The report stated that the <keyword id="20861069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-shift" source="keywords">global shift</keyword> towards a China+1 strategy and the impact of the <keyword id="20016971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia-Ukraine-war" source="keywords">Russia-Ukraine war</keyword> offer India additional opportunities to fill supply chain gaps, potentially boosting its share in the <keyword id="23046732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-defence-industry" source="keywords">global defence industry</keyword>. The report noted that the country's long-term goal is to become a global defence manufacturing hub is driven by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private enterprises, start-ups, and MSMEs. "Indian defence exports have grown multi-fold from INR 15 bn in 2017 to INR 210 bn in 2024 at a CAGR of 46%. The China + 1 strategy and the Russia-Ukraine war provides an additional opportunity for India to fill the gap created in the supply chain and hence increase its contribution to the global defence industry," the report read. The report added that to achieve this target a well-developed domestic ecosystem is crucial as lower import content in products accelerates approvals by reducing international conflicts. The report added that the Ministry of Defence has taken key initiatives to attract Indian private players and global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) include establishing aerospace parks and defence corridors, fast-tracking project approvals, and enhancing development and testing facilities. Highlighting the potential in India's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) segment the report explained that it holds a significant potential for global aerospace companies due to its technical expertise and cost-competitive solutions. "India provides a huge opportunity in the <keyword id="23046733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MRO-segment" source="keywords">MRO segment</keyword> for global aerospace leaders given the expertise the country provides as well as the cost efficiency solutions compared to its global competitors" the report added. India aims to increase domestic defence turnover to Rs 3 lac crore by 2029, Rs 500 billion targeted for exports. This growth will help reduce the Government of India's import bill as India remains the world's largest importer of defence equipment. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative of the government, 75 per cent of the defence capital outlay is now reserved for domestic players, up from 49 per cent in FY21. Given the geopolitical challenges and modernisation needs of its Armed Forces, the report added that India plans to invest Rs 8.3 lac crore in domestic procurement, offering substantial business opportunities for local companies. "India intends to place orders worth INR 8.3 trn through domestic procurement and thus it presents a massive business opportunity for local players" it added. As per the Ministry of Defence, India's defence manufacturing sector has witnessed an increase of 16.8 per cent in the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant increase marks the highest-ever growth in the country's defence production value. The total value of defence production reached Rs 1,26,887 crore this year, up from the previous year's figures.

While investment bankers are confident of the ‘high-quality business’ from the House of Tatas, analysts are backing the ₹3,042 crore issue due to its prospects, business model and mostly its pricing. The grey market is also the most optimistic it’s ever been in the recent past as it predicts 70% listing gains. The engineering research and development (R&amp;D) company offers product development and digital solutions to manufacturing companies. “Its areas of expertise include product engineering and manufacturing engineering in the mechanical domain such as body engineering, while it is adding capabilities in the software and embedded engineering segments,” says a report by Emkay. This market of global outsourced ER&amp;D market was estimated to be around $105-110 billion in 2022. Moreover, the digital engineering market is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16% between 2022 to 2026. Auto to EV to aviation The subsidiary of <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword> is heavily focussed on the auto sector where it gets 75% of its revenues from. But its turnkey solutions can also be used across the manufacturing vertical. It has set its sights on aviation where the outsourced ER&amp;D market is as big as $9 billion per annum. “Apart from automotive, it will be a key beneficiary of tailwinds in aerospace led by capacity expansion plans of aircraft manufacturers and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) activities,” says a report by IDBI Capital. The growing electric vehicle sector too is another area of focus. Prashanth Tapse, senior VP of research at Mehta Equities says that portfolio is diverse across traditional OEM’s to new-age electric vehicles. “We think outsourcing business models would be in great demand going forward in engineering services and digital transformation services to global manufacturing clients helping clients to conceive, design, develop and deliver better products,” Tapse adds. While services constitute around 80% of its revenues, it also gets 11% of revenues from products business where it re-sells third-party software applications. It also has an education vertical where it provides ‘phygital’ solutions in manufacturing skills – that nets it with 9% of revenues. Slower than peers, but better In the last three fiscal years, from FY21 to FY23, its revenue and profit after tax grew at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36% and 62% respectively. Analysts say that the growth is a tad slow, as compared to its industry peers be it LTTS, its own group company Tata Elxsi and KPIT Cummins. “Tata Tech’s growth trajectory over FY16-23 remains slower than peers’, but has seen improvement in the last three years because of traction in select accounts. Weakness in a large client in H1FY24 due to near completion of the large full-vehicle development projects may weigh on the company’s near-term performance,” says a report by Emkay. The company had specified in its risk factors in the RHP that it’s heavily dependent on its top five clients. It has set a price band of ₹475-500 for the issue. At the upper end of the price band, Tata Tech is being valued at around 32 times its FY23 EPS. The same ratio for LTTS is at 40x, Tata Elxsi at 69x, and KPIT at 110x. Most brokerage reports say that the company has left something on the table for its IPO investors. “Despite 100% OFS offer investors are keen to own the share based on group legacy. We strongly advocate a good long term prospects for the company. We recommend it from a long-term perspective as well as strong listing gain due to investor friendly pricing given good room for upside,” said Tapse. IDBI Capital too said that it expects robust earnings growth going ahead, while Ventura also says that it has good earnings growth potential. “With the gradual recovery in the global economy, rising manufacturing capex and shift in manufacturing from US/Europe/China to India due to cost inflation and China+1 strategy, we are expecting strong in the TTECH’s financial performance in the coming years,” the Ventura report said. Tata Technologies IPO: The price is right say analysts

To expand the domestic <keyword id="2377476" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-manufacturing">defence manufacturing</keyword> ecosystem, a negative list of weapons and platforms would be notified with year-wise timelines for placing an embargo on import of such items from those dates. As per the draft <keyword id="9695994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-production-and-export-promotion-policy">Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy</keyword> (DPEPP 2020) announced on Monday, this list would be updated periodically, without compromising on the operational requirements of the Services, to allow lead-time to industry to prepare itself for any such procurement which is likely to come up, subsequent to the indicated embargo date. The policy proposes a Technology Assessment Cell (TAC) in coordination with the services, which would assess the industrial capability for design, development and production including re-engineering for production of various major systems like <keyword id="386104" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Armoured-Vehicles">armoured vehicles</keyword>, <keyword id="117400" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Submarines">submarines</keyword>, fighter aircraft, <keyword id="54022" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="helicopters">helicopters</keyword>, radars with the major industries in the country. A Project Management Unit (PMU), with representation from the Services, would be set up to support the acquisition process and facilitate management of the contracts. This setup would bring in expertise to the process of acquisition as well as create focus and synergy in building military capabilities. With self- reliance as the motto, aim is to move away from licensed production to Design, Develop and produce wherein the Nation owns the Design Rights and IP of the systems. "Our Armed forces have over the years acquired a range of platforms from diverse sources leading to a buildup of spares and consumables which has resulted in sub-optimal planning and resource allocation. Efforts would be made to adopt a family of weapons approach to standardize and optimize inventory and supply chain management," the policy said. In addition, efforts would be made to provide the industry greater visibility into the likely opportunities in the defence sector. Understanding future capital acquisition priorities will enable industry to develop technologies, carry out necessary ground work and position themselves in an optimal manner to compete at the appropriate time. In order to enhance procurement from domestic industry, it is incumbent that procurement is doubled from the current Rs 70,000 crore to Rs 1,40,000 crore by 2025. In order to achieve this objective, it is proposed to carve out a distinct budget head for domestic capital procurement. The policy will also strive for enhancing allocation for domestic capital procurement at the rate of minimum 15 per cent per annum for the next five years. Various studies have over the years brought out the need to enhance cost effectiveness and improve efficiency in the use of MoD's resources. Efforts would be made to scrutinize, evaluate and optimize various items of expenditure in the Defence budget. The policy says that investment promotion would be encouraged to provide specific focus on certain identified segments and technological areas. Investments in aviation sector which help in co-development and strengthening defence ecosystem would be facilitated in association with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Efforts would be made to address the identified gaps in those segments and offer incentives to global OEMs and domestic industry to set up design and manufacturing facilities in India. The investments in these segments would also be channelized by offering high multipliers through offsets obligations. Development of aero engines complex is a priority area. While significant improvements have been made, there are still critical gaps in the aero engine segment for future development programmes as well as for taking up the engine related MRO activities of the current inventory of platforms. The two Defence Corridors set up in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh would be specifically targeted by providing additional support as well as by offering higher multipliers for offset discharge for investments flowing into the Defence Corridors. India's new defence policy proposes a cell to re-engineer armoured vehicles, submarines, fighter aircraft, helicopters and more

India and the US have enjoyed a warm relationship in the past, but few recent hiccups have cast aspersions on these strategic trade partners’ relationships. We discussed the issue with Asoke Laha, National President of Indo American Chamber of Commerce (<keyword id="77185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IACC">IACC</keyword>) and Founder, President and CEO of <keyword id="2621954" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Interra-Information-Technologies">Interra Information Technologies</keyword>, and he had some interesting insights into the Indo-US trade ties and issues that plague the Indian IT sector. Here are some excerpts: 
 
India and the US resolved their differences over Trade Facilitation Agreement, which ended the impasse at the WTO. How do you foresee for Indo-US relations from here on? 
 
It’s a positive news. I see it as an opportunity for both the countries to begin work in several areas. I mean if the US and China could sign the Climate deal after such a long time, it further strengthens the possibility of both India and the US to do many things together that were unimaginable earlier. 
 
The US has always been interested in education and infrastructure sectors in India. Apart from these sectors, which are the other sectors that you think the US can share its expertise with India? 
 
One sector that I feel the US can share its expertise in is the manufacturing sector. Prime Minister Modi has been emphasizing on the growth of this sector. The US can share its knowledge in other segments such as equipments, robotics, technology and artificial intelligence. 
 
See, China has earlier expressed their desire to develop as the manufacturing hub. But the US would not want it as it would mean China’s dominance over the region. The US would not allow China to become the sole manufacturing hub in Asia for its own strategic reasons. Thus, 
India’s manufacturing sector has a great chance of developing. 
 
The US can also share its expertise in sectors such as automation, which is a key requirement in the manufacturing sector, as it cuts down the cost. 
 
Another sector is aviation. The Indian aviation industry is still growing and has a great potential to be one of the greatest market across the globe. Earlier, the environment was not there, so it could not grow much. But now, things have changed. We can see a lot of foreign players interested in investing in the sector including the Maintenance and Repair Overhaul (MRO) segment. India has the potential to cater to the infrastructural needs of various players in the global industry. 
 
India is now laying greater emphasis on its manufacturing sector. According to you, which are the areas that need substantial improvement before we can think of becoming a manufacturing hub? 
 
The biggest problem here is the attitude of the people. The fact that we have a casual attitude towards everything makes it very difficult for the county, as a whole, to grow as a manufacturing hub. Most people in India do not follow the deadline set by them. Besides, the quality of the goods produced is inferior and low. We also lack discipline that one can find in China. These are some of the areas, which if worked on, can help us grow by leaps and bounds. 
 
IPR issue has been a major bone of contention between India and the US. Of course, following PM Modi’s US visit, a panel was set up to discuss the way forward, but we haven’t seen anything concrete yet. What’s your take on the same? 
 
I believe IPR is a fundamental issue and is not just between the US and India. We have to understand that India lacks an investment culture. Product development is a high risk area and hence, we do not see much being done there. If we carefully look at it, then hardly any new product is ever produced in India. All this is because financing is a major issue for our manufacturers. 
 
Let us look at China. China offers 100% guarantee to the manufacturers that their research and technology is not stolen by their domestic companies. I have tried to do that in my company. 
 
I will tell you an instance when my company was developing a semi-product for a US client. The client liked the end product and signed a half a million dollar contract with us. But here comes the twist. Later, the guy who was working on that project informed me that he wanted to resign. I tried to talk him out for a few days but when it failed, I asked him to share the code and all other information about the product that he had developed as it was a company property. But to my utter shock, he told me that he did not develop anything. Later I found out that he had approached my client and had offered to do the job for half the price that we had quoted. So you see, IPR is a fundamental issue and every company has the right to protect its research, technology and other valuables that can be stolen. 
 
We have a lot of start-ups coming up in the India. How do you see Indian companies vis-à-vis their counterpart in the US. Do you feel Indian companies can survive in the US market, if given the opportunity? 
 
I think a lot of start-ups cannot survive in the global market because they are not original, but a copy of what is already there in the international market. And like I had mentioned earlier, the quality of products is not up to the mark, so I feel it will be difficult for Indian companies to totally dominate the US market. Just look at Japanese or Korean auto products. They offer world class quality and hence, fare well. So unless, Indian companies produce superior quality products, I don’t think they can compete in the US market. But India can invest in already established American companies or buy them out. In terms of sectors, I believe India can invest in IT, medicine sectors there. 
 
You are a global IT player yourself. What are the issues that you believe the IT industry in India should address? 
 
The Indian IT industry is considered to be low-cost. It used to be called the software factory or back-end office for large IT corporations across the world. I personally believe, the quality of product delivered, communication skills and delivery are the weak points. There is lack of discipline again, and we can find many Indian IT companies extending the deadlines. Our DNA is not being punctual. Besides, labour laws needs to be stricter. If these issues are addressed, the Indian IT industry will be way ahead in the race. 
 
Talking about exports to the US, could you please tell us what are the key pointers that any Indian exporter needs to remember while doing business in the US? 
 
I think the exporter first needs to know the US law in order to export anything to that country. The US authorities are very strict about the quality of the goods they import; therefore, it is extremely important for us to follow their quality standards. I will tell you an incident wherein an Indian readymade garment exporter had sent a consignment. During the sample check, one of the samples was not up to the prescribed standard. The US authorities rejected the entire consignment. So you see, quality is extremely important. 
 
Apart from this, documentation is very important. The exporters should know what all documents are required and should posses all the requisite documents. These are just some basic tips that any exporter, who wants to export to the US market, must remember. 
 
Lastly, the Indo-US trade is pegged at $63 billion. What according to you can the government do to push up this number? Where do you see the bilateral trade at in the next five years? 
 
I see the trade touching $500 billion in the next five years. Our chamber has a concrete plan to move forward and support the new government in boosting the relations between India and the US. We are also working with the Small and Medium Enterprises sector, a sector that we feel can tremendously boost our trade ties with the US. We will also be sending our delegation to the US and vice-versa, and organize events to create platforms for open communication between Indian and American companies.
