Mumbai: Indian stock markets rallied on Monday after the <keyword id="20032950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP-led-government" source="keywords">BJP-led government</keyword> secured a majority in the latest state elections in Maharashtra. The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index gained more than 1.45 per cent or 346.30 points to open at 24,253.55 points, while the BSE <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> index surged 1,076 points or 1.36 percent to open at 80,193.47 points. Experts noted that the election results have an impact on the markets today, and if past trends are followed, the markets may witness some rally amid the return of the BJP in the Maharashtra state elections. <keyword id="20161891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Bagga" source="keywords">Ajay Bagga</keyword> Banking and Market Expert stated that "The just concluded elections in Maharashtra, the results of which were declared on November 23rd, will have a positive immediate impact on the stock markets. The landslide win for the BJP lead coalition in the Maharashtra state elections could lead to a short-term boost to the Indian stock markets which have been in a declining mode" He further added "Investors will interpret this mandate as favourable for the capex and infrastructure push that is ongoing in Maharashtra. The beneficiary sectors of this election are industrials, infrastructure, manufacturing, real estate and financials". In the sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange, <keyword id="20065014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-Realty" source="keywords">Nifty Realty</keyword> and <keyword id="19941314" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-PSU-Bank" source="keywords">Nifty PSU Bank</keyword> rallied with a surge of more than 2 percent, while other major indices also gained more than 1.5 per cent, including Nifty Metal, Nifty Media, and Nifty Oil &amp; Gas. In the Nifty 50 list, 49 stocks gained during the opening session, while only one stock declined. Shri Finance opened as the top gainer in the Nifty 50. The shares of the AdGroup also surged around 2 percent at the time of filing this report. <keyword id="19967296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Green" source="keywords">Adani Green</keyword> also climbed around 4 percent. "We are most likely to break the falling 20-day average that lies at 24,030, which will be the first time that'd happen since the record high of 27th September. Seasonality trends between now and the end of the year have been historically positive, with the Nifty rising 80% of the time during this period with an average return of over 4 per cent" Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities. In other Asian markets, Japan and South Korea indices rallied. The Nikkei 225 index surged more than 1.5 percent, South Korea's Kospi also rose by 1.5 percent, Taiwan's Weighted Index was up by 0.48 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down marginally by 0.14 percent at the time of filing this report.

Nifty, Sensex rallied around 1.5 % after Maharashtra election results, Experts noted short term rally

In a recent notification, the <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords">NSE</keyword> (National Stock Exchange) noted that markets will remain closed on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, on account of state elections taking place in Maharashtra. However, <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords">BSE</keyword> has issued no notification on this matter so far. However, given how both the exchanges largely operate in sync, BSE is likely to declare a holiday as well. Before the elections, both BSE and NSE will be shut for trading on November 15 as well, on account of <keyword id="23718443" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guru-Nanak-Jayanti" source="keywords">Guru Nanak Jayanti</keyword>. Next month, the bourses will remain closed for regular trade on Christmas, i.e., December 25. Earlier this week, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mandated that all businesses and workplaces in Mumbai should grant paid leave on November 20, 2024, to all its employees so that they can participate in state elections. Failure to do so could mean penalties for employers. All the 288 states in the Maharashtra state assembly are set to go to polls in a single phase on November 20. <h2>Markets close the week on muted note </h2>Both Nifty and Sensex closed the week on a damp note, with Nifty dipping 0.21% to close at 24,148.20 points. On the other hand, Sensex also slipped below the 80,000 mark to close the week at 79,486.32 points. Of the 50 stocks that constitute Nifty, 23 stocks advanced during the day, while 27 saw declines. However, this week has not been all that bad for the markets, with Nifty rising 0.31% and Sensex inching up 0.65% during the last 5 days. All broad market indices fell during today's trade, with smallcaps falling by over 1.5%, while midcaps also closed the day over 1% down. As for sectoral indices, most of them ended the week in reds, with realty and media losing over 2% during trading today. Pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and consumer durables recorded marginal upticks during the day, inching up by 0.07%, 0.22%, and 0.41%, respectively. FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>) continued their selling spree today as well. In this month so far, FIIs have been net cash sellers, offloading around Rs 16,445.49 crore. DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have stepped in to maintain some balance by becoming net buyers worth Rs 12,265.74 crore in November till date. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities, explains that global market sentiment saw sharp volatility in the aftermath of Republicans winning all three branches of the US government, resulting in rising US bond yields and the dollar, as well as the US equity markets beating most EMs. Meanwhile, the Q2 FY25 earnings season continued to remain weak, with more misses than hits observed. <keyword id="20993056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPI-flows" source="keywords">FPI flows</keyword> are expected to remain volatile for some time to come. Amidst emerging markets, only Brazil saw inflows worth $115 million between November 1 and 7, 2024.

Markets to remain shut on November 20 due to Maharashtra elections

With Indian stock markets touching new highs, people from states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal are participating in share markets actively, highlighted a latest report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The report highlighted that these three states are now leading in terms of the number of investors actively participating in the stock market, after Maharashtra and Gujarat which are traditional base of investors in the country. Maharashtra continues to lead the country in registered stock market investors, with 1.7 crore investors, making up 16.8 per cent of the total investor base, according to the National Stock Exchange. Uttar Pradesh holds the second spot, surpassing 1 crore investors in April and reaching 1.1 crore by August and holds 11.1 per cent of the total investors. Gujarat has figured at third place with 88.5 lakh investors (8.7 per cent), West Bengal with 59 lakh (5.8 per cent), and Rajasthan with 57.8 lakh (5.7 per cent). Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal combined now accounts for almost one out of every four investors in the stock markets. In its report, the NSE stated, "It is also interesting to note that the top five states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal now comprise nearly half (48 pc) of all investors in the country." This data highlights the significant role these states are playing in shaping the overall stock market landscape in India. The report also revealed an emerging trend, the North and East India region is showing the highest growth in <keyword id="22721561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-investor-registrations" source="keywords">new investor registrations</keyword>. Over the past year, these regions have added a substantial number of new investors, further broadening the investor base across the country. Interestingly, the report also noted that states outside the top 10 now make up 27 per cent, up from 23 per cent in FY20. Last month the Indian stock markets achieved a significant milestone as the total number of <keyword id="22721559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="registered-investors" source="keywords">registered investors</keyword> in the country crossed the 10 crore mark in August. In the last two years, there has been a rapid rise in scams in India and a lot of people have lost their hard-earned money after trusting strangers for financial advice. Be it a fraudulent app, being added to a shady WhatsApp group, or receiving phone calls from strangers that sound too good to be true, many cases have come to light. Now, in a new incident, a doctor from Thane, Maharashtra, was misled by three Karnataka-based suspects who promised earnings via a municipal contract to supply medical equipment, costing him ₹3.84 crore. Despite investing over a three-year period, he saw no returns and reported the crime to the Naupada police, who have registered a case but made no arrests. Thane doctor tricked by false municipal contract According to a PTI report, a 39-year-old doctor in Thane, Maharashtra was deceived by three men from Karnataka. These fraudsters offered him lucrative returns through a supposed municipal contract for supplying medical equipment. Convinced by the promise of reliable profits, the doctor began investing heavily in December 2020, making significant contributions until March this year. The doctor’s substantial investment – totalling ₹3.84 crore – was made over multiple transactions from December 2020 and March this year, in anticipation of high returns that never materialised. Suspicion finally arose after the doctor had seen no profits despite his repeated investments. Recognising he may have been defrauded, he reached out to the Naupada police station, who registered a case under charges of cheating. While no arrests have been made so far, authorities have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators and recover the funds if possible. A police official told PTI, "The man approached police after he did not get profits or any return on investment. We have registered a case of cheating but have not arrested anyone." Ahmedabad gynaecologist duped in <keyword id="21361161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="stock-market-scam" source="keywords">stock market scam</keyword> In a similar incident, a gynaecologist from Ahmedabad lost ₹1.1 crore to a scam that began with a social media advertisement. Attracted by the potential for substantial stock market returns, the doctor engaged with a group promising expert tips and was subsequently added to a WhatsApp group where members shared investment insights. Through this group, he was introduced to a web link for stock and IPO investments, along with an application that required his banking details and identification documents. A PTI report revealed that the doctor’s initial investment of ₹50,000 yielded a profit of ₹10,000, which he successfully withdrew. This initial success encouraged him to make larger investments, transferring ₹1.1 crore through multiple transactions in pursuit of higher gains. When he later attempted to withdraw his funds, he was unexpectedly asked to pay 20% of his total profits. After refusing this demand, he was removed from the WhatsApp group and realised the extent of the deception. He contacted Cybercrime police in February, and after months of waiting, a formal case was registered against unknown suspects under charges of breach of trust and cheating, alongside provisions of the <keyword id="20003647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act" source="keywords">Information Technology Act</keyword>.

Thane doctor gets cheated of ₹3.84 crore, was promised high financial returns by 3 men

Notably, these five states collectively account for approximately 50% of total client accounts, while the top ten states represent about three-quarters of the total registrations. Additionally, the unique registered investor base on NSE stood at 10.5 crore, having crossed the 10-crore mark on August 8, 2024. <h2><keyword id="20849031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="young-investors" source="keywords">Young investors</keyword> take the lead</h2>Another notable trend that emerged from NSE's latest report is the significant increase in young investor participation. The proportion of investors under 30 years has nearly doubled, rising from 22.9% in March 2018 to 40% by September 2024. Middle-aged investors, aged between 30 and 39, have maintained their participation in the markets, albeit with a slight hit. On the other hand, investors aged between 40 and 49 have witnessed a dip in market participation, dipping to 15.5% in September 2024, as opposed to 20.3% as of March 2018. Similar downtrends were noticed in other age brackets as well, namely 50-59 and 60+ age cohorts. Financial analysts suggest that younger investors bring a new dynamic to the market, often favoring high-growth, technology-driven investments. In contrast, older investors have traditionally leaned toward more stable and conservative options.

NSE client base surges past 20 crore mark; young investors lead market growth

The stock of the Mumbai-headquartered firm plunged 9.46% to ₹4,139.95 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). On the BSE, it depreciated by 9.37% to ₹4,143.60 per piece. The company's <keyword id="20000950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-capitalisation" source="keywords">market capitalisation</keyword> (mcap) fell by ₹27,900.18 crore to ₹2,69,637.75 crore on the BSE. Meanwhile, the 30-share <keyword id="19950208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE-Sensex" source="keywords">BSE Sensex</keyword> jumped 443.71 points or 0.55% to 81,825.07 in early trade, while the NSE Nifty increased 131.85 points or 0.53% to 25,096.10. In a regulatory filing on Saturday, Avenue Supermarts reported a 5.78% increase in its consolidated net profit at ₹659.44 crore for the second quarter ended September 2024. The company had posted a net profit of ₹623.35 crore a year ago, the company said. Its revenue from operations rose 14.41% to ₹14,444.50 crore during the quarter under review. It was ₹12,624.37 crore in the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal. Avenue Supermarts' total expenses in the September quarter increased 14.94% to ₹13,574.83 crore. The total income, which includes other income, surged 14.34% to ₹14,478.02 crore, it added. DMart shares decline over 9% after earnings fail to cheer investors

However, despite this surge, the number of active participants remains relatively low compared to the total registered users, though it has been rising steadily since March. According to a report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), out of the 9.7 crore <keyword id="22721559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="registered-investors" source="keywords">registered investors</keyword>, only 1.5 crore are active. The report highlights that active investors on the NSE surged by 13.9 % month-on-month, reaching 1.5 crore in June. This marks the third consecutive month of growth in active market users. The NSE report shows that the number of individuals trading at least once a month grew by 13.1% in June, compared to May, reflecting a strong trend in <keyword id="21427519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-participation" source="keywords">market participation</keyword>. "The number of individual investors who traded at least once in June increased across regions. This individual investor base rose by 13.9 % month-on-month to reach 1.5 crore in June 2024," the report noted. It also points out that there has been a steady rise in active domestic investors after a decline earlier in the year, particularly in March. As of June, the number of active domestic market investors on the NSE from the top 10 states--Maharashtra, Gujarat, <keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana--stood at 1.2 crore. Maharashtra led the increase in June, significantly contributing to the new and active investor base in the stock markets. "Following a decline in March 2024, the count of individuals who traded at least once has been on a steady rise, increasing by 13.1% month-on-month to 1.2 crore for the top 10 states in June 2024," the NSE report stated. The report also noted a year-on-year growth in the number of registered investors. The total number of registered users reached 9.7 crore at the end of June, up from approximately 7.6 crore the previous year. "The total number of registered investors stood at 9.7 crore at the end of June, up from around 7.6 crore at the same time last year," the report added. Region-wise, Southern and Eastern India saw significant increases, with active investor bases rising by 16.8 % month-on-month to 29.1 lakh and 15.6 % month-on-month to 16.7 lakh, respectively. The Northern and Western regions also experienced growth, with investor bases reaching 55 lakh and 56 lakh, respectively, in June 2024. <h2>Nifty on the rise</h2>The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index began on April 22, 1996, with a starting value of 1136.28 points and has recently crossed 25,000 points, marking a growth of nearly 22 times. In less than four years from its inception, the index climbed to 1592.90 points, showcasing early signs of its potential. By December 2, 2004, just before the start of 2005, the Nifty 50 achieved a historic milestone by crossing the 2000-point mark, setting the stage for further growth amid challenges. The global financial crisis of 2008 tested the resilience of the Indian stock market. At the start of the year, the Nifty 50 was trading around 6,300 points, but by the end of 2008, it had plummeted to 2,500 points, reflecting the global economic turmoil. Despite this setback, India's <keyword id="20172097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-sector" source="keywords">financial sector</keyword> demonstrated remarkable strength. By December 31, 2009, less than a year after the crisis, the Nifty 50 had rebounded to 5,200 points. In September 2010, the Nifty index again reached the 6,000-point mark after a gap of over two years, marking a significant recovery. As 2014 began, the index was around 6,300 points, but by the end of the year, it had surged past 8,000 points, fuelled by optimism surrounding the new single-party majority government at the centre. A major milestone was achieved on July 25, 2017, when the Nifty 50 hit the 10,000-point mark, coinciding with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a landmark reform in the Indian indirect tax structure. The market faced another significant challenge with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. The Nifty 50, which had been trading around 12,000 points in January 2020, fell dramatically to about 7,500 points by March 2020. This sharp decline was one of the most significant losses for the index in a short span. Nevertheless, the resilience of the Indian stock market was evident, as the Nifty 50 began its recovery as the pandemic subsided. The recovery was swift and robust. By 2021, the Nifty 50 surpassed the 15,000-point mark, and the rally continued unabated. On August 1, 2024, the index achieved a new milestone, reaching 25,000 points. The Nifty 50 hit the 20,000-point mark for the first time on September 11, 2023, and took 221 trading days from that level to reach 25,000 points on August 1, 2024. This journey from the early days of 1136.28 points to the recent milestone of 25,000 points underscores the evolution of the Indian financial sector and its integral role in the country's economic development. Commenting on the Nifty's journey, Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, stated that "the journey of the Nifty reflects the growth of the Indian economy and various sectors. When the Nifty was created in the mid-1990s, the top companies were very different, from very different sectors. In these three years, IT, Pharma, Real Estate, Autoancillaries, and Telecom have emerged as new sectors with significant shares in the Nifty market cap. Going ahead, in the decades to come, there will again be a sectoral rotation as e-commerce, artificial intelligence, fintech and health tech companies rise to prominence."

Markets hit new milestones, robust surge in active traders as investor numbers soar

The NSE <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> ended marginally higher by 0.05 per cent to settle at 24,337, while the <keyword id="19950208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE-Sensex" source="keywords">BSE Sensex</keyword> closed slightly lower by 0.01 per cent at 79,914.26 points. <keyword id="20127603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-sentiment" source="keywords">Market sentiment</keyword> was subdued as investors awaited the first-quarter results of TCS and contended with the weekly expiry of Nifty futures and options contracts. The stocks of ONGC, BPCL, Coal India, ITC, and Tata Motors gained on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) while Tata Consumer Products, Bajaj Finance, M&amp;M, Divi's Laboratories, and NTPC underperformed, emerging as major laggards. In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index edged up by 0.2 per cent, and the SmallCap index advanced by 0.5 per cent. Market breadth was positive with more than 2,100 stocks advancing compared to 1,660 declining on the BSE. "It was another mildly volatile day for Indian markets, as can be expected at all-time high levels. The time-wise consolidation is on in the markets. After the initial negative print, the Nifty and Sensex recovered to end nearly flat while the midcap and small cap indices ended positive. Banks which have been under pressure over the last few sessions managed to end in the green. Overall the markets are looking for cues from the earnings season. The US CPI this evening will set the tone for a possible September rate cut in the US," said Ajay Bagga, Market Expert, observing today's market. "The recent Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decision allowing resident Indians to open bank accounts in foreign currencies at GIFT City is anticipated to significantly impact the investment landscape.
