Daman and Diu is a union territory of the country located in the Western India. Spanning over an area of just 112 km2, this is the smallest federal division in the democracy. The union territory has only one constituency for the Lok Sabha. The Election Commission of India has announced that the elections will happen in Daman and Diu in one go on April 23 during the 3rd round of polling across the country. Along with the other constituencies of the country, the counting will happen on May 23 with the results declared on the same day. Spanning over an area of 112 square kilometers, Daman and Diu is a union territory of the country located in the western India. Comprising of two distinct regions with the Gulf of Khambhat in between them, Daman and Diu joined the Indian union in 1961 after centuries of Portuguese colonization. The total number of eligible voters in the union territory is 1,11,827 made of 57,011 males and 54,816 females. Congress and BJP are the major players in the political scene of Daman and Diu. In 2009 and 2014 Parliamentary elections, the BJP won from here representing Lalubhai Patel as the MP from the union territory for two times. Earlier in 1999 and 2004 elections, the INC candidate Dhayabhai Patel won from here and held the seat for two consecutive terms. The voting percentage in 2014 general Lok Sabha elections in the union territory was 78.01. Daman and Diu union territory has one single Lok Sabha constituency which is unreserved. There are no assembly constituencies here as the governance is directly controlled by the union government of India at the center. The electors of the union territory voted in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 23 during the third phase of elections in the country.

Lalubhai Patel becomes the 185th candidate announced by the BJP to represent the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He will contest from Daman and Diu once again in the face of BJP. This time, Ketan Patel will field on behalf of the Congress party. Earlier Lalubhai Patel had won from Daman and Diu two times during 2009 and 2014 elections for the parliament, both the times contesting for BJP from here. Lalubhai Babubhai Patel of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the elections defeating Ketan Dahyabhai Patel(Cong) by around 10,000 votes. He got close to 43% votes while the Congress candidate got 31.62% votes. Daman and Diu came into existence as a separate union territory following the Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganization Act of 1987. Till then it remained as part of Goa after 1961 when it was liberated from the Portuguese rule. During the first bye elections from here in 1987, the Congress Party won from here. With its single Lok Sabha constituency, the union territory of Daman and Diu elected BJP’s Lalubhai Babubhai Patel from this seat who had a margin of 9,222 votes than Ketan Dahyabhai Patel of the Congress party. Both of them had pushed AAP’s Kessur Goan behind whose result showed up only 729 votes. In 2009, Lalubhai had fought as a BJP candidate and won by a good margin of 24,838 votes. Vallabhai Patel of the Congress party had then secured 28.97 votes from Daman and Diu constituency. In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, the top candidates contesting are BJP’s Lalubhai Patel, Congress party’s Ketan Dahyabhai Patel, and BSP’s Sakil Latif Khan. The independent candidate who is quite popular in the region and now trying to wage a tough battle with these candidates is Patel Umeshbhai Babubhai. The political experts say the entry of Umesh Patel and Sakil Khan has now made the game tougher for the ruling party.

As the second phase of the <keyword id="43573" type="EVENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Election">general election</keyword> takes off in India, voters in 11 states and 1 union territory— West Bengal, Odisha, <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Manipur and Puducherry — were up early queuing up at the election booths. Nearly 5 million people are eligible to vote in the state of West Bengal with a nearly equal distribution between men and women, albeit there are only 87 registered third-gender voters in the three constituencies going to vote in the state today today. And Puducherry, while being a union territory, is home to nearly one million voters who have been facing <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/india/puducherry-congress-tries-to-win-back-sole-mp-seat/articleshow/68899027.cms">increasing</a> debt and a fall in social initiatives due to lower devolution of taxes from the central government. A lot of voters and politicians are wondering if the second phase of polling will be marred with problems of EVM malfunctions and poll booth violence like evidenced during the first phase of the general election in India. Two incidents of poll booth violence have already been reported in West Bengal. In Uttar Pradesh, four of the contesting politicians — Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Bahujan Samaj Party’s Mayawati — have been <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/top-story/up-election-2019-after-yogi-mayawati-ec-bans-azam-maneka-from-campaigning/story/337566.html">banned</a> from campaigning by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for issuing controversial comments. For Tamil Nadu, the days leading up to the election were a little chaotic after the Income Tax (IT) department seized over 1,350 kilograms of gold and nearly ₹14.8 million which was allegedly stashed to bribe voters. Elections in Vellore, one of Tamil Nadu’s most-watched constituencies, were cancelled altogether after ₹1.05 million was found at Durai Murugan’s house, the father of Kathir Anand — a DMK candidate in the district. Another ₹115.3 was also found at Poonjolai Srinivasan’s cement godown, a known associate of Murugan. Even Maharashtra hasn’t had an easy go of it with over 15,000 cases of alleged Model Code of Conduct violations <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/lok-sabha-elections/lok-sabha-elections-2019-over-15-000-code-of-conduct-cases-filed-in-maharashtra/story-luAZtetS7fq6EUDRsYztmI.html">registered</a> since March 10.The Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Dilip Shinde, has stated that over 700,000 officers and employees of the states are involved in keeping elections in Maharashtra peaceful and efficient for the 10 seats of the state going to the polls today. <div type="ExtQuote" text="The enforcing departments (Income Tax and Police) also lodged total 15,095 FIRs against the offenders for violating the model code of conduct, with most of the cases pertaining to storage and distribution of illicit liquor, followed by possession of firearms." auname="Additional Chief Electoral Officer Dilip Shinde"></div>

 If voters aren’t being bribed, then they’re being threatened. Kawasi Lakhma, a Congress minister from Chhattisgarh, has been <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/general-elections-2019-chhattisgarh-congress-mla-kawasi-lakhma-threatens-voters-with-electric-shocks-2024279">telling</a> voters that they vote against his party, the EVM machine will deliver an electric shock. While Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu struggle with voter bribery issues, Bihar and Karnataka are more concerned with voter turnout. The city of Bengaluru — the Silicon Valley of India — in particular, has issues of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/election-2019-gold-confiscated-in-tamil-nadu-ahead-of-second-phase/articleshow/68933494.cms">voter turnout</a> while Bihar’s <a href="https://www.livemint.com/elections/lok-sabha-elections/bihar-elections-2019-patna-is-missing-a-whole-generation-of-millennials-1555350536677.html">brain drain</a> means that a lot of its eligible millennial voters don’t actually live in the state anymore. As Manipur goes to polls again, the Returning Officer (RO)The Returning Officer (RO) of the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, Haobam Rosita, has <a href="https://www.newsclick.in/returning-officer-recommends-re-poll-19-polling-stations-manipur">recommended</a> that re-polling needs to take place at 19 of the polling stations from the first phase of the general elections in the state. Among the many reasons that Rosita cites for repolling, the most disturbing is probably one of the constituencies showed that voter turnout in excess of 100% and that the polling booth for the Najang Village was put up at a non-designated location. In order to keep disruptive elements from affecting the polls similarly, the west Indian states of West Bengal and Assam are <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/patna/2nd-phase-tight-security-in-five-election-bound-districts/articleshow/68868180.cms">increasing</a> security in constituencies along the border — especially in districts classified as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘critical’. And unfortunately, for Jammu and Kashmir, none of the contesting political parties are talking about the environmental issues which have a heavy bearing on the state’s water supply as well as its tourism industry, which has been suffering as more and more of the state’s green capital is being destroyed. New Delhi, Feb 11 () India has received foreign direct investment (FDI) of USD 463.44 million in the food processing sector in the first half of the current fiscal, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.The country had received USD 628.24 million FDI in the food processing sector during the full fiscal year 2018-19 and USD 904.90 million during 2017-18, it added.The government has permitted 100 per cent FDI through automatic route in manufacturing of food products subject to sectoral rules and regulations. Also, 100 per cent FDI is allowed through government route in retail trade in respect of food products produced/manufactured in India.Placing the data before the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Rameswar Teli said the country has received USD 463.44 million FDI in the food processing sector during April-September period of 2019-20."...in April-June 2019 quarter, the FDI equity inflow was USD 329.04 million which is higher than the quarter ending September 2019 at USD 134.40 million," he added.During the first quarter of the fiscal, maximum FDI of USD 244.95 million was made in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, followed by USD 25.08 million in Maharasthra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, while USD 22.99 million in Delhi and part of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the data showed.As per the latest Annual Survey of Industries, the minister said the invested capital in the registered food processing sector was Rs 3,86,350 crore in 2015-16, Rs 4,17,695 crore in 2016-17 and Rs 4,48,938 crore in 2017-18.In a separate reply, he also said the government has revised the operational guidelines of Scheme for Creation/Expansion of Food Processing &amp; Preservation Capacities (CEFPPC) under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) and notified on January 8 this year.The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) does not set up any food processing industries/projects/units on its own. The results will be counted on May 23. In a first for the country, voting for the four state legislatures, as well as bypolls, will be held alongside with the election for the Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for simultaneous elections for both state and central legislatures, but the proposal has faced severe political opposition. Nearly 900 million voters are expected to turn out this year, compared to 814.5 million in 2014. The number of polling stations will be increased from 900,000 in 2014 to 1 million this year. 16 million new voters will be between the age of 18 and 19, compared to 23.1 million in 2014. 1.7 million voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines will be in use after a <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/story/the-many-claims-of-evm-tampering-in-india-1435638-2019-01-21" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">series</a> of allegations of foul play in many state polls in the run up to the general elections in 2019. VVPAT is a second line of independent verification via a printer machine, which is attached to electronic voting machines. When a voter presses the button against the party symbol of their choice on the electronic voting machine (EVM), a paper slip is printed through VVPAT. The slip would contain the poll symbol and name of the candidate and allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate. After the voter views the slip, that slip will be dropped inside a sealed box linked to the EVM. "The Model Code of Conduct comes into effect from today itself in the entire country.
