<ul><li>Data readiness, business impact and <keyword id="294572" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="machine-learning">machine learning</keyword> (ML) strategy are three parameters that every business needs to address before using ML for their needs. </li><li>Data readiness not only includes gathering the right amount of data, but also making sure the non-important bits are filtered out and that customer information is protected.</li><li>Businesses also need to find the right business problem to address — many tend to either undershoot or overshoot. </li></ul>Every business is looking to grab on to the machine learning (ML) bandwagon to either further their own business or narrow the gap against their competition. But before jumping in head first, Vikram Anbazhagan — the Director of Product for <keyword id="10140015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="language-ai-at-aws">Language AI at AWS</keyword> — believes that there are three critical questions that businesses should ask themselves. The first of which is data readiness. This includes having sufficient data that’s been cleaner up for ML use. The second is the anticipated business impact — what problem needs to be solved to either boost business efficiency or improve customer experience. <div type="image" title="why ai deloitte" msid="78769752" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;63% of executives surveyed by Deloitte said their AI initiatives were needed to catch up with their rivals or, at best, to open a narrow lead &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> “Many customers know they want to use ML but they’re asking how do I pick the first problem that I need to focus on in order to have a successful ML strategy,” Anbazhagan said at the BI Global Trends Festival 2020. But, the actual <keyword id="10140011" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="machine-learning-strategy">machine learning strategy</keyword> comes in at the end. The third and final piece of the puzzle addressing how data that a business has curated will match with the impact it has chosen to address. <div type="image" title="Copy of why ai deloitte" msid="78769907" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Global spending on AI forecast to grow four fold by 2024&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> At the end of the day, ML is nothing more than gathering a lot of historical data, learning from it and then using those lessons to predict what may happen in the future. And, that’s why getting the data part of it right is very critical since it forms the foundation of every use case. Data readiness Data is the backbone of all ML applications. Without data, an ML model has nothing to do. “Our customers tell us that more than 50% of their time while building an ML model is spent on getting the data, clearing it and getting it ready for the ML model,” said Anbazhagan. If the basics aren’t in place, the talent hired to build the ML model will spend the majority of their time just filtering through data rather than building use cases. <div type="twitter" handle="BiIndia" handlename="Business Insider India🇮🇳" image="http://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1232926719016718336/sfffJHNV_normal.jpg" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="1" status="#BIGTF2020 | Vikram Anbazhagan on what is most important in #MachineLearning and its potential in the next few year… https://t.co/Z7Wru27gIG" createdat="1603195353000" id="1318522996462514176"></div> In addition to looking at the data that companies already have on hand, they should also plan for the future — start collecting data that may be required a year from now. ‘Data hugging’ isn’t good in the long run The intrinsic value of data is no secret. Whether it is governments fighting over the data of its citizens or teams within a company. “We often notice what we call ‘data hugging.’ There are multiple teams in every company working on different projects, and they get really attached to their data — and they don’t want to share their data with other groups,” explained Anbazhagan. This kind of ‘data hugging’ can work in the short run allowing individual teams to roll out their little ML models, but in the long run, companies need to have an expansive view of all the data across their organisation. However, while sharing is caring, it’s also essential to have good access control policies and data governance to ensure that any customer data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. This includes segregating personal data from sensitive data from public data. Any personal details about customers — like address, credit card numbers, contact details, among others — need to be redacted. Picking a business problem to solve and using ML This is the tricky part. According to Anbazhagan, some companies tend to either overshoot or undershoot. Ideally, the chosen business problem should have a huge impact, but it should also be something that the ML model can solve within six to 10 months. “Some companies over-index on the business impact and pick some really complicated problem for which there may not be a lot of data,” he explained. In other cases, companies may have a lot of data, and the ML model also works well — but the chosen problem isn’t big enough. In such cases, Anbazhagan recommends using the models as proof-of-concept (POCs). This will allow employees to build up their skills and focus on more critical and high impact problems. Data readiness, business impact, and ML applicability are the three parameters that need to line up for a business to have a successful and robust ML strategy at the helm. Addressing the <keyword id="10140010" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ML-skill-gap">ML skill gap</keyword> Despite the growing demand for engineers and data scientists that specialise in ML, there is still a shortage in the market. According to the World Economic Forum (<a href="http://reports.weforum.org/future-of-jobs-2018/">WEF</a>), AI has the potential to create 58 million new jobs by 2022. However, according to <a href="https://www.tisi.org/Public/Uploads/file/20171201/20171201151555_24517.pdf">Tencent Research</a>, there are only around 300,000 AI engineers around the world. This makes recruiting talent for ML applications difficult and expensive. Anbazhagan believes companies would be better served by developing internal talent instead and creating a community around reskilling as ML continues to grow. ML is an inevitable part of the future. It automates most manual tasks that are time-consuming and repetitive in nature — doing them faster and more efficiently. However, it's not something that can be put in place overnight. Putting some thought and direction into a business’ ML strategy can make all the difference between being a leader or a laggard in the industry. About seven in 10 (71 per cent) professionals in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> are confident about keeping their jobs in 2023 despite the rough macroeconomic conditions and global layoffs, a report showed on Monday. There is a stark difference in the confidence levels of freshers and entry-level professionals and the ones with more than six years of experience. While 63 per cent of professionals with 0-3 years of experience are confident about retaining their job, this number jumps up to 83 per cent for professionals with more than six years of experience, according to the report by edtech company <keyword id="6559242" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="great-learning" source="Orion">Great Learning</keyword>. "With a tighter job market in 2023, skill development will be as critical as ever. The increase in intent to upskill in 2023 among professionals is expected given how rapidly technology and business practices are evolving," said <keyword id="7634970" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hari-krishnan-nair" source="Orion">Hari Krishnan Nair</keyword>, Co-Founder of Great Learning. In 2022, 79 per cent of professionals were planning to upskill, while in 2023, that number has risen to 83 per cent. "In 2023, the primary motivation for Indians to upskill is career growth within their current organisation. This is followed by personal interest and the expectation of new job opportunities as a result of upgraded skills," it added. In general, more male professionals enrolled in upskilling programs in 2022, but the gap in representation becomes more pronounced at higher levels of work experience. This is even lower than the general industry trend for female representation at senior positions, the report mentioned. 71% Indian professionals confident to retain jobs in 2023 despite global layoffs

In fact, there is an increase in India’s technology proficiency levels from 38% in 2021 to 46% 2022, as per Global Skills Report (GSR) 2022. West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of skilled people proficient in technology and business. West Bengal outpaced Karnataka as it has the most people who are proficient in more than 10 skills — leadership and management, human resources, cloud computing, computer programming, ML, and data analysis, according to the report. On the other hand, Andhra Pradesh has a robust pool of skilled workers with proficiency in technical skills like security engineering, operating systems, and computer networking. “Industry reports estimate that 28 million new technology jobs will be created in India by 2025. This year’s GSR signals a significant need for Indian learners to bridge the critical skills gap, especially in data science, to ensure this digital potential does not turn into a lost opportunity,” said Raghav Gupta, managing director, India and APAC, Coursera. According to the GSR, learners in India are over-indexed in skills such as investment management, blockchain and risk management,” says the report. India’s rank in specialized data science skills slipped by 12 positions and workforce development leaders must find ways to improve skill levels in data science. With a data science proficiency level of 26%, India’s companies may struggle to find the talent to fill those roles without more training. Education leaders should invest more resources in these areas, the report says. The number of open data science jobs in the country rose 47.1% between 2020 and 2021. According to the Coursera report, Indian learners in southern states perform better than those in states in the north. Overall, India’s ranking has slipped by four positions, from 64th to 68th spot globally in terms of digital skill proficiency. In Asia, India stands at the 19th position. “Strong industry-academia-government collaboration that focuses on the rapid deployment of high-quality digital and human skills training would be key to ensuring that the Indian workforce remains resilient and competitive amid rapid technological transformation,” Gupta added. West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have the most proficient techies in India

AI/ML skills are an important part of new technology adoption -- a route that most Indian companies are taking today. Though the jobs exist, finding and then sustaining the right talent for these jobs is a challenge. “It’s a real, real pain. Getting good talent for cutting edge new technology is the toughest. There’s such a fight for it. You get people and train them but they leave because they are being offered much higher salaries here and there,” MakeMyTrip CEO Deep Kalra told Business Insider in an earlier interview. MakeMyTrip has over 800 people working in tech, but their <keyword id="6357343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Data-Science">data science</keyword> team still has just about 15 people. Kalra said that while the team size is modest, it’s the churn which is the problem. Pawan Goyal, chief business officer at Naukri.com too agrees that there has been a significant increase in demand for AI/ML <keyword id="6357342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword>. “This is a niche talent and is in short supply. The supply has started increasing. However, there is a long way to go to match the demand,” he said. A recent KPMG survey says that in the next few years, 50% of the workforce will be preparing for <keyword id="6355999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai">AI</keyword>, <keyword id="51645" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ML">ML</keyword> and related technologies and that will be the biggest challenge for the HR functions. As finding the right talent gets more and more difficult, companies are also investing in their own employees and helping them adapt to the latest technologies – putting them through upskilling or reskilling programmes. “Companies need to rethink on how their employees will work alongside intelligent machines and get them to upskill for newer work profiles, else they will become redundant. Many companies often hold back on upskilling due to budgetary constraints or lack of time . And hence, they are now looking at hiring employees that come some opening balance of AI / ML skills,” said Neeti sharma, senior VP at Teamlease services. A way out would be for AI/ML to be included at the academic level in graduation colleges. “AI/ML will be used across all disciplines. Hence, it should become part and parcel of graduate education. This could be initiated by the government. Also, people should make use of the large number of excellent online courses available on platforms such as Coursera to pick up AI/ML skills,” said Goyal. Picking up the need to bring in these technologies at an academic level, Plaksha university, which has been set up by 50 entrepreneurs, has even partnered with UC Berkeley to bring fellowship programs in AI and ML. The programme called Tech Leaders Fellowship claims to be a first of its kind with a specialization in AI, ML and immersion in real-world applications, industry experience and leadership. “Today, there exist more than 5,000 engineering colleges in India, producing about a million engineering graduates every year. But most engineering education is still quite traditional. Plaksha is aiming to re-imagine technology and engineering education in India and the world,” said Vineet Gupta, founding member of Plaksha University, and co-chair of TLF Program Committee. Indian CEOs are having a tough time retaining AI, ML, and data science experts

A significant percentage of companies in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> believe the advent of 5G will herald a transformative era in the world of work, unlocking a wealth of opportunities for India's tech talent pool, says a report. According to the report by staffing company <keyword id="6381892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="teamlease-services" source="Orion">TeamLease Services</keyword>, over 80 per cent of respondents believe that IT and banking and <keyword id="6354241" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="financial-services" source="Orion">Financial Services</keyword> will benefit from the 5G technology in terms of job creation and upskilling. The report titled "India's 5G rollout: Revolutionising the People Supply Chain" is based on responses of over 247 companies on the impact of 5G on the ecosystem and employment generation. "With substantial investments, such as the PLI scheme allocating Rs 12,000 crore to the telecom sector, with approximately 25 per cent dedicated to creating new jobs, we are poised for a positive outlook on job creation and upskilling," TeamLease Services CEO - Staffing, Kartik <keyword id="6386349" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narayan" source="Orion">Narayan</keyword> said. This will boost confidence to harness the potential of 5G, creating unprecedented job opportunities, driving innovation and shaping a transformative future, he added. The adoption of 5G will have significant impact on industries such as <keyword id="6356925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bfsi" source="Orion">BFSI</keyword> (60 per cent), education (48 per cent), gaming (48 per cent) and retail and e-commerce (46 per cent), the report said. On a year-on-year basis, 46 per cent of participants anticipate job creation ranging from 61 per cent to 80 per cent within the first year of 5G implementation. "Telecommunications companies embracing 5G solutions present a promising growth opportunity. As telcos leverage the potential of 5G in network upgradation, migration, IoT/IIoT, mobility, network infrastructure, and network security, we anticipate increased hiring for specialised roles," Narayan said. This advancement creates new opportunities and drives demand for roles such as technical content writers, networking engineers, AI/ML professionals, UX designers, cloud computing engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data science and analytical experts and more, he added. The report, however, noted that the telecom industry is facing a considerable demand-supply gap of 28 per cent, which emphasises the urgent need for comprehensive upskilling and reskilling initiatives. Encouragingly, 88 per cent of employees expressed a preference for upskilling, indicating a strong desire to enhance their existing skill sets, the report said. Additionally, 11.2 per cent of employees showed a preference for reskilling, presenting significant opportunities in the job market for fresh talent, it added. The report also highlighted the impact of 5G on job creation over the next few years, with 41 per cent of respondents expecting an impact of more than 80 per cent on job creation over the next three years of 5G rollout. According to Narayan the impending 5G rollout is expected to lead to an 80 per cent increase in tech-related jobs. 5G adoption to unlock wealth of opportunities for India's tech talent pool: TeamLease

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Every black cab driver in London is required to pass a test called the Knowledge.</li><li>The advent of Uber put the Knowledge on every cell phone, lowering the barrier to entry for the profession.</li></ul>If you've ever gotten in a black cab in London, you'll likely have noticed just how knowledgeable your driver seems to be.Name an address in London, and chances are they'll know exactly where you're talking about, and the best way to get there, within moments. That's because for decades every black cab driver in London has been required to pass a test called <a href="https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/licensing/learn-the-knowledge-of-london" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Knowledge</a>, which requires memorizing miles and miles of London. It can take three to four years of study to pass the test, according to Transport for London. About a decade ago now, Uber arrived in London. The Knowledge was no longer necessary to get around. With a cell phone attached to someone's windscreen, any driver could navigate the city's backstreets."Suddenly, knowing the name of each street in London was no longer valuable expertise, so that anybody with a drivers license could drive a taxi," Professor Carl Benedikt Frey, the director of future of work at the Oxford Martin School, told me over email. "The result was more competition for incumbent taxi drivers who saw their incomes fall by around 10%."We could be about to see AI have a similar impact on a host of white-collar industries. <h2>AI will lower the barrier to entry for lots of technical jobs</h2>A recent study from Erik Brynjolfsson, Lindsey R. Raymond, and Danielle Li measured the impact of an AI-based conversational assistant on almost 5,200 customer support agents at a Fortune 500 software company. The trio found that the tool helped increase productivity by 14%, but critically, it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-tool-barely-helped-productivity-high-skilled-experienced-workers-study-2023-5">novice workers who benefited most</a>. "In contrast to studies of prior waves of computerization, we find that these gains accrue disproportionately to less-experienced and lower-skill workers," per their academic paper. "We argue that this occurs because ML systems work by capturing and disseminating the patterns of behavior that characterize the most productive agents."In other words, the lessons learned from months or years of experience are baked into an AI tool. As novice workers get access to these tools, they're able to close the gap in performance with more experienced colleagues, just like an Uber driver suddenly being able to compete with a black cab driver and their knowledge. It isn't just customer support work where this dynamic could take hold. Think translators, web designers, lawyers, accountants, copywriters, and HR professionals as well. The skills developed via advanced degrees or years of experience in a specific role, or in a specific company, might soon be embedded into a generative AI tool, lowering the bar to entry. <h2>The rise of AI tools could help millions of new software developers</h2>Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for example recently told <a href="https://time.com/6279668/satya-nadella-microsoft-leadership-brief/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Time</a> that AI tools could lower the barriers to entry for software developers. Referring to Microsoft's AI-enabled GitHub Copilot coding tool, he said: I mean, to give you a concrete example, developers who are using GitHub Copilot are 50-odd percent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/codex-github-copilot-chatgpt-openai-productivity-2023-3">more productive</a>, staying more in the flow. We have around 100 million professional developers, we think the world probably can get to a billion professional developers. That will be a massive increase in total developers, because the barriers to being a software developer are going to come down. This doesn't mean the great software developers won't remain great software developers but the ability for more people to enter the field will increase.That's good news for many wannabe software developers, but it's also bad news for many existing ones. What was once a highly-paid job requiring specific training might become a slightly less well-paid job that requires less training. (The pandemic had a much more significant impact on driver numbers.)"Some of these jobs, like tax preparers and web designers, could be automated away," Frey told me, referring to the kinds of jobs that could be impacted by the rise of AI tools in the workplace. "But for the most part, people in these jobs will just face more competition, similar to taxi drivers as Uber proliferated."

It has transformed, and will continue to transform the way we work, live and experience. This technology has the potential to add about $15.7 trillion to the world economy by 2030. While AI comes in-built in many products and services that enterprises use today, matured use-cases of the technology aren’t mainstream just yet. Only about 26% of organizations have AI projects in production, according to a global report released by O’Reilly. Scaling AI or deploying AI across the organization is perhaps one of the biggest challenges that enterprises face today. This is proving to be a roadblock in realizing the full potential of AI and ML. It works out well in the beginning and results are immediate. As they try to scale up, complexities mount. For example, AI requires customization at every step and teams will need to train each deep learning model as they move along with more use cases and applications. That’s exactly why most AI projects end up being time consuming, expensive, and overwhelming for teams. The fundamental challenge in scaling AI starts from this lack of an overarching vision. It's critical for organizations to set long-term business driven objectives and KPIs while moving AI to production. Introducing AI to a key business function would also require a solid strategy to deal with the ensuing organizational change. It is equally important to have the C-suite buy-in for successful completion of AI projects. The data hole: Lack of quality data and clean data can derail any ambitious AI project. It’s simple - you get back what you give. Machine learning-based systems depend heavily on data to build the predictive capabilities. Inaccurate or incomplete data can quickly lead to the failure of AI projects even before organizations realize. Harnessing and preparing the data is a humongous task for organizations that rely on traditional data management methods. To add to the data woes, explosion of unstructured data leads to the classic problem of ‘too much data’. Data silos and distributed data sources within the organization are other constraints to deal with. Ensuring data quality for both training data and working data is essential for the success of machine learning models. Involve data experts right at the beginning, focus on data analysis and review and invest on modern tools to ensure that you don’t go down the data hole. The AI skills gap: Shortage of skilled resources is a key barrier that organizations face in advancing their AI projects. About three in four Indian enterprises think that lack of skills in digital technologies such as AI/ML impede innovation. Globally, a large percentage of organizations, including early adopters, struggle with the AI skills gap. And this gap is evident at all levels of the AI field – right from AI researchers to data scientists to business leaders. AI-ready talent will continue to be in high demand in the coming days. Organizations need to adopt a balanced approach of ‘hiring and retraining’ to ensure sustainable availability of talent. It’s time that organizations prepare for a future in which employees work side by side with AI. Three mantras to ease the pain that AI adoption could present

<ul class="summary-list"><li>AI is going to have a huge impact on the workforce, making many workers more productive.</li><li>But just as there will be winners in the workplace, there will be losers.</li></ul>"Mediocrity will be automated."That was the verdict a top tech executive shared with me recently, describing the impact he predicted AI would have on the workforce. And while the phrasing might seem a bit harsh, there's growing evidence that he might be on to something.More specifically, AI could disproportionately impact the middle class of white-collar workers — the folks who are mid-career, mid-ability, mid-level, and yes, in some cases, mediocre. Here's why:<h2>AI benefits the least experienced workers</h2>Academics Erik Brynjolfsson, Lindsey R. Raymond, and Danielle Li recently studied the impact of access to an AI-based conversational assistant on almost 5,200 customer support agents at a Fortune 500 software company. The trio found that the tool helped increase productivity by 14%. And critically, it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-tool-barely-helped-productivity-high-skilled-experienced-workers-study-2023-5">novice workers who benefited most</a>."In contrast to studies of prior waves of computerization, we find that these gains accrue disproportionately to less-experienced and lower-skill workers," read their academic paper. "We argue that this occurs because ML systems work by capturing and disseminating the patterns of behavior that characterize the most productive agents."In other words, the lessons learned from months or years of experience are baked into an AI tool. As novice workers get access to these tools, they're supercharged, helping them close the gap in performance with more experienced colleagues. Or, as the study puts it: "We find that the AI tool helps newer agents move more quickly down the experience curve: treated agents with two months of tenure perform just as well as untreated agents with over six months of tenure."It isn't just customer support work where this dynamic could take hold. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, for example, recently told <a href="https://time.com/6279668/satya-nadella-microsoft-leadership-brief/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Time</a> that the same could be true for software developers. He said: I mean, to give you a concrete example, developers who are using GitHub Copilot are 50-odd percent more productive, staying more in the flow. We have around 100 million professional developers, we think the world probably can get to a billion professional developers. That will be a massive increase in total developers, because the barriers to being a software developer are going to come down. This doesn't mean the great software developers won't remain great software developers but the ability for more people to enter the field will increase.That's good news for many wannabe software developers, but it's also bad news for many existing software developers. That's because lowering the barrier to entry will increase the supply of workers, putting downward pressure on wages. For decades, every taxi driver in London has been required to pass a test called <a href="https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-and-private-hire/licensing/learn-the-knowledge-of-london" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Knowledge</a>, which requires memorizing miles of streets of central London.Then, Uber arrived and essentially put the Knowledge on every cell phone in every car in London. "Suddenly, knowing the name of each street in London was no longer valuable expertise, so that anybody with a drivers license could drive a taxi," Frey told me over email. "The result was more competition for incumbent taxi drivers who saw their incomes fall by around 10%."Now you could see the same effect on lots of white-collar work. Think translators, web designers, lawyers, coders, accountants, copywriters, or HR professionals. The skills developed through advanced degrees or years of experience in a specific role or company might soon be embedded into a generative AI tool, lowering the bar to entry. The benefit to employers here is clear. If a less experienced employee aided by an AI tool can be as effective as a more expensive, more experienced employee, you can guess what's going to happen next. A version of this has already played out in many places. Take Wall Street trading floors, for example. Whereas top traders and salespeople were employed in the past because of their market savvy and experience, banks have, over the past decade, found ways to lower their costs by moving out many of those types, and replacing them with junior employees with better tech tools. There was even a word for this process of replacement: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/juniorization-is-helping-wall-street-cut-costs-2016-3">juniorization</a>. Now you could see a similar, accelerated process play out across many more white-collar industries.That's before you get to the potential for workers to be replaced entirely by AI. I wrote back in April that tech companies weren't just cutting jobs, but that many of those <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-jobs-arent-coming-back-2023-4">jobs weren't going to come back</a>. Within weeks, IBM's CEO said it was halting hiring for almost 8,000 jobs that could be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-halts-hiring-for-7800-jobs-that-could-be-replaced-by-ai-report-2023-5">replaced by AI</a>. British telecommunications giant BT Group latest said it was cutting 55,000 jobs, and that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-telecom-ceo-ai-replace-jobs-chatgpt-bt-2023-5">AI could replace 10,000</a> of those by 2030. <h2>If you're worried about what AI means for your career, start using it</h2>To be sure, there's lots that's still unclear about how all this plays out. AI tools are still in their diapers, and we don't yet know what they'll grow up to be. And much will depend on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-boom-share-profits-workers-productivity-wages-2023-5">how companies decide to employ AI.</a>"Workers' experiences may be more dependent on the nature of their firms' adoption of these technologies," Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told my colleague <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-boom-share-profits-workers-productivity-wages-2023-5">Jacob Zinkula</a>. Jio, Ola, Accenture, IBM and more are looking for data scientists across India

<ul><li>Bangalore, India’s IT capital, is the highest paying city in the country. </li><li>Hyderabad took the second spot for junior level roles with CTC at ₹5 lakhs. But for mid and senior levels, Mumbai is the second highest paying city with ₹15.07 lakhs 33.95 lakhs, respectively. </li><li>It has the highest average CTC at ₹5.27 lakh for junior levels (0-6 years), ₹16.45 lakh at mid level (6-15) and ₹35.45 lakh at senior level. </li></ul>If you want to draw a good salary, it might be a good idea to move to Bangalore. The IT capital offers the best salaries according to the Randstad Insights Salary Trends Report 2019. In the city, a junior employee is paid as an average CTC of ₹5.27 lakh. While mid level employees make ₹16.45 lakh and seniors around ₹35.45 lakh per annum. The city offers the highest pay for all three levels. Hyderabad took the second spot for junior level roles with CTC at ₹5 lakhs. But for mid and senior levels, Mumbai is the second highest paying city with ₹15.07 lakhs 33.95 lakhs, respectively. The next best cities are Pune and NCR. “Against the backdrop of the current economic growth scenario, this report comes as an eye opener for both companies and professionals on building their talent pools and competencies.  IT is the highest paying industry in India There are no surprises when it comes to the best paying industry which is IT. Juniors in the field are paid ₹4.96 lakhs per annum and seniors at ₹35.84 lakhs. “The renewed demand for professionals with digital skills – cloud, product management, analytics, AI and automation – could be the major factors for the sector’s strong showing this year,” said the report. There is a huge demand-supply gap between Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning experts. As a result, there’s a cut throat competition for people in AI/ML. “Talent with the ‘right-fit’ skills commands a significant premium over their peers and companies are not constrained by bell curves and averages when it comes to the salary structure for professionals with in-demand skills; evidenced by the findings of this report,” said Dupuis. And, the Experis IT Employment Outlook Survey <a href="https://www.experisindia.com/outlook_survey.php">predicted</a> as much, expecting a positive net employment outlook of 53% between October 2018 and March 2019. But, the survey also pointed out how most of the employment will be generated by non-IT companies looking to transform digitally. As much as 45% of the demand for IT professionals would come from companies involved in utilities, finance, manufacturing and retail. The rapid evolution of machines and algorithms in the workplace could create 133 million new roles in place of 75 million that will be displaced between now and 2022, Even NASSCOM backed that claim with their own <a href="https://www.nasscom.in/newsline/envisioning-future-jobs">study</a> indicating how <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI), internet of things (IoT) and big data analytics would drive <keyword id="59516" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-hiring">IT hiring</keyword> in the future. And, while the change in the nature of IT jobs will create 133 million new opportunities, it will also result in the displacement of 75 million jobs by 2022 <a href="https://www.weforum.org/press/2018/09/machines-will-do-more-tasks-than-humans-by-2025-but-robot-revolution-will-still-create-58-million-net-new-jobs-in-next-five-years/">according</a> to the World Economic Forum. This phenomenon can be observed in India where the overall number of employees in the top two IT firms in India — TCS and Infosys — has increased, but the net addition per quarter has been dipping in the past two quarters. Even though, for FY19, hiring between the two has grown 350%.

 But, it’s not that jobs don’t exist — the problem is more about the growing skill gap that is indicative of a much more severe issue at an education level. Employers are looking to hire individuals for very specific tasks that require a specialised skill set meanwhile higher education institutes are still giving out generic and broad degrees. In October 2018, more than 50,000 data science and machine learning (ML) jobs were <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/trends/jobs-in-data-science-machine-learning-vacant-in-india/story/285446.html">vacant</a> in India. And, as companies look for highly skilled workers, the unskilled and low-skilled portion of the workforce will suffer further. Even when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) there were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-has-a-booming-artificial-intelligence-sectorand-its-struggling-to-fill-over-4000-vacant-positions/articleshow/67154961.cms">reportedly</a> 4,000 vacant positions in December 2018 according to Analytics India Magazine study. Big data analytics is currently the ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/big-data-and-analytics-may-be-the-hottest-sector-but-india-has-a-serious-dearth-of-data-scientists/articleshow/66860305.cms">hottest</a>’ sectors in IT, but India only has fewer than 10% of data scientists available globally. LinkedIn estimates that the demand for big data professionals will only increase in the future, hitting nearly 40% over the next two years. The situation is already so severe that earlier this year in February, over 150 individuals with Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and engineering degrees <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/in-india-mbas-and-engineering-graduates-compete-for-sanitation-jobs/articleshow/67866169.cms">applied</a> for the 14 available posts at the Sanitation Department in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Hiring by Indian IT companies has grown 12 months in a row, up over three-fold

<ul><li>India's Silicon Valley is headed to the polls today and unemployment is one of their main concerns. </li><li>It's not only the IT industry but also the small enterprises that have been hit by demonetisation and India's revamp of its tax system. </li><li>Bengaluru's transformation to an industrial hub hasn't been without its cost with the city's burgeoning environment pollution problem.</li></ul>Bengaluru, known as India’s Silicon Valley and home to two of the biggest IT companies in India — Infosys and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/wipro-phishing-attack-computer-system-hacked/articleshow/68918449.cms">Wipro</a> — goes to the polls today representing 17% of Karnataka’s population. Amid the rapid changes in technology and the United States <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/us-immigration-denial-of-h1-b-visas-raises-legal-questions/articleshow/68844794.cms">tightening</a> immigration laws, the sheen from India’s IT hub has dulled. Between 2016 and 2018, at least five million people lost their jobs in India according to a <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-election-jobs/five-million-lost-jobs-in-india-between-2016-and-2018-report-idINKCN1RT1I3">report</a> by the Azim Premji University reporting unemployment increase in the formal and informal sectors of the economy. India is already looking at the highest unemployment rate in 45 years according to <a href="http://v">reports</a> and its effect is not lost on Bengaluru even with the <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/here-are-jobs-hiring-rises-by-15-bangalore-tops-check-where-delhi-mumbai-stand/1487202/">highest</a> hiring rate in the country. <a href="https://www.teamleasegroup.com/resources/reports/19">According</a> to TeamLease’s Employment Outlook, Bengaluru has been categorised as an employment ‘laggard’ with its employment outlook falling two percentage points in 2018. Waning job growth after demonetisation and the implementation of the General Goods and Services Tax (GST), Bengaluru is far from the day when it saw job spurts across the board for technical and blue-collar positions — starting from state run companies like India Telephone Industries Limited (ITI), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Electronic Limited (BHEL), and Bhart Earth Movers Limited (BEML).

 Changes in technology As technology gets more complex with the rapid implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), so does the <a href="https://www.nasscom.in/system/files/secure-pdf/the-future-of-me_0.PDF">gap</a> of technical and non-technical skill requirements required for the sector. So, it's not that the jobs don’t exist in Bengaluru — there’s actually an increasing demand for highly skilled technical management jobs that offer <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/bengaluru-pays-the-highest-salaries-in-india-study/articleshow/66743965.cms">high</a> salaries — but more, that people aren’t equipped with the correct skill sets for employment. The bigger issue boils down to the quality and content of educational institutions where the <a href="https://www.facilities.aicte-india.org/dashboard/pages/dashboardaicte.php">placement rate</a> of engineering and management schools was its highest at 30% between 2012 to 2018, according to AICTE’s online data dashboard. It’s not just Bengaluru that has jobs on its mind. It’s the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/lok-sabha-elections-2019-pew-research-report-on-key-election-issues/articleshow/68572903.cms">number one</a> issue for Indian voters as they participate in the world’s largest democratic exercise according to a report by the Pew Research Center (PRC). Lingering effects of demonetisation Demonetisation has been particularly hard for the citizens in Peenya, one of the biggest industrial areas in Asia located in northwest Bengaluru — and primary depends on cash for its transactions. It’s home to more than 6,000 small businesses, employing over 800,000 people and generation ₹120 billion ($1.72 billion) in revenue, according to Peenya Industries Association. Even Bengaluru’s realty market is only just <a href="https://bangaloremirror.indiatimes.com/bangalore/others/realty-market-rises-from-demonetisations-ashes/articleshow/63523111.cms">starting</a> to recover from the effects of demonetisation where property <a href="https://news.housebolo.com/demonetisation-impact-bangalores-property-markets-takes-a-hit/">registrations</a> dipped from 1,800 per day to 200 per day. Startups <a href="https://inc42.com/features/indian-startup-shutdowns-2017/">came</a> under the gun as well, especially the e-commerce segment. Bigger startups like Flipkart and Zomato, both based out of Bengaluru, had to <a href="http://v">figure out</a> how to make up for the fact that 60 to 70% of their orders were cash-on-delivery transactions. Choking on industrial waste While industries in Bengaluru have thrived over the past couple of years, it has not been without its cost. The city’s Bellandur Lake and Vrishabhavathi River have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The Bellandur Lake was seen spewing a 10-feet high wall of toxic foam that seeped on to the roads and bridges.

 The Peenya Industrial Belt, with more than 7,500 industries — including the Peenya, Yeshwanthpura, Rajajinagar, Jalahalli, Goraguntepalya and Dasarahalli industrial areas — has also been called into question for polluting the Vrishabhavathi River and the lakes within its catchment area. One of lakes, Nelagadaranahalli Lake, is even <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/how-bengaluru-s-peenya-industrial-area-has-choked-and-killed-its-surrounding-lakes-90116">speculated</a> to be more toxic than Bellandur Lake. The problem seems to be on the rise despite corporates facing penalties <a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/pollution/ngt-makes-polluters-pay-nearly-double-so-far-this-year-than-whole-of-2018-63927">amounting</a> to ₹750 million ($10.8 million) within the first quarter of 2019 for water pollution in Karnataka from National Green Tribunal (NGT). The issue of the city’s lakes being polluted also fuels the resultant water crisis in the city. Citizens <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/bengaluru/2019/mar/26/water-and-traffic-issues-bog-down-it-showcase-of-bengaluru-1955879.html">claim</a> that the water was crystal clear and used for drinking and agricultural activities. But despite these issues, the biggest <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/india/decoded-the-concerns-and-aspirations-of-the-urban-electorate-in-seven-indian-cities/articleshow/68868018.cms">challenge</a> is going to be getting voters to come out and participate in a city that has consistently recorded a low voter turnout. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP already paid the price for some of these issues by losing its opportunity to win during the Karnataka’s State Assembly Elections in 2018. But, the Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress alliance that replaced the government has been <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/politics/dissidence-in-some-lok-sabha-seats-over-jds-alliance-says-congress-2078551.html">facing dissidence</a> in certain constituencies, hampering their prospects. Job losses will haunt Bengaluru, India’s Silicon Valley, as it goes to polls today

<ul><li>We bring to you a series of columns from industry experts, looking back at the last 10 years. </li><li>The columns will explore how the media, marketing and advertising industry has transformed in the last decade. </li><li>Amaresh Godbole, CEO, Digitas India walks us through his personal journey from 2010 to 2020 as well as the different stages of evolution that the digital industry went through in the last decade.</li></ul>The year was 2009. I was trying to convince my boss to accept my resignation. He couldn’t fathom why I would leave a fast-track career in an established network agency to join an unknown digital shop. I couldn’t blame him. Everyone I knew in the agency world felt that it was hara-kiri. There was a tsunami coming and the MarComm industry at the time was in collective denial about it. In the decade since, I have witnessed the industry get from there to acceptance in classic stages. 2009-2010 – Denial This was the era of flash banners, microsites and entrepreneur led digital shops. Some got as far as animated ‘viral’ videos, typically depicting popular Bollywood characters or mythology to support the ‘real’ campaign. All of it was at best considered cute. CMOs and CCOs had no time for digital work and usually the junior brand manager that drew a short straw was put in charge of it. Some industry luminaries were even dismissing digital as a passing trend. With barely 60 million users online, no one bothered to argue. Of course, the fees reflected the sentiment, and seemed like a cruel joke when compared to the soon to perish 15% commission model. 2011-2012 – Anger A new reality emerged. Smartphones + Mobile Data + Social Media = Consumer voice at scale. Brands and agencies alike plunged in, trying to understand how to play this game. The ones who didn’t soon realized that it was akin to not attending your own trial where the consumer was judge, jury and executioner. I recall, embarrassingly so in hindsight, that we had an entire brainstorm to understand how hashtags worked. Facebook applications, paid followers, trending mechanics, always-on content calendars et all emerged in this period. Amidst this the word ‘disruption’ and the consequent need for ‘transformation’ started gaining momentum. A lot of people across industries were angry. Many had spent decades learning the ropes of their business, and suddenly there was a new set of rules. But they weren’t set rules, the only thing you could be certain of is that things would keep changing. 2013-2016 – Bargaining Okay, we need digital… “But there’s no reach” “But print is more credible” “But we can solve the problem by hiring 1-2 millennials in house” To illustrate the sentiment of this period, a couple of us from our agency’s leadership featured in a leading publication’s ‘most admired agency leaders’ list alongside traditionally well-known faces. And instead of calls from other leaders congratulating us, we were asked in genuinely confused tones whether we had paid to be on it, so they could rationalize it. The ‘buts’ didn’t stop the advent of digital. HTML 5 made engaging interfaces available at scale across devices. Budgets grew and demand for digital talent skyrocketed. It became a 24*7 struggle to keep up with real-time marketing, constantly evolving platform algorithms and the mobile app ecosystem. Recognizing their gaps, holding companies got into M&amp;A mode and independent digital agencies around the world were quickly bought up. 2017-2018 – Depression Realization dawned that we were up against Google and Facebook as frenemies, as well as consultancies and tech companies like Accenture as competitors. It really sunk in when we saw a change of guard at many celebrated agencies, with revered talent making way for others if they hadn’t adapted. For individuals in the business, it was a wake-up call - upskill or soon be redundant. Marketers had smelt the coffee much earlier and had been training their teams for years. These well trained clients too were putting pressure on their agency partners to speak the language of modern marketing. The final punch in the gut was when a leading holding company merged two of their greatest legacy agency networks into digital brands, changing the face of the industry forever. 2019 – Acceptance This year was truly the coming of age for modern marketing practices. Creativity powered by technology was celebrated on the world’s biggest stages. OTT players and devices like the Amazon Firestick blurred the line between when that LED on your wall is a TV and when it is a screen. The reach argument in India was dealt a defining blow as the country crossed 500Mn people online. Many of them, who have difficulty interacting with screens and text, are using voice as their first interface. Others are driving up the demand for vernacular content. Fittingly, this year digital agencies such as ours grew to a scale comparable to many legacy agencies. And it is increasingly dawning on leaders in the industry that the time for distinction between digital and traditional capabilities has passed. Strategy and creative skills are still crucial. But they need to be coupled with data and technology to deliver the demands of marketing today and tomorrow. 2020 and beyond Voice, video and vernacular will scale as drivers of consumer engagement. Machine Learning algorithms fed by data will transform how things work internally for companies, as well as how they interact with their customers. Emerging technologies like blockchain will change the norms of transaction. New jobs like Data Security Specialists will be in demand. Many people have barely wrapped their heads around the digital disruption so far and feel exhausted thinking about another upskilling exercise. But continuous learning is the key to survival. For us, it could mean focusing on cracking a great idea and letting the machine take care of dynamic creative personalization. Formulating a brilliant media strategy and letting ML take care of optimum automated bidding and blockchain powered safe transactions.
