According to a report by Counterpoint Research, domestic shipments of smartphones reported a decline of 8% in Q3 2022 on a year-on-year basis. The domestic shipments of smartphones declined to 52 million units in Q3 2022. The decline has been attributed to a decrease in consumer demand due to economic headwinds and geopolitical market uncertainties, such as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Reasons for decline" comment="subhead" text="Reasons for decline">Reasons for decline</cmsannotation> “The Made in India smartphone shipments declined in Q3 2022 as compared to Q3 2021. The primary reason Singh gives is the decline in consumer demand, especially in the entry-level segment, due to adverse macroeconomic indicators. Singh also expects an uptick in local production due to the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and partnerships between Indian and foreign companies. “Further, we will continue to see PLI disbursements in subsequent quarters, which will add to the local manufacturing landscape. Overall, the manufacturing trend is witnessing an upward trajectory with multiple partnerships happening in recent months, like the ones between Tata Group and Wistron and between Foxconn and Vedanta,” said Singh. In addition, the Indian government is also working on increasing the local value addition in the smartphone industry. “The government is actively pursuing the target of expanding the local value addition from the present 17-18% to 25% in the near future,” said Priya Joseph, research analyst, Counterpoint. Made in India smartphone shipments decline by 8% as consumer demand declines: Counterpoint

Flipkart, which has over the years, built private labels like MarQ, Perfect Homes, Billion and Smart-Buy, is looking to source accessories for its labels, from the country itself. “About two years back, almost 100% of our electronics came from China. Today, that number would be less than 50%. When we launched our furniture brand, the entire range was sourced from Malaysia – now that’s down to less than 50%,” Adarsh Menon, head of private label business at Flipkart, told ET. <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/retail/flipkart-approaching-electronic-brands-to-boost-private-label-business-says-report-3334891.htm">Flipkart</a> was has been in talks with Sansui, Nokia, Motorola, amongst others to build a private label business in electronics segment. In May, Flipkart <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/flipkart-puts-focus-back-on-private-labels-launches-in-house-sports-brand-119053000338_1.html">launched</a> an in-house sports brand called Adrenex. The brand has over 200 products ranging from sports accessories like cricket or tennis balls to gym equipment. These private labels also been raking in revenue for the company. According to <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/non-fashion-private-labels-account-for-13-of-flipkarts-gmv/67187116">reports</a>, six non-fashion private label brands from Flipkart account for 13% of its Gross Merchandise Volume. In 2018, the number of customers who opted for private labels also grew 17-fold, as per the report.

<ul><li>YouTuber <keyword id="8714903" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="technical-guruji">Technical Guruji</keyword> told Business Insider that the ban on TikTok was “long overdue,” after the Indian government announced the full list of 59 Chinese apps that will no longer be allowed to operate in the country.</li><li>TikTok influencers <keyword id="3206714" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paras-Tomar">Paras Tomar</keyword> and <keyword id="1317515" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadil-Khan">Aadil Khan</keyword> believe that even though TikTok is banned, brands will follow the influencer wherever they may go.</li><li>This isn’t the first time that TikTok has been banned in India and Tomar holds out hope that it will make a return after clearing things up with the government.</li></ul>The ByteDance-owned short video streaming app TikTok took India by storm when it launched in 2018 and it’s no stranger to being banned. Last year, the Madras High Court had the app banned for ‘encouraging pornography’ yet TikTok made its way back. “We saw it coming,” Paras Tomar, a TikTok influencer with over 3 million followers, told Business Insider. He says the anti-China sentiment was already visible with fans questioning why he was still creating videos on TikTok despite it being a Chinese app. This time around TikTok has gotten caught in political crossfire as tensions between India and China continue to escalate along the border. While 30% of users and 15% of its revenue may come from India, its the influencers on the platform that have a bigger burden to bear. To Tiktok or not to TikTok Love it or hate it, there’s no denying TikTok’s popularity. Bridging the digital divide was the prime driver of TikTok’s success in India. From January 2018 to August 2019, it was able to capture 30% of India’s smartphone users, according to data provided by Delhi-based market intelligence firm KalaGato. “Well, I think this was long overdue, I feel happy that finally, the Government took the right step in this direction,” said YouTuber Technical Guruji. However, not everyone is as amped about the change. “For actors, this just one thing we do. A lot of others actually left their jobs and stuff to do this. This is their income,” empathised Tomar. Being an influencer is a full-time job, from creating content to networking — investing time in a platform like TikTok does have an opportunity cost. But provided you have made a name for yourself on the platform and have the talent to back it up — India’s youth won’t find it difficult to move to another platform and generate employment, according to Aadil Khan, TikToker and choreographer with 2.8 million followers. ‘Made-in-India’ alternatives Following the ban of TikTok, Indian app alternatives saw a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/tiktok-ban-in-india-is-a-boon-for-rival-apps-chingari-bolo-indya-roposo-khabri-and-mitron/articleshow/76706001.cms">surge in the number of downloads</a>. <keyword id="40682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chingari">Chingari</keyword>, for instance, told Business Insider that the app was getting 100,000 downloads per hour. Others like Bolo, Indya, Khabri, and Roposo have also welcomed the ban in favour of an atmanirbhar — self-reliant — India. “Made in India apps will definitely gain momentum now, people are now addicted to the short term format. Wherever they find it, they are going to go on it,” said Khan. The catch is that, in comparison to TikTok, these Indian alternatives are still in their nascent stages. “Chingari is this new app so I tried to get a hold of it but the UI was so bad that it didn’t even let me create a username,” quipped Tomar after trying out the new platform. Khan believes it might be better with the government joins the bandwagon to create its own short-video format app where it can control the fact that no cringe content and “anything that goes against the country's peace and unity” isn’t uploaded. At the end of the day, it may not even be about shifting from one platform to the next. “I think we’ll all coexist on multiple platforms like we always have,” Tomar said. Will the brands follow? Brands need influencers just as much as influencers need brands. So wherever influencers may go next, brands are sure to follow. “Brands will move with them to other social media platforms. As long as you have created yourself an audience a genuine one, you will have them follow and love your content irrespective of the platform,” said Khan. However, what may take a hit is how much moolah an influencer can earn. “With two platforms, my cumulative reach becomes so much — that’s why we were charging a certain amount of money. Now the moment when you take one out of the two — and the bigger one of the two — it is going to take a hit,” explained Tomar. While Instagram and other social media platforms still exist, TikTok was — by far — the most active. “TikTok was very userfriendly, and for creators especially. Making content was easy, brands also approached you — they also pushed you. So, it was a very well-oiled machine so that everyone was happy with their roles,” said Tomar. He holds out hope that TikTok will make a comeback after it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/chinese-app-tiktok-says-it-will-meet-with-government-to-submit-clarifycations/articleshow/76703707.cms">talks to the Indian government</a>. The Chinese app said that it will be meeting with all the stakeholders to clarify any misnomers about data sharing abroad. “Until this is resolved, I’m not going to be on TikTok. Whether or not TikTok allows videos to be uploaded is secondary,” asserted Tomar. After a virtual conversation with Amit Agarwal, Global Senior Vice President of Amazon and Country Head for India and Chetan Krishnaswamy, Vice President, Public Policy of <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> on Wednesday, the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad took to Twitter and the homegrown social media platform Koo, to make the announcement. "Held a very good conversation with @AmitAgarwal and @Chetankrishna of @amazonIN today. Delighted to share that soon Amazon will commence manufacturing of electronics products like FireTV stick in India," Prasad said. Further, Amazon also has announced its plans to begin manufacturing Amazon Devices in India. In a blogpost, the company said that it will commence its manufacturing efforts with contract manufacturer Cloud Network Technology, a subsidiary of Foxconn in Chennai and start production later this year. As per the blog, the device manufacturing programme will be able to produce hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Stick devices every year. Amazon will continuously evaluate scaling capacity to additional marketplaces or cities depending on the domestic demand, it added. The minister during his conservation with the Amazon India executives also asked them to help in taking products made by India's artisans and Ayurvedic products to global markets through e-commerce. "@amazon is a global company but Amazon India must evolve as a truly Indian company deeply connected with Indian business community and culture," Prasad tweeted. Another tweet by the minister also said that the Ministry of IT is setting up several digital villages and Amazon India can pick up a few villages in India and develop them as fully digital villages. Amazon should also work with small local shops and make them a stakeholder in the larger efforts of Amazon to grow its business, he added. Agarwal said that Amazon is committed to partner with the Indian government to advance the vision of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. "Amazon is committed to partner with the Indian government to advance the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. We have pledged to invest US $1 billion to digitize 10 million small and medium businesses, help Indian businesses sell worldwide thereby enabling US $10B in cumulative exports, and create an additional 1MM jobs by 2025," he said.

Made in India battle royale game Indus trailer out: Here’s what to expect

Iyer added since more than 95% products are locally sourced, they are already partnering with the government in making Make-in-India initiative a success. 
 
As reported earlier, the government of India has allowed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-has-allowed-100-per-cent-FDI-in-food-ecommerce-and-a-warzone-has-already-been-formed/articleshow/52848943.cms">100% foreign direct investment</a> in food ecommerce, and would also open the avenues for grocery retailing industry if they sold goods sourced and produced locally.

While Foxconn is expected to spearhead iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max production in India, the <keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Group" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tata Group">Tata Group</keyword> and Pegatron are also expected to assemble the Pro models later this year. <h2>Domestic production to make iPhones cheaper</h2>While there is no confirmation from Apple, the report reveals that Apple will be able to meet the domestic demand for iPhones in India through locally assembled devices by the end of the year. This is expected to slightly bring down the prices of iPhones in the country. Apple is expected to export the bulk of the domestically produced Pro models of the iPhone 16 series to the US, Europe and the Middle East after meeting the local demand. Apple saw robust sales of around $8 billion in the country in FY24, an increase of around 33% year-on-year. Apple shipped over 10 million iPhones in 2023 in India, up from 6 million in 2022. The company recorded a 6% market share in the Indian smartphone market in 2023. Experts have said that there is a definitive trend of Apple attracting many first-time users for its newly launched iPhones in India, alongside the strong sales of previous-generation devices. The iPhone Pro models will be made in India for the first time this year

Maruti Suzuki is going to turn India into its global manufacturing hub for its upcoming premium compact car ‘Baleno’, which will debut in India on October 26. 
 
Suzuki, which has 56% stake in Maruti, will start exporting its upcoming ‘Baleno’ to over 100 countries, including Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, etc. 
 
This is Maruti Suzuki's first attempt in the premium compact segment and will make a. Baleno was unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will compete with Hyundai's Elite i20 and Honda's Jazz, among others. 
 
Baleno will have a 1.2litre petrol engine (manual and automatic variants) and 1.3-litre diesel engine. 
 
"Baleno has been developed for the global markets and India will be the exclusive manufacturing hub for the car," R S Kalsi, executive director (marketing and sales) at Maruti Suzuki, told TOI here. 
 
This will be a big achievement for the company and workers at Manesar factory said that it was a proud moment for them as a vehicle made at Indian facility will be sold in Japan. 
 
After S-Cross, Baleno will be the second car to be sold through Maruti's premium retail network 'Nexa'.

"I have used the SSI Mantra System on many of my patients. In its present form, the performance is quite good, and I could use the system for complex operations. Many more patients in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and around the world will benefit from this technology based on quality and cost-effectiveness," said Rawal. The surgical robot is modular, flexible and versatile in comparison to leading global surgical systems and has been developed within five years only. Dr Robot, made in India, will now perform surgeries at this cancer hospital

Industry body <keyword id="6355988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="assocham">Assocham</keyword> has identified 15 large import items for ramping up the country's domestic capacity to achieve the objective of Aatmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India in 2-3 years. These items include electronics, coal, iron-steel, non-ferrous metals and vegetable oils, among others. The analysis, based on the latest data, shows that the electronics goods are the largest non-oil import segment. Despite the country being under partial lockdown, India imported electronic goods worth USD 2.8 billion only in May, 2020. "In the circumstance of the industry operating in a normal way, these <keyword id="35091" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports">imports</keyword> are near about USD 5 billion a month - a huge drain on the forex which needs to be curtailed," Assocham said in a note. The chamber's Secretary General Deepak Sood said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's recent scheme of production - linked incentives and encouraging champions can be a game-changer if pursued vigorously. Both domestic and foreign direct investment should be encouraged in the endeavour. The Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for Large Scale Electronics offers incentives to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in mobile phone production and specified electronic components, including assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) units. The items of non-oil, non-gold imports with significant foreign exchange drain identified by the chamber include electronic goods, electrical and non-electrical machinery, iron and steel, inorganic and organic chemicals, coal-coke &amp; briquettes, and non-ferrous metals, artificial resins &amp; plastic, transport equipment, medicinal and pharmaceuticals. The other items in the list are vegetable oil, fertiliser, dyeing, tanning and colouring material, professional instruments and opticals, fruits and vegetables. "While we need to work on a long-term strategy to reduce our dependence on crude oil, in the short to medium term, we must move in a mission mode to be Aatmanirbhar in at least 15 of the critical sectors. "We should work on a twin track of not only investing more to ramp up capacity, but also ensure that the end-consumers get the best of the quality products at internationally competitive prices. Self-reliance in the real sense would mean an aggressive production and pricing strategy involving scale and speed of execution," Sood said.

In a recent internal mail, company founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Naveen+Tewari&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Naveen Tewari</a> spoke about how he was once at the verge of abandoning the idea of being an entrepreneur when his company was running out of money back in 2008. 
 
“I wasn't sure what to do. Tewari says he remembers waiting in the corridor of a famous VC’s office and wondering if he should just get up and leave. He had 14 rejections by then, and more were to follow. “None of the VCs were seeing the vision, and perhaps I wasn't able to communicate it well”, he accepts. 
 
The VC declined to invest. However, he said something Tewari says he’ll remember forever. 
 
“Building a product company out of India is impossible; it will take you a lifetime. There’s just not enough talent. Trying to build a mobile advertising company out of India is an even crazier idea.” 
 
The VC quit, Naveen didn’t.

On Rejection: 'Always wait for that one yes.’ 
As an entrepreneur, you’re going to get 100 rejections, and one yes. That one yes will give you enough and more kick in life to continue and remain motivated.

The kind of thing we are doing is different. Anything edgy won’t see instant success. 
 
That’s why one will have to learn to wait. You’re going to see a lot of failures. 
 
On Perseverance: ‘Failures don’t mean it’s not going to work.’ 
As long as you’re clear about your goal, failures don’t mean it’s not going to work. Wait for it. 
 
There will be things that won’t work and won’t sustain. That doesn’t mean you stop working on your ideas. You never do that. 
Persevere and have the grit to go after it. That’s why we exist today. 
 
Advice: ‘Stick to your guns.’ 
My idea of building a global company was something 98% VCs didn’t buy into initially. Today, we are 50x larger because we built a global company. 
 
A majority of our business is outside of India. This required a different kind of effort, focus and risk-taking ability. We stuck to our guns, and that’s how we made it.
