The ship was hijacked by Somali pirates near Yemeni island of Socotra recently," it said. <br /><br /> "Working seamlessly with @indiannavy, the mission was successful with all the 17 crew on-board recovered safely," the IAF added. <br /><br /> In a statement, the Navy said the seaworthiness of MV Ruen is being assessed and the vessel carrying approximately 37,800 tonnes of cargo worth around USD 1 million will be brought safely to India. <br /><br /> "The culmination of the ongoing anti-piracy operation involving pirate ship Ruen in the Southern Indian Ocean Region highlights the commitment of the Indian Navy towards reinforcing peace and stability, and also to thwart the resurgence of piracy in the region," it said. <br /><br /> The Indian Navy deployed over 10 warships to keep a vigil over the strategic waterways following increasing attacks on cargo vessels in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthi militants. <br /><br /> In the midst of rising global concerns over the Houthi attacks, the Indian Ocean saw rising incidents of piracy.

IAF's C-17 aircraft executes precision airdrop in Arabian Sea, helps Navy seize hijacked vessel

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Indian commandos seized back a cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates over the weekend.</li><li>India is not associated with crack special forces — but this operation impressed analysts.</li></ul><p>Indian specialist commando units played a key role in seizing back a cargo ship that'd been hijacked by Somali pirates, giving the country a chance to flex its muscles.</p><p>The Malta-flagged cargo vessel, the Ruen, was hijacked in December 2023 near Yemen.</p><p>It was the first successful seizure of a vessel by Somali pirates since 2017, and added to the unrest around Somalia and the Red Sea.</p><p>Over the weekend, India took the Ruen back.</p><p>In a post on<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/indiannavy/status/1769036561163702518?s=20"> X, the Indian Navy</a> said the operation had taken 40 hours and resulted in all 17 hostages being freed and 35 pirates being arrested.</p><p>Dramatic<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/sidhant/status/1769353429808455922?s=20"> footage released by the Indian Navy </a>showed commandos parachuting from a navy plane into the sea near the hijacked vessel.</p><p>Analysts say the success of the operation highlights the effectiveness of India's navy units in fighting pirates.</p><p>Carl Schuster, a former US Navy captain, <a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/19/india/india-pirate-ship-capture-intl-hnk-ml/index.html">told CNN </a>the incident highlighted the professionalism of the Indian Navy and Delhi's marine commando force, known as MARCOS.</p><p class="paragraph inline-placeholder">"The Indian Navy itself is a highly trained and disciplined professional force," Schuster said.</p><p class="paragraph inline-placeholder">"MARCOS' nearly eight months of training is modeled after Britain's SAS. Despite a very intense selection process, only about 10% to 15% of those who enter the training graduate," he said.</p><p class="paragraph inline-placeholder">The unit has more than 30 years of experience conducting dangerous maritime operations.</p><p class="paragraph inline-placeholder">It's not the first ani-piracy operation undertaken recently by the MARCOs. India's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/who-are-marcos-indias-toughest-men-conducting-anti-piracy-operations-in-arabian-sea-6-key-facts-685049">WION news</a> reported in January that the unit freed 19 Pakistani nationals from a hijacked vessel in the Arabian Sea.</p><p class="paragraph inline-placeholder"><a target="_blank" href="https://thediplomat.com/2024/02/what-does-china-think-about-indias-increased-anti-piracy-patrols-amid-the-red-sea-crisis/">The Diplomat reported </a>that India had recently increased its anti-piracy operations in the Indian Ocean region in response to increased threats to shipping lanes.</p><p class="paragraph inline-placeholder"><a target="_blank" href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2024/03/indian-navy-and-air-force-conduct-complex-anti-piracy-operation/">Naval News commented</a> that the complex operation showcased "India's capability of protecting its maritime interests even at such a vast distance from the coast."</p><p>The most recent operation was carried out by navy vessels supported by helicopters and aircraft, the navy said.</p><p>"The vessel opened fire on the warship, which is taking actions [in accordance with] international law, in self-defense and to counter piracy, with minimal force necessary to neutralize the pirates' threat to shipping and seafarers," it said.</p><p>Somali pirate attacks spiked around 2011 but then sharply declined after an international coalition was formed to ensure the security of vessels traveling in the Red Sea. This vital global shipping lane links Europe and Asia via the Suez Canal.</p><p>But recently, piracy incidents have increased amid attacks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/houthi-attacks-ships-give-rebels-iran-intelligence-war-experts-2024-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">by Houthi militants in Yemen</a> on commercial shipping vessels.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240214-fears-that-pirates-are-returning-to-seas-off-somalia">The AFP news wire</a> reported that ships are slowing down while they wait for information on whether it's safe to enter the Red Sea, giving pirates an opportunity to attack the vessels.</p>

Sixty five micro UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) or <keyword id="397073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="spy-drones">spy drones</keyword> have been acquired for IAF's Garud Commando Force.<br />

For <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+navy">Indian Navy</a>, construction of two "midget submarines" or "chariots" is already underway at the cost of Rs 2,017 crore.<br />

The Garuds are also trained to destroy enemy assets like radars and aircraft as well as "lasing" high-value targets for friendly fighters, and also rescuing pilots who eject behind enemy lines.<br />

The new drones will have a range of over five kilometre and will be used for surveillance around vital airbases, counter-terrorism and covert operations.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the unmanned combat aerial vehicles are still a distant dream. The UCAVs can fire missiles on enemy targets before returning to re-arm for further missions.<br />

Some say prices <a href="http://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/The-One-Chart-That-Shows-Why-Oil-Prices-Have-To-Keep-Rising.html">have to keep rising</a>; others are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sandy-jadeja-technical-analysis-interview-oil-price-predictions-market-crash-dates-2016-7?r=UK&amp;IR=T">predicting another crash</a>.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The only thing that's predictable, it seems, is oil's unpredictability. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That's the sentiment behind a new Barclay's report. Researchers at the bank expect oil prices to reach $85 by 2019, a year sooner than previously forecast. But they also predict that the upward path will be more volatile than ever.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We continue to see a rocky road to recovery, even if the average annual average price is expected to increase," the report states. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are a few reasons why the casual observer might expect less volatility in oil prices. The biggest, the report says, is that many see shale as a new "swing supplier," leading to a more elastic supply. Instead of supply being stuck at a certain level if the price changes, shale can quickly come in to fill a shortage or shut down in reaction to a glut, allowing supply to react "more aggressively" to changes in prices and, in theory, balancing supply and demand. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But "theory may not equal reality," Barclay's warns. The structure of the market has changed too much. Consumers are becoming less active, but producers are becoming more so. Liquidity in financial markets is impaired, and investors are trading differently because of it. And in today's deflationary world, low oil prices don't necessarily generate a positive income effect, which means demand isn't working like it's supposed to. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On the other hand, many aspects of the oil industry and the macroeconomy right now suggest more volatility ahead. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The supply side is increasingly unreliable, due to non-price related issues like geopolitical unrest, labor issues, and environmental effects that have led to supply outages. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And if inventories are responsible for mitigating volatility, today's quickly declining inventories don't bode well for stable prices. Spare capacity as a share of demand is expected to decline over the medium term, Barclay's reports. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"When all producers are pumping at maximum capacity, there is no swing producer able to balance the market," the report states. It could get even harder to predict what will happen with oil prices

The iShares Global energy ETF, which does a decent job at tracking the industry as a whole, was down over 20%.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oil-price-falls-to-11-year-low-january-6th-2016-1">Oil prices tumbled</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-profit-margin-decline-signals-recession-2015-10">earnings dried up</a>, and there were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oil-jobs-still-declining-2015-6">massive layoffs</a>.</p><p>It can only go up from here, right?</p><p>Wrong, argue Oppenheimer analysts Fadel Gheit and Luis Amadeo.</p><p>"We think 2016 could be even worse than 2015 for energy stocks on declining oil and gas prices and deteriorating financial condition," wrote Gheit and Amadeo in a note.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/glimmer-of-hope-for-oil-price-recovery-2015-12">bull thesis</a> is that oil prices will recover as the glut of supply subsides, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deutsche-bank-current-low-oil-price-may-have-overshot-mark-2015-12">helping to lift earnings</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/activists-hedge-funds-like-energy-sector-2015-12">stock prices</a>. In the analysts opinion, this is far too optimistic.</p><p>"[Acceptable returns] can only be achieved if prices exceed $75/b this year or more than double their current levels, which, barring a major supply disruption, is highly unlikely, in our view," said the note.</p><p>Prices have been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-market-update-january-6-2016-1">trading at around $35/b recently</a>.</p><p>"Using strip prices, we expect nine of the 15 large E&amp;P companies we cover to have losses in 2015 and all 15 companies to have losses in 2016. The consensus estimates indicate that seven of the 15 companies will report losses in 2015 and eight in 2016."</p><p><span>Another story of hope is the idea companies can curtail the losses by reducing large spending on new machinery, as evidenced by the declining <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/baker-hughes-rig-counts-december-18-2015-12">Baker Hughes rig count</a>, which helps the bottom line and, again, decreases supply.</span></p><p><span>"Despite CAPEX and expense reductions, efficiency gains and well performance improvements, the deficit was funded with proceeds from asset sales and additional borrowing," said Gheit and Amadeo. 2015 was brutal for energy stocks, and one industry guru thinks 2016 might be even worse

That's a significant improvement over the three and a half hours it took for the now retired mach 2 Concorde to make the same trip. The Concorde was a joint venture between Airbus' two predecessors - France's Aerospatiale and British Aerospace.</p><p>The hypersonic jet would also completely demolish the seven to eight hours it takes a conventional airliner, such as Airbus' own A330, to cross the Atlantic.&#xa0;</p><p>In addition, Airbus predicts the patented craft will&#xa0;be able to complete trips like Paris to San Francisco or Tokyo to Los Angeles in just three hours.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="YouTube/PatentYogi" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55b7c713371d2210008ba726-960/screen_shot_2015-07-28_at_11_01_56_am.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dyrbRGkVKI">YouTube/PatentYogi</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div><p>In the patent, Airbus describes the craft as "an air vehicle including a fuselage, a gothic delta wing positioned either side of the fuselage, and a system of motors able to propel the air vehicle."</p><p>The hypersonic jet is powered by three different types of engines working in sequential order to get the craft aloft, into cruising altitude, and then up to its cruising speed of more than 3,000 mph.</p><p>To get off the ground, the craft will uses&#xa0;a pair of turbojets mounted underneath the fuselage as well as a rocket motor mounted in the rear. As the Airbus lifts off the runway, it will climb vertically like the Space Shuttle. Right before reaching the speed of sound, the turbojets shut down and retract into the belly of plane - leaving only the rocket motor to guide it up to an altitude of more than 100,000 feet.&#xa0;</p><p>At cruising altitude, the rocket motor will shut down and retract into the fuselage. In the 1970s, the&#xa0;Concorde was beset by complaints of sonic booms and noise pollution created by&#xa0;its four Rolls-Royce Olympus turbojet engines. Consequently, it was prevented from operating over land.&#xa0;<p>As a result, the supersonic Anglo-French airliner was never able to become the financially viable mainstream passenger transport its creators had hoped for. In civilian trim, the craft could serve as private jet or as an airliner with room&#xa0;for 20 passengers. In military trim, the jet could serve as a hypersonic transport for commandos or as a reconnaissance plane like the SR71 Blackbird.<p>In addition, Airbus has also proposed a variant armed with high-power electromagnetic pulse weapons to conduct precision strikes on high-value targets.&#xa0;</p><p>As with the majority of patented ideas, it's unlikely the jet&#xa0;will ever enter production.
