Yoga guru <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword>’s FMCG Company Patanjali has already taken the market share from the big daddies of the industry to become the favorite of the nation. Moving ahead, he is now focusing at the digital health space in the country, and is ready to take on start-ups like such as <keyword id="2798697" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lybrate">Lybrate</keyword> and <keyword id="1165142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Practo">Practo</keyword>. 
 
For this, the Haridwar-based company would be coming up with an online platform, called Chikitsalaya, exclusively for ayurvedic consultation and treatment. 
 
Industry experts are of the opinion that this would help the company, which was getting around five crore internet searches every month, speed up its outreach. 
 
"A company that manufactures its own drugs and sets up a digital consultation platform subsequently will have a multifold impact on its business," Saurabh Arora, founder &amp; CEO of Lybrate, told ET. Backed by Tiger Global, Lybrate is one of India’s largest online doctor consultation platforms. 
 As of now, Patanjali operates in the FMCG sector and sells products like ghee, soaps and honey, while its sister concern <keyword id="2830840" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Divya-Pharmacy">Divya Pharmacy</keyword> manufactures and sells Ayurvedic medicines. Besides this, Ramdev also has an ayurveda hospital and a medical college in his campus located near Haridwar. 
 "Absence of doctors and pharmacies is the main problem faced by traditional medicine practices such as ayurveda in the country. If Ramdev manages to launch an online consultation platform, he will be one of the forerunners in the business," Punit Kapoor, director of online pharma company <keyword id="3375612" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="BigChemist">BigChemist</keyword>, told ET. 
 
"Even large FMCG companies have started working on separate websites for their natural products. Online consultation means patients will not have to physically walk into a doctor's chamber. It means, reaching out to a global audience," he added.

Budget 2016 validates its intent to promote startup mindset in the country, says Lybrate founder Saurabh Arora

The young population of India has become wary of diseases cropping up because of an unhealthy lifestyle, pushing them to reach out to doctors for help on their prevention and early diagnosis. 
 As per Lybrate’s annual report, about 45% young people, falling in the age group 20-45 years, actively consult doctors for prevention of diseases that arise out of lifestyle issues, while the majority of others reach out to <keyword id="6354750" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="health">health</keyword>care experts for issues related to either sexual or mental health. 
 The top seven lifestyle issues, the report points out, that hovered greatly on the minds of young Indians which they want to stay away from include <keyword id="6359018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="diabetes">Diabetes</keyword>, Cardiovascular diseases, <keyword id="6355291" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer">Cancer</keyword> and Hypertension.

 Interactions around Diabetes witnessed a staggering growth of 250% over 2015, followed by Cardiovascular Diseases (210%), Cancer (195%), Hypertension (190%), <keyword id="6364492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Obesity">Obesity</keyword> (150%), Vitamin/Mineral Deficiency (150%) and COPD (140%). 45% of Indian Millenials consulted for lifestyle diseases in 2016

Companies and startups are ready to raid engineering and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=B-school+">B-school</a> campuses across India this placement season, adding to the fierce war for talent already raging between large e-Commerce companies and established old-world recruiters. 
 
The startups which are looking for fresh talents include ShopClues, LocalOye, Urban-Clap, PropTiger, Indus Insights, MyRefers, CodeNation, Embibe, Jombay, Lybrate and ShadowFax. 
 
Moreover, a survey of 11 startups suggests they will step up overall <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=campus+hiring+">campus hiring</a> to 770 students from the Class of 2016 compared with only 250 that they hired from the last batch. 
 
Bulk of this hiring will be across top engineering colleges and B-schools, including Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management. 
 
Don’t be disappointed if you are not studying in the above mentioned institutes as a handful will also recruit at leading undergraduate colleges including Shri Ram College of Commerce, Lady Shri Ram College and St Stephen's, and design schools such as National Institute of Design and National Institute of Fashion Technology. 
 
Now comes the most interesting part- salary! Average salaries offered by these startups range between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 18 lakh at engineering colleges and B-schools, say campus sources. Prop-Tiger, for instance, is paying upwards of Rs 15 lakh plus benefits at tech schools; CodeNation will pay around Rs 24 lakh. 
 
At least three of these startups — Lybrate, LocalOye and ShadowFax — are first-timers on campus while others, at the very least, are doubling last year's numbers. In some cases, hiring targets are going up five-fold or even 16-fold compared with last year. 
 
The strategies behind the hiring are discussed below: 
1. Depending on the kind of institutes, students are being hired for a variety of roles: from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=software+development+engineers">software development engineers</a>; core management &amp; data scientists; product, operations and marketing; merchant acquisition and servicing, to human resource management, product and graphic designers and even entrepreneurs in residence. Sanjay Mehta, a Mumbai-based angel investor who participated in and led 11 angel deals in 2015, says the reason why startups are so gung-ho about <keyword id="511161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="campus-hiring">campus hiring</keyword> is because they want to put this talent to work on cutting-edge technology and new delivery models. Not surprisingly, several institutes where placements have started, including Birla Institute of Technology &amp; Science-Pilani and <keyword id="75110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="NITs">NITs</keyword>, are seeing these startups go head-to-head with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=traditional+recruiters+">traditional recruiters</a> to hire talent. At other B-schools and <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> where pre-placement offers (PPOs) have started flowing in, it is again the startups that are leading the pack. 
 
2. Much high in numbers: The numbers speak for themselves. If ShopClues is revising its hiring intake from around 100 last year to 180-250 this time, realty portal PropTiger is doubling its target to 50. Even five-month-old B2B (business-to-business) hyperlocal delivery startup ShadowFax, which raised $300,000 from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Snapdeal">Snapdeal</a>'s founders and others in August followed by a $8.5-million Series A round by Fidelity's proprietary investment arm Eight Roads Ventures barely a month later, is looking to hire from IITs, <keyword id="46923" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIMs">IIMs</keyword> and other leading management institutes for its technology, data science and operations teams. 
 
3. Tapping more institutes: In the process, these companies are reaching out to many more institutes this year. "If there is a campus that attracts bright minds of the country, we want to be there. This includes other engineering colleges as well as top colleges in economics and commerce," says Saurabh Sharma, founder &amp; chief executive officer of Indus Insights. The Big Data firm made 40 offers last year, mostly at the top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras). This year, it plans to make 100-plus, including at NITs (Trichy, Warangal, etc), SRCC, LSR, Christ College and Indian School of Business. 
 Similarly, Delhi-based mobile services marketplace UrbanClap, which hired 30 business development and operations specialists from <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> last year, is extending its reach to several new institutes, including <keyword id="6431668" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Delhi">IIT-Delhi</keyword> and IIM-Ahmedabad as it gears up to take on 80-100 this year. 
 
Salaries apart, the other drawing factors include the opportunity to work on challenging problems. "We don't have any glass ceilings. Freshers could be running entire teams within six months of joining," says Aditi Avasthi, founder and CEO, Embibe. "Students are opting for startups aggressively as some of the roles offered by them are quite challenging and inclined with their aspirations," sums up Rahul Katyal, placement manager at IIT-Bombay.

Gear up to face interviews! Engineering and business schools to witness over three-fold jump in recruitments in India

<keyword id="2067730" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Crayon-Data">Crayon Data</keyword>, a Singapore-based big data firm, is the recent one to join the league of a dozen startups that have raised funding from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ratan+tata">Ratan Tata</a>.
 This personal investment from the chairman emeritus of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> comes just three months after he joined as a senior adviser to Jungle Ventures, the Singapore-based VC which has invested in Crayon. "We are excited and honored. To meet <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> and have our vision validated by him is an accolade in itself," said Srikant Sastri, co-founder of Crayon Data. 

	The company, co-founded in 2012 by IIM Calcutta graduates Sastri and Suresh Shankar, has raised $10 million in funding from Singapore-based Jungle Ventures and Spring Seeds so far. It employs 100 people within offices spread across New York, Dubai, Chennai, Singapore and London.
 

	Crayon has an engine that helps large enterprises deliver personalized choices to their consumers. It is developing what it calls a "consumer taste fabric", which maps choices across 15 categories, using machine-learning and complex algorithms. This taste fabric is then mapped to vast internal (enterprise) and external (online) data sets to provide a set of personalized choices to consumers.
 Tata, after stepping down from an active role in the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword>, has become an influential investor in startups. He has put his money into several internet companies and startups including Ola, Cardekho, Paytm, healthcare platform Lybrate, lingerie etailer Zivame and women's clothing brand Kaaryah. In addition to Jungle, Tata serves as an adviser with Kalaari Capital and IDG Ventures. He has invested in nearly a dozen of Kalaari's portfolio companies including <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, UrbanLadder, Holachef, YourStory and Bluestone. 

	"We have always strongly believed in Crayon's proposition. Srikant and Suresh, with their years of experience in Marketing and Analytics, have always had a clear vision of the value Crayon can bring to consumer-facing enterprises," said Anurag Srivastava of Jungle Ventures said.

India’s IT cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Gurgaon are becoming boomtowns for healthcare start-ups, and with investors willing to fund dreams, there seems to be an interest in the space. However, this is limited to preventive healthcare, fitness bands and patient awareness. We’re talking about ‘tech-enablers’ for healthcare, like Practo, Lybrate and the rest. 
 
Venture funding in healthcare globally reached a record $4.5 billion in 302 deals in 2015. With a four-fold hike from 2011, you’d expect the world’s newest startup hub to be churning out health startups like…

Why hasn’t India seen more core <keyword id="3172082" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="healthcare-startups">healthcare startups</keyword>? 
Medicine and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=healthcare+startups&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">healthcare startups</a> fall under two categories – research-based ones that make new medicinal products or ones that use existing tech. 
 
The top 5/10 pharma companies hog all the innovation in the first category. That’s because this is a capital-intensive space that needs years of investment before reaping profits. It’s not easy for a startup to have access to that kind of capital, research facilitates or talent. 
 
You haven’t raised billions. How have you stayed afloat? 
We’re bootstrapping. We started off with a lab that can do basic research, and started importing tech from the US and Switzerland. As the cash flow increased, we started investing in our business. 
 
Obviously we could have done things faster if we’ve had access to a larger fund pool. However, this is a field where sustainability is the key motivating factor. 
 
How can VCs boost core healthcare startups? 
To invest in a research-based healthcare startup, the VCs mindset has to change. They need to understand they’re here for a long run. It requires a lot of patience and capital. There are few funds who invest in these areas, and they’re usually ex-Pharma or ex-healthcare guys. They understand healthcare better than tech. 
 
VCs have always invested in places where they can make money in 5-7 years. In medicine or healthcare, it takes 10-15 years to bring a product to the market. Sometimes after 8-10 years of research you still aren’t able to make a product. 
 
Do you have to be a Pharma/medicine guy to have a startup of your own? 
You do need an experienced CPO or CIO. However, when it comes to running the business, you need someone who knows how to make money. Even in bigger companies across the world, you’ll see a man’s background is not always in line with his current position. It’s not necessary. 
 
True that if you’re from medicine or pharma, you’ll have a better idea of the field. For me, the idea came because I was in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=healthcare+marketing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">healthcare marketing</a> for a while. 
 
Am I better off with a pharma-based co-founder or CPO? 
It all depends on the opportunity. However, in today’s times, no matter what business you’re in, you do need a lot of strong tech back-end. 
 
What can the government do to help Pharma-specific startups? 
We’ve been in active talks with several government agencies. They’ve been very forth-coming in their approach, and we expect some friendly policies by the end of the year.
