The government in Maharashtra (the state that is home to India’s financial capital Mumbai) is getting into battle mode as the second wave of COVID-19 infections beat the record of the first wave of the pandemic that broke out last year. In his address to people of the state, Chief Minister <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> cautioned the people that there might be another lockdown, if needed. “People have become complacent,” he said. The state logged over 43,000 cases and 249 deaths in a single day on April 1. Along with his appeal for people to follow social distancing guidelines more strictly, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also assured his electorate that the administration is afraid that the health infrastructure may be stretched if the cases continue to spike at the current rate. “62% of the beds are occupied,” he said and added that the tests will be escalated to 2.5 lakh per day in the coming days, of which 70% will be RT-PCR tests. Thackeray also trained his guns on the Narendra Modi administration at the Centre. According to the Shiv Sena Chief, the state of Maharashtra has the capacity to vaccinate 600,000 people in a day but, currently, only half that number of people are getting the shots. “If the centre provides more vaccines, they can vaccinate as many as people,” he said. Over 90% of all the new COVID-19 cases (as well as the deaths) in India are coming from 11 states and union territories, as of April 1, according to government data. Maharashtra tops that list. Maharashtra Chief Minister warns of a second lockdown if the COVID-19 situation doesn’t improve in next two days

New Delhi, Apr 3 () Mumbai-based Hiranandani group has donated Rs 5 crore to Maharashtra Chief Minister's Relief Fund to tackle the coronavirus crisis. DLF group CSR arm DLF Foundation has donated Rs 5 crore to Haryana CM Relief Fund, besides pledging to provide 27 lakh meals. "Till date, cooked meals have been served to 2,80,750 persons and dry rations equivalent to 24,24,800 meals are in the process of being supplied," DLF Foundation said in a statement. It has also donated ICU ventilator, multiple diagnostic machines and hospital beds to South Delhi Municipal Corporation. FDI-funded realty firm Experion Developers on Wednesday said it has donated Rs 1.85 crore to the PM-CARES Fund. The firm has also contributed Rs 20 lakh to the Haryana Corona Relief Fund. Bengaluru-based developers including Embassy Group, Prestige group, Shriram Properties and Puravankara, are providing meals and other essential items to workers. On behalf of the association, Naredco-Uttar Pradesh President R K Arora has handed over cheque of 10 lakh to district magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar for Covid-19 pandemic relief fund. NAREDCO-UP has offered 500 beds to the state government, if required for isolation. Delhi-based Signature Global has contributed Rs 2 lakh to the PM-CARES Fund, Rs 1 lakh to CII Foundation, and Rs 7 lakh to the labourers. Supreme Court verdict on Maharashtra: Trust vote on Wednesday

India’s financial capital Mumbai is going one notch ahead to live up to its name and is in the process of creating an international financial district. 
 
This district will draw global business and will also attract them with tax-free norms and other deals. 
 <keyword id="2603637" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-chief-minister-Devendra-Fadnavis">Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis</keyword> took the charge of creating the much talked about district in Mumbai and a master plan to develop the area is underway. 
 Discussions have been already held with <keyword id="6391015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Minister-Arun-Jaitley">finance minister Arun Jaitley</keyword> and the Reserve Bank of India. 
 
The master plan, which is being prepared by a committee headed by Jayant Sinha, is being developed on the lines of financial centre in Gujarat with some necessary changes. 
 
"Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai have prospered because many Indians prefer to set up their companies there instead of setting up here because of taxation issues. What we are going to do is simply remove those tax hindrances,” said Poonam Mahajan, deputy chairperson of the committee. 
 
The proposed international district will come up on 60 acres of land.

	SAFAR is a monitoring and forecast system conceived to provide three days weather information with health advisories, levels of Ultra-Violet radiation and pollution among others, reported PTI. 
 The system was developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, in association with Regional Meteorological Center Mumbai-India Metrological Department, and the <keyword id="48285" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Municipal-Corporation">Municipal Corporation</keyword> of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). 

	Speaking on the occasion, Vardhan praised the Met department whose weather forecasts for farmers and fishermen, he said, have contributed towards the economic development of the country to the tune of Rs 32,000 crore. 
 

	He said the Met department is technically qualified and equipped to make weather forecasts. “There is a lot of misunderstanding in the public about this. The department is doing a very good job," Vardhan told PTI.

Union Environment and <keyword id="136545" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Forest-minister">Forest Minister</keyword> <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> granted environment clearance for the ambitious 35-km-long coastal road project between Nariman Point and Kandivali in Mumbai. 
 It was announced by <keyword id="26806" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maharashtra-Chief-Minister">Maharashtra Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6355042" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Devendra-Fadnavis">Devendra Fadnavis</keyword> today, according to a PTI report. 
	 

	"Thank you @PrakashJavdekarjee for approving coastal road for Mumbai. It's a dream come true. Best gift to Mumbai by Modiji's Govt," Fadnavis tweeted after meeting Javadekar in Delhi this morning. 
	 

	"Coastal road will decongest the traffic of Mumbai and will create 91 hectares of green spaces. Taking Mumbai infra to next standard. Earlier govt. was talking about coastal road for 5yrs. I'd promised Mumbai that will get it approved in 5 months," he said. 
	 

	"Happy it took even lesser time. Timeline of Mumbai coastal road clearance. Draft Notification by 15th June. Final notification by 15th August," the chief minister said in series of tweets. The <keyword id="6356172" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> signed a Memorandum of Understanding on June 6 with the government of the <keyword id="44173" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Netherlands">Netherlands</keyword> to obtain technical advice on feasibility of building metro track along the proposed coastal road connecting north and south Mumbai.

Boost for Mumbai infrastructure, Centre clears coastal road project

Forget the metro or the latest speed giants roaring across Indian roads. Come Saturday (February 1) and India’s financial capital will be rolling out the country’s first-ever <keyword id="64918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monorail">monorail</keyword>, connecting the central suburb of <keyword id="157686" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wadala">Wadala</keyword> to <keyword id="6366202" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chembur">Chembur</keyword> on the eastern outskirts of Mumbai and covering a distance of 8.93 km across seven stations in about 21 minutes. Currently, it takes around 40 minutes to cover this stretch. 
 <keyword id="81878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-monorail">Mumbai monorail</keyword> will be formally inaugurated by <keyword id="26806" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maharashtra-Chief-Minister">Maharashtra Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6356262" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prithviraj-Chavan">Prithviraj Chavan</keyword> on Saturday afternoon and the commute will be open for the masses from Sunday onwards. The two-phase project costs around Rs 3,000 crore and the second phase linking Wadala to <keyword id="2039948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sant-Gadge-Maharaj-Chowk">Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk</keyword> (popularly known as <keyword id="2039952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saath-Rasta">Saath Rasta</keyword> and originally called <keyword id="2039957" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jacobs-Circle">Jacob’s Circle</keyword>) in south Mumbai will be operational within a year. 
 As of now, tickets are priced between Rs 5 and Rs 11 and a <keyword id="359126" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="smart-card-system">smart card system</keyword> is already in place, but there will be no <keyword id="2039963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Season-pass">season pass</keyword>. The seven stations on the Phase-I route include Chembur, <keyword id="2039964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VN-Purav/RC-Marg-Junction">VN Purav/RC Marg Junction</keyword>, <keyword id="2039965" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fertilizer-Township">Fertilizer Township</keyword>, <keyword id="75662" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharat-Petroleum">Bharat Petroleum</keyword>, <keyword id="1351055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mysore-Colony">Mysore Colony</keyword>, <keyword id="683956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhakti-Park">Bhakti Park</keyword> and <keyword id="6537145" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wadala-Depot">Wadala Depot</keyword>. When the entire corridor starts working, tickets will cost Rs 5-19, across a total of 19 stations. 
 The monorail project has been executed by engineering major <keyword id="45475" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> and Malaysian firm <keyword id="1563400" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Scomi-Engineering">Scomi Engineering</keyword>. It is owned and operated by <keyword id="64095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-Metropolitan-Region-Development-Authority">Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority</keyword> (<keyword id="48470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MMRDA">MMRDA</keyword>), which has already spent Rs 1,900 crore on both the phases. The civil work on the second phase has been completed as well. 
 Construction for the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle (Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk) route – a total distance of 19.17 km – started back in 2009 and was scheduled to be completed in April 2011. But the project got delayed for more than 2.5 years and only the <keyword id="2039976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wadala-Chembur">Wadala-Chembur</keyword> section could be completed in the first phase. With the entire stretch becoming operational, it will be the <keyword id="2039979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Worlds-second-longest-monorail">world’s second longest monorail</keyword> corridor, after <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword>’s Osaka Monorail (23.8 km). Apart from Japan, other countries running monorails include <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, <keyword id="8695" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Malaysia">Malaysia</keyword>, the <keyword id="6354458" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="US">US</keyword>, <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> and <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword>. 
 
Mumbai monorail is going to be a colourful affair, flaunting green, pink and blue. It will be able to peak to 80 km/hour while the average speed has been set at 65 km/hour. Initially, six trains will run from 7 in the morning till 3 in the afternoon. But from March onwards, it will function 19 hours a day and the train frequency will improve as well – from 15 minutes to nine and finally to three-four minutes. As of now, each train has 4 air-conditioned coaches and can carry as many as 560 passengers. After the second phase is commissioned, there will be 10 more trains with six coaches each and a total of 19 stations. 
 But will the monorail be an essential part of our daily commute once the novelty wears off? It is bound to bring some much-needed relief to Mumbaikars, struggling to cope with traffic snarls on a daily basis. But to make the good work really effective, the second phase should be completed at the earliest. One also wonders if the authorities will consider starting a <keyword id="2039974" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Second-monorail-project">second monorail project</keyword> in and around Mumbai as was originally planned. Experts feel that the need for an expanded monorail corridor may arise after all the proposed metro rail routes are commissioned and there is further requirement for a seamless <keyword id="457467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="feeder-service">feeder service</keyword>. And when that happens, the people of Mumbai are bound to have a completely hassle-free commute.

The Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning on Thursday (October 10) to honour the late <keyword id="19981455" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ratan-Tata" source="keywords">Ratan Tata</keyword>, a towering figure in Indian industry, who passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 86. Tata, celebrated for leading the <keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Group" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tata Group">Tata Group</keyword> to international acclaim, died at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai following a brief illness. In the early hours of Thursday morning, his remains were transported from the hospital to his Colaba residence, accompanied by a police escort. Several prominent figures, including Maharashtra Chief Minister <keyword id="19913631" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eknath-Shinde" source="keywords">Eknath Shinde</keyword>, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, and industrialist Mukesh Ambani, visited the hospital upon learning of his passing. The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that, as a mark of respect, the state flag would be flown at half-mast on Thursday, and all entertainment activities would be paused for the day. The public will have the opportunity to pay their respects to Ratan Tata at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai, where his body will lie in state from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Tata’s final rites are scheduled to be performed later on Thursday in Worli. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced late Wednesday night that Ratan Tata will be accorded a state funeral. In a post on X, CM Shinde described Tata as a “unique blend of morality and entrepreneurship” and hailed him as a living legend who successfully led the Tata Group, a conglomerate with a 150-year legacy. “Ratan ji Tata’s mortal remains will be accorded a state funeral,” Shinde said as per a PTI report. Praising Tata’s legacy, Shinde said that the industrialist will remain a source of inspiration for future generations of entrepreneurs. He also recalled Tata’s unwavering strength during the 26/11 terror attacks, when the Tata Group’s Taj Hotel in Colaba was one of the primary targets of the 2008 tragedy. “His resoluteness during the 26/11 terror attack will always be remembered,” the Chief Minister added. Tata, born on 28 December 1937 in Mumbai, was the driving force behind the growth of the Tata Group from 1991 until his retirement in 2012. Under the project, tunnelling works have been fully completed, while 77.6% of overall systems work, depot civil works 99.8% and mainline track works have been completed almost 87% The introduction of the metro transportation system has witnessed a significant response in the city as the daily ridership of the Mumbai Metro has witnessed a significant increase. On July 24, 2023, the ridership reached 2,12,490, followed by 2,18,635 on July 25, 2023. The highest recorded ridership was on July 26, 2023, with 2,22,290 passengers. This surge in ridership has been observed specifically on the Metro 2A and 7 lines, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation said in a release.

He said that provisions like free education to girl students for engineering, pharmacy, and medical education along with degree and diploma courses along with Rs. 1500 per month to every woman prove that the government has expressed its responsibility towards women of the state. Stating that the budget proves that it stands behind the farmers, Chief Minister Shinde said that the issue of food-grain storage would be resolved through schemes like Godown per village. He said that the lives of farmers would be transformed through various provisions in the budget which include financial assistance to cotton and soybean growers, special campaigns to complete irrigation projects, and solar pumps on demand.
