<ul class="summary-list"><li>Researchers think they've solved the 2,200-year-old mystery of the Antikythera mechanism.</li><li>The ancient device, found in a shipwreck, likely followed a Greek lunar calendar.</li></ul><p>Last year, Graham Woan knew just how he wanted to spend his Christmas break: trying to solve the 2,200-year-old mystery of the oldest known "computer" in the world.</p><p>Known as the Antikythera mechanism, the bronze device is a mechanical computer with interlocking gears. In the second century BCE, a user would have used its rings and evenly spaced holes to chart future celestial events, such as eclipses.</p><p>But how many of those evenly spaced holes existed has been a mystery and holds the key to determining exactly how the computer functioned.</p><p>YouTuber Chris Budiselic has long been <a target="_blank" href="https://bhi.co.uk/by-the-light-of-the-moon-a-lunar-calendar-on-the-antikythera-mechanism/">fascinated</a> by the mechanism and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML4tw_UzqZE&amp;list=PLZioPDnFPNsHnyxfygxA0to4RXv4_jDU2">started</a> creating his own version seven years ago but wasn't sure how many holes to include. </p><p>Based on some of Budisic's published research, University of Glasgow astronomers, including Woan,<strong> </strong>turned to statistical modeling techniques to find the answer.</p><p>"It struck me as an interesting problem, and one that I thought I might be able to solve in a different way during the Christmas holidays, so I set about using some statistical techniques to answer the question," Woan said in a university <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/news/headline_1086643_en.html">press release</a>.</p><p>Based on the number of holes, the researchers found, the device follows a lunar calendar instead of an Egyptian one, as some previous research suggested.</p><h2 id="88229c20-3e52-49a3-ac2a-ac07f07cf6a4">A shipwreck full of ancient treasures</h2><div type="image" title="antikythera mechanism analog ancient greece" height="3569" width="5354" msid="111500237" hostid="261" sizebytes="1514156"></div><p>The Antikythera mechanism is just one intriguing finding from a 2,000-year-old shipwreck that divers first discovered in 1900. Divers waiting out a storm found the remains near the Greek island of Antikythera.</p><p>Excavations have uncovered three life-size marble horse statues, coins, jewelry, and other treasures, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whoi.edu/know-your-ocean/ocean-topics/ocean-human-lives/underwater-archaeology/antikythera-shipwreck/">Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute</a>. But the Antikythera mechanism is perhaps the most unique discovery of them all. <br /><br />It's about the size of a shoebox, is broken into six pieces, and has eroded from its time underwater. The mechanism is so sophisticated that some thought it had to be a modern device that got mixed in with the ancient artifacts, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/1006146">according to</a> Derek John de Solla Price. He helped discover the device's function in the 1970s.</p><p>X-ray images from 2005 gave researchers new details about the device. And in 2020, Budiselic and his colleagues used the images to measure the positions of the holes and <a target="_blank" href="https://bhi.co.uk/antikytheramechanism/">proposed</a> the mechanism had between 347 and 367 holes. If it had closer to 350 holes, it would have followed the lunar calendar. If it had 365, it would have been modeled on the Egyptian calendar.</p><p>But it was difficult to nail down an exact number because of the device's diminished condition.</p><p>After learning about Budiselic's research, Woan first used Bayesian analysis, calculating different probabilities of the total number of holes based on the position and number of holes in the remaining pieces of bronze. He learned that it was hundreds of times more likely that the device had 354 holes than 360 holes.</p><p>Woan's colleague Joseph Bayley followed up the research by modifying techniques used to study <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ligo-gravitational-wave-detector-more-powerful-squeezing-light-2019-12">gravitational waves</a>, which are ripples in space-time. His results agreed with Woan's; there were likely either 354 or 355 holes in the ring. </p><p>In other words, there's a much higher probability that the mechanism tracked the Greek lunar year instead of the Egyptian one. It was capable of calculating planets' positions incredibly accurately for its time.</p><p>The finding reinforces the impressive craftsmanship and knowledge it took to create the device. "The precision of the holes' positioning would have required highly accurate measurement techniques and an incredibly steady hand to punch them," Bayley said in the press release.</p><p>The two have published their research in the peer-reviewed <a target="_blank" href="https://bhi.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07-HJJuly24-AOTM-2.pdf">Horological Journal</a>.</p>

<p>The Commission of the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, known unofficially as Mutawaa, based its warning on a religious edict from the top committee of Saudi clerics banning such celebrations, the newspaper said.</p>
<p>Saudi Arabia follows the Muslim lunar calendar, unlike all other Gulf states that use the Gregorian calendar.</p>
<p>Members of the commission enforce the kingdom's rule of strict segregation between sexes, and have traditionally forced women to cover from head to toe when in public.</p>
<p>They also go around shops to make sure they are shuttered during prayer times.</p>
<p>The religious police have been accused of abusing their powers.</p>
<p>But since January last year, the religious police have become more discreet with the appointment of their new chief, cleric Abdulatif bin Abdulaziz al-Sheikh, who banned the use of unmarked cars.</p>
<p>Mutawaa also traditionally banned the sale of red roses and gifts for Valentine's Day on February 14.</p>

Saudi Religious Police Warn Against New Year's Celebrations 

<br /> The year 2014 is just two days old, marking the beginning of yet another <keyword id="89477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gregorian-calendar">Gregorian calendar</keyword> year. But revellers who painted the town red and want more party time need not lose heart. Officially, the year has taken off on January 1, but the regional variants of the New Year’s Day still prevail in a country like India – home to a colourful mélange of cultures and traditions. So we are yet to experience a spate of <keyword id="471694" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-Year-festivities">New Year festivities</keyword>, celebrated from <keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> to Kanyakumari, from the <keyword id="53478" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="North-East">north-east</keyword> to the western coast.<br />
 <br /> Interestingly, both the Gregorian calendar (introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582) and the previous <keyword id="89476" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Julian-calendar">Julian calendar</keyword> (first implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 BC) kick off on the same day – January 1. The Romans originally dedicated the first day of the year to Janus, the god of gates, doors and beginnings, and January, the first month of the year, was named after him. Later on, most nations in Western Europe officially started the New Year from January 1. As in other South Indian states, auspicious sighting and other rituals are observed as part of the celebration; <keyword id="51941" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="firecrackers">firecrackers</keyword> are burst and an elaborate <keyword id="1998461" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Festive-lunch">festive lunch</keyword> called <em><keyword id="1998473" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sadya">sadya</keyword></em> is served.<br />

Also known as <em><keyword id="989326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Naba-Barsha">Naba Barsha</keyword></em>, <keyword id="27928" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lord-Ganesha">Lord Ganesha</keyword> and <keyword id="462664" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Goddess-Lakshmi">Goddess Lakshmi</keyword>, deities of wealth, are worshipped on this day while businesses open fresh ledgers known as <em><keyword id="1998474" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Haal-Khata">Haal Khata</keyword></em>. There's an optical illusion that the moon — any moon — looks larger than usual when it's near the horizon.</p><p>So folks who see the full moon rise from the horizon around sunset may think it looks larger than normal. These bright moonlit nights give farmers a little extra time to harvest their crops.</p><p>This year's harvest moon will reach its peak at 5:58 a.m. ET on September 29, according to <a href="https://www.almanac.com/content/full-moon-names" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Old Farmer's Almanac</a>. </p><p><strong>The next harvest moon:</strong> September 29, 2023</p><h2>Here are some of the many names assigned to full moons throughout the year.</h2><div type="image" title="person takes phone photo of another person holding a child in front of yellow full moon" height="1500" width="2000" msid="103970900" hostid="261"></div><p>Across North America and Europe, people have used full moons to track months and seasons for thousands of years, naming each one based on the seasonal changes it indicates.</p><p>Different languages and cultures characterized their moons differently, sometimes based on agricultural cycles, sometimes on natural phenomena.</p><p>The names assigned to full moons are often attributed to the native Algonquian peoples, who share a family of languages and originate from the area that today ranges from New England as far west as Lake Superior.</p><p>Colonial settlers across North America adopted their own version of the indigenous names, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.</p><h2>October: "hunter's moon," "blood moon," "dying grass moon," "travel moon"</h2><div type="image" title="hunting shooting guns dogs pheasants" height="1995" width="2661" msid="103970901" hostid="261"></div><p>These names refer to the time of year when leaves have fallen, the deer are fat, and animals are coming into harvested fields to eat what's left. Historically, hunters took advantage of October <a href="https://www.farmersalmanac.com/full-moon-dates-and-times" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to store meat for the winter</a>.</p><p>Some associate <a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/2293/october-2022-the-next-full-moon-is-the-hunters-moon-the-travel-dying-grass-sanguine-or-blood-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this month's</a> blood moon or "sanguine moon" with hunting, and it's different from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-blood-moon-total-lunar-eclipse-how-to-watch-2021-5">blood moon caused by a lunar eclipse</a>. Europeans dubbed this the rose moon, and other cultures called it the hot moon because it harkens summer heat ahead.</p><p>"Mead" or "honey moon" are other European names <a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/2364/the-next-full-moon-is-the-strawberry-moon-mead-or-honey-moon-and-a-full-moon-weekend/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">for this</a> full moon. Some people also think the moon appears more reddish in color this month because of the heat.</p><p><strong>The next sturgeon moon: </strong>August 19, 2024</p><h2>Some full moons are called supermoons or micromoons. The contemporary terms refer to how large and small the moon looks at various points in its elliptical orbit.</h2><div type="image" title="A supermoon above a cityscape" height="2287" width="3049" msid="103970913" hostid="261"></div><p>Supermoons occur when the moon is at perigee — the closest point to Earth. They can cause stronger ocean tides and weather events.</p><p>Micromoons are the opposite, occurring at apogee — when the moon is furthest from Earth. They can reduce the variation in spring tides by <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/micro-moon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2 inches</a>. Micromoons appear about 14% smaller than supermoons, and sometimes seem dimmer, since the area illuminated by the sun appears 30% smaller, according to <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/micro-moon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TimeandDate.com</a>.</p><p>Since the International Astronomical Union has not officially defined supermoons or micromoons, astronomers disagree on which full moons get the designation.</p><p><strong>The next full supermoon:</strong> August 19, 2024</p><p><strong>The next full micromoon:</strong> February 24, 2024</p><h2>Blue moons are like special bonuses. That happens because the lunar month is only 29 days long, while the Gregorian calendar month is usually 30 or 31 days long.</p><p>The moon doesn't actually appear blue on these occasions. Nike is celebrating the Chinese New Year with a holiday-themed sneaker collection - here's where to buy them

<p>On Sept. 27, you can see the first "supermoon" total lunar eclipse in 30 years.</p><p>The moon will turn red, which is normal for a lunar eclipse, but this rare event will be bigger and brighter than those of the past few decades.</p><p>But the best view won't be visible from Earth. So why doesn't the planet simply block all the sunlight? And where does the red color come from? And what is a supermoon, anyway?</p><p>We've got your answers below.</p><h2>What is a supermoon?</h2><p>Supermoons happen once every year, when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth during its fullest phase.</p><p>This happens because the moon doesn't orbit the Earth in a perfect circle - it moves in an ellipse. That ellipse is a little off-center, too, so once a month the moon comes closer to Earth than at any other point.</p><p>As a different NASA <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=21&amp;v=vKAw_wrIr5s">video</a> shows, when the moon becomes full at its closest point to Earth (called "perigee"), it will appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>Why does the moon (and Earth) appear red?</h2><p>During a lunar eclipse, the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, and the whole surface of the moon is cast with that shadow:</p><p><div></div></p><p>But instead of just blocking out the moon completely, as you might expect, the astronomical event makes the moon appear red for about an hour:</p><p><div></div></p><p>The moon looks red during the eclipse for the same reason sunrises and sunsets appear red and orange.</p><p>As light from the Sun hits Earth's atmosphere, the air scatters it. Bluer, shorter wavelengths of light scatter more than the longer, redder wavelengths of light.
