As against the two-year M.Tech program at IITs, the premier institutes are planning to execute M.Tech course for working professionals. 
 
A number of IITs are unable to retain their MTech students as they quit the course after landing jobs in public sector undertakings. In this regard, the M Tech programme could have more students complete their Masters. 
 
The move can help promote research work and increase revenue of IITs. IIT directors were seen discussing issues related to introducing executive MTech at the 155th meeting of IIT directors hosted by IIT-Kanpur last year in December. 
 
They feel there is no harm having sponsored MTechs by industry and the course could be charged for the actual cost. 
 
Curently, a number of IIMs and other B-schools already offer executive MBA programme for working professionals, but IIT's M.Tech course is the most cost-effective. Here's what the current M.Tech courses are offering. 
 
Compressed into a one-year programme, the executive M.Tech programme at IITs will be charged as per market rates. 
 
The final decision, however, is awaited. 
 
IIT directors of Bombay, Hyderabad and Roorkee are working out the details of this project. Once they reach a conclusion, the proposal will be sent to the IIT council, chaired by the HRD minister, for final approval.

A New Executive Course for Working Professionals may soon find a place in IITs

For admission to the B.Tech, BS and the B.Tech – M.Tech dual degree courses, the candidates must have scored competitively in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. To be able to apply for the B.Des. course, the candidates could have passed their 10+2 examination from any stream. The admission to B.Des. Course is based on the candidate’s performance in the UCEED examination. How to join PG courses in IIT Bombay For entry into the M.Tech and M.Tech – Ph.D. dual degree programs, the applicants must have got a B.E. / B.Tech / B.Sc. (Engineering) or other degrees that are equivalent to them in the branch relevant to the course they are applying for. For eligibility, the candidates must have scored more than 60% marks in their UG course. In addition, the admission to the M.Tech and M.Tech – Ph.D. courses will be based on the candidates’ score in the GATE examination. Those candidates who have got graduated from a relevant UG stream scoring over 55% marks can apply to the IIT, Bombay for joining the M.Sc. and M.Sc. – Ph.D. courses. Further to this, the admission to these courses will also be based on the performance of the candidates in the IIT JAM examination. For applying for the M.Des. course, the candidates must have graduated from a UG course in any one of the disciplines including Engineering, Architecture, Design or Interior Design or other equivalent programs that run for four years after completing the 10+2 examinations. Admission to the M.Des. course will be based on the score the candidate has got in the CEED examination. Those candidates who have graduated from a UG course scoring more than 60% marks can apply for M.Mgt. and EMBA courses offered by the IIT Bombay. While IIT Madras clocked in 100% placements, IIT Jodhpur says that they have successfully placed 97% of BTech, 75% of our MTech and 100% of their MBA students. At IIT Madras, maximum job opportunities were available in the consulting and analytics space. These scholarships are offered every year to financially support less privileged students from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) schools who qualify to these prestigious engineering colleges, the company said in a statement. The programme offers a scholarship of up to Rs 2 lakh for expenses related to tuition, examination, hostel and mess for one academic year and it can be renewed every year up to 5 years. Started in 2016, Samsung Star Scholar programme, now in its fifth year, has so far benefitted 650 JNV students. "Samsung Star Scholar programme is an extension of this effort and we are very pleased that this year despite the challenges on the ground, we have been able to reach out to these gifted students," said Peter Rhee, Corporate Vice President and Deputy Managing Director, Samsung India. Under this annual programme, the company offers scholarships to meritorious students pursuing full-term B. Tech/Dual Degree (B.Tech and M.Tech) course at any IIT or NIT. This year, the programme has granted 150 scholarships to new applicants from JNVs, of which 85 will begin their journey across 14 different IITs and 65 at 15 different NITs across the country. According to the company, scholarships for 367 students currently pursuing full-term B.Tech/Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) have been renewed for the next year. Recipients of renewed scholarships include 175 second year students, 94 third year students and 97 fourth year students. Also, Samsung India and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti partnership began in 2013 with the 'Samsung Smart Class' programme which was aimed at providing quality education for children from rural backgrounds. At present, the 'Smart Class' programme is operational at 683 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools. So far, over 430,000 students have benefitted from it and over 8,000 teachers have been trained on how to use interactive technology to teach. <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>), which is India’s largest software services firm, has partnered with four colleges so that it can offer courses in Big Data. The move is a part of its strategy to strengthen its pool of workforce in Indian digital technology space. 
 
The four colleges are Swami Vivekananda University (West Bengal), St Xaviers College of Arts and Science (Ahmedabad), Central University of Rajasthan (Rajasthan) and St Joseph's College (Bengaluru). TCS will offer M.Sc programme, with a specialisation in Big Data, and the course would start from July 2016. 
 "The digital revolution is being led by data and TCS is leading in that area. We have already trained 1.2 lakh employees in this area in less than a year's time. We will be partnering with these colleges on the curriculum and the faculty will also be trained by us," said TCS VP &amp; Head BPO HR <keyword id="2368168" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ranjan-Bandyopadhyay">Ranjan Bandyopadhyay</keyword>. 
 
He also added that the programme would be of 2 years duration, carrying 4 semesters, out of which 1 semester would be for internship. 
 
"There is a shortage of manpower in areas like Big Data and that is a need that we are looking at meeting," he said. 
 
Students who have graduated in courses like statistics, economics, mathematics and econometrics will be eligible for applying for this course. Each college would have about 30 students for this course. 
 
"For next year, we are looking at partnering engineering colleges to add Big Data to MTech courses and go big from year three. We have seen a lot of enthusiasm from students for these courses," he said.

Chennai, Feb 21(): IT major Verizon India has inked apact with Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, toprovide opportunities in the field of engineering to studentsliving in rural areas.    According to the programme '1Lab-1School', IIT-Madras isconnecting top graduate laboratories to high schools of ruralTamil Nadu, a press release said.    The initiative is fully funded by Verizon India as part ofits commitment to empower rural communities.    The '1Lab-1School', in its second year, has covered over800 students of 20 schools from Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram andVellore districts.    "1Lab-1School programme stands apart for its potential totransform science education in India in the long run," VerizonIndia MD Kalyani Sekar said.    "We are confident that the progamme makes quality scienceand technology education accessible for hundreds ofchildren," she said.    Under the initiative, mentor groups from IIT-MadrasResearch Labs comprising students of MS, MTech and Ph.D andfaculty from science and engineering department would adoptrural government higher secondary schools.    "A total of 20 research lab of IIT Madras has beenconnected to 20 rural schools since June 2018 with over 150graduate students from the institute having trained over 800students in the ninth grade," IIT Madras project lead andassociate professor, department of applied mechanics, PijushGhosh said.    "We would like the higher education community to take upsuch models and implement them in schools in their regions sothat together we can contribute towards the betterment andfuture of children in rural India," he said. Verizon India, IIT-Madras to train rural students

The premier technological education institutes, <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) is going international. No not by expanding the campuses but inviting foreign nationals to be a part of the programmes. As planned, IITs will be holding entrance examinations outside India and there would be a 10% additional seats to accommodate foreign students. 
 
"Foreign candidates will have to qualify the JEE advanced examination for an IIT seat. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for entry to MTech courses will be held in these six countries as well," an official informed the Economic Times. Foreign candidates, however, will not have to take the JEE main examination. 
 
The official clarified that the there would be no decrease in the number of the seats for Indian students. "The 10% intake is in addition to the existing seats available in each of the 23 IITs,” he added. 
 Also, 20,000 more candidates will be eligible to write the exam after clearing JEE main, thus taking the total number to 2,20,000. The examination will be held in six countries outside India - Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Nepal and <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword>. The number of foreign students can't exceed 10% of the total seats in each course offered by the IITs and ISM-Dhanbad, as per the news report on the ET. There is no quota in this category. Also the cut-off for the aggregate marks in Class XII for SC and ST candidates has been reduced from 70% to 65% in JEE advanced 2017. 
 
Increase in fees Candidates who register for entrance exams after due date would be allowed to fill up the forms after paying a late fee of Rs 500. There has been an increase in registration fee from Rs 1,200 from Rs 1,000 for girls and reserved category students and to Rs 2,400 from Rs 2,000 for others. Students coming from <keyword id="8470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAARC">SAARC</keyword> countries will need to pay $135 (Rs 9000) and those from the other countries would pay $270 (Rs 18000).

And, a majority of them were pursuing either postgraduate courses or doctoral programmes. “The reasons may be attributed to shifting to other colleges, personal reasons, medical reasons, placement during PG courses and pursuing higher education abroad,” Union minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank told the Rajya Sabha during a recent session in the Parliament. Every year, the IITs enroll 17,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bad health, bad grades The undergraduates are dropping out due to poor academic performance and medical reasons. Almost half of the students, 1,400 of them, who quit are from <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>’s Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. Masters students however could be quitting as they are being offered jobs at state-owned firms, especially in Delhi. “On some occasions, we saw 60 students drop out from an M.Tech batch of 80. Then, we were forced to run the programme with just 20 students,” The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/2400-students-dropped-out-of-iits-in-2-years-nearly-half-were-sc-st-obc/268626/">reported</a> citing Dheeraj Sanghi, a professor at IIT Kanpur. At least half of the students who dropped out, 1,171 students were reserved categories including SCs, STs and OBCs. At IIT Bombay, all of its 260 dropouts were from the reserved quota.
