As the erotic horror film, Ragini MMS 2, releases on Friday the 21st, let us take a look at some of the most spine-chilling horror movies Bollywood has churned out over the years. Get ready for the edge-of-the-seat experience. 
 
1. Mahal (1949) 
Aayega aanewala... does the song give you goosebumps? That’s the magic of this song, crooned in the movie by the spirit of a woman who is waiting for her dead lover. It effectively adds to the eerie setting of this story of reincarnation, starring <keyword id="6363061" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ashok-kumar">Ashok Kumar</keyword> and Madhubala. Intriguing and haunting, Mahal is a must-watch, especially for Kamal Amrohi’s direction and the fine performance by the lead pair. 
 
2. Bees Saal Baad (1962) Starring Biswajeet and <keyword id="6442163" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Waheeda-Rehman">Waheeda Rehman</keyword>, Bees Saal Baad is still remembered for the spooky song, Kahin deep jale kahin dil. Loosely based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, this flick is deliciously spooky in places, with many mind-numbing moments. Here you have a mysterious lady in a flowing white saree, the ghungroos, the haunting voice singing at night and many more incidents to keep you hooked. And the climax is juicy enough to entertain the connoisseurs of suspense thrillers. 
 
3. Gumnaam (1965) 
Gumnaam takes inspiration from <keyword id="162689" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Agatha">Agatha</keyword> Christie’s novel, And Then There Were None (also known as Ten Little Niggers). The basic plot of the film goes like this – 10 strangers stranded on an island get killed one by one. The film has everything that’s synonymous with edge-of-the-seat experience – suspense, thrill, fear, perfect characterisation and of course, a haunting song, Gumnaam hai koi. 
 
4. Jaani Dushman (1979) 
The story of Jaani Dushman is based in a village, which is notorious for the mysterious killings of brides dressed in red. The bidaai song Chalo re doli uthao kahaar is an indication that another bride is going to be attacked by a mysterious monster. The creature can’t be killed as every time someone tries to kill it, it leaves its own body and possesses the body of the person who tries to kill it. The multi-starrer film was a box-office hit. 
 
5. 100 Days (1991) 
More than a horror film, 100 Days is a spine-chilling entertainer starring <keyword id="6355846" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Madhuri-Dixit">Madhuri Dixit</keyword>, <keyword id="297" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jackie-Shroff">Jackie Shroff</keyword> and <keyword id="675553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jaaved-Jaffery">Jaaved Jaffery</keyword>. Madhuri is gifted with extrasensory perception and she gets sudden glimpses of future incidents. One day, she sees her sister being murdered and after a few days, her sister gets killed the way Madhuri has envisioned it. Can she find the killer and unravel the mystery? Watch the movie and find out! By the way, it is a remake of the Tamil film Nooravathu Naal. 
 
6. Raat (1992) Produced by <keyword id="6355246" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ram-Gopal-Varma">Ram Gopal Varma</keyword>, Raat is an epic horror film. Leading lady <keyword id="36561" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="revathi">Revathi</keyword>’s life becomes a roller-coaster ride after a cat is accidentally killed by her father’s car. From spine-chilling encounters to possessed souls and haunted house – every possible bloodcurdling element is packed here. Raat is, indeed, one of the best horror movies ever made in Bollywood. 
 
7. Vaastu Shastra (2004) 
A family including a couple and their son, as well as the wife’s sister, shifts to a new house. Just when they begin to live happily, the boy starts interacting with kids whom no one else can see. Initially, the parents dismiss it as child’s fancy but as things start to take a gory turn, they begin to take notice. But unfortunately, it’s too late by then. 
 
8. 1920 (2008) 
Haunted houses are hot favourites of those who love the horror genre and 1920 is a period film that portrays a haunted haveli (castle). A married couple comes to live in the haveli and experiences mysterious happenings, which are out of human control. If you believe in God and His power to save one from evil spirits, you will enjoy this film. 
 
9. 13 B Although this movie is marred by poor direction, the plot makes it a must-watch. The protagonist, R. <keyword id="4759" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Madhavan">Madhavan</keyword>, shifts to a new house 13-B but under a mysterious scheme of things, his life gets connected to a TV serial. Whatever happens in the TV serial, also happens with his family in real life. What’s more, that serial only comes on their TV. The film hooks you from the first frame till the last. 
 
10. Ragini MMS (2011) 
The movie has been partially inspired by the 2007 Hollywood horror flick, Paranormal Activity. It also takes cues from the real life incident of a Delhi-based girl called Deepika. She reportedly fell prey to a spirit’s wrath at a haunted house where her boyfriend took her and tried to make an MMS without her knowledge. The film was produced by <keyword id="378" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jeetendra">Jeetendra</keyword> and <keyword id="154993" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shobha-Kapoor">Shobha Kapoor</keyword> of Balaji Telefilms.

Horror Flicks From Bollywood That You Must Not Miss

The viral video starring <keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> is the third in line for the <keyword id="2785822" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vogue-Empower">Vogue Empower</keyword> campaign by <keyword id="214428" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vogue-India">Vogue India</keyword>. The first two videos for the campaign had a sense of connection attached with them, which was why we were really looking forward to the third instalment. 
 
‘Going Home’ starring Alia Bhatt and directed by Vikas Bahl got us thinking about a perfect society where a woman is not afraid of asking for a lift from a group of strangers in the late hours of the night. 
 
Similarly, ‘Start With The Boys’ starring Madhuri Dixit and directed by Vinil Mathew touched the right chords when it asked the parents to raise boys who don’t make women cry, instead of raising boys who don’t cry. 
 The third video by <keyword id="27704" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Homi-Adajania">Homi Adajania</keyword> however, talks about the same old topic of liberating women from the cages that our society has created for them. The idea behind the video was to show 99 women in from different walks of life in a 2-minute video. As far as that is concerned, the video looks okay, like many others that have been made on or around the same topic, but if you listen too closely, the video wouldn’t make much sense to a common Indian woman. 
 The video starts with a sans-makeup Deepika and her frizzy hair, talking about the spirit that can’t be bound in clothes, and the many faces of privileged women dancing contemporary. We also see some known faces, like Adhuna Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Scherezade Shroff and <keyword id="6366186" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nimrat-Kaur">Nimrat Kaur</keyword>. 
 
The makers have talked about women voicing their choice for equality, be it social, political, economic, sexual, and it sounds acceptable if we don’t go in the details, which unfortunately we have to because of Deepika’s constant voice-over in the background without which the video is nothing but a collection of some 90 portraits. 
 
Talking of the details, she demands the equality of having sex without marriage, outside of marriage or not having sex at all. 
“Just because you are a woman doesn't mean you can make choices that please you without caring a zilch about people around you. We have never taken responsibilities to protect and provide off men's shoulders so this whole freedom of choice to women just because they are women is nothing but asking freedom to do things that have always been labelled "wrong" when done by men. The effort seems to compete with men at any cost possible. Men and women are differently equal and never completely equal. Choices come with responsibilities. Hope young women realize that. Sex outside marriage isn't a choice but a mockery of relationship you "chose" to get into,” says Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, a young journalist and independent movie maker associated with the issue of fake charges under Section 498A, and we couldn’t agree more. 
 
While we appreciate the sentiments behind women independence, we believe that the video could have actually featured women from all walks of life, and focusing on real problems rather than the controversial demand that we discussed above. To add the portraits of 3-4 tribal women to hint their involvement (and approval) in the demands put forward in the video is misleading to say the least. 
 
Deepika has been winning hearts recently, with her powerful performances on screen and acceptance of suffering from depression in real life. In this video too, she has looked and spoken good, which was all she could have done on her part. Whatever lacks in the video demands a better attempt from the makers the next time, if not an explanation of sort for points like the ones we discussed above.

The Deepika Padukone Video: Vogue Or Vague?

When leading <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actress Deepika Padukone decided to star in the 2-minute short film on women equality, she would have barely thought that the film would irk many a people on social media despite being accepted and applauded by some. 
 
However, in a recent event, she broke her silence and said that the film was “the need of the hour.” 
 
"I think the generic reason would be that it is the need of the hour. I don't think we have made this film saying 'this film is for India'. I think we are facing this issue globally. And Homi has given me films like ‘Cocktail’ and ‘Finding Fanny’. He sees me very, very differently,” the actress was quoted saying. 
 
"The film wasn't my choice. It's sad that we have to sit and talk about gender equality in 2015. It's like a joke. So, any woman who breaks those barriers and lives on her own terms, like Deepika and my over-empowered wife (Anaita), I think that's the sign of it," said the director Homi Adajania, whose wife Anaita Shroff Adajania is the fashion director for Vogue India, the brand for which the video was made. 
 Titled ‘My Choice’, this is the third video in the <keyword id="2785822" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vogue-Empower">Vogue Empower</keyword> series. The earlier two videos had Alia Bhatt ('Going Home' directed by Vikas Bahl) and Madhuri Dixit ('Start With The Boys' directed by Vinil Mathew) giving out the message of gender equality and were received very well. 
 
The latest reaction on this video has come from Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha, who said at an event that “Women empowerment is not always about the kind of clothes you wear, not about who you want to have sex with or stuff like that. It's about employment, strength."

The star-studded premiere was held at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), here on Tuesday night. <keyword id="6359862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="srk" source="Orion">SRK</keyword>'s daughter <keyword id="543349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suhana-khan" source="Orion">Suhana Khan</keyword>, who is making her much awaited acting debut with the movie '<keyword id="12509997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-archies" source="Orion">The Archies</keyword>', was seen coming to the event with her family. She looked breathtaking in a blood red body con shimmer dress. With her hair open, red lips, and golden high heels, Suhana won the hearts with her glamorous look. She was accompanied by her father and superstar SRK, who was seen in an all black outfit. The 'Pathaan' actor wore a black coat, matching trousers, and a tee shirt with Archies imprinted on it. Suhana's mother Gauri looked beautiful in a black cut out dress. While her brother-Aryan and AbrRam were also present at the venue. 'Jawan' director Atlee graced the red carpet with his wife Krishna Priya. The couple was dressed in black outfits. Ranbir was accompanied by his mother Neetu Kapoor. He wore a silver coat, navy blue pants, and a white shirt. He completed the look with red striped tie, and brown formal shoes. The 'man of the hour' Bobby Deol, who is winning love for his performance in the recently released movie 'Animal', was seen at the event wearing a silver shirt and white trousers. She was accompanied by her sister Isabelle Kaif. Hrithik was spotted with his girlfriend Saba Azad at the event. He wore a black half sleeves shirt, grey trousers, and a bucket hat. While Saba gave retro vibes in a pink crop top and matching floral skirt. Ranveer Singh was seen in his usual funky style, wearing a white coat, shirt and black pants. Mumbai, May 4 () Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Madhuri Dixit Nene among others turned signers for a digital concert to raise funds for the frontliners working round-the-clock to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the country.Facebook collaborated with some of the biggest names in Indian entertainment industry and Hollywood names like Mick Jagger, Will Smith and Sophie Turner to put together a home-to-home fundraiser concert, 'I For India' on Sunday.The line-up was introduced by filmmakers Karan Johar and Zoya Akhtar, with Akshay Kumar kick-starting the concert with a poem penned by lyricist Manoj Muntashir, titled "Tumse Ho Nahi Payega."It was followed by Aamir and his director-wife Kiran Rao, who said it was important in current times to extend support to the needy."But most importantly, to not leave hope," Aamir said, urging people to donate for the frontline workers. The duo then sang classics such as "Aa Chalke Tujhe Main Leke Chalun" and "Jeena Isika Naam Hai".Shah Rukh closed the concert with a song composed by rapper Badshah and penned by lyricist Saini. Titled "Sab Sahi Ho Jayega", the song is about the perils of being locked up inside homes and the hope that sooner or later the world will be coronavirus free. "Everybody who knows me knows that I cannot sing to save my life. So thank you for taking a chance on me, everybody.
