Another party MP said Shinde was asked whether he know about the sudden developments in the NCP to which he responded in the affirmative. The MP said the political developments took place at a rapid pace due to which Sena lawmakers could not be informed about them in advance. The chief minister stressed the Ajit Pawar-led NCP group joining the ruling alliance will only help the party lawmakers, the MP added. College dropout, auto driver, ‘original Sainik’  — Ekanth Shinde’s rocky ride to CM’s seat

Even as stunned relatives slammed the civic authorities, NMC Municipal Commissioner Kailash Jadhav ordered a probe into the incident and assured action against all found guilty of lapses. 11 patients die on ventilator beds due to oxygen leak in a hospital in Nashik

Places of <keyword id="968622" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="religious-worship">religious worship</keyword> in Maharashtra, which were shut since the imposition of <keyword id="8925953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-lockdown">COVID-19 lockdown</keyword> in March, reopened on Monday with devotees visiting some of the prominent temples and shrines in the state. The reopening of the places of worship coincided with the <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> 'Padwa', which is an important festival in the state. Early in the morning, devotees were seen visiting Lord Vitthal's temple at Pandharpur in Satara, Saibaba's shrine in Shirdi, Goddess Tulja Bhavani's temple in Osmanabad and the famous Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai. The Siddhivinayak temple's chairman Aadesh Bandekar on Sunday said only 1,000 devotees will be allowed inside the temple every day in staggered time slots to be booked through a mobile phone application. As per the standard operating procedures (SOPs) released by the state government, religious places located out of COVID-19 containment zones have been allowed to reopen as per the timings decided by authorities, and devotees will be allowed inside in a staggered manner. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced reopening of the places of worship, but also cautioned people, saying it cannot be forgotten that the "demon of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>" still persists and called for following discipline. The opposition BJP in the state had been seeking reopening of the places of worship and earlier questioned the <keyword id="10279635" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="thackeray-governments-decision">Thackeray governments decision</keyword> to not reopen temples at a time when bars were allowed to reopen. The chief minister, however, had defended his decision saying it was difficult to follow physical distancing at the places of worship. The issue had also led to a stand-off between Thackeray and state Governor B S Koshyari, who reminded the Shiv Sena president of his Hindutva credentials and asked if he had turned secular. Koshyari's letter to the chief minister was criticised by constituents of the <keyword id="8357634" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="maha-vikas-aghadi">Maha Vikas Aghadi</keyword> government. Thackeray had said that after places of worship are reopened, rules and safety protocols have to be followed strictly, and laid stress on wearing masks. "If we follow discipline, we will get God's blessings," Thackeray had said. According to the SOPs laid down by the government, only asymptomatic people will be allowed inside places of worship and wearing of face mask is mandatory for devotees. The number of people to be allowed inside such places in a particular time slot will be decided on the size of the structure and ventilation. Devotees will have to maintain social distancing, while management of such places will have to conduct thermal scanning and make available hand wash or sanitisers, according to the SOPs. Local authorities can further add any directions to these guidelines taking into consideration local conditions. Footwear should be preferably taken off inside vehicles, the guidelines said. Touching of statues, holy books, idols is not allowed and large gatherings continue to remain prohibited. In view of the potential threat of spread of the coronavirus infection, only recorded devotional music should be played, and choir or singing groups are not allowed, as per the SOPs. Among other guidelines, common prayer mats should be avoided and devotees should bring their own prayer mats or pieces of cloth, which they can take back with them. Physical offering of 'prasad', distribution or sprinkling of holy water is not allowed. Floors at places of worship should be cleaned multiple times in a day, and community kitchens and 'langars' should follow physical distancing, the guidelines said. Effective sanitisation of the premises should be done with a particular focus on lavatories, and hand and foot washing stations. Places of worship reopen in Maharashtra with strict Covid-19 protocols in place

In a huge relief for the people, the Maharashtra government on Monday announced a slash in the tariffs for the basic Covid-19 tests in <keyword id="1349548" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-labs">private labs</keyword> to just Rs 980. This is the fourth time in the past eight months that the state has cut the test rates for private testing, starting from the original rate of Rs 4,500 to now only Rs 980. "While Rs 980 will be the cost leviable by pathological laboratories, for tests conducted through the labs at <keyword id="9132483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-centres">Covid-19 centres</keyword>, hospitals and quarantine centres, where a large number of samples are collected and tested daily, the effective rate will be Rs 1,400. However, all these tests shall continue to be offered free at all government hospitals, he reiterated. However, the minister - who is among ministers from six states who have moved the apex court for a review of its earlier order - said Maharashtra had never asked for cancelling the examinations, but only sought to defer them till a more opportune time. In their review petition, the ministers from various non-BJP ruled states - Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Punjab - plan to raise several issues that may impede the smooth and safe conduct of the JEE, NEET exams, scheduled for September 30. Maharashtra government stays contentious order implementing new farm laws

Thane, Jul 8 () The incident of gross mismanagement at a civic-run COVID-19 facility here in Maharashtra has taken a political turn with the opposition BJP on Wednesday accusing the Maha Vikas Aghadi government of being insensitive towards plight of the common people amid the COVID-19 crisis. BJP leaders Kirit Somaiya and Thane city unit chief Niranjan Davkhare have slammed district guardian minister Eknath Shinde (Shiv Sena) and his cabinet colleague Jitendra Awhad (NCP) for not visiting the kin of the deceased COVID-19 patients who suffered an emotional trauma due to the goof-up on part of the hospital. Somaiya demanded registration of a criminal case for negligence against the hospital management in view of the incident. The matter came to light when the family of a 72- year-old patient filed a complaint with the police stating that the man had gone missing from Global Hub Covid Hospital, where he was shifted for treatment on June 29. Investigations revealed that the body of the septuagenarian, who had 'disappeared' from the hospital on July 5, was handed over to the family of another COVID-19 patient who was very much alive at the time, an official had said. "A probe by a civic team set up on Tuesday found that the kin of this family in Kopri is alive and under treatment at a COVID facility. The hospital has said the goof-up was a result of case papers of the two patients getting mixed up," the official said. The family which received the body in a sealed bag cremated it. Another family which was informed that their kin, a 67-year-old, was alive in the hospital. However, the patient died of the infection late on Tuesday night, a senior civic official had said. The plea challenging the Governor's direction was mentioned before a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala who took note of submissions of senior advocate A M Singhvi that an urgent hearing was needed and is scheduled to hear the matter at 5 pm. The petition contended that Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari vide communication dated June 28, 2022 (which was received today i.e., on June 29 at about 9:00 am) has decided to hold a floor test in complete defiance of the fact that this court is seized of the issue of the disqualification proceedings. "Such undue haste is manifestly arbitrary and therefore violative of Article 14," said the plea and sought directions seeking setting aside of the impugned communication sent by the Governor to the Chief Minister as well as to the secretary of the Assembly. "It is submitted that this Court is considering the validity of the disqualification proceedings and has kept the matter for hearing on July 11, 2022. The issue of disqualification is directly connected/interlinked with the issue of floor tests. "It is submitted that the impugned communications are entirely based on media reports with no concrete material whatsoever. None of the 39 MLAs, it appears, have individually or collectively written to the Hon'ble Governor about their decision to withdraw support from the MVA-led government," the plea said. Prabhu submitted in his plea that the impugned directions ought not to have been issued without the aid and advice of the council of the ministers led by the Chief Minister. "It is surprising that the leader of the opposition admittedly meets the Governor at 10:00 pm on June 28, 2022, and the impugned communications are also of the same date. This only shows the undue haste with which the Hon'ble Governor has acted without even asking the CM for his views in respect of the political scenario in the State. "The impugned directions, it seems, have been issued on the 'aid and advice of the leader of the opposition, which is clearly not contemplated under the constitution," the plea said. The petition stated that there is absolutely no ground or material to call for an urgent floor test on June 30, 2022, when this court is already seized of parallel proceedings and wherein constitutional issues are to be decided. "The Governor with little or scant respect to the sanctity and dignity of this court has proceeded to go ahead and order a floor test in a clear attempt to shield the MLAs from the punishment entailed on account of the constitutional sin of defection. "The floor test, no doubt, is a constitutional mandate to ascertain who has the majority as our democracy is founded on the rule of the majority. An equally concomitant consideration and constitutional imperative in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution which prescribes and outlines who can be entitled to vote or be a part of the Assembly," the plea said. Prabhu contended that the respondents in the disqualification petitions have already lost their membership on the day they voluntarily gave up their membership from Shiv Sena. "The disqualification proceedings under the Tenth Schedule are only a formal adjudication of this fact or otherwise of disqualification. The order of the Speaker/Deputy Speaker is an ex post facto recognition of the event of disqualification which had occurred at an anterior point of time," it said. Koshyari has asked the Maharashtra Legislature Secretary to hold a floor test of the <keyword id="8400868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MVA-government" source="Orion">MVA government</keyword> at 11 am on Thursday.
