Spanning over an area of 307,713 square kilometers, the state of Maharashtra has 8,74,34,919 registered and eligible voters on its electoral rolls. During 2019 <keyword id="6355187" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections, 542 out of 543 constituencies went for polling. The exit polls conducted by a majority of agencies had predicted a landslide victory for both BJP and Shiv Sena along with their allies. Chanakya and India Today My Axis exit polls presumed that NDA, the BJP led alliance would win from more than 350 seats. However, Neta-News X and News-Nielsen forecast the alliance might fall short of a few seats for majority with 242 and 267 seats predicted by them for the alliance respectively. While Neta-NewsX has predicted the lowest number of seats for the alliance at 242 constituencies, Chanakya has forecasted about 350 seats, the maximum for the alliance announced by any exit poll agency for 2019 Lok Sabha election result. The Chanakya exit poll has also forecasted a clean sweep for the BJP led alliance in the states of Gujarat, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Delhi where they might win all the 26, 10, 5 and 7 seats respectively. In 2014 general elections for the Lok Sabha, the results were favorable to the BJP with the party and its alliance winning a clear majority in the parliament by bagging 282 seats out of 543. This number was 166 seats more than what the alliance scored in 2009 parliamentary elections. There are 269 sitting MPs representing the BJP and 18 MPs representing Shiv Sena in the Lok Sabha formed after 2014 election result in addition to the MPs of their allies in NDA. The landslide submerged Malin village in Pune district of Maharashtra state, said Alok Avasthy, regional commandant at the National Disaster Response Force.
"Civil authorities say around 42 to 50 houses are affected. 150 people are feared trapped. We have sent two teams," Avasthy told AFP.
He said that it was difficult to confirm casualties as the village has been cut off from communications.
Indian television station CNN-IBN said five people were killed in the landslide while another five have been rescued.
Heavy machinery has been mobilised to try to rescue those feared trapped, while about 30 ambulances have been rushed to the scene, local government official Saurav Rao told the Press Trust of India news agency.
"Exact number of causalities is not known as we are moving slowly to ensure that those trapped are removed safely," district collector Rao said.
Heavy rains have been falling for days in Maharashtra as a result of the annual monsoon.
Almost 6,000 people are presumed to have died during flash floods and landslides triggered by last year's monsoon rains in the northern India state of Uttarakhand.
