Which is why the <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2018/07/24/science.aau1829">discovery of an underground lake</a> by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) on the red planet is a significant step towards finding life outside the Earth. Even the Indian Chandrayaan-I’s discovery of water forming on the Moon gave an impetus to the possibility of establishing a manned base on the natural satellite. But, considering the planet’s temperature and the salt content of the water, it’s very unlikely that any living organisms would be able to survive. There’s also the fact that the Shallow Radar (<keyword id="6470277" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sharad">SHARAD</keyword>) satellite has been orbiting Mars as well and hasn’t been able to detect the underground lake at all. Either way, the discovery of water on the planet enhances the possibility of future life on the planet. However, the law of planetary protection also requires that no spacecraft from Earth can land where there is the potential for life, for fear of contamination. Though they aren’t able to determine the exact size of the lake, their data indicates that it’s 20 kilometers across and at least 1 meter deep. And because Mars has such a thin atmosphere, despite being <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-confirms-evidence-that-liquid-water-flows-on-today-s-mars">warm</a> once upon a time, the planet has cooled down and most of the water is locked up in ice. For this water to be in liquid form at subzero temperatures means that the water probably has very high salt content. And, it’s going to be cold. Which is why most <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-44952710">experts</a> on the topic are claiming that though finding water on the planet is a significant discovery, it doesn’t necessitate the presence of life. The temperatures and salt content of the water pose a major obstacle for any living organism to exist. Deep dive from the sky The discovery was led by a team of Italian researchers who used the readings sent back by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS). On board the <keyword id="59844" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Space-Agency">European Space Agency</keyword>’s (<keyword id="191401" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ESA">ESA</keyword>) Mars Express Orbiter, the MARSIS is a radar instrument that inspects the surface of Mars and its immediate subsurface as well. It sends out a signal and then examines what is sent back. These ‘reflections’ provide indications of what maybe beneath the surface. Compiling 29 sets of these radar samplings, the Italian team noticed a sharp change in the signal. The change allowed them to map out the outline of a lake. But here’s the catch. It took them 3 years to calculate the exact size of the subsurface water body because the instrument wasn’t calibrated. Either way, there are a number of possibilities that open up thanks to this discovery. The most basic of which is that if there’s one lake, there’s got to be more around, right? It’s possible that this lake is only one in a network of lakes in the same south polar region of Mars.

Bernie Madoff's sister and her husband found dead in apparent murder-suicide, police say

An international team of researchers has found new evidence for the possible existence of liquid water beneath the south polar ice cap of <keyword id="47638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mars" source="Orion">Mars</keyword>. The results, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, provide the first independent line of evidence, using data other than radar, that there is liquid water beneath Mars' south pole. The researchers, led by the University of Cambridge with involvement from the University of Sheffield, used spacecraft laser-altimeter measurements of the shape of the upper surface of the ice cap to identify subtle patterns in its height. They then showed that these patterns match computer model predictions for how a body of water beneath the ice cap would affect the surface. Their results are in agreement with earlier ice-penetrating radar measurements that were originally interpreted to show a potential area of liquid water beneath the ice. There has been debate over the liquid water interpretation from the radar data alone, with some studies suggesting the radar signal is not due to liquid water. "This study gives the best indication yet that there is liquid water on Mars today because it means that two of the key pieces of evidence we would look for when searching for sub-glacial lakes on Earth have now been found on Mars," said Frances Butcher, second author of the study from the University of Sheffield. "Liquid water is an essential ingredient for life, although it does not necessarily mean that life exists on Mars," Butcher said. In order to be liquid at such cold temperatures, the resaerchers noted that the water beneath the south pole might need to be really salty, which would make it difficult for any microbial life to inhabit it. However, it does give hope that there were more habitable environments in the past when the climate was less unforgiving, they said. Like Earth, Mars has thick water ice caps at both poles, roughly equivalent in combined volume to the Greenland Ice Sheet. However, unlike Earth's ice sheets which are underlain by water-filled channels and even large subglacial lakes, the polar ice caps on Mars have until recently been thought to be frozen solid all the way to their beds due to the cold Martian climate. In 2018, evidence from the European Space Agency's Mars Express satellite challenged this assumption. The satellite has an ice-penetrating radar called MARSIS, which can see through Mars' southern ice cap. It revealed an area at the base of the ice that strongly reflected the radar signal, which was interpreted as an area of liquid water beneath the ice cap. However, subsequent studies suggested that other types of dry materials, which exist elsewhere on Mars, could produce similar patterns of reflectance if they exist beneath the ice cap. Given the cold climate conditions, liquid water beneath the ice cap would require an additional heat source, such as geothermal heat from within the planet, at levels above those expected for present-day Mars. "The combination of the new topographic evidence, our computer model results, and the radar data make it much more likely that at least one area of subglacial liquid water exists on Mars today, and that Mars must still be geothermally active in order to keep the water beneath the ice cap liquid," said Professor Neil Arnold from Cambridge's Scott Polar Research Institute, who led the research. On Earth, subglacial lakes affect the shape of the overlying ice sheet - its surface topography. The water in subglacial lakes lowers friction between the ice sheet and its bed, affecting the velocity of ice flow under gravity. This in turn affects the shape of the ice sheet surface above the lake, often creating a depression in the ice surface followed by a raised area further down-flow. The team, including researchers from the University of Nantes, University College, Dublin, and the Open University, used a range of techniques to examine data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor satellite of the surface topography of the part of Mars’ south polar ice cap where the radar signal was identified. Their analysis revealed a 10-15 kilometre-long surface undulation comprising a depression and a corresponding raised area, both of which deviate from the surrounding ice surface by several metres. This is similar in scale to undulations over subglacial lakes here on Earth. The team then tested whether the observed undulation on the surface of the ice could be explained by liquid water at the bed. They ran computer model simulations of ice flow, adapted to specific conditions on Mars. They then inserted a patch of reduced bed friction in the simulated ice sheet bed where water, if present, would allow the ice to slide and speed up. The researchers also varied the amount of geothermal heat coming from inside the planet. These experiments generated undulations on the simulated ice surface that were similar in size and shape to those the team observed on the real ice cap surface. The similarity between the model-produced topographic undulation and the actual spacecraft observations, together with the earlier ice-penetrating radar evidence suggest that there is an accumulation of liquid water beneath Mars’ south polar ice cap, the researchers said. This magmatic activity occurred relatively recently in the subsurface of Mars to enable the enhanced geothermal heating needed to keep the water in a liquid state, they added. Scientists find new evidence for liquid water on Mars

He suggested that Rittenhouse had never truly intended to protect the Kenosha car dealership that night, as the teenager has stated, and said no serious medic who genuinely intended to treat injured people would be toting an AR-15 rifle."He's like a quack doctor practicing without a license," Binger said. "He wrapped up an ankle and I think maybe helped somebody who got a cut on their hand. Yay. "The same rules apply to him and everyone else. And everyone else has a right to defend themselves also. Not just the defendant."The jury is set to begin deliberating Rittenhouse's fate on Tuesday.

But according to a new study <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2018/07/24/science.aar7268" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published in the journal Science</a>, liquid water may exist there, too.Researchers from the National Institute for Astrophysics in Bologna in Italy used a radar tool on the European Space Agency's Mars Express satellite to probe the planet's ice caps. They believe three years' worth of data indicates there could be a lake of liquid water under the caps that stretches 20 kilometers across.The team, led by Roberto Orosei, said this may be the first time scientists have found liquid water that can remain in a liquid state for a prolonged period of time, rather than freezing. Elsewhere on the red planet, it is too cold for water to remain a liquid - Mars' <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/allaboutmars/facts/#?c=inspace&amp;s=distance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average temperature is -81 degrees Fahrenheit (-62 degrees Celsius)</a>."If these researchers are right, this is the first time we've found evidence of a large water body on Mars," Cassie Stuurman, a geophysicist at the University of Texas who found signs of an enormous Martian ice deposit in 2016, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-water-is-buried-beneath-martian-landscape-study-says-2018-7">told the AP</a>.<h2>Searching for Martian water</h2>In their paper, the researchers suggested that the lake could lie about 1.5 kilometers below the ice cap's surface. But they are not yet certain whether there is really a lake there or how deep it could be. Until a human expedition or more sophisticated Rovers can investigate the polar region further, we won't know for sure. But for now, liquid water seems to be the most likely explanation for what researchers observed."I really have no other explanation," Orosei <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-water-is-buried-beneath-martian-landscape-study-says-2018-7">told the AP</a>.Radar detection has proved unreliable for gathering information about Mars in the past. But after reprogramming the radar tool on the Mars Express satellite - called the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding, or MARSIS - radar pulses were able to penetrate the surface of the ice caps.The tool measured how radio waves traveled and behaved when traveling through Mars' ice caps, then the satellite beamed that information to Earth. This gave the team an idea of the composition under the ice caps.Time was also not on the researchers' side, however. They had to wait for the satellite to be in the right place to observe the caps at night time, a position that has only occurred 30 times in three years.<h2>Liquid water would have major implications for life on Mars and future human settlements</h2><a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/2174955-massive-lake-of-water-found-beneath-mars-south-pole-could-host-life/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Orosei told New Scientist</a> that a combination of calcium, magnesium, and sodium salts on Mars can lower water's freezing point, which might explain the possibility of a liquid lake.If it exists, there's also hope that the water could potentially host life."It is not a place where life would be expected to have an easy time, but it is possible based upon terrestrial analogues," Orosei told New Scientist. The analogues he's referring to are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atacama-desert-study-microbial-life-on-mars-2018-2?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">places on Earth that researchers have used to mimic Mars environments</a> to test conditions in which microbes could survive.Finding a source of liquid water on Mars would also be exciting for the prospect that the red planet could one day host a human settlement. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-colonization-of-mars-sxsw-2018-3?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Both Elon Musk</a> and NASA have released plans to send humans to Mars, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-will-we-colonize-mars-nasa-timeline-2030s-2018-2?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">maybe as soon as the 2030s</a>.But there are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-colonization-human-survival-radiation-food-biosphere-2018-4">huge barriers to any colonization efforts</a>, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronaut-plants-air-food-water-life-support-2018-5">growing enough food and recycling waste</a>. Pre-delivered supplies and habitats could sustain human life on the barren surface for a year or two, some experts say, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-outposts-are-doable-but-maybe-not-colonies-2018-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">long term colonization is a different matter</a>. Researchers have even highlighted concerns about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-colony-reproduction-complications-2018-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">how reproduction would work on Mars,</a> should a self-sustaining settlement ever arise there, since life in space has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/space-effects-human-body-brain-bones-dna-2018-5">dramatic effects on people's health</a>.Despite all these challenges, it's exciting that there could be an underground reservoir of water on Mars. Perhaps it could be tapped as a resource, or maybe it harbors undiscovered clues about alien life. Plus, as Orosei <a href="http://sci.esa.int/mars-express/60516-mars-express-detects-liquid-water-hidden-under-planets-south-pole/">said in a statement</a>, this discovery may be a clue that Mars has other hidden bodies of water that are still waiting to be found. The first eight minutes of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/How-ABCs-Scandal-Gets-2200-Tweets-Per-Minute/articleshow/21370581.cms">ABC’s</a> latest offering <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Watch-Priyanka-Chopra-as-an-FBI-Agent-in-the-trailer-of-Quantico/articleshow/47264370.cms">Quantico</a> is out and it’s clichéd as hell. 
 Created by Joshua Safran, <keyword id="253731" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quantico">Quantico</keyword> traces the lives of a group of young FBI recruits, training at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia. 
The lead is played by one of Bollywood’s finest <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Priyanka-Chopra-releases-first-look-of-Jai-GangaaJal-on-Prakash-Jhas-request/articleshow/48984128.cms">Priyanka Chopra</a> who essays the role of <keyword id="2845440" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alex-Parrish">Alex Parrish</keyword>. 
 
The thriller is slated to go on air from the 27th of September, but the makers decided to go ahead and give us a sneak-peak by releasing the first eight minutes of the first episode, because a trailer’s just not enough. 
 The episode starts out with familarising us with <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>’s character lying face down amidst wreckage and it then cuts to the past where we are shown Piggy Chops lying to her mother like a true American daughter about going to the station, but instead heading out to the airport. 
 
In the plane, Priyanka Chopra’s Alex Parrish flirts with a stranger, Ryan Booth with whom she hooks up with in a car, presumably a few minutes after the plane lands. Have to admit, girl’s got her priorities in place. 
 
The stranger, like all other guys in the universe, gets a little too curious and asks Priyanka her name to which he is shown his place when she unwilling to reveal her identity uncovers everything about him, and more in just five points. This scene is easily the best and then only watchable scene in the eight minutes of ‘Have we not seen this in every crime thriller ever?’ also known as Quantico. 
 
However, Chopra soon finds out that the elusive stranger turns out to be her new classmate in the training academy. Awkward alert. 
 
We also get a brief introduction into the lives of the other recruits and we’re intrigued by what Nimah Anwar’s (played by Yasmin Al Marsi) backstory is. 
 
All in all, the first eight minutes of Quantico reveals nothing that we haven’t seen before except Priyanka Chopra trying really hard to fit. Her accent does sounds believable, her acting not quite. And, she looks straight out of Dostana, for some reason. 
 
The icing on the cake however, is the last scene which takes us back to a bruised Priyanka Chopra lying amidst the wreckage and turns out it’s a site of an explosion. 
 
Totally did not guess that.
