Maharashtra government has announced that it will be cancelling class 10 and class 12 state board exams, this year. Some people had opposed the cancellation of exams but in todays meeting with CM Thackeray, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and other officials concerned, it was decided to cancel the exams, Wadettiwar said. School education minister Varsha Gaikwad had said on Wednesday that a proposal has been sent to the state disaster management authority to take a final call on these exams. Maharashtra decides to cancel class 10 and 12 board exams

A study backed by ICMR and Imperial College of London’s CHROMIC model predicts that Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh may ideally see a dip in the number of COVID-19 cases or at least may not be hit as badly as the previous wave. The major reason behind this could be strong immunity acquired post-vaccination, which can decrease the number of symptomatic cases in every state. Dr. Samiran Panda, ICMR’s epidemiology and communicable disease (ECD) head said, as <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/pune/third-wave-likely-to-be-less-severe-says-icmr/articleshow/85749273.cms">quoted</a> by The Times of India, “Nobody can predict the third wave for the whole country. It will now make sense only if district or state-specific data are used for specific projections. The wave may rear its head only if states remove restrictions prematurely.” He further said that the third wave is likely to arrive only when there is a decline in natural or vaccination boosted immunities, a new and more dangerous variant takes birth like Delta variant or there is a relaxation in the states without following appropriate COVID behaviour or people refraining themselves from getting the vaccine shots. Dr. Panda also highlighted that the states or districts where the cases were low may witness a high number of cases, whereas states/districts that reported a high number of cases may hit with a low number of cases during the third wave. He further strongly urged the states to not allow mass gatherings. “Intensified vaccination and following COVID protocols is the only way ahead”, he added. ICMR predicts third wave of COVID-19 to be less severe than the second wave — Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh may see a decline

Chouhan issued the directives in this regard during a meeting held on Friday, an official statement said. "It will be mandatory for the travellers coming from Maharashtra to carry a <keyword id="8734505" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="negative-report">negative report</keyword> for <keyword id="1559124" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus-infection">coronavirus infection</keyword>. The responsibility for this will be with the bus operators, who will allow passengers to board the bus only on the basis of the report," Chouhan said. Adequate arrangements should be made for checking along the the state's border areas, he said. Chouhan said that the number of coronavirus cases in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Betul, Chhindwara, Ujjain and the state's districts bordering Maharashtra, has been on the rise. He also said that the situation in all the districts along the Maharashtra border should be monitored constantly. The chief minister expressed the possibility of imposition of night curfew in Indore and Bhopal- the two cities in the state that are worst-affected by the pandemic. "The coronavirus infection in Bhopal and Indore is continuously rising. If there is no drop in the COVID-19 cases in the next three days, then night curfew will be imposed in Bhopal and Indore from March 8," Chouhan said. The coronavirus cases in Indore have almost doubled over the last fortnight. Hence, there is a need to pay special attention in Indore and Bhopal,the chief minister said. On Friday, six persons in Indore district were found infected with the UK variant of coronavirus. These patients - all of them males aged between 19 and 49 years - had no history of foreign travel, an official had said. Madhya Pradesh on Friday reported 457 COVID-19 cases, taking the infection tally to 2,63,747, health officials said. With 176 new cases, Indore's caseload went up to 60,386, while that of Bhopal rose to 44,474 with the addition of 77 cases. Indore has so far reported 933 deaths and Bhopal 618. Madhya Pradesh mandates negative COVID-19 report for travellers from Maharashtra

Though the graph of COVID-19 cases has shown signs of decline, the <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> government, anticipating a second wave of the infection, has asked authorities not to drop guard and take all necessary steps to deal with any situation. A circular-cum-advisory issued by the state Directorate of Health Services last week said the second wave of the pandemic is likely in January-February, and asked officials concerned to ramp up COVID-19 testing in the state. It also asked authorities to identify potential 'super-spreaders', like grocery shop owners, people providing door-to-door services, those working in the transport field, labourers, security guards deployed in housing societies, police and home guards. "Several European countries are witnessing the second wave of COVID-19 currently. On the basis of that there is a possibility we may also get a second wave in January- February," said the circular. It has asked district administrations, municipal corporations and medical officers to ensure there is no laxity in laboratory testings, and asked them to do all testings as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), there should a ratio of 140 tests per million population, it said. The circular also asked authorities to continue the survey of people having an influenza-like illness, with the help of flu centres in urban and rural areas of the state. The house-to-house survey and contact-tracing should be done on war-footing, the circular said, and also asked to take proper care and screening of co-morbid population. Authorities have also been asked to ensure better bed management of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients in hospitals. The government has also asked district and civic administrations to ensure uninterrupted supply of oxygen and proper management of ambulances in hospitals. "People have been advised to wear masks and follow all the social distancing and hygiene norms such as regular hand wash, avoiding spitting in public areas and unnecessary travel," Health Services Director Dr Archana Patil said in the circular. Pune Collector Rajesh Deshmukh told PTI that as the number of infections has seen a decline in the district, the administration had allowed hospitals to use oxygenated COVID-19 beds for non-coronavirus treatment, but if the need be,they can be taken over again. "We are fully prepared to handle any situation. We have everything in place, be it testing, infrastructure or manpower," he added. Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally has gone up to 17,57,520 with the state reporting 5,011 new cases of infection on Wednesday. With 100 new deaths recorded on Wednesday, the state's death toll rose to 46,202, according to the health department.

Maharashtra officials asked to ramp up COVID testing in anticipation of a second wave in the state

Thane, Jun 24 () With the addition of 1,182 COVID- 19 positive cases, the number of patients in Maharashtra's Thane district went up to 24,674 on Wednesday, officials said. Most of the latest cases were reported from Navi Mumbai, they said. With 29 persons succumbing to the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection, the death toll in the district grew to 841, the officials said. A report from the Thane chapter of the IMA said in that one of its members, a 70-year-old ENT surgeon, died of COVID-19 at a private hospital here. With this, a total of four doctors have died due to the infection in Thane city, it said. Of the total 1,182 positive cases in Thane district, as many as 321 were reported from Navi Mumbai, followed by 222 in Kalyan Dombivali and 197 in Thane city, the officials said. In the neighbouring Palghar district, the number of positive cases grew to, 3062, while the death toll reached 106. Palghar District Collector Dr Kailas Shinde announced seven more containment zones in the district following the surge of the cases.

"On August 1, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state was 4,31,719, which jumped to 8,08,306 on September 1. This is probably the fastest growth of cases in the state since January," the health official said. One of the reasons for the growth in number of positive cases is the increased number of tests, he said, adding that last month, the state carried out 20,16,809 tests. "The number of tests conducted till August 1 was 21,94,943, which rose to 42,11,752 on September 1. The state is aggressively testing which is helping in detection of the infected people," the official said. The official informed that the number COVID-19 cases and deaths is continuously going up in the state. Between August 1 and 5, the number of COVID-19 cases rose by 36,546, and between September 1 and 5, the number went up by 75,556, the official said. Besides, the state reported 15,316 deaths due to the disease till August 1 and the number went up to 24,903 on September 1, as per the data. "Between August 1 and 5, 1,160 people died due to COVID-19 and between September 1 and 5, 1,373 people died," the official said. COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra nearly doubled in August, says Maharashtra health department

Aurangabad, Jun 24 () The number of COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district crossed the 4,000-mark on Wednesday after 200 more people tested positive, while 12 patients succumbed to the infection, an official said. The <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> count increased to 4,036 after the detection of 200 new cases in the district, he said. As of now, 1,601 patients are under treatment, the official said. Among the new cases, 112 are residents of Aurangabad city, while the remaining 88 are from rural areas of the district, he said. The number of recovered patients reached 2,217 after 81 more people were discharged from various facilities in Aurangabad, he said. Twelve more COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 218 in the district, the official added.

The number of cases include two persons who died in Delhi and Karnataka. While a 76-year-old man from Kalaburagi who had recently returned from Saudi Arabia died on Thursday, a 68-year-old woman in Delhi who had tested positive for coronavirus passed away at the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital on Friday night. Delhi has reported seven positive cases and Uttar Pradesh 11 so far. Karnataka has six coronavirus patients while Maharashtra 31, Ladakh three and Jammu and Kashmir 2. Telangana reported three cases. Besides, Rajasthan also reported two cases. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab have reported one case each. Kerala has recorded 22 cases, including three patients who were discharged last month after they recovered from the contagious infection with flu-like symptoms. Coronavirus cases in India climb to 107, cases rise in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jun 12 () The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra on Friday crossed the one lakh-mark, a grim milestone, with the tally reaching 1,01,141 as 3,493 new patients came to light, the state health department said. The death toll rose to 3,717 with 127 new deaths being recorded. 1,718 patients were discharged after recovery during the day, taking the number of recovered patients in the state to 47,796, the health department said in a release. The worst-affected Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) accounts for 75,658 cases and 2,563 deaths. The Mumbai city alone has reported 55,451 coronavirus cases and 2,044 deaths. Of the 127 deaths recorded on Friday, 50 deaths occurred in the last two days while the rest took place between May 20 to June nine. The release said that out of 127 deaths, 106 were reported in MMR including 90 in Mumbai alone. So far 6,24, 977 people have been tested for coronavirus in the state, the statement added. 5,79,569 people are in home quarantine and 28,200 are in institutional quarantine. There are 75,067 hospital beds available in 1,553 institutional quarantine facilities. The state's mortality rate is 3.7 percent and the recovery rate is 47.3 percent, said the health department. Among other hotspots, Malegaon city has reported 865 cases and 65 deaths, Jalgaon district 1,197 cases and 105 deaths while Jalgaon city has reported 347 cases and 15 deaths. Pune city has reported 9,581 cases and 419 deaths, Solapur city 1,501 cases and 113 deaths, Satara 717 cases and 27 deaths, Aurangabsd city 2,351 cases and 123 deaths, Akola city 906 cases and 34 deaths, Nagpur city 903 cases and 12 deaths.
