Army chief general <keyword id="7912696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="M-M-Naravane">M M Naravane</keyword> on Tuesday said that he was hopeful that the Indian and Chinese militaries will be able to reach an agreement on disengagement and de-escalation of tension in eastern Ladakh. In an address at a seminar, the army chief said senior military commanders of India and China are holding talks to iron out modalities for deescalation of tension in eastern Ladakh. "We are hopeful of reaching an agreement which is mutually acceptable and is really beneficial in keeping with the overarching policy guidelines," he said. The chief of Army staff also said that the situation in eastern Ladakh is quite stable. General Naravane was speaking at a conclave organised by Bharatshakti.in, a portal on defence and military issues. Referring to Indian troops deployed in the high-altitude region, he said they are equipped with appropriate clothing and weapons, and added that there is no shortage whatsoever. India and China are likely to hold another round of military talks to discuss specific proposals for a possible breakthrough in the long-negotiated disengagement process in eastern Ladakh. The eighth round of Corps Commander-level talks on Friday had broadly discussed disengagement of troops from specific friction points and both sides would like to take forward the "constructive" dialogue to the next round with detailed deliberations, sources had said. In a joint statement released earlier on Friday, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) described the talks as candid, in-depth and constructive. The statement said it was agreed to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and ensure that the frontline troops exercise restraint and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation. Nearly 50,000 troops of the Indian Army are currently deployed in a high state of combat readiness in various mountainous locations in eastern Ladakh in sub-zero conditions as multiple rounds of talks between the two sides have not yielded any concrete outcome yet to resolve the standoff. China has also deployed an equal number of troops, according to officials. The standoff between the two sides erupted in early May. Indian Army chief Naravane is hopeful of de-escalation of tensions between India and China in eastern Ladakh

Gen. Mukund Naravane is the senior most officer in the race. He is considered top contender for the job as he was given <a href="https://nenow.in/north-east-news/navarane-slated-take-eastern-command-seen-next-army-chief.html">charge of the Eastern Army</a>, in September 2018. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Naravane was commissioned into the 7th battalion The Sikh Light Infantry in 1980. Counter insurgency specialist Well known as a counter insurgency specialist in the Army, Naravane, in his 37 years of service has served in many Command and Staff appointments, in Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Northeast. He was also a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPFK) in Sri Lanka. Naravane’s shift to the Eastern Army came at a crucial time when insurgents were <a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2018/10/01/naravane-takes-charge-of-eastern-command-as-army-faces-credibility-crisis.html">reportedly</a> regrouping in neighbouring Myanmar. He was given the charge probably because Naravane was the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) in Nagaland --- which looks after the Indo-Myanmar border. He had also commanded the eastern brigade of the infantry. Naravane commanding the Eastern Command became more significant because he commanded the Strikes Corps of the Indian Army and was the <keyword id="32733" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Defence">Indian Defence</keyword> Attache in Myanmar. He was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army <keyword id="695871" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Training-Command">Training Command</keyword> prior to heading the Eastern Command. The General has served as an instructor at the Army War College, Mhow. He was decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2019, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2017, and the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015. The General holds a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from Chennai University, an M.Phil in Defence and Management Studies from DAVV, Indore. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from Punjabi University, Patiala.

The details of the meeting is yet to known. The ninth Corps Commander level talks between both the countries took place at the Moldo Meeting point almost two months of last dialogue. It started at 10.30 am on Sunday and ended at 2.30 a.m. on Monday. Lieutenant General P.G.K. Menon, the Corps Commander of Leh-based HQ 14 Corps, led the Indian delegation. India has sought complete disengagement and withdrawing of forces from the disputed areas. "We are prepared to hold our ground where we are for as long as it takes to achieve our national goals and interest," General Naravane had said. Since no thinning of troops happened the soldiers of both the countries are poised to remain exposed to minus 20 degrees Celsius.
