<ul class="summary-list"><li>Scientists say they observed a planet that may have an ocean-covered surface, the Guardian reported.</li><li>The observations were made using NASA's James Webb space telescope.</li></ul>Researchers say they have observed a <a target="_blank" href="https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/exoplanet-catalog/7571/toi-270-d/">Neptune-like</a> planet that could be covered by a deep-water ocean, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/mar/08/astronomers-detect-waterworld-with-a-boiling-ocean-in-deep-space?fbclid=IwAR05Ygwpv64-frgfibQcglp6qAZy2Gy55rZ-gvltUB3SeATacVWvt9zGXoA">the Guardian</a> reported.A team from the University of Cambridge in the UK said it had found evidence of water vapor and chemical signatures of carbon dioxide and methane on an exoplanet known as TOI-270 d, which is around 70 light years away.The team used NASA's James Webb space telescope to make observations of the planet, which has twice the radius of Earth and a mass of 4.78 Earths, per <a target="_blank" href="https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/exoplanet-catalog/7571/toi-270-d/">NASA</a>.Nikku Madhusudhan, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Cambridge who led the research, told the Guardian, "the ocean could be upwards of 100 degrees [Celsius] or more," adding that with high atmospheric pressure, that ocean could still be liquid.But it was "not clear if it would be habitable," he said.The planet is also tidally locked, meaning one side is left in constant darkness while the other faces its star, per the report."The ocean would be extremely hot on the day side. The night side could potentially host habitable conditions," Madhusudhan added.A liquid ocean is the preferred premise set out in a paper published in the journal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2024/03/aa48238-23/aa48238-23.html">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics</a>.The paper also notes the lack of ammonia on TOI-270 d, which it said was "consistent with predictions for a Hycean world with a planet-wide ocean" under a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.However, a group of <a target="_blank" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.03325">Canadian researchers who also observed TOI-270 d have disputed the Cambridge team's claims.</a>While they detected the same chemicals in the planet's atmosphere, one of the researchers told the Guardian that they believed the temperature was "too warm for water to be liquid."Université de Montréal Professor Björn Benneke said that surface temperatures on the exoplanet could be around 4,000 degrees Celsius, or around 7,200 degrees Fahrenheit.He added that this meant any water would be in a supercritical state, where "it's almost like a thick, hot fluid."<div type="image" title="image of the colorful nebula in space" height="1307" width="1500" msid="108564372" hostid="261" sizebytes="160428"></div>The James Webb telescope has played a key role in advancing the search for habitable planets beyond Earth.The telescope intercepts infrared light and directs it to scientific instruments where it can be recorded.One of its main uses is to study the atmospheres of exoplanets to see whether they could support life.One key that scientists look for in a potentially habitable planet is the presence of liquid water.The area around a star where water can exist in a liquid state is called the "<a target="_blank" href="https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/faq/15/what-is-the-habitable-zone-or-goldilocks-zone/">habitable zone</a>" or "Goldilocks' zone." <ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-telescope-question-mark-space-galaxies-colliding-2023-8">NASA's James Webb Space Telescope</a> discovered signs of a vast ocean on the planet K2-18 b.</li><li>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shiny-planet-solar-system-metal-clouds-defies-science-2023-7">exoplanet</a> lies 120 light-years away, likely has an ice core, and may be a new type of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-tess-telescope-habitable-world-31-light-years-away-2019-7">habitable world</a>.</li></ul>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-best-images-from-first-year-2022-12">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has discovered evidence that a planet beyond our solar system may be covered in an ocean of water.Astronomers can't directly look at the surface of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronomers-spot-star-swallowing-planet-sneak-peek-earth-death-2023-5">planet</a>, called K2-18 b, but Webb analyzed its atmosphere for hints of what may lie below.The results make this planet, just 120 light-years away, look more and more like a place that could be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-hunt-for-distant-worlds-some-may-harbor-life-2022-7">habitable for life</a>.<div type="image" title="James Webb Space Telescope" height="1536" width="2048" msid="103616892" hostid="261"></div>The most potentially game-changing discovery from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-new-image-farthest-star-detected-2023-8">the NASA observatory</a> — and the one to be most cautious about — is a hint of a molecule called dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which is only known to come from life. "We might be seeing literally the first steps towards <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-nasa-could-tell-us-aliens-are-real-2023-2">identification of life elsewhere</a>," Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge who led the new research, told Insider.Though intriguing, that data is uncertain and is not a clear detection of that molecule. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-no-contact-with-aliens-2019-9">It's too soon to cry "aliens,"</a> but astronomers are keen to investigate further.<h2>Dimethyl sulfide would be a 'smoking gun' for life</h2>The only thing known to make DMS is life, mostly phytoplankton in Earth's oceans. Therefore, if it were confirmed on K2-18 b, it would be a "very good smoking gun for some sort of biological activity," down there, Madhusudhan said. However, such an extraordinary discovery requires extraordinarily strong evidence.When Madhusudhan's team massaged the new Webb data to mimic a particular type of instrument error, the signal for DMS disappeared.That's a strong mark against the molecule's existence on K2-18 b. He hopes to publish new results from fresh Webb observations by this time next year, providing more evidence either for or against the presence of DMS on K2-18 b."Our discovery is the kind that, if it survives, you will look at it 10 years from now and say, well, that's where it all started," Madhusudhan said.<h2>Webb solves the 'missing methane' mystery</h2>What is clear in the data, and groundbreaking in its own right, is that Webb detected methane in the atmosphere of K2-18 b.The discovery solves a decade-long "missing methane" problem, in which astronomers knew there should be methane in certain planets' atmospheres but they just couldn't find it. Finding methane is important because it contains carbon, which is a foundational element for life as we know it."Even the most basic thing that we are saying — that we found carbon-based molecules — is a huge revolution in the field," Madhusudhan said.Confirming these findings requires a lot more observation of K2-18 b. Over the course of the next year, Madhusudhan has time scheduled with Webb to observe the planet more, as does another team of astronomers.<h2>Webb spotted molecules in the planet's atmosphere that Hubble couldn't see</h2>At 2.6 times the size of Earth, and 8.6 times its mass, K2-18 b is not the type of planet that scientists traditionally consider when they're looking for alien life.It's a "sub-Neptune" or a "mini-Neptune." Its interior is probably filled with ice, rather than rock. As Blain put it: "K2-18 b is not exactly an Earth twin."But previous observations of this planet, with the Hubble Space Telescope, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/water-vapor-on-potentially-habitable-super-earth-exoplanet-2019-9">hinted that it could have water vapor in its atmosphere</a>. That was intriguing enough that Madhusudhan and his collaborators peered at it with Webb earlier this year. When starlight passes through K2-18 b's atmosphere, the molecules in the air there will absorb some wavelengths of light and reflect others. By analyzing which wavelengths make it through and shine at Earth, across the infrared spectrum of light, Webb can identify the unique "spectral" fingerprints of different compounds in the atmosphere.Webb can analyze those spectra in much higher resolution than Hubble. The results, shared on Monday by <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/2023/webb-discovers-methane-carbon-dioxide-in-atmosphere-of-k2-18b">NASA</a> and the European Space Agency, were clear: There's probably carbon dioxide and methane in that atmosphere.<div type="image" title="chart showing spectra of starlight from planet k2-18 b that indicate carbon dioxide, methane, and possibly dimethyl sulfide" height="2160" width="3840" msid="103616894" hostid="261"></div>These <a href="https://esawebb.org/media/archives/releases/sciencepapers/weic2321/weic2321.pdf">findings</a>, which are set to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, put a new type of planet on the map in the search for alien life.Mini-Neptunes haven't been considered the best alien-life candidates in the past, but they seem to be the <a href="https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/what-is-an-exoplanet/planet-types/neptune-like/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most common</a> type of planet in our galaxy. Now, with Webb's power, astronomers can see exactly what's in their atmospheres."It opens up other possibilities," Eliza Kempton, an astronomer at the University of Maryland, who specializes in the spectra of exoplanet atmospheres, told Insider."This is the first sub-Neptune-sized planet to show us a beautifully featured spectrum. This is something that we've been waiting for, for a long time," she said.<h2>This could be a new type of world: the 'Hycean' planet</h2>Planet K2-18 b could be the first known "Hycean" world — a theoretical type of planet with a thick hydrogen atmosphere and a surface covered in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saturns-death-star-moon-mimas-may-have-a-secret-ocean-2022-1">an ocean of water</a>.The Webb observations of K2-18 b are "remarkably well in agreement" with models predicting the atmospheres of Hycean worlds, according to Markus Scheucher, who led some of those models. Namely, the presence of both methane and carbon dioxide with no ammonia, "would hint at an ocean interacting with the atmosphere," Scheucher, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Insider in an email. "Based on what we know about how atmospheric chemistry operates, there is no other explanation," Madhusudhan, who led the team that first proposed Hycean worlds in 2021, said.Still, Kempton is not so certain and said more modeling needs to be done to ensure that the signatures Webb observed could only come from an ocean. Since the study of Hycean atmospheres is so new, it's possible that scientists haven't yet discovered other processes that could make the carbon dioxide and methane detected in K2-18 b's atmosphere. "I'd want to see those kinds of studies really digging into: 'Is this a unique signature of a water ocean or not?' — because it's such an indirect argument — before I'd be really comfortable saying there's liquid water under there," Kempton told Insider.If the ocean does exist, Madhusudhan said, there's a chance it would be too hot for life.Correction: September 13, 2023 — An earlier version of this article misstated Doriann Blain's past affiliation. Jai Hind," the political party said to its supporters. However, it did not specify for how long Twitter blocked its account but tweeted again on Wednesday after Monday. Twitter blocks Karnataka BJP account for its tweets on 'liberal views'

Mumbai, Jan 17 () E-commerce giant Amazon's chief executive and world's richest person Jeff Bezos on Friday concluded his three-day India visit with meeting captains of Indian industry.
Among those who met included Reliance Industries chairman and richest Indian Mukesh Ambani, who is also into retailing, and a host of other c-suite honchos.
The meeting was held at a star hotel in South Mumbai this morning.
Others who were present included SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar, Godrej Group chairman Adi Godrej, Zarin Daruwala of Standard Chartered Bank, Xiaomi's India Head Manu Jain, Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy and Bank of America's Kaku Nakhate.
Retail and Fast Moving Consumer Goods players, including Kishore Biyani of Fture Group (where Amazon has an investment), Hindustan Unilever's Sanjiv Mehta, Nestle India's Suresh Narayanan and Proctor and Gamble India's Madhusudhan Gopalan were also present.
Sunil Mittal of Bharti Airtel was also present for the meeting wherein Bezos was accompanied by the head of Amazon in India, Amit Agarwal.
Among others were Infosys' Salil Parekh, HSBC's Surendra Rosha and Ola's Bhavish Agarwal.
 The business leaders posed for a group photo on the hotel's stairs before departing.
Bezos visited Rajghat in New Delhi on Tuesday, followed it up with a meet with small businesses on Wednesday and spent time with Bollywood celebrities on Thursday evening as part of the visit.
He has announced investments of USD 1 billion over the next few years and also create 1 million new jobs in India by 2025.
Bezos could not reportedly get an audience with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stoked a controversy by stating that the e-commerce giant which is being investigated for predatory pricing is not doing India any favour by the investment. AA MKJ

<ul><li>The first phase of the Indian general election saw multiple outbreaks of violence in different parts of the country.</li><li>At least two separate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were detonated, while others were caught before they could be triggered.</li><li>Andhra Pradesh was a hotbed of political clashes, which also resulted in the death of a <keyword id="83019" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telugu-Desam-Party">Telugu Desam Party</keyword> (TDP) members.</li><li>EVMs were also targets of violence where multiple attempts were made to destroy them, some of which were successful.</li></ul>The first phase of the Indian general election isn’t off the best start. Multiple reports of violence have been <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/india/violence-reports-of-evm-glitches-and-missing-names-mar-round-one-of-election-2019/articleshow/68835236.cms">reported</a> in 20 states that were up for polling today. Although most of the incidents were centered Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh. One of the first reports of violence was an improvised explosive device (IED) attack <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/politics/naxals-trigger-ied-blast-in-chhattisgarhs-bastar-constituency-amid-polling-no-casualty-reported-2098061.html">allegedly</a> by the Naxalites in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh but thankfully, there were no casualties. Similarly, another IED blast by Naxalites <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/maharashtra/maharashtra-naxals-trigger-ied-blast-near-polling-booth/articleshow/68829732.cms">went off</a> in the Waghezari area of the Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra. No casualties were reported their either. An IED was also detected inside an old oil pipeline in Assam but it was removed before it could detonate. Firearms were also <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/4-naxals-arrested-3-firearms-seized-amid-polling-in-chhattisgarh-2021331">seized</a> from four guerrilla Naxalites in Bijapur of Chhattisgarh, while polling was still underway. However, in Andhra Pradesh, clashes between leaders actually led to the <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/andhra-pradesh-sees-violence-during-ls-polls-with-two-leaders-killed-after-tdp-ysrc-party-workers-clash-in-anantapur-6430801.html">death</a> of Sidda Bhaskar Reddy — a local leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) — in Tadipatri. The opposition, <keyword id="302547" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="YSR-Congress-Party">YSR Congress Party</keyword> (YSRCP), is alleging that one of their party workers also died in the clashes but the police are yet to confirm. While the TDP <a href="https://www.aninews.in/news/national/politics/tdp-accuses-ysrcp-leaders-of-violence-writes-to-dgp20190411154129/">accused</a> YSRCP of using violence in an attempt to win the elections, the YSRCP accused TDP was rigging votes and manipulating poll booths. Clashes also broke out in other parts of the state like Eluru City where a YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) member was allegedly attacked by members of the TDP and Jammalamadugu of Kadapa district, where both parties were reportedly caught in a stoning match. In another corner of Andhra Pradesh — the Narasaraopet constituency of Guntur — TDP workers were seen ransacking the polling booth and damaging the room.

 People also tried to forcibly enter the polling booth in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh without their voter IDs compelling the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to fire shots in the air in order to control the situation. Madhusudhan Gupta from the Jana Sena Party was also arrested for being violent in one of the poll booths of Guntakal — another constituency in Andhra Pradesh — where he tried to destroy an electronic voting machine (EVM) that allegedly did not work properly.

NEW DELHI: Big reputations are at stake in Wednesday's polling with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, BJP's top leaders Narendra Modi, L K Advani, Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley apart from former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao seeking a popular mandate. 
 
Some riveting contests like the Jaitley versus Amarinder duel in Amritsar or the Badal versus Badal showdown in Bathinda are set to be decided as 89 seats in seven states and two Union Territories go to polls. 
 
BJP veteran M M Joshi, who moved to Kanpur to make way for Modi in Varanasi, takes on coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal in a contest where the local pitch could get swamped by a pro-Modi sentiment. 
 
Jhansi is the stage for sanyasin Uma Bharati's comeback bid as she looks to unseat Congress's Pradeep Jain, banking on the "Modi Kashi se, Uma Bharati Jhansi se" slogan. 
 
The 14 seats in UP's central and Bundelkhand areas that go to polls delivered good returns for Congress in 2009 but its incumbents, including two ministers — Jaiswal and Jitin Prasada — are finding the going tough. Sonia is not expected to face much of a challenge in Rae Bareli — the other Gandhi borough of Amethi goes to polls on May 7 — even if her party does not find it easy to repeat the 2009 result where the party did well in 14 seats going to polls. 
 
Bahujan Samaj Party comes across as a strong presence in the region where the Samajwadi Party seems to be taking a back seat after having been the main challenger to BJP in the previous three rounds in UP. 
 
Though Modi's win from Vadodara against Congress's Madhusudhan Mistry is not in doubt, the BJP leader will look to maximize returns in the 26 seats at stake in Gujarat with Congress still a force in tribal areas. In fact, BJP has not found it easy to replicate its dominance in assembly polls in Lok Sabha elections and will hope that Modi's projection gives it a decisive edge this time around. 
 
After having precipitated a minor crisis over his demand to shift from Gandhinagar to Bhopal, Advani should be coasting with the onus squarely on Modi to ensure that the veteran wins convincingly. 
 
Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal, who replaced Modi baiter Harin Pathak in Ahmedabad (East), looks a shoo-in too while some Congress leaders like Shankarsihn Vaghela will fancy his chances in Sabarkantha.

Down south, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao is contesting both the Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies in Medak in Telangana as he hopes to emerge as the dominant political force in what will be India's 29th state. KCR is locked in a bitter battle with Congress after he evaded a merger with the party, a manoeuver intended to ensure that TRS's post-poll options are not restricted. 
 
Bathinda is the stage for a grudge match between the rebel Badal, Manpreet Singh, and Harsimrat Kaur, wife of Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal. Manpreet, a former Akali finance minister, was routed in the assembly elections and is looking to settle scores with estranged cousin Sukhbir by scripting an upset in a hard fought and vituperative contest. 
 
Amritsar is set to witness a needle fight as Jaitley hopes to overcome incumbency against the Akali-BJP government by focusing on national issues while Amarinder harps on local resentments to score against his rival. 
 
Amarinder's wife Preneet is in the fray from the family bastion of Patiala while other notable contests in Punjab include former actor Vinod Khanna contesting on a BJP ticket from Gurdaspur against Congress state chief Partap Singh Bajwa.
