<strong><br /></strong><ul><li><strong>Authorities in the Indian city of Thane raided the offices of the <keyword id="6591672" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Money-Trade-Coin">Money Trade Coin</keyword> (<keyword id="49524" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MTC">MTC</keyword>) on Monday. </strong></li><li><strong>MTC advertises itself as a ‘safer’ and ‘superior alternative’ of storing wealth. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>But, to the contrary, complaints have surfaced about MTC being a front for international fraud.</strong></li></ul>When 2,500 people invest in a supposed <keyword id="6357017" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cryptocurrency">cryptocurrency</keyword> and in turn lose anywhere between ₹3 billion ($45 million) to ₹5 billion ($74 million), one can’t help but wonder whether or not the regulation would be a boon. But what it surely will do is provide clarity between legit ventures and fraudulent ones. <br /><br />Cryptocurrencies have never been considered to be a <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/why-is-the-cryptocurrency-market-so-volatile-expert-take">‘stable’</a> financial asset, but add fraud into the mix and things can get really complicated. And, that’s exactly what <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/police-forces-bust-alleged-new-age-cryptocurrency-scam-in-india/">happened</a> in Thane, a city that lies on the periphery of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. <br /><br /><strong>The cryptocurrency racket<br /></strong><br />Amit Lakhanpal, in collusion with four other people, launched a cryptocurrency called Money Trade Coin (MTC) at an Initial Coin Offering (<keyword id="236078" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICO">ICO</keyword>) in <keyword id="6354539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dubai">Dubai</keyword>. An ICO, in its essence, is similar to an Initial Public Offering (IPO) when a company goes public. <br /><br />MTC was initially valued at $3 (₹200) when it launched in 2017 with Lakhanpal <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/police-forces-bust-alleged-new-age-cryptocurrency-scam-in-india/">allegedly</a> promising investors a 20-fold return on their buy-in within six months according to Param Bir Singh, the police commissioner in Thane. <br /><br />Soon enough, he raised the value of MTC to $6,000 (₹401,472). Cumulatively, with 2,500 people in the mix, that amounts to ₹5 billion. But, there was no way for them to sell any of the cryptocurrency or even make limited withdrawals.<br /><br />So, basically, people made an investment but couldn’t get to their returns, or even the principal amount. <br /><br />In fact, the scam only caught the attention of the authorities when a businessman and his colleagues finally complained that they could no longer get a response from the company with respect to their investments.<br /><br />According to the police, it was easy for Lakhanpal to get away with the scheme due to the portfolio he had created for himself, including a fake degree from an international university. Apparently, he launched a magazine that highlighted ‘inspirational quotes’ and images of famous celebrities as well as a book on cryptocurrency, which added to his profile.<br /><br />The <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) may be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-cryptocurrency-exchanges-looking-for-leeway-from-rbi/articleshow/64453526.cms">imposing</a> a blanket ban on cryptocurrency exchanges, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the people won’t participate if the opportunity were to present itself. That being said, the uncertainty and <a href="https://factordaily.com/cryptocurrency-last-legal-stand-in-india/">lack of clarity</a> on where the government of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> stands on the issue creates a problem. <br /><br />It’s not about whether to invest or not, but rather about whether or not it will create more of a controversy if its reported, for the victims.<br />

Police bust an alleged ₹5 billion cryptocurrency scam in India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Autumn Eliza Sheffy spent five months living and performing on a German cruise ship in 2022.</li><li>Since she performed at night, she spent the days exploring new countries and hanging with coworkers.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Autumn Eliza Sheffy, a 26-year-old who spent nearly five months aboard a cruise ship as a musical theater performer. It has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>Not long after I accepted a job as a musical-theater performer aboard the <a target="_blank" href="https://aida.de/schiffe/aidaluna">AIDAluna</a><em>, </em>a luxury cruise ship based in Germany and owned by Carnival Cruise Lines, I had second thoughts.</p><p class="MsoNormal">I watched a series of YouTube videos devoted to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-on-cruise-ship-full-time-residents">cruise-ship life</a> in preparation for my months at sea. One minute I was learning what to pack, and the next, I'd fallen down a rabbit hole and was watching clips about the Titanic and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-costa-concordia-two-years-later-2014-1">Costa Concordia</a>, a luxury cruise liner that capsized in 2012 after going off course and hitting a rock, killing 32 passengers.</p><p class="MsoNormal">This left me doubting my decision to leave my fiancé and our Connecticut home behind and head overseas to Germany. I also didn't speak German.</p><p>But despite my misgivings, I flew to Hamburg for a weeklong seafarer training for new crew members in June 2022. This was a requirement before I was allowed to set sail on what would be my new home for nearly five months.</p><h2><strong>How I got the job</strong></h2><div type="image" title="a woman performing" height="3648" width="4864" msid="105991828" hostid="261" sizebytes="532042"></div><p>Every spring, performers from all over the world audition for a spot as an entertainer aboard one of AIDA's 13 passenger ships. My audition was in New York City.</p><p class="MsoNormal">I performed two songs and a one-minute dance and returned two days later to sing two more songs.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The day after my callback, my phone rang, and I got a job offer — with a slight twist.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Instead of a standard six-month contract, my offer was to replace a performer who'd gotten sick and whose contract got cut short. The cast had already been performing together for almost a month and a half, so I'd have to learn everything on my own.</p><p>Initially, the thought of playing catch-up was pretty daunting, but I accepted the position and two weeks later, I made my way to the MTC Marine Training Center Hamburg GmbH.</p><h2>The training was comprehensive</h2><p>We practiced maneuvers, including climbing down the side of a ship in case of an emergency. There's also an indoor pool where we learned how to float, get inside a raft, and safely connect people in the event of a water evacuation.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-liner-launch-msc-explora-delayed-faulty-fire-panels-report-2023-7">Fire is a major concern on cruise ships</a>, so knowing what to do in these instances is crucial, considering no firefighters are on board. There are no police officers on the ship either, but there are security personnel who typically have law-enforcement or military experience.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In emergencies, we're the ones responsible, which is why all crew must undergo this training. Then, once they begin working on the ship, all crew members must do weekly safety drills for up to two hours.</p><p>Luckily, there were no emergencies while I was on board.</p><h2>Packing the essentials</h2><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-ships-with-nicest-cabins-cruisecritic-2019-7">Our cabins</a> are essentially metal boxes, so magnets come in especially handy because you hang everything in your room from clothing to towels to photos.</p><p class="MsoNormal">I packed a hard drive full of downloaded movies and TV shows, my acoustic guitar, a chord book since I'm still learning to play, my iPad filled with books, a camera, tarot cards, coloring books, and pencils, which come in handy during long days at sea.</p><p class="MsoNormal">I also brought a hanging shoe organizer to store sunglasses, face masks, letters from loved ones, and extra USB drives.</p><p>It tends to be very dry on ships, which is not ideal for singers, but humidifiers are a fire hazard. Instead, I came prepared with throat-coat tea, my tea mug, and lots of cough drops.</p><h2><strong>My cabin was reminiscent of Harry Potter's living quarters</strong></h2><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-live-work-remote-on-cruise-ship-full-time-2023-8">Living inside a small interior cabin</a> with no window felt like living inside a shipping container, but it's also oddly cozy. There's no sense of time. Normally, I'm claustrophobic, but I got used to it pretty quickly.</p><p>While lots of crew members live in shared quarters, often with bunk beds, I was fortunate enough to have a single cabin and only have to share a bathroom.</p><h2><strong>I only saw my fiancé once in 5 months</strong></h2><p>During my time at sea, I only saw my fiancé — now husband — when he joined me for a four-day cruise to celebrate his 30th birthday. Being apart for that long might not work for many couples, but he's a touring musician, so we're used to spending a lot of time away from each other.</p><p>There was crew WiFi on board, but FaceTime didn't work while the ship was moving, so while at sea, I relied on WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family. I used FaceTime while at ports. Occasionally, our WiFi would go down, and I couldn't contact anyone.</p><h2><strong>Performing on a different level</strong></h2><p>Performing can be hard work, but performing on a stage in high heels during rough seas takes it to a new level.</p><p class="MsoNormal">It took me 12 days to learn all the shows. I prepared by memorizing all of the music and watching the shows on YouTube before boarding the ship.</p><p class="MsoNormal">COVID-19 was still prevalent, which meant performers constantly dropped in and out of shows and needed to quarantine. This led to us having to make last-minute show changes based on who was available. Sometimes that meant learning roles an hour before we took the stage.</p><p>Every night we did two back-to-back shows. We had four different shows in rotation and a finale and never repeated the same show twice during a trip.</p><h2><strong>What I did when I wasn't working</strong></h2><div type="image" title="a woman standing in front of a cruise ship" height="2268" width="3024" msid="105991834" hostid="261" sizebytes="257072"></div><p>Since I only worked in the evenings, on the days we visited ports, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/live-on-cruise-ship-for-free-what-its-like-2023-8">I'd always get off the ship and explore</a>. I got to visit Germany, Iceland, Scotland, Norway, and Denmark. It was always a bit nerve-wracking, though, because I wouldn't want to go too far and lose track of time.</p><p class="MsoNormal">On the ship, there was plenty for the crew to do when not working; crew bingo was a crowd favorite. There was also a small crew gym and a bar below sea level where we could buy drinks, hang out, play foosball, and celebrate crew birthdays.</p><p>Most of the time after performing, I'd head back to my cabin and go to bed to rest my voice for the next day.</p><h2><strong>Working at sea was unlike any job experience I've ever had</strong></h2><p>I missed my friends and family, but meeting people from all over and traveling the world was a real gift. It gives you a great perspective on life.</p><p class="MsoNormal">My time on the ship ended in October 2022. I now run Sheffy Stage Company, where I direct and produce, and I do paralegal work.</p><p>I'm always auditioning and recently, I recently auditioned to join another cruise-ship cast, so if everything works out, I might be living at sea again.</p>

By Namita Tewari Gumla (Jharkhand), A Jharkhand district known for its extreme poverty and Naxalite insurgency is now witnessing a silent revolution centering around snacks made from a type of millet which can help prevent <keyword id="6378239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malnutrition" source="Orion">malnutrition</keyword>. The new agro-industry coming up in this backwoods district is an initiative of a young bureaucrat Sushant Gaurav who says he would like Gumla to be the Ragi capital of eastern India. <br /><br />Tucked away some 100 km from state capital Ranchi, his work in Gumla has been selected for the Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Public Administration that recognises exemplary work by civil servants across the country. <br /><br />Previously Gumla's economy revolved around rain-fed agriculture with the cultivation of one crop rice. <br /><br />Ragi cultivation was initiated with procurement of high quality seeds through the National Seed Corporation, Deputy Commissioner Sushant Gaurav told PTI in an interview. <br /><br />"From an initial cultivation of Ragi in 1,600 acres, it was increased to 3,600 acres. Net output increased 300 per cent... What helped in the success story is procurement by Sakhi Mandal Samuh (women self help group). <br /><br />"We established a Ragi processing centre which is the first in Jharkhand. Ragi Laddus, Bhujia snacks and flour are being produced which help battle malnutrition and anaemia (as it is rich in protein, calcium and iron)," Gaurav said. <br /><br />Gaurav will receive the award on Friday in the "holistic development through aspirational district programme - overall progress with special focus on saturation approach" category at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. <br /><br />This is the first time that a Jharkhand district has been selected for the award. <br /><br />Exuding confidence, Gaurav said, "We will transform this aspirational district to a transformational and inspirational one." <br /><br />The deputy commissioner said, "The success story of the production, procurement and processing of Ragi spread and more and more people have come forward to cultivate the grain. It is on 26,000 acres (an increase of ten times) of land now instead of rice... and will be 30,000 acres by the month end." <br /><br />"People gave proposals for Ragi cultivation... I view this change in just two years as the success which I wanted. We will make Gumla the Ragi capital of the whole eastern India in a year or so and strive for the success of agriculture from farm to fork." <br /><br />Ragi processing centres owned and operated by only women ensure a daily production of 1 tonne of Ragi flour, 300 packets of Ragi Laddus and 200 packets of Ragi snacks under the Brand Johar Ragi. <br /><br />The laddus made of Ragi are being provided to children to fight malnutrition besides 'saag and vegetables' from identified 52 types - mainly moringa powder and curry leaves - in mid-day meals to boost nutrition at a very affordable cost, the DC said. <br /><br />Avinash Kumar, Mahatma Gandhi National Fellow, Ministry of Skill Development, Government of India, who made a case study presentation at Harvard Business School on behalf of the deputy commissioner said the institute is doing a case study on the Gumla model that will be circulated among international business schools and will be used for training bureaucrats. <br /><br />The deputy commissioner said a door-to-door survey was done among school children, and lactating mothers and they were identified for "severe, moderate and medium anaemia and malnutrition for which preventive and curative measures were taken. <br /><br />"A multi-pronged approach was adopted to combat anaemia, aiming to address and identify it at a very early stage among pregnant and lactating mothers and adolescents. <br /><br />"Over 400 model anganwadi centres were set up equipped with digital haemoglobin-meters, height growth charts, innovative blue MTC (malnutrition treatment card) and follow-up cards," the deputy commissioner said. <br /><br />"Fitness of children has improved. Snacks, self-help groups & a ragi revolution in Jharkhand village becomes Harvard case study

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Internal emails obtained by the Los Angeles Times showed ICE rushing to release deathly ill detainees.</li><li>In a wrongful death lawsuit, the <keyword id="12034502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aclu" source="Orion">ACLU</keyword> claims that ICE has repeatedly served parole papers at hospitals.</li></ul><p>Over the last few years, <keyword id="11940510" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="immigration" source="Orion">Immigration</keyword> and Customs Enforcement officials have released ill immigrant detainees days before their eventual deaths, according to internal emails newly obtained by the Los Angeles Times.</p><p>The American Civil Liberties Union also filed a <a href="https://www.aclu.org/legal-document/aclu-files-foia-lawsuit-against-ice">sweeping lawsuit</a> in 2021 on behalf of the families of immigrants detained by ICE who claim their relatives had rushed releases due to illness.</p><p>The 16,000 documents obtained by the LA Times are part of the outlet's <a href="https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2020-12-01/la-times-sues-for-federal-records-on-abuse-claims-ice-centers">ongoing public records lawsuit against the agency</a>. The outlet says the documents highlight a pattern of the agency skirting responsibility for immigrants in poor health housed in government facilities as well as contracted facilities.</p><p>Johana Medina Leon, a transgender immigrant and nurse technician from El Salvador, was initially held in the <a href="https://www.ice.gov/detain/detention-facilities/otero-county-processing-center">Otero County Processing Center</a> in New Mexico and her health plummeted a month after being detained, according to the LA Times report.</p><p>Medina Leon had marked her requests for help as "urgent," per the LA Times.</p><p>It took close to six weeks for Medina Leon to get access to medical care to treat what was later revealed as sepsis in an autopsy. When Leon finally had access to a doctor, she was discharged from the facility in less than six hours, emails showed.</p><p>According to the LA Times, on May 28, 2019, ICE's field medical coordinator gave the go-ahead to release the sick inmate. </p><p>"If this detainee were to become further seriously ill there is a potential for a poor outcome," the official said in the email obtained by the LA Times. A second official chimed in, per the report, that her "vitals do not look good."</p><p>According to the report, Medina Leon was presented with her parole paperwork at the El Paso hospital that she was rushed to, and in the internal investigation into her death, an <keyword id="13198529" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ice-agent" source="Orion">ICE agent</keyword> noted that he had never released a detainee at a hospital.</p><p>By that evening, she was officially no longer in ICE custody, according to the emails. On June 1, Medina Leon died at the hospital. Management and Training Corporation, the private prison group which operates the Otero facility, told Insider in an email that "MTC follows federal HIPPA patient privacy laws and does not comment on specific medical cases."</p><p>"We take the medical care of detainees very seriously," the company added. "We adhere to ICE Performance-Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) including ensuring detainees have access to appropriate and necessary medical, dental, and mental health care, including emergency services. We further follow PBNDS standards for the prevention, screening, and treatment of infectious diseases."</p><p>According to a wrongful death lawsuit <a href="https://www.aclu.org/legal-document/aclu-files-foia-lawsuit-against-ice">filed by the ACLU</a> on behalf of Medina Leon and three other detainees, Medina Leon's rushed release was not the first time the agency rushed to release critically ill detainees so as to not inflate their deaths in detention figures.</p><p>At the time of Medina Leon's death, ICE <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/immigration/2019/06/03/transgender-woman-from-el-salvador-dies-in-texas-hospital-after-more-than-a-month-in-ice-custody/">said</a> they took detainee health seriously and that her death was "another unfortunate example of an alien who enters the United States with an untreated, un-screened medical condition."</p><p>ICE did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. ICE told the LA Times that the agency "takes very seriously the health, safety, and welfare of those in our care, including those who come into ICE custody with prior medical conditions or who have never before received appropriate medical evaluation or care."</p><p>In 2019, the year Leon died outside of ICE care, the agency reported nine deaths.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.ice.gov/detain/detainee-death-reporting">the agency's public data</a>, ICE reported 18 deaths in detention in 2020, and five the following year. In 2022, the agency claims that there have been no deaths in their facilities while factoring in the thousands of detainees under their watch and with <a href="https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/immigration-detention-and-covid-19">consistent COVID-19 outbreaks</a> in facilities.</p><p>The ACLU's lawsuit is seeking records about detainees in poor health who the ACLU believes may have had rushed releases, and is interrogating why the agency is "choosing to release people from custody who are on their deathbeds while they're hospitalized," ACLU attorney Eunice Cho told LA Times.</p><p>The ACLU did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>The class-action suit claimed that Martin Vargas Arellano, a 55-year-old booked in Adelanto, California, in 2020, alerted officials about his "diabetes, hypertension, gout, and hepatitis C," asking for a release because he was immunocompromised and worried about COVID-19.</p><p>According to the lawsuit, he contracted COVID-19 in March 2021 and had a stroke at the detention facility. He was then transferred to a local hospital, still in ICE custody. </p><p>Three days before he died in the hospital, ICE served him his release papers. Arellano was also not counted in ICE's deaths in detention for the year and the agency did not notify his family or attorney of his death, according to LA Times. </p><p>His family and attorney learned of his death after reaching out to the coroner's office and filing a missing person's report.</p>

<br /> Former Defense Minister Antony’s Moscow visit in October 2007 to co-chair the annual session of <keyword id="2585279" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="India-Russia-Inter-Governmental-Commission">India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission</keyword> on military-technical cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) marked the start of FGFA project with the aim to induct the futuristic stealth fighter by 2016-17. The $295-million preliminary design contract signed in December 2010 was allocated for the 50:50 design and production agreement which was a mere part of the massive US $30 Billion project.<br />
<br /> The purpose of having the next generation FGFA is to execute a credible deterrence power and to attain independence is developing the indigenous technology under the transfer of technology agreement. Why waste so much money on an older 4th generation plane, when we can divert that money to develop Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and the advanced LCA <keyword id="6376012" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tejas">Tejas</keyword>.<br />

The IAF currently maintains 34 squadrons of 550+ fighters while the sanctioned number is 42 squadrons. This reduced capacity can have serious outcomes if it faces a two front war situation given the multiple threats that India perceives.<br />

Regular reports of differences between the joint development parties over design and work agreements are further pushing the trial and induction of the fighters. Earlier it was expected to induct the fighters by 2016-17 but the delays and cost-overruns are pushing the dates towards 2019-2020, however prototypes will be coming soon.<br />

Area of concern and the possible outcome<br />

Reduced IAF's fleet strength means fewer aircraft have to perform more missions to get the work done. Imagine this situation in a two front war scenario. This is where India quickly needs to induct more locally built advanced version of Tejas fighters and more locally assembled Su-30MKIs which are top of the line 4++ generation fighters. On the lines of SU-30, India can take 20-25 of FGFA jets in fly away conditions and rest can be made under license. India has done remarkably well by cutting down the MMRCA deal to 36 Fighters and saved around 18 Billion USD which can be further pooled into the faster development of the Fifth generation fighters like FGFA and AMCA which will form the future force multipliers for the country.<br />
