<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a> has sent fresh samples of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> for testing as it resumed production of Maggi recently. This means the instant 2-minute noodles will be back on sale December onwards. 
 The Bombay High Court recently had directed <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to also get fresh samples of Maggi noodles tested by the labs and once they get the approval, Maggi will be back with new packaging, instructions and old taste. 
 
Production of Maggi noodles has, reportedly, resumed in Karnataka, Punjab and Goa. 
 
Maggi noodles was banned in India in June after MSG and excess content of lead was found in the packets. 
 
This dented the image and revenue sales of Nestle India as Maggi used to be its biggest brand, accounting for about 30% of sales at the company. 
 
However, it is expected that Nestle India’s Maggi will recover the losses. The company has started rigorous advertising for Maggi's return. 
 
Edelweiss in a note stated "We appreciate the company's effort to up the ante on advertising and promotions, but this will depress margins in the coming quarters. We believe Nestle is unlikely to garner the earlier 70% share of the noodle pie.”

Maggi will be back in December!

There has been a huge public outcry about how Maggi was allowed to advertise as a ‘healthy’ food alternative. Many are vexed about how authorities could let the brand duck for so long. 
 
 
 
The regulator in cases of broadcast is the Ministry for Information and Broadcasting law. That might work for censoring potentially objectionable content, but where are the ‘claims’ probed? 
 
Industry experts claim Maggi should have been advertised as a convenience food, and not a health food. The opposite led to the ensuing paradox. 
 
This is how it works. The FSSAI, FDA or Ministry of Health check the authenticity of the products advertised. In matters of broadcast, there are self-regulatory voluntary organizations like the Advertising Standards Council of India that keep an eye on the advertising industry. 
 
“We review complaints against objections raised against current advertisements, process them, and advertiser is given an opportunity to present their case. In case of technical claims, the advertiser furnishes the data which is reviewed by technical experts. The Consumer Complaints Council then arrives at a conclusion,” says Shweta Purandare, Secretary General, Advertising Standards Council of India. 
 
However, ASCI’s remit is limited to advertising content. 
 
Most believe that a slight lack of coordination between these seemingly diverse departments can spell disaster for the Indian masses. A group of experts and citizens believe the Maggi case should be made an example to deter future offenders. 
 
Devindar Sharma, Food and Trade Policy Analyst agrees, “This is definitely an indication of the poor food safety regulation in India. It’s also high time to introduce provisions in the Consumer Protection Act to penalize Celebrities and Advertising agencies for false advertising. Just because they can play around with words doesn’t mean they have the freedom to sell illusions.” 
 
Outrageous claims like six packs abs in 7 days, or 15 kg weight loss in 15 days can be sieved easily, but can finer claims by bigger brands go unnoticed in India? Only time would tell.

Can many a Maggi slip through?

Bollywood actress <keyword id="6355846" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Madhuri-Dixit">Madhuri Dixit</keyword> has landed in soup because of favourite two minute noodles-Maggi. 
 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Uttarakhand has sent a notice to Madhuri for endorsing <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword>, which is under scanner for high content of lead and Mono Sodium glutamate. 
 
The administration has asked Madhuri, 48, to reply within 15 days on an advertisement in which she talks about the nutrition value of Maggi noodles. 
 
The FDA has also asked her explain the basis of her claims in the ad. 
 
Food Security Officer Mahimanand Joshi said if she fails to respond to the notice within the stipulated time frame, a case could be registered against her. 
 
A huge furore broke out on April 30 when the food authorities in Lucknow asked Nestle to recall one batch of Maggi noodles after tests showed it contained seven times higher levels of lead than permissible and traces of Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and high amounts of lead, more than the permissible limits that could cause harm to organs in our body. 
 
Nestle defended it saying, the batch was manufactured in February 2014 and had reached the best-before date in November. One batch contains about 200,000 packs. 
 
As per a news report in The Economic Times the company has said its practice is to collect stock near the expiry date from distributors and retailers. 
 
The company told the ET, it doesn't add MSG to Maggi noodles sold in India and this is stated on the product. "However, we use hydrolysed groundnut protein, onion powder and wheat flour to make Maggi noodles sold in India, which all contain glutamate. We believe that the authorities' tests may have detected glutamate, which occurs naturally in many foods," the company said.

Madhuri Dixit is in legal trouble because of Maggi!

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi</a> is fighting its battle and now <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ITC">ITC</a> may have to prove it too. Recently, Uttar Pradesh <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=food+and+drug+authority">Food and Drug Authority</a> (FDA) claimed that it had found excess lead in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Yippee+noodles">Yippee noodles</a> manufactured by ITC and will soon file a case. 
 
The state food authority stated that samples of Yippee noodles, seized from a local mall in Aligarh, had lead "far in excess to the permissible limit". 
 Today, <keyword id="121459" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITC-Ltd">ITC Ltd</keyword> denied receiving any notice on the same, adding that Sunfeast Yippee noodles were manufactured to the highest standards of safety, hygiene and quality. 
 
The company said it did not receive any communication from the UP government regarding presence of excess lead in its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=instant+noodles">instant noodle</a> brand. 
 
“The company has not received any communication from the UP government authorities on this issue. Stories such as this can be misleading and can only help create suspicion and mistrust in the minds of the consumer. This will not only damage the brand but also severely impact industry as a whole and future investment for the economy," ITC said in a clarification to the BSE. 
 
ITC said the Yippee noodles and pasta were tested recently at NABL-accredited and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">FSSAI</a>-approved laboratories and it was found that all the samples conformed to the Food Safety Regulations. 
 
"We rigorously and regularly test our products for all parameters including heavy metals both in our in-house NABL accredited laboratory at the ITC Life Sciences and Technology Centre, Bengaluru and external NABL accredited and FSSAI approved laboratories," it added.

Dangerous levels of <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword> has been found in during routine tests on two dozen packets of instant noodles, manufactured by Nestle in India by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (<keyword id="6354656" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FDA">FDA</keyword>) in Uttar Pradesh. High levels of added monosodium glutamate (MSG), a taste enhancer was also found. 
 

	
		Two FDA officials said that they found a lead concentration of 17.2 parts per million (ppm), nearly seven times the permissible limit. 
		 
	
		Though Nestle said they do not add MSG and glutamate, Srivastava deputy inspector general of the FDA in Lucknow, said his team tested each of the two dozen packs, collected from stores across the state, separately before making the findings public. It will cost the <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> not only money, but brand value as well.

No more telling our favourite Maggie tales!

<keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>’s trouble lasts for more than ‘two minutes’ as the <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword> on Wednesday banned the sale of Maggi noodles for next 15 days amid the rising food-safety concerns. 
‘ <keyword id="6356374" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Health-Minister">Health Minister</keyword> Satyendra Jain told PTI that the <keyword id="1997297" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-government">Aam Aadmi government</keyword> in the national capital has asked Maggi producer <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> to recall all samples of the noodle brand from Delhi. 
 
According to Jain, "A fresh decision will be taken after 15 days after rechecking the new Maggi stocks in government labs." 
 
The noodles's sales have been banned across the state over reports of high lead and monosodium glutamate limit in the product. <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>, the country's largest supermarket chain operator, has also stopped sale of the Swiss multinational's famous Maggi noodles brand at all its stores across India. 
 
The move follows country-wide probe against the 'two-minute' instant food brand for alleged presence of lead and taste enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG) beyond permissible limits. 
 A <keyword id="2882279" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-Group-spokesperson">Future Group spokesperson</keyword> told PTI, "In the interest of consumer sentiment and concerns, we have taken Maggi noodles off the shelves from all our stores for the time being. We will wait for more clarity from authorities to take any further course of action." The news agency further stated that Nestle's Maggi noodle has been at the centre of a raging storm after <keyword id="506254" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UP-FDA">UP FDA</keyword> tests found higher than stipulated levels of lead and MSG in it.

​Maggi gets banned in Delhi for 15 days

In what could be another blow to the credibility of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword>, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now testing samples of the noodle brand. According to an ET report, the company’s spokesperson confirmed the news. It should be that company had to recall its Maggie stocks from the market across India following charges of high lead and MSG content in the product. 
	 
	"We have been made aware that the FDA has taken samples of Maggi noodles manufactured in India from third-party importers' containers for testing, and we have asked the importers to advise us of the outcome of the FDA tests," the spokeswoman said in an emailed statement in the report. 
	 
	It should be noted that Nestle does not import, market or distribute Maggie in the US market directly and the product is available through third party. 
	 
	Nestle has now moved to the Bombay High Court to defend Maggie against the order from Indian Food and Drug Administration.

Despite finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> safe after testing, the officials have refused to give it a clean chit. 
 
Samples of two-minute Maggi noodles from Goa were sent to a government-run laboratory in Karnataka for re-analysis and it was found that the instant noodles were safe for consumption. 
 
However, Director of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Salim Veljee, refused to give a clean chit. 
 
He said the negative result did not necessarily mean a clean chit for the company's product because of contrary findings made by other state and central government laboratories while testing the Nestle-manufactured noodles, which have been banned in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=goa">Goa</a> as well as across the country. 
 
"The samples of these noodles were subjected for a re-analysis of the said five Maggi noodle products at the Goa State Pollution Control Board laboratory at Patto, Panaji and the results of the analysis were found to be consistent with the findings of the Goa FDA Lab in declaring the lead contents to be below the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm and negative for MSG," Veljee told reporters. 
 
Goa had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">banned sale of Maggi</a> in June 8 and several tonnes of Maggi noodles were destroyed after tests in state-run laboratories across India revealed that the popular snack had excess amounts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSG">MSG</a> and presence of lead. 
 
On the instructions of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI)</a>, which described the tests conducted in Goa as not up to the mark, new Maggi noodles samples were then sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru, Karnataka for another round of tests, which have only now confirmed the Goa FDA's results. 
 
Veljee added that the CFTRI reports re-confirmed the consistent analytical results findings of the State FDA Goa laboratory, in which all the said five samples of Nestle's Maggie conformed with the Food Safety and Standards Rules/Regulation 2011. 
 
Lead in all the five samples was "reported to be well below the permissible limit as well as negative for the MSG in the said samples, which analysis was performed separately on the noodles and taste maker", he added.

Maggi is safe to eat but no clean chit yet

In a major relief of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a>, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bombay+high+court">Bombay High Court</a> today gave conditional relief to the Swiss company and lifted ban of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">Maggi noodles</a>. 
 
The court questioned the authority of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">FSSAI</a> in banning Maggi and asked it to justify the ban, while ordering fresh tests to be conducted on the noodles. 
 
Three labs have been asked to test samples of Maggi noodles within six weeks and as per the court. Nestle can start manufacturing Maggi if tests find lead within permissible limits. 
 
Meanwhile, the US health regulator USFDA said its tests have found the lead level in the popular instant food within acceptable levels for US consumers. 
 
In an e-mail statement, a USFDA spokesperson said that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FDA">FDA</a> tested a limited number of samples for lead contamination and did not find any levels that present a public health concern for US consumers, putting rumours to rest. 
 
Recently, the government asked Nestle to pay damages of Rs 640 crore for selling "defective and hazardous" Maggi noodles.

Ban on Maggi lifted temporarily. Conditions apply

The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>) along with several states banned <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> instant noodles in June, but the company did not get some of the test reports based on which authorities banned the popular noodles in the country, a company executive told the Economic Times. 

	Moreover some of the reports were not shared with Nestle before the announcement of the ban and they have now started trickling in, he added. 
 

	A company spokesperson revealed that no test reports were sent to it before June 5, 2015 when the ban was announced, except one from a Kolkata laboratory for a single sample of Maggi noodles sent by the Uttar Pradesh FDA in April. 
 

	"...and for that report, we had made our representation on the improper testing procedure," the spokesperson said in an email, responding to questions from ET. 
 

	The ban proved to be detrimental for the company. Maggi raked in over Rs 2,000 crore in annual revenue for the company. While that has stopped now, it spent Rs 320 crore to recall the product. 
 

	Global valuation consultancy Brand Finance estimates another Rs 1,270 crore in brand loss. Nestle claims it did not get a chance to explain its stand before FSSAI and state authorities that banned the product alleging excessive levels of lead in it and mislabeling on the pack. 
 

	According to industry experts, it was unfair not to share the test reports with the company before taking such an action. 
 

	Moreover, the delay in sharing results raised questions on the test procedures, since the UK, Singapore and Canada have found Maggi imported from India safe to eat. 
 "The way the matter played out was unfair to Nestle. The company wasn't given a chance to prove themselves," said <keyword id="2867937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashwin-Bhadri">Ashwin Bhadri</keyword>, chief executive at <keyword id="1459500" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Equinox-Labs">Equinox Labs</keyword>, which specialises in food testing and works closely with FSSAI on food safety compliance. 

	"Unfortunately, the issue isn't just about Maggi anymore. The controversy has had a global impact and the world is looking at India brands through the scanner,” he added. 
 

	Nestle executives raised the issue at a meeting they had with FSSAI officials on Wednesday. 
 

	An FSSAI representative present at the meeting said ideally the company should have received a letter informing it about the product not clearing the tests done and the reports of the tests should also have been shared with it. 
 

	Nestle announced that it was withdrawing Maggi noodles on June 5. But, on the same day FSSAI ordered the company to recall and stop manufacturing the product. 
 The company later approached the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> to seek clarity on the interpretation of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Foul play with Maggi? Nestle says FSSAI didn’t share test results with it

<keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>’s executives in India are probably undergoing the most stressful phase in their work life. With crisis building up, they have been victim of no leave and unsocial family life off late, all thanks to its above standard content of lead. 
 "I haven't slept for more than two hours in the past fortnight," rued a <keyword id="2891004" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="midlevel-executive">midlevel executive</keyword>. "It's been all about nonstop work, plant visits, meetings, tests, future strategies, decisions. Worse, we don't know what will happen tomorrow," he told The Economic Times, speaking on the condition of anonymity. 
 As per a news report in the ET, 7,000 employees, including those working at its five noodles plants in Moga, Pantnagar, Nanjangud, Bicholin and Tahliwal had the nightmare on April 30. That was when a 1998-batch food inspector by the name of Sanjay Singh in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki town turned the food giant's world upside down. As things moved from bad to worse and Nestle's nightmare snowballed into one of the biggest controversies of the year, Nestle had to press in its entire team into firefighting. It has flown in <keyword id="306047" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-chief-executive">global chief executive</keyword> Paul Bulcke and executives from across the world, including longest-serving brand head <keyword id="320433" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivani-Hegde">Shivani Hegde</keyword> from Sri Lanka, to manage the crisis. In India, it cancelled leaves of all employees and they have been putting in almost 20-hour work days. 
 Few of the facts are in public domain. Nestle, known for being one of the most media-shy companies in the consumer-goods space, sent out text invites for its only media briefing since the mega controversy broke out, postmidnight Thursday, according to the ET. The conference was at 12 noon on Friday, and there wasn't even enough time to send out email invites. Public relations agency Text 100 was given the mandate to organise the conference. The statement announcing the voluntary recall of <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles was also mailed by Nestle's communications team at the unearthly 12.54 am, to be exact. Enough proof that Nestle India, maker of the once popular Maggi noodles, is working 24X7. 
 
 The firefighting had begun on all fronts, but a little late. "The company's reticence in the face of the mounting controversy is surprising. Its press conference came 16 days after the news broke on UP FDA's findings. 16 days is an eternity in an age of social media," financial services firm Kotak Institutional <keyword id="45369" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="equities">Equities</keyword> wrote in a consumer note dated June 5. The issue "appears to have surpassed all recent food-safety controversies involving well-known brands (worms in Cadbury Dairy Milk, pesticides in Coke/Pepsi). The company's automated twitter responses have done little to assuage consumer fears. Consumer confidence is seriously dented and the company's strategy of calling its consumers 'confused' (and basing its voluntary recall of the product on this 'confusion') does further damage," the report said. 
 "Nestle underestimated the impact of the controversy in the initial days. They were, in a sense, caught completely <keyword id="196983" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="off-guard">off-guard</keyword>. By the time they decided to act, the fire had <keyword id="54921" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="spread">spread</keyword> wild," a top communications expert told the financial daily. 
 At the press briefing which Bulcke, India <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> <keyword id="1685339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Etienne-Benet">Etienne Benet</keyword> and Hegde hosted, the mood went from defensive to almost defiant. "We were waiting for internal investigation results," Bulcke said, when he was asked about the long delay in acknowledging and addressing the issue. 
 
Nestle is also not commenting on lobbying firm Apco being given the mandate to douse the Maggi fire. Apco, which managed PR for Vibrant Gujarat, too, isn't talking. But executives in the know said the first priority is getting the government on their side, which it believes will lead to restoring consumer confidence. 
 
Nestle employees have been told not to talk to anyone - not even to trade partners - unless approved by the legal team. Those working in plants have been told not to go on leave as every product is being tested and re-tested several times, people involved with the company said. 
The company, whose market cap has lost 15% (Rs 10,300 crore), over the past one week, will take a hit of about 7% in sales because of the Maggi recall. 
 Maggi is a Rs 2,000-crore brand, the biggest in the company's portfolio, and Nestle could lose Rs 180 crore in monthly sales until the product is back on shelves, said Abneesh Roy, an <keyword id="2891003" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="analyst-and-associate-director">analyst and associate director</keyword> at Edelweiss Securities. 
 The Maggi fire has burnt rivals too, which are looking at the controversy grudgingly. Sales of the entire noodles category are down by close to 80% in the country - the fifth largest instant noodles market in the world. Retailers like Savemax have removed all <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> of other Maggi products like ketchup too, which were giving noodles for free as promotions. 
 
In 2014, the domestic instant noodle market was valued at Rs 3,800 crore, with value growth of 7.4% and volume growth of 2.9%.

Noodle and sauce maker <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> surged more than 3 percent to 2-week highs after the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> set aside two orders against the FMCG major which had resulted in Maggi noodles being removed from shelves in India and many parts of the world. 
 
The Bombay High Court said the government failed to follow principles of natural justice and struck down the ban order. However, the court ordered samples of maggie be sent to three independent labs for further tests. 
 
Two months ago the Food Standards Authority in India had banned maggi noodles after some lab reports indicated the presence of Lead metal in the widely consumed product. The ban had lead to maggi being recalled by Nestle from across the world. 
 
The High Court gave six weeks to government's FSSAI and the Maharashtra FDA to appeal against its order in the Supreme Court. 
 
Meanwhile, Nestle surged 213.70 rupees, or 3.4 percent to 6,450 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. The stock was above 7,000 rupees before the controversy started and fell to about 5,550 rupees when the crisis hit its peak in early June.

After the Maggie row, the food safety debate has become intense both in India and abroad. More than 2,100 import batches of ‘made in India’ products across food, personal care and health supplement categories were rejected by the US food and drug regulator in the past one year. Most of the products were by leading companies such as <keyword id="6365619" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hindustan-UniLever">Hindustan Unilever</keyword>, Britannia, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>, Haldiram, Heinz India and MTR Foods. 
 
 The reasons for rejection vary from minor labelling issues to products manufactured in unhygienic conditions to pesticides being above permissible limits, according to data put out by the <keyword id="6356255" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="US-Food-and-Drug-Administration">US Food and Drug Administration</keyword> (USFDA) on its website. 
 
Several companies argued that the bulk of products were shipped without their knowledge by unauthorised third-party traders. 
 
 "Instances of product rejections could be either due to improper storage and distribution done by unauthorised exporters. In case our official export products are rejected, we always re-test them at FDA-approved labs," said AK Tyagi, director at <keyword id="2897684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Haldiram-Manufacturing-Ltd-">Haldiram Manufacturing Ltd.</keyword> Tyagi added that the US FDA regularly inspected its facilities in India and its products conform to global safety norms. 
 
RS Sodhi, managing director of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, the maker of Amul dairy products, said while quality standards of Indian packaged food products were based on global norms, rejection of batches was an important issue which needed to be addressed. 
 
Britannia said it exports to the US only out of USFDA-registered factories in India and meets all product and labelling standards. The products that were rejected by the USFDA were not shipped directly by the company. 
 
Similarly, both Hindustan Unilever and Nestle India said the products that were banned were not exported by them. 
 "We wish to clarify that in 2015, HUL has not received any refusal from USFDA for any of the products that it exports to the US market through its authorised distributor which is registered with the USFDA. We wish to further clarify that the <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> refused import into the US by USFDA in 2015 have not been exported by HUL,” said a company spokesman. 
 
A Nestle spokesman said the company had checked the FDA site and some of the batches are described as coming from factories that do not produce products for export to the US. 
 
 "This means that the batches were so called 'grey market' exports - exports which were not organised or controlled by the company but by other individuals or entities. This explains why the batches were rejected," he said At times, companies are not even aware that their products have been rejected. "As a responsible company, we will always cooperate with any query should it come in," said a <keyword id="2200852" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mondelez-India">Mondelez India</keyword> spokesperson. 
 
 
After the Maggie row, The USFDA, too, has begun testing of samples of Maggi noodles manufactured in India and sourced by retailers in America from third-party importers 
 
Instances of rejection have marred India’s food industry’s image previously too. Just last month, the USFDA rejected 53 Haldiram-made consignments due to presence of pesticide in fried snacks, potato snacks and sweets, claiming they were either not adequately processed or manufactured, or packaged in insanitary conditions. 
 
 
In April this year, Mondelez India's batch containing chocolate candy bar with nuts and fruits was rejected since "the article appears to have been manufactured, processed, or packed under insanitary conditions", said a statement on the FDA website. 
 
Also, one might remember that in January, it had rejected instant noodles manufactured in Nestle's Moga factory since the packaging label didn't outline all ingredients.
