In the past year, the startup has downsized from 80-90 employees to a mere 46.</p>
<p>While its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lot18-lost-4-senior-executives-in-the-last-month-2012-5">previous layoffs </a>coincided with sections of the site folding, this has more to do with a change in the entire business model.</p>
<p>Lot18 emerged in 2010 as a flash sales site for wine; now it's repositioning itself as a subscription company like Direct Wines. Lot18 is hoping to add some predictability to its revenue stream by charging users either $99 for six bottles per month or $149 for 12 bottles.</p>
<p>Philip James, one of Lot18's founders, will be leading the subscription business charge. Other executives are departing. Former VP of Product Andrew Koch recently left, AllThingsD points out, and chief counsel Barbara Anderson is also rumored to be leaving. Four other executives left over the summer.</p>
<p>The move is also an effort to minimize Lot18's burn rate. It spends a lot of money on user acquisition marketing campaigns, as well as on overhead to run the flash sales business.</p>
<p>"We need to resource according to our new business model and operate the existing business more efficiently with considerably less burn," new CEO <keyword id="1782299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jay-Sung">Jay Sung</keyword> said in a statement.</p>
<p>It's the first big decision he's made since becoming CEO. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lot18-wine-startup-ceo-2012-12">Sung was promoted from his CMO position last month</a>; before that, the startup was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/layoffs-at-lot18-2012-6">operating without a lead executive</a>.</p>
<p>Times weren't always tough for Lot18. The New York startup came out of the gates strong and ramped up to 500,000 users in a matter of months. It attracted $30 million from Accel Partners in November 2011 and was reportedly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lot18-on-track-to-generate--50-million-this-year-and-it-just-launched-an-iphone-app-2012-5">on track to generate multi-millions in its first year.</a></p>

<p>James road a motorcycle 17,000 miles around the world raising money for charity before he suffered a bad accident. He's since recovered and moved back to New York to launch a new wine startup, <a href="http://themiraclemachine.net/#">The Miracle Machine.</a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Miracle Machine's Kickstarter page will launch in the next week or two. It's like a Soda Stream - a contraption that lets anyone make their own soda - but for wine. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Miracle Machine is an affordable device that fits on a kitchen counter. It turns water and a handful of ingredients (available for purchase on James' website) into wine in three days. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Wine recipes will be available via mobile app and users can choose whether they want to create a Merlot or </span>a Cabernet Sauvignon. The device has a fermentation chamber that " uses an array of electrical s<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>ensors, transducers, heaters and pumps to provide a controlled environment for the primary and, as needed, secondary fermentation stages."</span><span> </span></span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Jesus made water into wine; with all the technology we have available today why can't we do the same?" James had joked. In the morning, the pair thought about that idea seriously and set out to build the product over the next twelve months. </span></p>

Lot18 Founder Has Invented A Tiny Home Device That Turns Water Into Wine In 3 Days

<ul><li>Pharmacy retail chain Medplus Health Services is looking to raise ₹1,639 crore through IPO.</li><li>The company offers both offline and online sales of pharmaceutical products through website and mobile application.</li><li>Azim Premji’s PI Opportunities Fund is among the promoters of the company selling its shares through the IPO.</li></ul>Hyderabad-based pharmacy retail chain Medplus Health Services’ ₹1,398 crore initial public offering (IPO) is all set to open today, December 13, and close on December 15. <br /><br />The IPO consists of a fresh issue of ₹600 crore worth of shares and an offer for sale of shares worth ₹798.29 crore by selling shareholders. 18 shareholders will be selling shares in the IPO including PI Opportunities fund, which is an affiliate of PremjiInvest. PremjiInvest is the family office of billionaire Azim Premji, founder chairman of Wipro.<br /><br />The company is India's second-largest pharmacy retailer in terms of the number of stores and revenue. It sells a wide range of products, including pharmaceutical and wellness products -- medicines, vitamins, medical devices and test kits, and fast-moving consumer goods -- home and personal care The line of wine from manufacturers Lot18 and MGM was canceled just hours after it was officially revealed and went on sale.</p><p><a href="https://people.com/tv/the-handmaids-tale-wine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a> revealed the wine on Tuesday and said that those interested could start purchasing any or all three wines available. The wines were named after female main characters on the show: Offred, Ofglen, and Serena Joy.</p><p>But by that night, the story was updated to say "<span>After further consideration, Lot18 and MGM have decided to cancel the line of wines inspired by '</span>The Handmaid's Tale<span>.'" A Lot18 representative also confirmed to <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2018/07/and-the-handmaids-tale-wine-has-already-been-pulled.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vulture</a> the cancellation.</span></p><p><span>While the line of wines may be canceled, the <a href="https://www.lot18.com/product/8783/mgm-internal---2017-offred-pays-du2019oc-pinot-noir-duo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lot18 website</a> lists the Offred wine as "sold out."</span></p><p>The wine was scrutinized online on Tuesday. The Hulu show is about a dystopia America where women have little freedom, so the wine was viewed by some as an offensive and tone-deaf marketing ploy.</p><p>Before they were canceled, the wines had descriptions inspired by their respective characters.&#xa0;</p><p>For instance, the Offred&#xa0;<span>2017 Pays d'Oc Pinot Noir&#xa0;</span>was described as: "<span>Completely stripped of her rights and freedom, Offred must rely on the one weapon she has left to stay in control - her feminine wiles. This French Pinot Noir is similarly seductive, its dark berry fruit and cassis aromatics so beguiling it seems almost forbidden to taste. <p>Two weeks ago, we wrote about Philip James' new startup, The Miracle Machine. James co-founded Lot18, a wine sale company, and we were interested in his next venture. </p>
<p>The Miracle Machine, James said, was a kitchen appliance that could turn water into wine with a few extra ingredients and recipes on a mobile app. Business Insider wrote <span>one of - if not the first - </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/miracle-machine-how-to-make-wine-at-home-2014-3">articles on The Miracle Machine</a>. Ultimately, 600 publications wrote about James' device and the articles were read 500 million times.</p>
<p>The Miracle Machine was a hoax and we were duped. Here's why we fell for James' prank. </p>

<p>In late February, I met a former Lot 18 employee for lunch. We discussed James; he left the company late last year and now, this person said, he was working on a new startup.</p>
<p>Lot18 was a wine sale site that raised more than $30 million before shuttering products and laying off most of its staff. The new startup was being circulated in an email chain among other former Lot18ers and it was called "The Miracle Machine." </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I checked out the website and it looked legitimate. It listed James and a fellow Lot18 executive, Kevin Boyer, as the product's founders. They even made a video showcasing the product and came up with a founding story.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Lot18 was one of the first New York startups I reported on at Business Insider. I covered all of its highs and lows. I haven't always written nice things about James' company, but there has always been a mutual respect between James and I. Or so I thought.</span></p>
<p><span>I emailed James o</span>n February 28 about Miracle Machine:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I stumbled across your new startup, the wine maker. I was thinking about writing up your new venture. Any interest in chatting about it? It's good to see you're still in the same startup space."</p>
<p>On March 1, James wrote me back:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I want to wait until we get it launched on kickstarter first - that should be very soon. Next week I hope, until then we're in a bit of a holding pattern."</p>
<p>I didn't want to wait until the rest of the world knew about Miracle Machine, so I asked if he'd mind me writing about his startup sooner:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"If you don't mind, I'd like to go ahead and post a story about what you're up to and then when you're ready for launch I'd love to chat with you and see a demo (or even past failed experiments with the device)."</p>
<p>James wrote back and said "OK."</p>
<p>With James' confirmation of Miracle Machine and our past working relationship, I felt fine hitting publish.</p>

<p>A few days later, James sent me another email.</p>
<p>"Wow. You set off an avalanche of press. Was not expecting that!" </p>
<p>Today, I received another email from James.</p>
<p>"I think this will make you smile," he typed and attached a press release announcing the hoax.</p>
<p>I was<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> furious and called James. He apologized for not telling me the truth and said he lied because of an non-disclosure agreement he had signed with a PR agency. The hoax, he explained, was for a charity called "Wine to Water." To drum up press for it, James says a global PR director, Scott Beaudoin of MSL, decided to dupe the media.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>"I'm sorry you're upset," James told me when I called him. "But I think the tradeoff was worth it."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">To the people I helped dupe by being duped myself, I'm sorry. I made a big mistake.</span></span></p>

There Is No Machine That Turns Water Into Wine In 3 Days - Here's Why I Was Duped

<p>Will Ferrel has been relentlessly promoting his upcoming film "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-anchorman-2-trailers-2013-10">Anchorman 2</a>" as his ridiculous news anchor persona <keyword id="1960210" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ron-Burgundy">Ron Burgundy</keyword>. His <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dodge-sales-from-will-ferrells-ron-burgundy-commercials-2013-11">Dodge Durango commercials</a> gave the SUV a 60 percent boost in sales in October, Boston's Emerson College renamed their communications school after him for a day, and he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ron-burgundy-curling-2013-12">co-hosted the Canadian curling trials</a> Sunday night.</p>

10 Tech Things You Need To Know This Morning

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Consumer products have long been shunned by the venture community due to high capital&#xa0;requirements, low multiples and margin pressure from online retailers.<p>As such, Dollar Shave Club's recent $1 billion acquisition by Unilever came as a surprise to many. In a sense, the acquisition not only disrupted the razor market, it arguably disrupted the entire venture paradigm by making <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> goods en vogue again.</p><p>Unfortunately, most of the startups intent on following Dollar Shave Club's lead are doomed to fail, as a&#xa0;"perfect storm" of unique factors must be present for a fledgling consumer products company to&#xa0;challenge entrenched and well-capitalized incumbents.</p><p>Nevertheless, we believe we have identified (and in some cases, invested in) a handful of companies&#xa0;that may have the impetus to flourish and become "the next Dollar Shave Club".</p><p>To understand why, we first need to look at what made the company so successful.</p><h2>The three drivers of Dollar Shave Club's success</h2><p>Although Dollar Shave Club undoubtedly makes a fine razor, we believe that the product was incidental&#xa0;to the company's success.</p><p>DSC flourished because it exploited three key structural weaknesses in the razor market, namely the fact&#xa0;that: a) costs were bloated due to an entrenched monopoly, b) consumers were hesitant to purchase&#xa0;razors online and c) incumbents were using outdated marketing strategies.</p><p><strong>Success Driver #1: Inefficient Market Dominated by a Monopoly</strong></p><p>For years, Gillette used their dominance of the $3 billion US razor market to mark-up their products by&#xa0;over 167%. Coupled with additional charges inserted by retailers, this made shaving tools unnecessarily&#xa0;expensive. Even today, four Gillette Fusion cartridges can sell for over $20.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Dollar Shave Club was able to exploit this inefficiency by disintermediating the supply chain and offering&#xa0;lower prices. The company peddled a basic razor with 5 cartridges at $1 per month, and a top-of- the-line model with 4 cartridges for $9 per month - both significant discounts to incumbent products.<p><strong>Success Driver #2: Consumer Reluctance to Purchase Eyeglasses Online</strong></p><p>The company was also able to move an obstinate product online by building strong customer&#xa0;relationships.</p><p>If razors were easy to sell on the internet, Gillette would have likely done so years ago. But that wasn't&#xa0;the case, as fewer than 8% of consumers purchased razor blades online in 2013.</p><p>To bridge this gap and gain buyer trust, Dollar Shave Club made building strong customer relationships&#xa0;its top priority. For example, the company:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Offered an unconditional money-back guarantee with no need to return used razors or&#xa0;cartridges, which made trying the product riskless.</span></li><li>Successfully translated its brand voice into a potent unboxing experience, with their&#xa0;trademark confident and sardonic sense of humor reflected in the "Welcome to the&#xa0;Club" card that every new customer received.</li><li>Employed unscripted customer service, an approach that is "high cost, [and] difficult to&#xa0;execute"&#xa0;but "worth it" according to The LA Times.</li></ul><p>These tactics solidified the brand and help spur the growth of the online razor market, which has more&#xa0;than tripled since 2013.</p><p><strong>Success Driver #3: Incumbents Employed Antiquated Marketing Tactics</strong></p><p>Finally, Dollar Shave Club leveraged the viral opportunities inherent in online distribution to achieve&#xa0;over $200 million in revenue in less than five years.&#xa0;By utilizing founder Michael Dubin's improv background, Dollar Shave Club was able to create the iconic&#xa0;"our blades are f**king great" video, which cost only $4,500 to produce and reaped over 20M views on&#xa0;YouTube.</p><p><div></div></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>And that's just the beginning, the company has continued to create strong content and couple it with a&#xa0;highly streamlined, tested and optimized sales funnel that ends with a built-in referral loop.</p><p>Combining this marketing engine with top-notch customer service and superior prices has been a boon&#xa0;for Dollar Shave Club, one that - according to Fortune - has catapulted it to an 8% share of the $3 billion&#xa0;US market for razors and blades in only three years.</p><p>In short, Dollar Shave Club succeeded because its opponent was a dinosaur, so who's next?</p><h2><strong>The Original Consumer Products Disruptor</strong></h2><p>As discussed above, candidates for the "next Dollar Shave Club" will: 1) disrupt an entrenched&#xa0;monopoly or oligopoly, 2) successfully move a stubborn product online by building customer&#xa0;relationships and 3) create a viral growth engine.</p><p>One company that fits this bill nicely is Warby Parker - who in many ways represents the vanguard of&#xa0;the shifting paradigm in retail goods, achieving a $1.2 billion valuation over a year ago.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Warby is able to offer a significantly lower price point by undercutting Luxottica, the vertically-integrated behemoth that controls 80% of the eyewear market.<p>As Warby Parker co-CEO Neil Blumenthal explains in Forbes, the original idea for the company "was&#xa0;really about bypassing retailers, bypassing the middlemen that would mark up lenses 3-5x what they&#xa0;cost, so we could just transfer all of that cost directly to consumers and save them money."</p><p>Like Dollar Shave Club, the company has also transitioned its product online by building strong customer&#xa0;relationships - prior to Warby, fewer than 1% of consumers had purchased glasses online.</p><p>But simplifying the buying process with riskless home try-ons, easy returns, and personalized sales reps&#xa0;allowed Warby to create a world-class brand based on a foundation of trust.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>This helped the company catalyze a 50% growth in the online eyeglass market in fewer than three years,&#xa0;and created a viable alternative to traditional distribution channels.<p>Finally, Warby Parker took the lead in the direct-to- consumer marketing revolution and utilized digital&#xa0;channels to achieve 50% of its growth from word of mouth and quickly capture market share.</p><p>Popular tactics employed by the firm include:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">PR: Launched in 2010 with feature stories in Vogue and GQ.</span></li><li>Guerilla influencer marketing: Invited 40+ fashion editors to a "secret" event at the New York&#xa0;public library in 2011.</li><li>UGC: Leveraged the fact that over 51% of millennials trust user-generated content most in a&#xa0;purchasing decision, and inundated their social media feeds with customer submissions.</li><li>Cross-platform social media marketing: According to the National Retail Federation, "in 2011,&#xa0;[Warby Parker] had an average of 33 photos per day posted on their Facebook wall from&#xa0;customers; 56 mentions on Twitter every hour; and saw nearly 700 tagged photos with the&#xa0;hashtag #warbyparker posted in four months on Instagram."</li></ul><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">These strategies stood in stark opposition to the antiquated paid media tactics of Luxottica, and&#xa0;</span>provided Warby with a powerful recipe for low cost hyper-growth.</p><h2><strong>Winc is Poised to Disrupt an Inefficient Wine Market</strong></h2><p>Another potential candidate for the Dollar Shave Club crown is Winc (formerly Club W) -a subscription-based, direct-to- consumer winery and one of Tiller's investments.</p><p>Like the eyeglass and razor markets, the wine industry is archaic and inefficient. Not only is it&#xa0;dominated by an oligopoly where the top 4 players control over 60% of the market, it's plagued by a&#xa0;prohibition-era law that mandates a three-tier distribution system.</p><p>In other words, the middlemen are entrenched, and that leads to a significant markup.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Fortunately, Winc is leveraging laws that allow direct-to- consumer shipping in 44 states to craft massive&#xa0;savings for the consumer.</p><p>To be clear, this isn't the first time someone has tried this - Wine.com, Amazon and Lot18 have all&#xa0;thrown their hat in the ring - but none have been able to break the existing paradigm. In fact, The Wall&#xa0;Street Journal estimates that only 2% to 4% of wine is sold online.</p><p>Much of this is due to the fact that the aforementioned companies have done little to challenge the&#xa0;status quo. Wine.com acts primarily as a retailer and Amazon and Lot18 operate on a marketplace&#xa0;model. That means that all these firms are subject to the same bloated supply chain, and therefore&#xa0;offer little additional value to the consumer.</p><p>Winc changes that dynamic through its direct-to- consumer model, and uses the savings it generates&#xa0;from vertical integration to lower prices and entice customers to buy online.</p><p>The company also employs several industry best practices to retain and nurture client relationships.&#xa0;The first is its focus on the customer experience. Like Warby and Dollar Shave Club, Winc offers money-back guarantees, easy returns and top notch customer service.</p><p>But what really sets the company apart in this area is its understanding of the massive shift in consumer&#xa0;preferences.</p><p>A highly publicized study by Eventbrite showed us that 78% of millennials would chose to spend money&#xa0;on "experiences" rather than "things", and wine is no exception. In an article in The Wall Street Journal,&#xa0;author Lettie Teague shares an insight from a sommelier that "millennials are interested more in the&#xa0;narrative of the wine rather than the wine [itself]."</p><p>Winc understand this - it doesn't sell wine as much as it stages an oenophilic experience, complete with&#xa0;a personalized palate recommendation for each member and a short video for every wine that features&#xa0;tasting notes and other background information (e.g. the producer's story, an explanation of the&#xa0;growing region and / or a primer on the varietal).</p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>This fun and non-pedantic approach to wine education has successfully grown the market, as over 90%&#xa0;of Winc's customers have never purchased online before.</p><p>The second is adherence to a simple and disciplined formula for growth. Winc CEO Xander Oxman&#xa0;believes that the secret to virality "comes from having a strong NPS [Net Promoter Score] and referral&#xa0;engine".</p><p>Called "the one number you need to grow" by The Harvard Business Review, Net Promoter Score is a&#xa0;highly effective management tool used by companies such as P&amp;G, Anheuser-Busch, American Express,&#xa0;Delta Airlines, Best Buy, GE and Apple to gain a competitive advantage. Regarding its efficacy, Bain&#xa0;reports that "NPS leaders tend to grow at more than twice the rate of their competitors".</p><p>Winc's dedication to this framework has garnered scores comparable to some of the most iconic retail&#xa0;brands, and combined with an intuitive yet massively effective referral system, driven the company into&#xa0;the into the top 1% of wine producers in only a few years.</p><p>But as impressive as that might sound, becoming a top producer is not the company's ultimate goal, as&#xa0;management believes that competing for market share is pointless when there's an enormous&#xa0;opportunity to grow the market. The next Dollar Shave Club will need to meet 3 criteria

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><p class="source">Shutterstock</p></div></div><keyword id="6358589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="exercise">EXERCISE</keyword> is the closest thing medicine has to a panacea. Though hitting the treadmill is more effort than swallowing a pill, the benefits are worth it. Even modest amounts of exercise protect against diseases ranging from diabetes and osteoporosis to heart attacks and senility.</span></p>
<p>Exercise works its magic in many ways. It improves the power and efficiency of the heart; it boosts the release of certain neurotransmitters (the chemicals nerve cells use to talk to each other); and it stimulates cells' garbage-disposal machinery. Now a group of researchers led by Charlotte Ling of Lund University, in Sweden, has discovered another effect of exercise. It alters the way genes work in the tissue that stores fat.</p>
<p>In a paper published in the Public Library of <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword>, Dr Ling and her colleagues report the effects of six months of moderate exercise on 23 male couch-potatoes who were in their 30s and 40s. The men were supposed to attend three workouts a week. In the event, they managed an average of 1.8. Nevertheless, besides finding the usual effects--reduced heart rate, lowered blood pressure and a drop in cholesterol levels--the researchers also observed changes in the men's adipose tissue, the place where fat is stored. Specifically, the way fat cells in this tissue expressed their genes had altered.</p>
<p>This is epigenetics, a rapidly developing branch of biology that focuses not on the genes themselves but rather on how particular genes behave in specific cells. Which genes are active in a cell can be changed by making chemical alterations (known as epigenetic markers) to their DNA. Such alterations let the body fine-tune its response to the environment, and modern gene-sequencing techniques can detect them without too much difficulty.</p>
<p>Dr Ling, who is interested in adult-onset diabetes (often associated with too much body fat), knew that exercise stimulates epigenetic changes in muscle cells. These alter how muscle processes sugar. When she and her colleagues looked for similar alterations in their charges' adipose tissue, they found lots--18,000 markers distributed across 7,663 genes. This matters, because adipose tissue is not just a passive store of energy, it is also an organ in its own right, producing a range of biologically active chemicals that have all manner of effects on the rest of the body.</p>
<h3>Genetic epicentre</h3>
<p>What all these epigenetic markers are doing remains obscure. But among the altered genes were 18 known to be associated with <keyword id="6364492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Obesity">obesity</keyword> and another 21 linked with adult-onset diabetes. When Dr Ling's colleagues picked two such altered genes and silenced them completely in laboratory-grown fat cells, the cells changed, becoming more efficient at processing and depositing fat. That leads, Dr Ling notes, to the hypothesis that one reason exercise is good for you is because it improves the ability of fatty tissue to do its job. Lipids thus get stored in the right place instead of settling elsewhere in the body, where they do harm. As she observes, if you do have surplus fat it is better to have it stored in fatty tissue than in the liver or the pancreas.</p>
<p>This study is only a beginning. Working out which epigenetic changes wrought by exercise are important, and which incidental, will take time. But, given worries about how overweight people are becoming, and the incessant message from many governments that their citizens should take more exercise, studies like Dr Ling's should help by shining light on the way exercise actually works its magic.</p>

Exercise Doesn't Just Help Shed Fat - It Changes How Fatty Tissue Works

This is one of the most commonly asked questions I've received. Also in the top ten are: "What's the best wine club?" and "Are wine clubs really a good deal?"</p><p>Personally, I don't currently subscribe to wine clubs, though I have in the past. Many of those <em>seemed </em>like great deals.</p><p>I often found that a great price is different from a great deal. Also, as I got more knowledgeable about wine, I found that I could navigate online and retail wine stores and do well without the help of a wine club. <br /> <br /> But my experiences were from a few years ago, so I revisited the wine club market and investigated eight clubs. Many resembled my experience in the past, but two stood out. More on that in a second.</p><h2>Why join a wine club?</h2><p>I see three primary reasons:</p><ul><li>To replenish your supply of a particular winery's bottlings that you love</li><li>To have a regular supply of wine come to you with virtually no hassle</li><li>To have a knowledgeable buyer (often with more pricing power than you have) send you interesting wines you would or couldn't buy yourself</li></ul><p>Want to use a club for education or to get bargains? Don't bother. There are other ways to do that (and I hope my columns can be one of those methods.)</p><p><strong>Things to avoid </strong></p><p>- Clubs that require long-term commitments</p><p>- Clubs that hide shipping costs</p><p>- Clubs partnered with a brand that isn't tied to wine. That newspaper, magazine, or hotel chain is adding cost without adding value. Also, the brand is almost certainly not involved, except for the licensing agreement.  </p><p><strong>My favorite club for each use case: </strong></p><p><strong>Specific wineries. </strong></p><p>Wine clubs from a particular winery will depend on your palate - I'll  leave that choice to you. But beware signing up after you've toured multiple wineries and tasted LOTS of wine in one day. Your good mood may not transfer to the bottles they send you in 3 months. The club will be there tomorrow, if you're still excited then. Also, if you love a commonly available wine, you may want to forgo the club and buy it at lower prices closer to home.<strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Low-cost, "everyday," no-hassle wines  (under $15 a bottle.) <a href="https://www.tastingroom.com">Tasting Room from Lot 18. </a> </strong></p><p>Notice I didn't say cheap. I liked the Tasting Room approach to customizing the club's selections to your palate. New members receive a tasting kit of 6 small bottles of wine, which you then taste and rate using the accompanying website. After tasting through the six small bottles, the service provides you with a taste profile and then follows up with wine (either all red or red and white) matched to your profile. I had my wife do the tasting kit (she enjoys wine but isn't nearly as obsessed as I am) and the results suggested some wines she wouldn't have typically gravitated to on her own. <br /> <br />The wine was uniformly good, but none of wine was amazing or something you would want to collect. But that isn't why you join a club like this! You join to have wine you like on hand when you want it with very little hassle or risk. If that sounds good, this is a very good option. The site does a nice job of allowing you to provide feedback and further tailor offerings after the initial tests. It also helps you find something you like you can order at restaurants or wine stores, which is a nice feature. Wine Club by <a href="https://www.winestyr.com/wine-club">Winestyr</a>.</strong></p><p>Winestyr is a new wine club from four-year-old online wine seller Winestyr. Inspired by the wine offered by individual wineries, the club focuses on smaller, independent, American (mostly California) wines that don't make it to the shelves of most wine stores. Unlike the clubs from specific winery however, Winestyr's club presents a variety of well-made, interesting wines from lesser-known winemakers. Think about this as a "greatest hits" of multiple-producer clubs. </p><p>The club leans toward bold, well balanced, classically American style wines. The wines in my shipment were all really well made and well worth the $25-33 per bottle price of the 3-bottle packages (price is lower if you select red and white over all-red wines.) If you are looking for a variety of well-made wines this is the best club option I could find.  </p><p>What I liked: Well made American wine that is difficult to buy through other channels. Great documentation on each wine. Ability to purchase more of anything you like. This is a great gateway to vineyards that could easily fly under your radar.</p><p>What about the other six clubs? I couldn't recommend any of them. There are certainly more than eight wine clubs on the market, and some of them are very certainly good. But I had to end my review somewhere! The vast majority (and the other six I tested) delivered wine that was either uniformly or predominantly bad. Low-cost airline kind of bad.</p><p>But there are good clubs out there. If there is a vineyard you particularly enjoy, join their club for regular replenishment of your wine reserves. Otherwise, clubs can be a great low-maintenance way to resupply your everyday wine closet, or they can send you new discoveries on a periodic basis with a high degree of success. I found two I liked.
