Public relations giant MSL's plan to tackle the influencer pay gap

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The creator economy has a long way to go in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).</li><li>We want to hear from you on the top influencer management agencies led by people of color.</li></ul><p>Despite fears of an <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/us-recession-100-chance-within-year-inflation-fed-rate-hikes-2022-10">upcoming recession</a>, the creator economy is booming. Many on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are now earning <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-influencers-get-paid-on-instagram-tiktok-and-youtube-2021-7">six figures (or more) annually</a> through brand sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and other revenue streams.</p><p>As influencers build their brands, some of them have turned to influencer management agencies to help them navigate the industry. These agencies help clients organize their time, make decisions about which business opportunities to pursue, and earn a sustainable income from content creation. While some management firms and agencies are establishing broad client rosters, others are more focused on specific industries or follower counts.</p><p>Like every industry, the creator economy has a long way to go in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). <a href="https://mslgroup.com/whats-new-at-msl/msl-study-reveals-racial-pay-gap-influencer-marketing">A 2021 report</a> by by public relations network MSLGroup and The Influencer League revealed that the racial pay gap between white and Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) influencers is 29%, and that gap widens to 35% between white and Black influencers specifically. </p><p>As a result, people of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds are founding their own influencer management agencies to help more creators of color land lucrative deals and grow their businesses.</p><p>We are seeking nominations from readers — especially influencers and creator economy experts — on the top influencer management agencies that are BIPOC-led. </p><p>The list of top firms will be determined by Insider based on a mix of our reporting and the nominations that we receive. </p><p>Please submit your nominations through this<a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScODwIQUbNGs4JNcTdhb3ln-0Kjv0_O6z050mw4pMOp1ZZrWA/viewform?usp=sf_link"> Google form</a> by Friday, November 18, 2022.</p>

Seeking nominations for the top BIPOC-led influencer management agencies

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Kevin Roberts" title_caption="Kevin Roberts." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/4ede4605ecad045457000052-960/kevin roberts saatchi.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.saatchikevin.com/The_Unofficial_KR_Bio/">Kevin Roberts</a></span></p><p class="caption">Kevin Roberts.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Publicis Groupe paid nearly $3 million to settle a class-action gender discrimination lawsuit at its MSLGroup PR shop in New York in May 2016. </p><p>The settlement is, perhaps, part of the reason why Publicis reacted so quickly to remarks by Kevin Roberts, Publicis' head coach, about whether there was gender parity in the ad industry. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/kevin-roberts-on-women-in-leadership-roles-2016-7">Roberts told Business Insider</a>, "the fucking debate is all over. ... I can't talk about sexual discrimination because we've never had that problem, thank goodness."</p><p>The remarks triggered a negative reaction from staff inside Publicis, and Roberts was immediately placed on a "leave of absence" by the company. "Promoting gender equality starts at the top and the Groupe will not tolerate anyone speaking for our organization who does not value the importance of inclusion," the company said.</p><p>The discrimination suit had nothing to do with Roberts, who in addition to his role as head coach at Publicis is the chairman of Saatchi &amp; Saatchi.</p><p>The suit was a rare victory for women who believe they are underpaid or underpromoted in the PR business.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/publicis-sex-discrimination-lawsuit-2012-7">plaintiffs in the case alleged that 70% of Publicis' 45,000 PR executives worldwide are women</a>, but females occupied only 15% of the "leadership" positions. The case was filed in 2011 and covered several years of allegations.</p><p>Female employees covered by the suit received $2.875 million between them, with $197,500 going to 23 named plaintiffs, plus $1,000 for every pregnant employee in recognition that they should have been given an additional week of paid maternity leave. MSLGroup's North America president, Jim Tsokanos, stepped down after the suit was filed and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mslgroup-chief-steps-down-following-sex-discrimination-suit-2012-8">he was replaced by Renee Wilson</a>, MSL's then-chief client officer.</p><p>Publicis did not immediately return a request for comment on whether the settlement had anything to do with the suspension of Roberts.</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/saatchi-and-saatchis-kevin-roberts-placed-on-leave-after-saying-the-gender-diversity-in-advertising-debate-is-over-2016-7">An internal email sent to Publicis employees</a> condemned Roberts' remarks:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Kevin's remarks are wholly inconsistent with the beliefs and values of Publicis Groupe, and they are inconsistent with my own personal beliefs and values. Viva la Difference is not a line; it is who we are and how we behave. Publicis settled an unrelated sex discrimination lawsuit for $3 million two months before Kevin Roberts' remarks

I want to see action taken at the top and all the way through."</p><p><strong>8. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-gawker-ceo-nick-denton-will-file-for-personal-bankruptcy-2016-8">Gawker founder Nick Denton confirmed he will file for personal bankruptcy to prevent Hulk Hogan from seizing his assets.</a></strong> A judge awarded $140.1 million in damages to Hogan after the news site published a sex tape featuring the former wrestler.</p><p><strong>9. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/people-upset-about-sexist-gap-ad-2016-8">People are calling a Gap ad sexist.</a></strong> It features a girl with the label "social butterfly" and a boy with the label "the little scholar".
