Heavy and incessant rains wreaked havoc in Maharashtra's <keyword id="19897309" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pune" source="keywords">Pune</keyword>, where at least four persons died in <keyword id="21591568" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rain-related-incidents" source="keywords">rain-related incidents</keyword> on Thursday, while several houses and residential societies in low-lying areas in the city were inundated, following which people are being evacuated, officials said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a '<keyword id="20169545" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="red-alert" source="keywords">red alert</keyword>' for Pune district and asked people to take precautions. Schools and colleges in most parts of the district have declared a holiday in view of the heavy rainfall warning, they said. Pune city and other parts of the district, including Velha, Mulshi, Bhor talukas and the catchments areas of several dams, including Khadakwasla, have been witnessing incessant rains since Wednesday night. In the city, housing societies in the low-lying areas, such as Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner and Deccan Gymkhana, witnessed flooding and inundation and efforts have been launched by the fire brigade and disaster management cell of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to evacuate the stranded people, the officials said. Pune district collector Suhas Diwase said that in the wake of heavy rains in the Khadakwasla dam's catchment area, water has been released from the reservoir. "As the catchment areas of Khadakwasla dam has been witnessing incessant rains, water is being released at over 35,000 cusec and it will further increase to 45,000 cusec. Due to the water discharge, several low lying areas along the Mutha river witnessed inundation and flooding," he said. Four persons lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Pune, officials said. While three men died of electrocution in Deccan area of the city while trying to move their handcart, on which they used to sell egg dishes, got submerged due to heavy rains, one person died and another one sustained injuries in a landslide in Tahmini ghat section in Mulshi tehsil, district officials said. "One person died while another sustained injuries after a landslide on a small eatery in Tahmini ghat in Mulshi tehsil," inspector Manoj Yadav of Paud police station said. The district administration and local police are engaged in the task removing the debris from the road, he said adding that after removing it the road will be open for the vehicular movement. In another incident, three people are feared trapped in a bungalow in Lavasa area after mudslide, police said. Considering heavy rainfall in the 'ghat' (mountain pass) sections of Khed, Junnar, Ambegaon, Velha, Mulshi, Maval, Bhor, Haveli talukas and Pimpri Chinchwad as well as Pune city area, a holiday has been for schools. "As a precautionary measure, the disaster management cells and teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the low lying areas, where flooding and inundation is anticipated," he said. Diwase appealed not to step out of homes unless it is very important. The IMD has given a red alert for Pune district for the next 24 hours, he said. Meanwhile, 29 tourists who were stranded due to flooding at resorts and bungalows in Malavli area near Lonavala hill station in the district were evacuated on Wednesday evening, a police official said. Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar took stock of the rain situation and instructed the district authorities and the civic administration to provide all the help to the citizens.

Cloudy skies with heavy rains are going to be the norm in Mumbai at least until the coming Monday (July 15). Its neighbouring districts will also witness similar conditions. Accordingly, a yellow watch (meaning ‘be updated’) has been issued over Mumbai and Palghar, indicating chances of heavy rainfall today, with Mumbai going on orange alert (meaning ‘be prepared’) from tomorrow. Thane and Raigad are already under an orange alert due to the possibility of heavy to very heavy rains. The intense downpours are attributed to a cyclonic circulation and the monsoon trough over Maharashtra. And this is a sign of the monsoon intensifying for the state. A high tide is expected at around 4 PM today, putting authorities in Mumbai and surrounding areas on alert. Experts are closely monitoring the situation and have issued warnings for flash floods, waterlogging and road traffic to ensure public safety. But due to train tracks flooding and flights experiencing delays due to inclement weather, people travelling by these means will face inconvenience. On the bright side, daytime temperatures have dropped nearly two degrees below normal at 28.6°C, and this trend is expected to continue for the next few days. <ul><li>The National Disaster Response Force evacuated around 75,000 flood-affected people.</li><li>At least nine persons drowned on 8 August 2019 when a rescue boat capsized at Brahmnal village in Maharashtra's Sangli district. </li><li>Around 22 National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force teams are deployed in flood affected regions </li></ul> In one of its biggest rescue operations, various government agencies and the armed forces helped evacuate around 75,000 flood-affected people. This includes 66,000 people from Kolhapur and Sangli districts. More than 54,000 people were shifted from Sangli, another 12,000 were moved from Kolhapur. Also, 3,000 people from Pune and 6,000 others from Solapur, Raigad, Ratnagiri and other districts were also moved from their flood-affected homes, said the officials.

And there is a reason. The city of Mumbai is saddled with the costliest market price of this staple food—at ₹140 per kilogram (kg). This of course is for good quality onions. There is a large market for partly squashed and rotting onions as well, which is going at an exorbitant price of ₹80 a kilo. For good quality onions though, the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/commodities/news/wholesale-onion-prices-hit-rs-100/kg/articleshow/72269648.cms">wholesale price </a>itself hit a ₹100. All the other major cities too are buying onions at around ₹100 a kg as indicated in the table below. Traders, however, say that customers too have significantly reduced onion consumption.

 In the city of Hyderabad however, government owned farmer’s markets called Rythu Bazaars are selling onions ₹30 below the market rate. “But for that we have to stand in line for hours together and show Aadhar cards. Even after that, only a limited quantity of onions is given like one or two kgs,” Jaya RaviShankar, a homemaker from the city, told Business Insider. The high price of onion and garlic, which is also above ₹120 a kilo, has affected the sale of meat and meat products. The retail prices of chicken came down by ₹10 as per data collected from Navi Mumbai market in Vashi. The price of onions went up considerably after erratic rains affected crops in major onion producing states like Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. Rains have been affecting the supply and consumption of many fruits and vegetables but the rising cost of staples has been disrupting Indian home economics. Last month, tomato prices have peaked to around ₹70 per kilo. That had forced Delhi government to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/news/indian-government-is-offering-puree-as-an-alternative-to-costly-tomatoes/articleshow/71534211.cms">peddle tomato puree </a>as an alternative—especially during the festive season.
