<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Nestle India</a> has not fully come out of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Maggi ban</a> effect and yet another claim has surfaced. 
 
The Uttar Pradesh district authority claimed that fresh <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nestle-chief-working-to-restore-companys-image-after-Maggi-ban/articleshow/47813250.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Maggi samples</a> were sub-standard. 
 
A <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=food+authority" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">district food safety official</a> has reportedly said that samples of <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>’s Maggi noodles collected from Barabanki district in February were found sub-standard and contained more ash content. 
 
The official claimed that tests conducted by a Lucknow-based state-owned lab found ash content in Maggi Masala to be 1.85 per cent, which is higher than the permissible limit of 1 per cent. 
 
However, Nestle has dismissed such claims. 
 
“Maggi noodles is 100 per cent safe for consumption. It is apparent from media reports that standards for 'macaroni products' are being applied for 'instant noodles with seasoning' which is erroneous and misleading,” said the company in a statement. 
 
"We categorically reiterate that testing of instant noodles against norms set for macaroni products will reflect in incorrect results and wrong interpretations. The quality and safety of our products are non-negotiable priorities for us," Nestle said in the statement.

Maggi is in trouble again

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is testing <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> samples collected from various states after Uttar Pradesh’s food authority found Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and access lead in the two-minute noodles. 
 
The Indian Government said the reports will be out within next three days and if the reports turn out to be negative, brand ambassadors of Maggi would be liable for action in case advertisements are found to be misleading. 
 
Additional Secretary, Consumer Affairs, G Gurucharan said that FSSAI had taken samples from all states. “Testings are being done. Some reports are expected today and within 2-3 days we will get complete reports,” he said. 
 
He added that in case of any violation, FSSAI would initiate action. 
 
"FSSAI has taken up the case, it will take action. We have already written to the FSSAI," said Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan. 
Paswan also said that no complaints from consumers were received yet. 
 
Last week a case was registered against Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, asking her to explain the nutritional value in Maggi. 
 
A huge furore broke out on April 30 when the food authorities in Lucknow asked Nestle to recall one batch of Maggi noodles after tests showed it contained seven times higher levels of lead than permissible and traces of Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and high amounts of lead, more than the permissible limits that could cause harm to organs in our body. 
 
Nestle defended it saying, the batch was manufactured in February 2014 and had reached the best-before date in November. One batch contains about 200,000 packs. As per a news report in The Economic Times the company has said its practice is to collect stock near the expiry date from distributors and retailers. 
 
The company told the ET, it doesn't add MSG to Maggi noodles sold in India and this is stated on the product. "However, we use hydrolysed groundnut protein, onion powder and wheat flour to make Maggi noodles sold in India, which all contain glutamate. We believe that the authorities' tests may have detected glutamate, which occurs naturally in many foods," the company said.

Stars may face action if Maggi samples tested negative

After receiving a clean chit in food safety from 4 states of India, Maggi’s fate in Puducherry still hangs in balance until lab confirmation test is received. As per a PTI news report, <keyword id="6371694" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Puducherry-Government">Puducherry government</keyword> has said that the samples have been sent for lab tests and follow up action would be taken, based on the results. "Samples of Maggi noodles have been sent for tests here and to Delhi. The results of the lab tests is expected to be available by evening today and depending on the findings the government would take follow up action," <keyword id="5269" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chief-Minister">Chief Minister</keyword> N <keyword id="648732" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rangasamy">Rangasamy</keyword> told the media. <keyword id="2883352" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Director-of-Health-and-Family-Welfare-Services">Director of Health and Family Welfare Services</keyword> Dr Raman, who was also present, said nothing would be left to chance. Trouble continues to mount for Maggi; now Puducherry Government sends samples for testing

In what could be another blow to the credibility of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword>, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now testing samples of the noodle brand. According to an ET report, the company’s spokesperson confirmed the news. It should be that company had to recall its Maggie stocks from the market across India following charges of high lead and MSG content in the product. 
	 
	"We have been made aware that the FDA has taken samples of Maggi noodles manufactured in India from third-party importers' containers for testing, and we have asked the importers to advise us of the outcome of the FDA tests," the spokeswoman said in an emailed statement in the report. 
	 
	It should be noted that Nestle does not import, market or distribute Maggie in the US market directly and the product is available through third party. 
	 
	Nestle has now moved to the Bombay High Court to defend Maggie against the order from Indian Food and Drug Administration.

The statement came as the Supreme Court gave greenlight to the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) to proceed with class-action suit against Nestle for allegedly selling maggi noodles that failed to meet food standards. Nestle asserts lead content in Maggi noodles is ‘below detectable limits’ following Supreme Court of India ruling to reopen class-action case

Just when India was recovering from the bitter taste of <keyword id="2894644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MaggieinSoup">#Maggieinsoup</keyword>, Indians got another health risk warning. Days after lead was found in instant food Maggi, an analysis, done by <keyword id="178996" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Metropolis-Healthcare">Metropolis Healthcare</keyword>, of blood samples collected over a period of one year from across the country has revealed that over 23 per cent of the total samples tested positive with <keyword id="520366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="lead-poisoning">lead poisoning</keyword>. 
 
 "A pan-India analysis of 733 blood samples collected over last one year has revealed that 23.47 per cent (172 samples) of the total samples tested positive with Lead poisoning," Dr Sandeep Warghade, Consulting Pathologist Metropolis Healthcare told PTI. He added that lead poisoning can be hard to detect and even people <keyword id="6366244" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="WHO">who</keyword> look healthy can have high levels of lead. 
 
 
"At high levels of exposure, lead damages the brain and central nervous system and can lead to coma, convulsions and even death. Signs and symptoms of lead poisoning usually don't appear until dangerous amounts have accumulated," Warghade added. 
 
 
According to a WHO study, lead exposure is estimated to account for 1,43,000 deaths per year with the highest burden in developing regions. 
Lead poisoning is a cumulative toxicant, particularly harmful to young children and can affect multiple body systems, he said. Major sources of blood lead include leaded contaminated soil, drinking water, petrol emissions, household dust, battery recycling, silver refining, paints (especially yellow), pigments, printing presses, ceramic pottery glazes, cosmetics, colours (including vermilion, spices, Holi colours), crayons and painted pencils, plant foods. In growing children, it causes low IQ, hyperactivity, attention deficit, learning disabilities and anaemia, he said. 
 
 
Warghade cautioned that lead poisoning cases in young children are high as they tend to lick or eat lead-containing paint when it peels off the walls or while playing with toys. 
 
 
Lead from a mother's blood can pass to the foetus during pregnancy, possibly giving rise to genetic disorders. 
 
 
"Exposure of pregnant women to high levels of lead can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and low birth weight, as well as minor malformations. Women with high blood lead levels develop early osteoporosis, lower backache, joint pain and persistent anaemia," he said.

More bad news for Maggi? 23% blood samples tested positive for lead poisoning

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a> has sent fresh samples of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> for testing as it resumed production of Maggi recently. This means the instant 2-minute noodles will be back on sale December onwards. 
 The Bombay High Court recently had directed <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to also get fresh samples of Maggi noodles tested by the labs and once they get the approval, Maggi will be back with new packaging, instructions and old taste. 
 
Production of Maggi noodles has, reportedly, resumed in Karnataka, Punjab and Goa. 
 
Maggi noodles was banned in India in June after MSG and excess content of lead was found in the packets. 
 
This dented the image and revenue sales of Nestle India as Maggi used to be its biggest brand, accounting for about 30% of sales at the company. 
 
However, it is expected that Nestle India’s Maggi will recover the losses. The company has started rigorous advertising for Maggi's return. 
 
Edelweiss in a note stated "We appreciate the company's effort to up the ante on advertising and promotions, but this will depress margins in the coming quarters. We believe Nestle is unlikely to garner the earlier 70% share of the noodle pie.”

Maggi will be back in December!

Here’s some good news for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi</a> lovers. The instant noodles cleared all tests from laboratories mandated by the Bombay High Court. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a>, in a statement said, “All the 90 samples, covering 6 variants, tested by these laboratories are clear with lead much below the permissible limits.” 
 
It said that the company will start manufacturing and will start selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories.

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">FSSAI</a> had banned sale of Maggi noodles in India, saying it contained excessive lead levels and MSG. 
 
When Maggi was recalled, it cost Nestle Rs 320 crore and another Rs 1,270 crore in brand loss according to global valuation consultancy Brand Finance.

Maggi is COMING BACK!

Despite finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> safe after testing, the officials have refused to give it a clean chit. 
 
Samples of two-minute Maggi noodles from Goa were sent to a government-run laboratory in Karnataka for re-analysis and it was found that the instant noodles were safe for consumption. 
 
However, Director of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Salim Veljee, refused to give a clean chit. 
 
He said the negative result did not necessarily mean a clean chit for the company's product because of contrary findings made by other state and central government laboratories while testing the Nestle-manufactured noodles, which have been banned in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=goa">Goa</a> as well as across the country. 
 
"The samples of these noodles were subjected for a re-analysis of the said five Maggi noodle products at the Goa State Pollution Control Board laboratory at Patto, Panaji and the results of the analysis were found to be consistent with the findings of the Goa FDA Lab in declaring the lead contents to be below the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm and negative for MSG," Veljee told reporters. 
 
Goa had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">banned sale of Maggi</a> in June 8 and several tonnes of Maggi noodles were destroyed after tests in state-run laboratories across India revealed that the popular snack had excess amounts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSG">MSG</a> and presence of lead. 
 
On the instructions of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI)</a>, which described the tests conducted in Goa as not up to the mark, new Maggi noodles samples were then sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru, Karnataka for another round of tests, which have only now confirmed the Goa FDA's results. 
 
Veljee added that the CFTRI reports re-confirmed the consistent analytical results findings of the State FDA Goa laboratory, in which all the said five samples of Nestle's Maggie conformed with the Food Safety and Standards Rules/Regulation 2011. 
 
Lead in all the five samples was "reported to be well below the permissible limit as well as negative for the MSG in the said samples, which analysis was performed separately on the noodles and taste maker", he added.

Maggi is safe to eat but no clean chit yet

Nestle India has announced the brand is set to lose a whopping Rs. 320 Crores plus from the destruction of its instant noodles. 
 
The brand has been combating the worst-ever brand crisis in the history of India since Maggi samples were found to contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) and excess lead. 
 
The company has challenged the charges against it in court but is forced to withdraw until a resolution is reached. 
 
Nestle said the approximate value of its stocks is around Rs. 210 Crores. The company also has ready stocks of Maggi and related products in its factories and distribution centers that is worth around Rs. 110 Crores. 
 
Nestle withdrew Maggi noodles off the shelves on June 5. The company says its noodles are safe and that FSSAI’s testing facility is faulty.

Nestle India to lose more than Rs. 320 Crores from
Maggi crisis

In a major relief of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a>, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bombay+high+court">Bombay High Court</a> today gave conditional relief to the Swiss company and lifted ban of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">Maggi noodles</a>. 
 
The court questioned the authority of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">FSSAI</a> in banning Maggi and asked it to justify the ban, while ordering fresh tests to be conducted on the noodles. 
 
Three labs have been asked to test samples of Maggi noodles within six weeks and as per the court. Nestle can start manufacturing Maggi if tests find lead within permissible limits. 
 
Meanwhile, the US health regulator USFDA said its tests have found the lead level in the popular instant food within acceptable levels for US consumers. 
 
In an e-mail statement, a USFDA spokesperson said that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FDA">FDA</a> tested a limited number of samples for lead contamination and did not find any levels that present a public health concern for US consumers, putting rumours to rest. 
 
Recently, the government asked Nestle to pay damages of Rs 640 crore for selling "defective and hazardous" Maggi noodles.

Ban on Maggi lifted temporarily. Conditions apply

Singapore food authorities, after conducting safety tests, concluded that <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> did not pose any health risk and have allowed sale of the instant noodles manufactured in India. 
 
The Straits Times reported that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) informed local importers that sale of the brand's noodles from India may be resumed. 
 
Last week, AVA had advised importers to withhold sales of Maggi while it conducted laboratory tests, in the backdrop of food scare in India that it contained higher-than-permissible levels of lead. 
 
The news report stated that results from AVA's laboratory tests, which cover "a wide range of hazards associated with food" showed that the India-made Maggi noodles met local food safety standards. 
 
Maggi noodles produced in other countries were also tested and results showed that they also met the food safety requirements. 
 
Food products that fail tests will not be allowed for sale, the AVA had earlier said. 
 
Singapore has imported "a small amount" of the brand's noodles manufactured in India. 
 
India has banned the sale of the Maggi instant noodles after MSG and excess levels of lead were found in samples tested in New Delhi and in Uttar Pradesh. However, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> claimed that Maggi was safe and the instant noodles were taken-off shelves as faith of consumers had shaken.

India-made Maggi is perfectly safe in Singapore

Gujarat Government has today banned the sale of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s instant noodle brand 'Maggi' for a month in the state after the product failed the food safety test, asking the company to withdraw all its stock of <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword> from the state. 
 Apart from Maggi, the state government also tested one sample each of instant <keyword id="60202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Noodles">noodles</keyword> of <keyword id="17095" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunfeast">Sunfeast</keyword> and S K Foods and has banned the latter for a month as high lead content of 4 PPM was found in it. 
 
"Twenty seven samples collected from different parts of the state were tested by Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration. The test has shown that lead was present above the prescribed limit while Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) was also present," Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel told PTI. 
 
Of the 27 samples, lead content in 14 of them was found to be 2.8 PPM to 5 PPM (particle per million), which is above the prescribed limit of 2.5 PPM. Presence of excess lead is harmful for health, he said. 
 
"Monosodium glutamate, which should not be present in the product, was found in all the samples tested. For these reasons, the government has banned the sale and distribution of Maggi noodles for one month in the state. The government has also informed Nestle to withdraw all its Maggi stock from Gujarat," Patel said. 
 
He said the health department will conduct inspections across the state to enforce the ban and action will be taken against those selling the product in any part of the state. 
 
"Sample of Sunfeast passed the lead test, but traces of monosodium glutamate were found in it. We will test more samples of Sunfeast before taking any action on its instant noodle," he said.

Asking the retailers not to panic, Maggi has been putting up logics to defend its move, a news report by The Economic Times has claimed. 
 
 “The order to recall the Maggi batch is for February 2014, which anyway would have got expired in November 2014," <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> wrote to retailers. In an email response to the ET, a Nestle India <keyword id="6357308" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="spokesperson">spokesperson</keyword> said, "Some recent reports in the media about Maggi noodles are confusing people and we are working to clear the confusion as soon as possible. We are confident of our product and are sharing this confidence with our consumers and trade. It is too early to assess any impact on sales." However, insiders’ report to the financial daily has shown a significant drop in the sales of Maggi ranging from 10-40% since last week.  The brand accounts for close to 30% of Nestle's sales in the country. National food regulator <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> (FSSAI) has initiated sample tests of Maggi noodles across other parts of the country, including <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> and Mumbai and Nagpur. 
 Defending its flagship brand strongly, Nestle said Maggi noodles comply with applicable food and safety laws as well as the company's own standards of quality and safety before they reach consumers. Its <keyword id="122238" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spokesman">spokesman</keyword> said Nestle has made a representation to the Uttar Pradesh authorities and has submitted large number of product samples to an independent accredited laboratory to independently evaluate the product. 
 
"We will share the initial results soon and will continue to update as new results are received," the spokesperson told ET. In its communication to retailers, Nestle urged them not to be defensive if any customer talks about the controversy. "Nestle is a big enough company and will come clean out of it. Please don't get into any sort of communication or opinion without legal guidance," it said. 
 Industry experts, however, say the controversy could have a severe long-term impact on brand trust. "In a case of this magnitude, both parties should make their reports public. In case the authorities have <keyword id="6370579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="proof">proof</keyword> that the product in the market is tainted and unsafe, then they will likely initiate a public recall and initiate a probe in the matter," said <keyword id="2867937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashwin-Bhadri">Ashwin Bhadri</keyword>, <keyword id="2867416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-auditor">food auditor</keyword> and business relations head at <keyword id="1459500" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Equinox-Labs">Equinox Labs</keyword>, which works closely with the FSSAI, on compliance issues.

Maggi is in a soup. But it won’t give up without a fight

Weeks after India banned <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword> and ordered its manufacturer to pull thousands of packets from stores, the UK's <keyword id="33543" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-Standards-Agency">Food Standards Agency</keyword> (FSA) has found the product imported from India safe for consumption; says it does not contain excess of <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword>. The food agency conducted tests on various samples as a precaution following a ban on the <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> product in India, reported the Economic Times. 

	"The FSA can confirm that results from testing samples of Maggi Noodles in the UK have all found that levels of lead in the product is well within EU permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers," the financial daily reported, quoting FSA on its website. 
 Sale of Maggi noodles were banned in India after the Food Safety and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> found lead beyond permissible limits and cases of mislabeling of monosodium glutamate content on the packet. Meanwhile, Nestle informed the FSA that the only variety of Maggi Noodles imported into the UK from India was the 'masala flavour'. The FSA tested several flavours from the Maggi noodles range including the masala flavor and found the levels of lead to be well within <keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword>'s permissible levels. It tested samples collected from Nestle, local and port authorities of the UK. <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is also preparing a blueprint for a possible re-launch of the Maggi instant noodles. Experts feel the issue of the recall and ban on the noodles might be resolved in the next three to six months. The <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> recently allowed Nestle India to export Maggi noodles but did not lift the ban on its local sales. 

	A Nestle India spokesperson told ET: "We note that the UK Food Standards Agency cleared Maggi noodles after reviewing results from around 900 samples." 
 Its finding that "levels of lead in the product is well within EU permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers comes after regulatory authorities in other countries including Singapore, Australia and <keyword id="22501" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-Zealand">New Zealand</keyword> also cleared the product", the spokesperson said.
