New Delhi: The tomato <keyword id="19900606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Retail-prices" source="keywords">retail prices</keyword> witnessed a fall of over 22 per cent in a month due to better supply, the Department of Consumer Affairs said in a release on Sunday. The all-India average retail prices as on 14th November, 2024 was Rs 52.35 per kg which is 22.4 per cent lower than Rs 67.50 per kg on 14th October, 2024. During the same period, the modal prices at <keyword id="20593658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azadpur-mandi" source="keywords">Azadpur mandi</keyword> declined by almost 50 per cent, from Rs 5,883 per quintal to Rs 2,969 per quintal with the increase in tomato arrivals. Similar decline in mandi prices are reported from benchmark markets such as Pimpalgaon, Madanapalle and Kolar. The total annual production of tomato, as per third advance estimate of Department of Agriculture is 213.20 lakh tonnes in 2023-24; a 4 per cent increase over 204.25 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. Even though tomato is produced throughout the year, there is seasonality in the producing areas and the quantum of production. Adverse weather condition and slight logistics disruptions have significant impact on prices due to high susceptibility of tomato crop and high perishability of the fruit, said the release. The surge in <keyword id="21475520" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tomato-prices" source="keywords">tomato prices</keyword> during October, 2024 was on account of excessive and prolonged rains in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the release added. The general seasonality in tomato production across various regions of India showed that October and November are main sowing period in major producing states. Continuous availability of tomato in the market, however, is ensured because of the short duration for cultivation of the crop and multiple picking of the fruits. Even though the arrivals have subsided at major tomato centres in Madanappale and Kolar, prices have come down on account of seasonal arrivals from pockets in states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat that have been filling the gaps in supply across the nation. As on date, the weather has also been favourable for the crop and also for maintaining a good flow across the supply chain form the fields to the consumers.

Tomato prices falls over 22% in a month due to better supply

The prices of <keyword id="6384473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tomato" source="Orion">tomato</keyword> is expected to come down with the increase in arrival of new crop from Nasik, Naryangoan and Aurangabad belt in <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> and also from Madhya Pradesh, Centre told the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Minster of State Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ashwini Kumar Choubey made the statement in a written reply to the query of a Rajya Sabha member. The Minister further said the Department of Consumer Affairs monitors the daily prices of 22 essential food commodities including tomato. In order to check the current increase in prices of tomato and make it available to the consumers at affordable prices, the Minister said, the government has started the procurement of tomatoes under <keyword id="1397365" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="price-stabilisation-fund" source="Orion">Price Stabilisation Fund</keyword> and is making it available at a highly subsidised rate to consumers. Choube said the <keyword id="535083" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="national-cooperative-consumers-federation" source="Orion">National Cooperative Consumers Federation</keyword> (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) are continuously procuring tomato from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra and making it available at affordable prices in major consuming centres in Delhi-NCR, Bihar and Rajasthan after subsidizing the price to the consumers. "The tomatoes have been disposed initially at retail price of Rs 90 per kg which has been reduced to Rs 80 per kg from July 16 and further reduced to Rs 70 per kg from July 20," said the Minister while responding to the query of Kartikeya Sharma, who asked about the measures taken by the government to monitor and regulate tomato prices to ensure affordability for consumers. "Current increase in tomato prices may incentivize farmers to grow more tomato crop which is expected to stabilize the prices in coming months." The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DAFW) implements Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) to protect the growers of perishable agri-horticultural commodities from making distress sale in the event of a bumper crop during the peak arrival period when the prices tend to fall below economic levels and cost of production, said the Minister. "Under the scheme, the loss on account of the fall in price is borne between the Central Government and State Government on 50:50 basis. Since the inception of MIS till date, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has not received any proposal from State Governments for market intervention to address distress sale of tomato," Choube said. Ministry of Food Processing Industries implements <keyword id="6202539" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="operation-greens" source="Orion">Operation Greens</keyword> for enhancing value addition and reduction in post-harvest losses of agri-horticultural commodities, including tomato, said the Minister, adding "the objectives of the scheme are enhancing value realization of produce for farmers; protect the growers from making distress sale; increase in food processing/preservation capacities and value addition; and (iv) reduction in post-harvest losses." He said the scheme has both short-term interventions component and long-term interventions component. "The short-term interventions include transportation and storage subsidy to individual farmers, group of farmers, farmer producer organisations, farmer producer companies, cooperative societies, State Marketing and Co-operative Federation, food processors, licensed commission agents, exporters and retailers. Under the long term interventions, grants-in-aid are being provided for Integrated Value Chain Development Projects and Stand-alone Post Harvest Infrastructure Projects," added the Minister. Prices of tomato expected to come down with increase in arrival of new crop from Maharashtra: Govt to Rajya Sabha

New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Freshly procured tomatoes, which arrived in the national capital overnight, are to be sold in the retail markets here by the government agency National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF), starting today. The kitchen staple will be sold at Rs 90 per kg, the consumer affairs department said. Amid a sharp spurt in tomato prices across the country, the Central government on Wednesday directed its agricultural marketing agencies - NAFED and NCCF - to immediately procure the staple vegetable from mandis in key growing states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The sharp rise in tomato prices has been reported across the country, and is not just limited to a particular region or geography. In key cities, it rose to as high as Rs 150-160 per kg. Once procured, these freshly procured tomatoes are to be despatched for simultaneous distribution in major consumption centres where retail prices have recorded maximum increase in the past one month. The periods during July-August and October-November are generally the lean production months for tomato. The stocks of tomato will be distributed through retail outlets at "discounted prices" to the consumers in Delhi NCR region by Friday, this week, an official release said Wednesday. Tomato is produced almost in all the states in India, though in varying quantities. The southern and western regions of India accounts for 56-58 per cent of total tomato production in the country. "Southern and Western regions being surplus states, feed to other markets depending on production seasons. The production seasons are also different across regions. The peak harvesting season occurs from December to February," the food ministry had said. "The cycle of planting and harvesting seasons and variation across regions are primarily responsible for price seasonality in Tomato. Apart from the normal price seasonality, temporary supply chain disruptions and crop damage due to adverse weather conditions etc. often lead to sudden spikes in prices," it added. The government attributed the rise in prices to the monsoon season, saying that it added to further challenges related to distribution and increased transit losses. Tomatoes have a relatively lower shelf life. Currently, the supplies coming to markets in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and some other states are mostly from Maharashtra especially Satara, Narayangaon, and Nashik, which is expected to last till this month end. Madanapalle (Chittoor) in Andhra Pradesh also has seen continued arrivals in reasonable quantities. The arrivals in Delhi NCR are mainly from Himachal Pradesh and some quantity comes from Kolar in Karnataka. New crop arrivals are expected soon from Nashik district. Further, in August, additional supply is expected to come from Narayangaon and Aurangabad belt. Madhya Pradesh arrivals are also expected to start, the government said. According to the database maintained by the Price Monitoring Division under the Department of Consumer Affairs, per kilogram tomato on average rose by Rs 60-100 this month of what they were in retail markets in early June. Data showed prices of tomatoes in Delhi going up exponentially from Rs 20 per kg in early June to Rs 110 last week. Similarly, in Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, three key consuming regions, the prices per kilogram rose to Rs 117, Rs 100, and Rs 148. Data showed the rates of the staple vegetable tomato were in tune with the rise in their prices in wholesale markets, which jumped substantially on average in June. The rise in tomato and other vegetable prices was reflected in the June retail inflation data. Bucking the trend, retail inflation in India rose considerably in June to 4.81 per cent, largely due to a sharp spurt in vegetable prices. Vegetables, meat and fish; eggs; pulses and products; spices indices saw an uptick. Back in May, the retail inflation (final) was at 4.31 per cent, hitting a two-year low. It was at 4.7 per cent in April and 5.7 per cent the previous month. (ANI)

Freshly procured Tomatoes available at 90 Rs. KG from today in Delhi

Even as the soaring prices of tomatoes are burning a hole in the common man's pocket, a farmer from Pune in Maharashtra has become a millionaire by selling his bountiful yield of the key kitchen staple for ₹3 crore in just over a month while overcoming various challenges. Farmer Ishwar Gaykar (36), from Pachghar village in Junnar tehsil of Pune district, had faced a difficult decision of dumping a large quantity of harvested tomatoes in May this year due to low prices. Undeterred by the setback, he continued to exhibit unwavering determination and work tirelessly on his 12-acre farm to cultivate tomatoes. Now, amid the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, Gaykar's hard work has paid off handsomely, transforming him into a millionaire as he claimed to have earned ₹3 crore through the sale of his crop yield between June 11 and July 18. Talking to PTI, Gaykar said during the period, he sold 18,000 crates of tomatoes (each crate comprising 20 kg of tomatoes) at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Narayangaon in Junnar tehsil for ₹3 crore. He aims to earn another ₹50 lakh by selling the remainder of the produce, which is roughly 4,000 crates. The total input cost of cultivation, including transportation, was ₹40 lakh, he said. "I have an 18-acre farm where I cultivate tomatoes on 12 acres. I have sold 18,000 crates since June 11 and have so far earned ₹3 crore," said Gaykar. On June 11, his produce fetched a price of ₹770 per crate (₹37-38 per kg), and on July 18, he sold tomatoes at ₹2,200 per crate (₹110 per kg ). Gaykar, who is now happy to earn handsome dividends on the produce, recalled how he had to dump a large quantity of harvested tomatoes just two months back due to low prices. "This is the best of times for the tomato growers, but we have witnessed worst times also. In the month of May, I grew tomatoes on one-acre land, but had to throw away large quantities of the produce as the prices were very low. I had thrown the produce away as the per crate rate was just ₹50, which means ₹2.50 per kg," he said. Gaykar also said that in 2021, he incurred losses worth ₹15-16 lakh and last year also he just earned a narrow profit margin. "When I was throwing the tomatoes in May this year, this yield on the 12-acre land was under cultivation. Undeterred by the setback, I kept up my resilience and commitment towards farming and continued spending on the cultivation of tomatoes," he said. "I took good care of the produce even in the scorching May heat. Due to the high temperatures, tomato cultivation in other parts took a beating, but farmers like me benefitted as we continued to work hard," he said. Another farmer Raju Mahale, who earned more than ₹20 lakh by selling 2,500 crates in the current season, said he was also jittery about tomato cultivation after May as the per acre input cost was around ₹3.5 lakh. But, he went ahead with the cultivation, receiving good dividends now. Narayangaon agriculture market trader Akshay Solat, who purchased Gaykar's produce, said as there was a boom in the market again, he purchased tomatoes at ₹ 2,400 per crate. "I have been in this trading business for the last 15 years, but I have never seen such a boom in the tomato market. Once there was a rate of ₹ 1,500 to ₹ 1,600 per crate, but such price-wise consistency in the tomato market was never witnessed," he said. He, however, said only a handful of farmers have earned handsomely this season, including farmers from Pachghar, Otur, Ambegavhan, and Rokdi. Narayangaon APMC chief Sanjay Kale said generally in this season, their market receives 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh crates of tomatoes per day, but in the current season, it has dropped to 30,000 to 35,000 crates per day. "In the last two years, farmers incurred huge losses and could not recover their production costs, which resulted in a drop in production. During the summers, the tomato crop suffered from diseases, forcing the farmers to abandon their tomato farms," he said. "I generally get tomatoes from across the state, but because of the aforementioned reasons, the market committee is receiving the produce from Junnar and Ambegaon tehsils. These are the reasons why tomato prices have skyrocketed and demand has soared," he said. Kale said since the production of tomatoes has taken a beating in north India, traders from other states come to the market in Narayangaon to purchase the key kitchen staple. The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) last week started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of ₹ 90 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Patna in a bid to provide relief to consumers amid the high prices. The Centre had directed the two cooperatives to procure tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for distribution in major consumption centres, where retail prices have recorded maximum increase in the last month. "Though the NCCF and NAFED started selling tomatoes at the discounted rate, the government is buying the produce at ₹ 110 or ₹ 120 per kg, so farmers will continue to get what they are getting now," Kale said.

Even the sown area of oilseeds, cotton and Jute and Mesta have fallen sharply,” say economists at Bank of Baroda. Economists at HDFC say that uneven distribution of rainfall is the reason for the blip in sowing. “This could be due to weak rainfall progress in major rice and tur producing states. Looking ahead, as the majority of the season’s sowing takes place in July, rainfall progress during the month would be crucial,” say economists at HDFC. Eastern belt states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and in Central (Maharashtra) and Southern region of Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala have received deficient rainfall. Then there is the El Nino effect which might impact the entire monsoon season. On the other hand, signaling a bounty year for millets, sowing seen in bajra or pearl millet was much more than that of last year. Jowar or sorghum also saw higher sowing, along with coarse cereals – and a marginal growth in sugarcane. The year of 2023 has been declared the year of millets by United Nations, and apart from the Union Budget push, most state governments like Chattisgarh and Odisha are providing incentives to farmers Although, if weather conditions turn for the worse and have a material impact on the inflation outlook, rate cut expectations by the RBI could be pushed back further in 2024,” HDFC believes. A recent report by Kotak Institutional Equities says that a weak monsoon in July-August could make this a broad-based upside across various food items. “This may not bode well for market expectations of an early rate cut cycle. We estimate inflation to average around 5% in FY2024 without any significant impact of monsoons and 5.3% in case monsoons were to disappoint and we see a more broad-based pickup in food prices,” Kotak says.

The retail price of tomatoes has shot up in various districts of Karnataka especially in Bengaluru after supply crunch due to incessant rains. The price of tomatoes touched Rs 60 per kg at some places in Bengaluru from Rs 10 or Rs 15 per kg. Traders say that if the the same situation continues, the price will be close to Rs 100 in the state capital. The sudden rise in the price is due to shortage in supply from the surrounding rural areas of Bengaluru and Maharashtra. In the month of September, the maximum price of tomato hovered around Rs 15 per kg. Incessant rains over a month in neighbouring districts of Chikkaballapur, Kolar and Bengaluru Rural and low temperatures in the region have hit the tomato crop hard. Farmers are unable to cultivate tomatoes as their lands are wet due to continuous rains and they say that the situation has affected 50 per cent of the production of the crop. There is a 40 per cent reduction in the arrival of tomatoes from Kolar, Chintamani, Doddaballapur, Chikkaballapur, Malur, Magadi and other surrounding areas to APMC. "We are also not getting tomatoes from the various parts of Maharashtra. Due to an increase in the demand, the prices are moving upwards," says Gopi, Vegetable Sellers Association President. "If the same climate continues, the tomatoes rate will touch close to Rs 100," he says. Sources in the Horticultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Processing Society (HOPCOMS), explained that every day there was an arrival of 2 tonnes of tomatoes and now the supply is decreasing for over a week. Due to the shortage of supply, the prices have shot up. If the trend continues, tomatoes are all set to burn the pockets of the common man, they say.

Chhattisgarh administered by the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> member <keyword id="65641" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raman-Singh">Raman Singh</keyword> has been demanding adequate cold storage facilities for preservation of crops. Unfortunately it’s been a decade, neither a cold storage nor food processing factories have been set up. And there is a reason. The city of Mumbai is saddled with the costliest market price of this staple food—at ₹140 per kilogram (kg). This of course is for good quality onions. There is a large market for partly squashed and rotting onions as well, which is going at an exorbitant price of ₹80 a kilo. For good quality onions though, the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/commodities/news/wholesale-onion-prices-hit-rs-100/kg/articleshow/72269648.cms">wholesale price </a>itself hit a ₹100.  In the city of Hyderabad however, government owned farmer’s markets called Rythu Bazaars are selling onions ₹30 below the market rate. “But for that we have to stand in line for hours together and show Aadhar cards. Even after that, only a limited quantity of onions is given like one or two kgs,” Jaya RaviShankar, a homemaker from the city, told Business Insider. The high price of onion and garlic, which is also above ₹120 a kilo, has affected the sale of meat and meat products. The retail prices of chicken came down by ₹10 as per data collected from Navi Mumbai market in Vashi. The price of onions went up considerably after erratic rains affected crops in major onion producing states like Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. Rains have been affecting the supply and consumption of many fruits and vegetables but the rising cost of staples has been disrupting Indian home economics. Last month, tomato prices have peaked to around ₹70 per kilo. That had forced Delhi government to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/news/indian-government-is-offering-puree-as-an-alternative-to-costly-tomatoes/articleshow/71534211.cms">peddle tomato puree </a>as an alternative—especially during the festive season.

Desperate Indians queue up for cheap onions or buy half rotten ones as prices soar

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Agro-chemical firm Crystal Crop Protection Ltd on Monday said it has acquired three insecticide brands from US-based Corteva Agriscience, which will help the company to generate an additional revenue of about Rs 50 crore annually.
The company has seven manufacturing plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana. It posted a net profit of about Rs 130 crore over a turnover of around Rs 1,400 crore during the last financial year.
"We have acquired three premium insecticides brands Dursban, Nurelle-D and Predator brands in India from Corteva Agriscience," Crystal Crop MD Ankur Aggarwal told .
This is Crystal's fifth acquisition in last two years and is part of the company's strategy to diversify product portfolio and widen its market presence, he added.
"This acquisition is a part of Crystal's strategy to add value to its business and ensure growth for all its stakeholders. We believe such strategic acquisitions would improve our competitiveness, further help in diversifying our product portfolio and thus strengthen our market presence across India," Aggarwal said.
Aggarwal said these three brands would give Rs 40-50 crore revenue annually.
Corteva Agriscience is a major American agricultural chemical and seed company. Originally an agricultural unit of DowDuPont, it later became one of the major stand alone agricultural organizations in the world.
While Dursban is a specialty insecticide that offers control of more than 280 pests, Predator is broad-spectrum insecticide for control of pests of cotton and rice.
Nurrelle D offers pest protection to mainly potato, tomato, apple, peach and plum plants.
In 2018, Crystal acquired a specialty chemicals manufacturing facility at Nagpur from Cytec India.
After that it acquired Indian grain sorghum, pearl millet and fodder sorghum seeds business from Syngenta India, followed by the acquisition of four brands namely Furadan, Splendour, Affinity Force and Metcil from FMC India Limited.
Crystal also bought three brands from Syngenta, namely Tilt, Proclaim and Blue Copper.
In 2016, it had signed an agreement with Germany's BASF SE to acquire the brand Bavistin for use in India.

Crystal Crop acquires 3 insecticide brands from Corteva Agriscience

New Delhi, Dec 1 () State-owned trading firm MMTC, which is importing onion on the behalf of the Centre, has placed an order of 11,000 tonnes of edible bulb from Turkey as part of its efforts to boost domestic supply and ease soaring prices, sources said.
This is the second import order placed by the MMTC. The public sector firm is already importing 6,090 tonnes from Egypt.
Last month, the Union Cabinet approved importing 1.2 lakh tonnes of onion to improve the domestic supply and control prices that have skyrocketed to Rs 75-120 per kg across major cities now. The Centre has already banned exports and imposed stockholding limit on wholesalers and retailers for indefinite period.
According to sources, MMTC has contracted 11,000 tonnes of onion imports from Turkey and the consignments are expected in January next year. 
 The company had placed an order for the first consignment of 6,090 tonnes of onion from Egypt which will be arriving at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai in the second week of this month. The imported onion is being offered to state governments for distribution at the rate of Rs 52-55 per kg ex-Mumbai and Rs 60 per kg ex-Delhi.
To monitor onion prices, a Group of Ministers, chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah, has already been constituted. Finance minister, consumer affairs minister, agriculture minister and road transport minister are also members of this panel. A Committee of Secretaries (CoS) and Consumer Affairs Secretary Avinash K Srivastava is also constantly reviewing the situation.
Onion prices remain high across the major cities of the country as the average selling price ruled at Rs 75 per kg on Saturday (November 30) while the maximum rate of Rs 120 per kg was recorded in Mayabunder, according to the data compiled by the Consumer Affairs ministry.
On November 19, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had said onion production in kharif and late-kharif seasons of 2019-20 is estimated to fall 26 per cent to 5.2 million tonne.
Onion is a seasonal crop with harvesting period of (March to June), kharif (October to December) and late-kharif (January-March). During July to October, the supply in the market comes from stored onions from rabi (winter-sown) season. 
"During 2019-20, there was a 3-4 weeks delay in sowing as well as decline in sown area of the kharif onion because of late arrival of monsoon. Further, untimely prolonged rains in the major growing states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh during the harvesting period caused damage to the standing crops in these regions," Paswan had said.
"It's not in our hand, the government is making maximum efforts but who can win from nature," he recently told reporters when asked by when onion prices will come down to reasonable level.
According to the consumer affairs ministry data, onion is being sold at Rs 76 per kg in the national capital, Rs 82 in Mumbai, Rs 90 per kg in Kolkata and Rs 80 per kg in Chennai. 
The lowest price of Rs 42 per kg of the bulb was reported from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and Vijaywada, the data showed.
The ministry monitors prices of 22 essential commodities (rice, wheat, atta, gram dal, tur (arhar) dal, urad dal , moong dal, masur dal, sugar, gur, groundnut oil, mustard oil, vanaspati, sunflower oil, soya oil, palm oil, tea, milk, potato, onion, tomato and salt) based on data collected from 109 market centres spread across the country. When the 28-member <keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword> imposed a ban on the import of the ‘king of fruits’ at a time when its production hits the peak, it must have taken a lot of conviction to execute the order. Although the strongest reaction came from the Indian side, what caught EU unawares is the widespread criticism from exporters, consumers and even lawmakers. Some are protesting the ban as they have to forfeit their annual chance to savour this succulent, sweet and aromatic fruit that dazzles with its golden-yellow-tinged-with-bright-orange hue. But lawmakers and policy advisors are worried because this may trigger a diplomatic row between the EU and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region>, one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

	 

	The ban itself is not too relevant for a fruit that does not thrive on preservatives. In 2013, about 207 boxes of mangoes were found infested with fruit flies that were ‘not of European origin.’ Authorities in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on"><keyword id="59706" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Brussels">Brussels</keyword></st1:place></st1:city>, who were inspecting the consignment, sent out panic signals.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	This triggered off a discussion regarding the potential harm the fruit flies might cause if and when they are ‘unleashed’ in the EU nations. In fact, the situation was considered close to a pre-timed nuclear bomb ticking away somewhere, to wipe the life off the face of the EU nations. But the most important aspect of the ban is that it is ‘temporary’ in nature. To make the whole thing a little smoother and politically correct, the ban also included some veggies – aubergines, two varieties of squash and a variety of leafs specifically used for Indian cooking.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	As far as the ‘mango ban’ goes, the most metaphorical protest came from Keith Vaz, the Labour Party MP from Leicester, a region that hosts a ‘mango festival’ as an annual ritual. The prestigious event, well attended by the who’s who of the region, enjoys great solidarity as well. So the hurt was evident. But unfortunately, the dent was already made. Vaz, armed with a box of the most succulent mangoes, perhaps one from the last lot to arrive on the European shores, delivered those to <st1:address w:st="on"><st1:street w:st="on">10 Downing Street</st1:street></st1:address> – the residence of the British <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword>, <keyword id="6430216" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="David-Cameron">David Cameron</keyword>. The normal course of events followed and Cameron assured that he is the champion of healthy trade relationships with <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> and he would certainly help in this case, to the best of his abilities.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	The ban on the king of fruits will remain in force till December 2015, in order to save the European salad crops, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. A newspaper in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> jocularly interpreted this situation in its editorial and said that the EU nations were ‘giving up mangoes for salad.’ And what a trade-off that will be.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	Interestingly, the UK alone imports around 16 million mangoes worth £6.3 million from India while its total mango market is worth £68 million. Other countries such as <st1:country-region w:st="on">Mexico</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Brazil</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Indonesia</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Thailand</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Pakistan</st1:country-region></st1:place> also export mangoes to nations that come under the EU umbrella. However, Indian mangoes have achieved a near-mythical status and enjoy the global reputation of being the best among its peers. Nearly 30% of the juiciest and sweetest mangoes, grown in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri region, are exported, especially to the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	With this current ban on Indian mangoes, diplomatic relations are bound to suffer to an extent, but the common man, referred to as the aam aadmi in India, is not complaining. By the way, aam in Hindi language also means mango. Truly, the scorching summer of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> becomes bearable for many regions just because there is the hope that mangoes will, sooner or later, help people shift focus from heat to sweet.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	As a result of the EU ban on mangoes, the most coveted varieties including Hapuz, Langra and Dusheri, which would have found their way to foreign homes via chartered flights, have now entered the Indian markets, much to the joy of the middle-class households. The princely fruit, which usually costs an arm and a leg, is now quite affordable. That’s definitely good news as the mango-diplomacy reaches its pinnacle during the days of abundance and basketfuls are exchanged between families as a warm gesture. Thanks to the ban, Indian mangoes have only turned sweeter for the Indians this season. It is one of those rare occasions when a diplomatic crisis is actually not a crisis, for at least one of the countries involved.
