for India’s falling moral standards, for ‘misleading’ the youth of the country with her porn star image. Sunny Leone has only one regret and that has nothing to do with her professional life. 
 In a recent television interview with senior journalist <keyword id="3212789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhupendra-Chaubey">Bhupendra Chaubey</keyword>, Leone said she still has remorse over the fact that she couldn’t reach home any faster when her mother died. “Except for that, I have no other regrets,” she said confidently. 
 
In fact, Chaubey seemed to have come prepared to attack her on morality issues. 
 
Chiding her and complimenting her in turns, he tried his best to tell Leone she was not something the nation would be proud of. But Karenjit Kaur Vohra, aka Sunny Leone, took none of it. 
 
Her take was simple. I do, what I do, I enjoy whatever I am doing; if you feel offended by my being and choices, feel free to do so. “People’s negativity doesn’t affect me,” she said in a voice that exuded conviction and determination. 
 
Majority of social media seemed to be in support of her, and also stood against Chaubey for the tone of his interview, which had dark shades of very righteous and glorifying elements aplenty. 
 
The 34-year-old Canada born lass ain’t being apologetic about politicians commenting about her influence on India’s youth though there have been numerous instances in the past where she has been squarely and unfairly blamed for poor opinion against women in the country. 
 
“Am I going to be disturbed about this? No! Am I so important that politicians need to spend their time commenting about me, my life and my work,” she says on a serious note, before jocularly adding “I will wait for American politicians to mention me in their speeches!” 
 
Leone, ho made a foray into Hindi films few years ago, admitted to the chaos in film industry and it is the only thing that has frazzled her. 
 
“Looks like there is an order to the chaos in film industry. It’s like everyone knows things will work in some series. I am the only one who stresses out about things going wrong,” Leone said, indicating she still has some distance to go before getting used to the way things work in an unorganized sector called the entertainment industry. 
 
Apart from work, there is nothing else that seems to bother her at the outset. However, it is also pretty evident from that twinkle in her eyes that she is here for a good time. When that ends, she won’t waste even a moment before packing her bags for good. 
 
All the popularity whether good or bad, seems to be doing her simply good. Even in the past, Leone had admitted to the fact that her revenue driven website was receiving most of the traffic from India. “More than 60% of my visitors are from India” she had said, and this has only increased her stake as an actor. 
 
She knows her economy better than her public image. This is probably the reason why she even did an interview that was not positioned in her favour. She has very less to lose, especially to journalists, when it comes to reaching the category of men and women she caters to. 
 
A PETA activist, Leone is highly focused and sensitive to many issues and she crafts her opinions with some sort of ‘on-the-feet’ thinking that other stars can only dream about. She isn’t noisy, or isn’t crass in her approach towards what keeps her life ticking at the moment. When she says work is interesting, she means every word that she says. 
 
Whether it is Mahesh Bhatt’s Jism 2 or Ragini MMS, or Ek Paheli Leela or even the most recent Mastizaade, Leone is at home with her selection of scripts based on the image that she has carved for herself so far. 
 
“I like acting. I am an entertainer” she says, noting the big difference between the two words and what they mean in the film industry. Her small tinge of nervousness notwithstanding, Leone’s interview was something that revealed her sensitive and sensible side, without being loud and garish. No feminism, no sloganeering, no justification – just a clean, simple and to the point responses that were more of introspective comments than being reactionary. 
 
Sunny Leone has this warm disposition about her that places her well above the rest in the league. And, she is good at securing her place, wherever she chooses to stay.
