Accordingly, DIPAM (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) has begun auction of BSNL and MTNL assets. The monetisation commenced with the auction of first set of six properties belonging to the telecos. "Non core asset monetisation commences with the first set of six properties of BSNL/MTNL bid out on the MSTC portal," DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey tweeted on Saturday. As per DIPAM website, asset monetisation involves creation of new sources of revenue by unlocking of value of hitherto unutilised or under-utilised public assets. Centre begins auction of BSNL, MTNL assets

<keyword id="399377" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahanagar-Telephone-Nigam-Limited">Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited</keyword> (<keyword id="28256" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MTNL">MTNL</keyword>) rolled out a mobile application for Android smartphones users, using which customers can lodge service complaints, pay bills and book new connection, as per a PTI report. 
 As a part ‘Good Governance Day’ celebrations, the mobile app was launched by <keyword id="46149" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-minister">Telecom Minister</keyword> Ravi Shankar Prasad. 
 
"MTNL launched an Android-based application, which will help in meeting objectives under Good Governance. Through this app, customer will be able to access MTNL services without need for visiting the MTNL office," according to a statement issued by the telecom firm. 
 
The state-run telecom firm has also announced with free one month broadband rental scheme along with Jodi plan for pre-paid customers. 
 
Under broadband rental scheme, customers can buy MTNL broadband connection till January 26, and they need not pay first month rental for scheme priced at and below Rs 999. 
 
On the other hand, under Jodi plan, the telecom firm has announced that a pre-paid users can opt for one more MTNL pre-paid number within same city. Calls made between these two numbers will be charged 20 paise per minute as compared to 40 paise a minute otherwise, the news agency added. 
 
MTNL also added that Jodi plan customers will also be given free 100 minutes of local calls on its network and 200MB of mobile Internet usage.

(Eds: Adding more details) New Delhi, July 1 () State-owned BSNL on Wednesday cancelled a multi-crore tender for 4G telecom network upgrade after the government asked the firm not to use any Chinese equipment. The move comes against the backdrop of a growing clamour against Chinese goods and services after the violent clash at border with China. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on Wednesday issued a notice for cancellation of the 4G tender. A source privy to the development told that a new tender will be floated which will have emphasis on preference to Make in India. BSNL Chairman could not be reached for comments. "Tender for planning, engineering, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and annual maintenance of 4G mobile network in north, east, west and south zones of BSNL and Delhi and Mumbai LSA of MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd) on turnkey basis...issued on March 23, 2020 is hereby cancelled," BSNL notice said. The notice for cancellation has been "issued with the approval of competent authority", it added. Meanwhile sources said that government had earlier directed BSNL not to use Chinese equipment in 4G upgrade, and implementation of the direction meant that the company has to issue a new tender. Keeping in view the developing Indian capacity and in-house technology, a new tender will be floated, the source said adding this will have emphasis on preference to Make in India. Nearly a fortnight ago, the telecom department had asked state-owned BSNL and MTNL to shun the use of Chinese telecom equipment in their 4G upgrade, underlining a hardening of stance in the backdrop of tensions at the India-China border. On June 29, India banned 59 apps with Chinese links, including hugely popular TikTok and UC Browser, saying they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country. The ban, which came in the backdrop of current stand-off along the border in Ladakh with Chinese troops, is also applicable for WeChat and Bigo Live. The list of apps that have been banned also include Helo, Likee, CamScanner, Vigo Video, Mi Video Call – Xiaomi, Clash of Kings as well as e-commerce platforms Club Factory and Shein. This marks the largest sweep against the Chinese technology companies. The Information Technology Ministry statement had cited many complaints received from various sources, including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for "stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India". New Delhi, Apr 17 () Reliance Jio on Friday said that most of the mobile recharge outlets will be available from April 20 onward, and customers who have not been able to recharge their account during the lockdown will continue to get incoming calls on their phones.The company on March 31 had announced that users will continue to receive incoming call even after expiry of the prepaid account during the difficult situation developed due to spread of coronavirus infection."Majority recharge outlets will be available starting 20th April," Jio said, adding that customers can do recharge through online payment platforms, bank ATMs and also through associate programmes.The company has come up with JioPos Lite app which its customers can download and recharge account of other subscribers on the network. The customer who recharges the account of others will get commission of around 4 per cent.Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have also come up with similar cash back or commission-based recharge service through app.These two firms have announced extension of prepaid validity till May 3 for customers who have not been able to recharge their accounts.Around 9 crore customers of Vodafone Idea and 3 crore of Bharti Airtel will continue getting free incoming calls till then.The government announced nationwide lockdown starting March 24 till April 14. JioFiber, Airtel offers to help you work from home during the Coronavirus pandemic

New Delhi, Apr 17 () Reliance Jio has introduced a new system to enable its subscribers to recharge the account of any customer on its network through a mobile app and also earn around 4 per cent commission. The development comes at a time when many people are unable to recharge their phones due to the lockdown. Telecom regulator Trai has been pushing service providers to extend the validity of all prepaid connections during the period. Reliance Jio has launched the JioPOS Lite app on Google Play store, from where a customer can download it and start recharging the phone of any subscriber on its network. "There is a joining fee of Rs 1,000 but the company has waived it off as an introductory offer. Jio customers downloading this app will have to load a minimum of Rs 1,000 for the first time and thereafter they can load recharge for sale for a minimum value of Rs 200," a source told . The app has recorded over 5 lakh downloads till date. The source said this will give Jio customers a comfortable option to get their phones recharged even if shops are not opened during the lockdown period. The government has extended the lockdown period till May 3 to check the spread of the coronavirus. Private telecom operators had earlier extended the validity of prepaid accounts till April 17 to support people at the bottom of the pyramid stay connected during the lockdown. Vodafone Idea had announced extension of validity on prepaid plans availed by low-income customers using feature phones till April 17 and Rs 10 talktime credit. Bharti Airtel too had offered extension in the validity period of over 8 crore pre-paid connections until April 17 as well as credited Rs 10 talktime in these accounts. Reliance Jio had also offered its JioPhone users 100 minutes of free talktime and 100 free SMSes till April 17, while their incoming calls would continue even after the validity of their pre-paid vouchers. State-owned telecom operators BSNL and MTNL will extend the validity period of their prepaid mobile services till April 20 and offer Rs 10 additional talktime even after zero balance. The country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) ordered all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to implement a ban against 827 porn websites on October 27, 2018. Jio was the first internet service provider (ISP) to implement the ban, with Airtel, BSNL, MTNL, and Act Broadband following shortly after. While the companies are using a ‘master list’ to implement the ban, that list hasn’t been made public yet. And despite the Indian government’s best efforts, people have already found ways around it. Skirting the law People are being able to use Alibaba’s UC Browser to open porn sites on the Jio network. UC Browser is the same app that was under the lens for leaking Indian user data last year. UC Browser is also the second most used web browser in India after Google Chrome, according to StatCounter’s data, with a market share of more than 32%. Users can even apply the Opera browser, which has a built-in VPN, to circumvent the government’s ban. Even Pornhub, one of the most popular portals for watching porn according to Alexa’s most visited IPs in India, launched an altered URL so that its Indian users could still have access to the site. Their vice president, Corey Price, has argued, “The ban could lead people to visit ‘risky porn sites’ that may contain illegal content.” So using any method to get around the ban should be done at your own risk — like using HTTPS ahead of the site’s URL instead of HTTP and WWW. It’s probably the oldest hack in the book that came to light when torrent sites like ThePirateBay and KickassTorrents were blocked in India. Using an alternate server — which can be easily changed by going into your computer’s ‘network settings’ — like the Google DNS servers instead of the ones prescribed to by the ISPs is more a more complicated way of navigating to the porn sites. Not the first time Porn websites are the some of the most trafficked in the world, and India is the world’s third largest porn-watching nation. This is not the first time that the Indian government has attempted to take on internet porn. It tried to ban porn sites for the first time in November 2014. But rather than being limited to some 800 websites, it was a blanket ban on porn, with the government attempting to take on 40 million porn websites globally. The current ban was filed in 2015 with 857 porn sites on the roster. But, it had to lifted in under a week. The reason was simple: The bulk of online traffic in India is driven by porn websites, and the ban was harming telecom operators. In fact, porn drives as much as 70% of India’s website traffic, according to sources speaking to LiveMint. Ahead of the 2019 Indian general elections, the government is taking a risky stance on the freedom of communication. The last time around, it was forced to not only lift the ban, but also come out against censorship. For many Indians, this move by government is another in a long line of intolerant directives with the government cracking down on their freedom of expression.
