"Technology is actually making the lines between functions more blurred than they have been in the past," she said.Business Insider spoke with Hulce at Indeed's annual FutureWorks event, where CEO Chris Hyams announced the company's new <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.indeed.com/lead/the-world-can-work-better">Pathfinder</a> product, an AI tool that serves as a kind of agent to help job seekers zero in on relevant career opportunities.Hulce said that Indeed would infuse more AI into its products over the next year and that the long-term goal of these initiatives was better worker well-being. "It's about how to help people navigate their choices in a format that feels conversational," she said, "to help you find whatever it is in the world that makes you happy."The following has been edited for length and clarity.How are you and other business leaders driving AI adoption in companies?Companies are trying to decide how much to focus on big, bold, transformational projects versus more bottoms-up adoption.A lot of leaders have come to the realization that you can't totally mandate AI. You need to have some bottoms-up adoption. You need to have champions. You need to have people sharing stories of how it made their lives better.For people who haven't yet experienced it, it can feel scary. But if you have peers sharing stories of tools they're using, how it's helping, and how it's making life simpler, and there's peer-to-peer sharing and learning, that helps it catch on.There are certain AI capabilities that we want to use more systematically. So, for example, in our sales organization, we have software for coaching, so we're saying, we want you to use it this way. Because we want people to have coaching conversations, and here's a tool that will enable it. It's here to make it simpler.It can be completely overwhelming if you try to change everything all at once. So you have to start with use cases that solve a real problem. Pick a use case and show how AI tools are really helping to solve this in a simpler, faster way, and then you can start to naturally build from that.If you try to eat the whole elephant at the same time, it's just too overwhelming. In a lot of change initiatives, you have to get some wins, and you have to show people the wins. If it sounds like you're talking a big game, you can lose people.Are there practical ways that companies are encouraging their teams to start using AI?Companies can see how every piece of software they run their businesses on is going to come with AI capabilities.People learn how to use new software all the time, so if the next generation of software is all coming with built-in AI capabilities, it actually isn't so scary. It becomes a feature inside of something they already use that helps make their work faster, easier, and better.In our organization, we've given people the ability to use things that are common — like how to use ChatGPT appropriately. We also have tools like Glean, and so many other software providers are coming out with AI-enabled capabilities. People are using Zoom and its AI to synthesize hourlong meetings after the fact.That's one very practical thing that everyone's living through right now, and it's an easy way to step into the problem.How are you and other C-suite leaders thinking differently about guiding their organizations through this rapid change?There is a lot of reflection about how to keep learning new things. The pace of change is accelerating, and that means we all have to be constant learners and students of the business.When you see what technologies can do, it also means that traditional ways of thinking about functions may start to make less sense than they used to. You have to actually think about these problems from a different lens.Some of the core problem-solving capabilities: How do you design better workflows and operational flows? How do you help excite people who feel daunted because things are changing? Those are skills that become more and more important.It is also crucial that leaders within C-suites understand more about other functions than they do today. You can have lots of different functional leaders who grew up in and have expertise in their function — but when you're solving customer problems, you're solving operational problems. These are customer problems, end to end.At Salesforce's Dreamforce this year, we listened to the Salesforce head of customer success say that what they used most was Data Cloud, which most people think is for the technical people. And they use Marketing Cloud because most of customer success is actually marketing-led outreach at scale.So those two disciplines together are actually more important for my success and customer success than what people would normally think. Technology is making the lines between functions more blurred than they have been in the past.What do today's C-suite leaders need to leave behind? What doesn't work anymore?Some of this is typical leadership advice, but there are people who have ascended in a particular function based on their competence in that function.The challenge in this moment in leadership is to reimagine how all these things should happen. There can be some natural resistance to that. When you get to leadership, you have to keep challenging. You have to keep reinventing.The pace of change now and the potential for reinvention, it's just so much greater and so much faster than it was before. How do you think about problems more cross-functionally, more creatively, and with more potential for reinvention? Five years from now, how companies do work will be 80% different across a range of functions. People have to be willing to say, "OK, there's a much better way to do things."

As AI innovation takes hold, business leaders need to think cross-functionally and keep learning, says Maggie Hulce, Indeed's chief revenue officer

Encouraged by volume growth, margin improvement and recovery in rural sales, India's top fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are now back to their normal growth cycle as they step up investments as well as spending on advertising and marketing. <keyword id="84065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-companies" source="Orion">FMCG companies</keyword> are chasing volume growth again after a gap of a few quarters, offering higher grammage and price cuts thanks to inflationary pressures softening on key raw materials for everything from soaps to food items. Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Dabur, Marico, Godrej Consumer Products, ITC, Tata Consumer Products and Nestle reported volume recovery in the March quarter and said they expect a gradual pickup in consumption in FY24. "The prospects of a sustained recovery have strengthened. After five quarters of volume decline, the sector has posted volume growth," Marico MD and CEO Saugata Gupta said in the company's earnings conference call. "Urban consumption has been steady while rural is showing some convincing signs of having bottomed out." Foods continue to drive growth for the sector, while the home and personal care segment also entered positive territory after an extended slowdown. Marico, which owns popular brands like Saffola, Parachute and Livon, reported an 18.7 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit to Rs 305 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2023 while sales rose 3.65 per cent to Rs 2,240 crore, driven by single-digit volume growth and moderation in commodity prices. HUL said rural areas have shown improvement with higher value growth sequentially. While HUL's volumes continue to fall, the extent of decline has reduced versus last quarter. "The slowdown in the FMCG market is bottoming out. This improvement was led by volumes, which have turned flat in this quarter, versus a mid-single-digit decline in the December quarter," said HUL CFO Ritesh Tiwari in its earnings call. The makers of popular brands such as Rin, Lux, Surf Excel and Pond's said it expects the price-volume growth to rebalance further. "We expect volumes to recover gradually due to high levels of cumulative inflation and the fact that consumption habits typically recover with a lag," he said. For the March quarter, HUL reported an increase of 12.74 per cent in its consolidated net profit to Rs 2,601 crore. Net sales rose 10.83 per cent to Rs 14,926 crore. However, HUL warned the near-term operating environment is likely to remain volatile due to global slowdown risk and uncertainty related to weather phenomena like El Nino and heatwaves. Abneesh Roy, Nuvama Group Executive Director for Institutional Equities, said the outlook for the <keyword id="495979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-industry" source="Orion">FMCG industry</keyword> was "positive" with volume growth and improvement in margins for most companies in FY24. "As raw material prices are cooling off, companies shall start paring prices via grammage increase or gradual price reductions. Price growth shall ease while volume growth will improve," he said. Roy also cautioned about the impact of El Nino and the "aggression" from billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd, a known disrupter, which aims to be a big player in the USD 110-billion FMCG segment. Meanwhile, Godrej Consumer reported an 11.47 per cent increase in its India revenue to Rs 1,822.92 crore in the March quarter. This was led by volume growth of 11 per cent. Its home care segment, which consists of household insecticides and air fresheners, grew 14 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively. "We expect to build on the current momentum and deliver volume-led growth along with upfront marketing investments and improvement in profitability," said its Managing Director and CEO Sudhir Sitapati. Britannia Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Varun Berry also expressed optimism. "Volume growth will be certainly much better than this year," he said. On commodity prices, Berry said there is deflation in prices of palm oil, laminates and corrugated material for packing but flour and milk prices are soaring. "There are certain brands and certain packs where we have already initiated price reductions or promotions," he said. In the March quarter, Britannia reported a 47.53 per cent jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 557.60 crore. Its revenue from operations rose 10.93 per cent to Rs 3,892.02. Similarly, Dabur reported volume growth of 11 per cent during the March quarter and 14 per cent for FY23. Its quarterly net profit was Rs 292.76 crore and revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,677.8 crore. "Despite near-term concerns around inflationary pressures, we plan to accelerate the growth momentum by continuing to invest in brand building, innovation, and capabilities that will drive growth," said Dabur India CEO Mohit Malhotra. Other companies also recorded growth. ITC's revenue from the FMCG segment rose 19.34 per cent to Rs 4,951.17 crore from Rs 4,148.62 crore while EBITDA jumped 76 per cent. Nestle, the maker of Maggi, Kitkat and Nescafe, reported an increase of 24.69 per cent in its net profit to Rs 736.64 crore in the March quarter. Sales rose 20.43 per cent to Rs 4,808.40 crore. Tata Consumer reported a 21.12 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs 289.56 crore. Its revenue from operations was up 13.96 per cent at Rs 3,618.73 crore. Tata Consumer said it recorded growth in the India beverages business and food. It had a "strong margin growth and strong topline growth driven both by volume and price," the company said in its earnings call. "We have started seeing volume growth coming back. The impact of inflation and monetary tightening on economic growth and demand seems to be slowing down, but I would keep my fingers crossed and monitor it closely," said Tata Consumer MD and CEO Sunil D'Souza. "In the near term, we are seeing stability." FMCG makers expect sustained recovery in volume and margins with price reduction in FY24

Paul Bulcke, global CEO of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> SA, has said that their India unit is recuperating at an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/It-will-take-Nestle-3-years-to-undo-the-Maggi-damage-in-India/articleshow/51120095.cms">unexpectedly faster rate</a> after the setback prompted by <keyword id="2878534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-ban">Maggi ban</keyword> last. The ban had resulted in Maggi, Nestle’s flagship product in India, being off the shelves for five months. 
 
"India is recovering faster than anticipated, although it still weighed on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dynamics-have-changed-as-Indians-now-prefer-Amul-Mother-Dairy-over-Nestle-PepsiCo/articleshow/51790812.cms">Asia zone's overall performance</a>. In India, the Maggi noodles business gained back market share but the business results were affected by the unfavourable comparatives," Bulcke said while addressing investors after the company's Q1 earnings reports. Nestle follows a calendar financial year of January-December. 
 
Nestle performed the strongest in European and South East Asian markets, as well as in Africa. Organic growth for the Asia, Africa, Oceania (AOA) zone, which Nestle takes as a combined entity in earnings, was 2.1% as compared to 0.5% in the last quarter. 
 
Even though Maggi has regained its market share and has re-established itself as the leader of the noodles segment, the share is significantly lower than what it had before it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Exclusive-Nestle-India-CEO-admits-Maggi-ban-was-the-resultof-a-major-breakdown-in-communication-with-the-Govt/articleshow/49889701.cms">faced the ban</a> in last June. The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority India (FSSAI) had banned Maggi after it was found that it contained <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">more than permissible amount of lead</a>, along with mislabelling of flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG). 
 
It was only after multiple clearances, first by the Bombay High Court then by government labs, that Nestle was allowed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-food-authority-challenges-lifting-ban-on-Nestles-Maggi/articleshow/49814787.cms">resume the sales</a> of Maggi noodles in November.

 While Nestle has launched videos which show bachelors professing their love for <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> and articulating how much they miss it, Kolkata-based food and cigarette major ITC has come up with films that highlight the safety of Sunfeast Yippee noodles. The latest Youtube video show Yippee noodles being made in a sanitized environment in its factory. 
 Similarly, <keyword id="3026737" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cooperative-Milk-Marketing-Foundation">Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Foundation</keyword> (GCMMF), the maker behind the Amul brand of dairy products has been running ads emphasizing on the fact that their products are undergoing regular quality checks. Its rival, Mother Dairy is also not behind. Its ad campaign doing the rounds on social media shows its consumer on a plant visit. 
 
Meanwhile Nestle, the brand which was worst hit by regulators is already plotting the comeback of Maggi, piggybacking on its recent Maggi videos attracting around nine lakhs views in three days. 
 
"These short films reflect the spontaneity and affection between consumers and Maggi. We are making efforts to get Maggi Noodles back on the shelves and have been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support that we receive each day. Such messages strengthen our resolve to be back with our beloved consumers. We want to share the warmth of our relationship through these films," told a Nestle Indian spokesperson to Economic Times.

Nestle, ITC, Amul among companies to start consumer engagement exercises

The quarter that ended on March 31 wasn’t a good one for <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>, with the Swiss Trans-national F&amp;B company reporting a 19% decline in net profit. The result is a loss of the ban that flagship instant noodles <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">Maggi</a> faced in the country. 
 
As per the company statement, net profit for the quarter was Rs 259 crore as compared to Rs 320 crore for the corresponding quarter in 2015. 
 
"Results for the quarter have been impacted by the Maggi noodles issue in 2015," the company said in a statement. 
 
Talking of net sales, they dipped 8.5% to Rs 2,296 crore, which was below what analysts had estimated. Not only this, the company's total expenditure too fell 7.2% and stood at Rs 1,856 crore during the quarter. 
 
For the quarter that ended on December 31, 2015, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/WATCH-Nestles-new-ad-featuring-Sania-Mirza-andShoaib-Malik-is-adorable/articleshow/51409354.cms">Nestle India</a> had reported 43.8% year-on-year decline in net profit at Rs 183.19. 
 
The ban on Maggi was placed by the Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had banned after allegations that it contained more lead than allowed, and that the label didn’t provide the correct information regarding the flavour enhancer MSG (monosodium glutamate). It had taken five months for Maggi to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/It-will-take-Nestle-3-years-to-undo-the-Maggi-damage-in-India/articleshow/51120095.cms">return to markets</a>.

Nonetheless, the company is treading on the road to recovery, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nestle-CEO-says-Maggi-is-recovering-faster-than-expected-after-a-five-month-hitch/articleshow/51837924.cms">Maggi regaining leadership</a> with over 50% share within five months of the re-launch last year. However, its market share is much lower as compared to what it had before being banned, which was more than 75%.

John Sarbanes of Maryland, wrote a letter to Biden's Education Secretary Miguel Cardona stressing the need to improve the PSLF program to give public servants the loan forgiveness they deserve.The PSLF program allows government and nonprofit employees with federally backed student loans to apply for loan forgiveness after proof of 120 monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan, but <a href="https://studentaid.gov/data-center/student/loan-forgiveness/pslf-data">98% of all borrowers</a> from the general public have been rejected from the program."After the first round of forgiveness initially became available to PSLF borrowers more than three years ago, approval rates for the program have remained below 2.5%," the letter said. "The program has been beset by numerous 'donut holes' that disqualify certain types of loans, repayment plans and the payments themselves, leading to extraordinary confusion and distrust of the PSLF program and, by extension, the federal government."The lawmakers urged Cardona to waive barriers in PSLF, including to:<ul><li>Expand the definition of an "eligible loan" to include all federal student loans;</li><li>Make all repayment plans eligible for PSLF;</li><li>Waive the restriction that requires a borrower to be in public service at the time of loan forgiveness;</li><li>And establish data-sharing agreements with the Dept. of Defense and Office of Personnel management to automatically identify public service workers with outstanding <keyword id="1737245" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Student-Debt">student debt</keyword>.</li></ul>The letter also called for extensive communication from the Education Department to borrowers to ensure they are aware of any changes that might impact loan forgiveness.In past weeks, lawmakers from both parties have introduced legislation to reform the PSLF program. Sen. The same thing <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> owned Maggi must be pondering over after its rival in the instant noodle segment, <keyword id="6357073" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITC">ITC</keyword> has sued the former on the grounds of <keyword id="388837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="intellectual-property">intellectual property</keyword> infringement. 
 As per a news report by The Economic Times, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is planning to appeal against a Madras High Court interim order over its product, 'Maggi Magical Masala', in a case filed by ITC. The latter said the Maggi variant was launched on the back of the success of its 'Yippee! <keyword id="2835848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="magic-masala">Magic Masala</keyword>', thereby infringing on its intellectual property rights. 
 The respondent has to withdraw the Maggi Magical Masala variant even if it plans to file an appeal, ITC <keyword id="6457615" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Counsel">counsel</keyword> <keyword id="2835847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-C-Mohan">Arun C Mohan</keyword> of law firm <keyword id="2835450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mohan-Associates">Mohan Associates</keyword> told the ET. The financial daily has a copy of the interim order that was passed on April 29. The order said although ITC's instant noodle was marketed under the Sunfeast Yippee brand, it was popularly known as Magic Masala and ITC not only used the term first, but showed it had won <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword> against its rival with the product. 
 An ITC <keyword id="6357308" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="spokesperson">spokesperson</keyword> declined to comment on the issue. A spokesperson of Nestle India has told the daily,”We have seen the interim order and are preparing to file an appeal." "The respondent cannot sell this variant till the time they win after making the appeal. The judgment is significant in the sense that an IPR infringement can be enforced even against a <keyword id="139821" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-leader">market leader</keyword>," Mohan said. 
 
As per market estimates, Nestle has around 72% volume share in instant noodles against ITC's 18%. This is put at 74% and 17% by value, respectively. These figures could not be independently confirmed with Nestle and ITC.
