But you're relaxed — a little too relaxed. Suddenly, you notice your peripheral vision beginning to fade. In what may be just seconds, you completely lose consciousness. That's <keyword id="21494350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="G-LOC" source="keywords">G-LOC</keyword>, or G-induced loss of consciousness, and the results can be catastrophic. In flight, levels of acceleration known as G-force vary, and when pilots experience its highest levels, the pressure of gravity pushes blood to the lower half of the human body, causing low blood circulation in the upper half of the body. "When that happens for an extended enough period of time, you will lose consciousness," Lt. Col. <keyword id="21494356" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="carolyn-price-moore" source="keywords">Carolyn Price Moore</keyword>, an aerospace physiologist and the chief of the 19th <keyword id="19949543" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Force" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Air Force" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Air Force">Air Force</keyword>'s Aircrew Performance Branch, told Business Insider. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-aircraft-fleets-war-like-we-havent-seen-general-2024-2">Air Force</a> pilots must prepare their bodies for the reaction at the highest levels of acceleration during their flights. Experts broke down how pilots make it through these high-pressure endeavors. <div type="image" title="A T-38 Talon aircraft flying from Columbus Air Force Base, Ohio." height="768" width="1024" msid="109198061" hostid="261"></div>"All the training that we do, the goal is to ensure that the pilot is capable of doing the maneuver," <keyword id="21494357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="price-moore" source="keywords">Price Moore</keyword> said. The Anti-G Straining Maneuver, also known as <keyword id="21494355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AGSM" source="keywords">AGSM</keyword>, is an exercise pilots use during high levels of G-force to prevent G-LOC. Air Force pilots are taught about G-forces, AGSM, and all the ways that increased altitude and pressure can affect the body as early as their first week of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/f35-b-fighter-pilot-training-marine-corps-air-station-2021-4">training</a> in the classroom. <h2>Learning the ropes</h2>When pilots are just starting out, their introduction to G-force is gradual. This gives them time to build the physical fitness to withstand pulling Gs. "You really just want your lower body to be very strong, so if you can do working out that improves your lower body strength that's gonna go a long way towards helping with G tolerance," Price Moore said. Athletes tend to have an advantage when it comes to preparing for high-G-force flights as they may already have significant lower body strength. Although height is beyond the pilot's control, it also helps to have a short stature as blood can circulate in the body faster. Students are put through an introductory primary acceleration training where they are individually spun in a human centrifuge that gradually increases in Gs. "It's a nice slight, just kind of slow climb up into the G realm that lets them kind of get used to the feel of the centrifuge," said Senior Master Sgt. Tyler Long, who has overseen training performance facilities. He called the training a "roller coaster on steroids," saying "it's a feeling you've never felt before in your life." Students wear G-suits that act as an external "air bladder," squeezing the lower body to promote blood flow if a student doesn't have enough lower body strength to flex on their own. <div type="image" title="centrifuge spins" height="2256" width="3000" msid="109198063" hostid="261"></div>Training also includes what Long describes as the SACM (Simulated Aerial Combat Maneuvers) profile, a simulation in which the student has to track an aircraft onscreen while they undergo and ride out varying levels of G-force. "The whole point is proficiency. Get them proficient with this G strength, get them comfortable to a point where they can now go and fly a higher G capable aircraft," he said. New Air Force <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pilot-navy-topgun-what-its-like-daily-life-2023-9" target="_blank">student</a> pilots start out flying a T-6 Texan II aircraft, within about seven months in Undergraduate Pilot Training and move forward to either mobility or heavy aircraft training using the Air Mobility Fundamentals-Simulator or fighter and bomber training in a T-38 Talon aircraft. Students are assigned an aircraft by the end of UPT. The student will use this simulator for several months. An undergraduate pilot will then move to fly a T-6 Texan II aircraft within about seven months in Undergraduate Pilot Training and move forward to either mobility or heavy aircraft training using the AMF-Simulator or fighter and bomber training in a T-38 Talon aircraft. Students are assigned an aircraft by the end of UPT. Once the student masters this training they will fly the aircraft they were assigned and master it during the Formal Training Unit. <h2>Handling the real thing</h2>The two main mechanisms of AGSM that prevent a pilot from passing out are calculated breathing and the squeezing of the lower body. It's a simple but life-saving maneuver. Before the pilot even enters G-force onset while flying, they have to flex their lower body like their glutes, hamstrings and other muscles as tight as they can. "They just tighten and hold and what that does is it actually compresses all of the blood vessels, all your veins and arteries in the lower half of your body to help prevent that pooling," Price Moore said, explaining that the flexing allows the blood to stay and continue circulating the upper body. <div type="image" title="Air Force T-1 Jayhawk, T-6 Texan II, and T-38 Talon" height="1331" width="2000" msid="109198066" hostid="261"></div>The more challenging step is executing the proper breathing technique. This allows blood flow to return to the heart and then to the brain. A pilot should take a big deep breath, holding the air in their glottis, which is located in the throat, before the G-onset or acceleration occurs and then they begin the "air exchange." The air exchange is the quick release of air that should occur every three seconds. "It's not a normal breath, it's a forced air exchange where you are essentially forcing the glottis open and closed really, really rapidly," Price Moore described. The sound of an air exchange sounds hoarse, like a mix between a gasp and a cough. In training, this is all done under the supervision of the instructor who is accompanying the student in the aircraft. They must listen for the air exchanges to ensure and approve whether the pilot is breathing correctly. <h2>Accidents still happen</h2>Sometimes G-induced loss of consciousness cannot be avoided and a pilot might also experience symptoms such as brief amnesia, nausea, disorientation, and confusion, as well as neck and back injuries. Flight accidents have also occurred as a result of pilots passing out. For instance, among other incidents, both the Navy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.military.com/defensetech/2008/01/14/blue-angel-crash-blamed-on-gloc">Blue Angels</a> and Air Force <a target="_blank" href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2018/10/16/report-thunderbirds-pilot-killed-in-crash-lost-consciousness-in-high-g-maneuver/">Thunderbirds</a> have lost demonstration pilots to G-LOC.But many military aircraft are now equipped with an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System that help to prevent accidents from happening. "When the auto GCAS is engaged, the aircraft itself gets texts if it is essentially too close to the ground, and if so, the aircraft itself will take over and do what's called a 'fly up,' and we'll fly the aircraft back up to a safe altitude," Price Moore explained. "Since the installation of auto GCAS we have had far fewer incidents of G-induced loss of consciousness mishaps or accidents," she said, adding that "operationally, the auto GCAS has kind of been a game-changer in terms of G-LOC mishaps, so there's that guardrail." But even with a kind of safety net in the aircraft, that doesn't make it any less necessary for US military pilots to train as if they don't and ready their bodies for the intense high-pressure challenges of <keyword id="21494349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="high-G-flying" source="keywords">high-G flying</keyword>. Darryl George, a 17-year-old junior at Barbers Hill High School in a suburb of Houston, was first suspended for his traditional locs hairstyle on August 31 — the same week that the state's Crown Act went into effect, a new law prohibiting race-based hair discrimination in schools and workplaces.The <a href="https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1658765652/bhisd/oinchkulgqrkychthutu/BHISDDressandGroomingCode_1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">district's dress code policy</a> bars male students from having hair that extends past their eyebrows or earlobes, even if it is pulled back.George has been stuck in in-school suspension (ISS) ever since for refusing to cut off his locs. After completing a two-week suspension last week, George returned to school on Monday with his twisted locs tied on top of his head, but not cut off. He was given another round of suspension, a civil rights activist helping his family, Dr. Candice Matthews, told Insider.George's mother Darresha told Insider that while her son is in ISS, he doesn't even have a proper chair to sit on. "Daryl is sitting on a stool, a stool in a cubby," Darresha George told Insider. "That's what conditions he's in. He's got to sit on the stool for eight hours, back hurting, and can't move.""If I were to make my children sit on a stool for eight hours, I would have an issue with CPS," Allie Booker, an attorney representing the George family, said, referring to Child Protective Services. "And so that's also the next step is that we're going to contact Child Protective Services because the conditions that he is in inside of that room are not proper. He doesn't even have a desk."Darryl's mother said that the school does not offer students in ISS a cafeteria lunch, only a sandwich and a bottle of water. "They put him in ISS, taking him out of his education, stopping his education," Darresha George added. "His grades are falling because he's not getting proper instructions to do his work."The district's communications director, David Bloom, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/14/us/texas-student-locs-hair-crown-act.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The New York Times</a> that students in ISS are gathered in a room with a teacher, where they sit at desks separated by partitions. Bloom did not immediately respond to Insider's request for clarification on the conditions in ISS. Booker said that in addition to filing a report with CPS, she plans to file a lawsuit against the school this week for racial discrimination and violation of the Crown Act. Bloom told Insider that the district's policy on hair length does not violate the Crown Act. He pointed to a <a href="https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/community/rooted/what-is-the-crown-act-texas-bill-law-what-does-it-cover/287-785f8951-a1f9-4b1f-921f-08a0ef95a2b9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement from Rep. Rhetta Bowers</a>, who championed the Crown Act, saying the law is not about hair length or hair color. But the George family and their supporters are not backing down. His hair is a connection to God," Matthews said, adding that Darryl's dad's hair, stepdad's hair, and brother's hair is woven into his own. His remarks came after President Ram Nath Kovind, who is here on his maiden state visit at the invitation of his counterpart M Abdul Hamid to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971, held delegation-level talks with the country's top leadership on Wednesday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called on President Kovind and the two leaders discussed several issues of mutual interest and bilateral cooperation. They reviewed the progress in the multifaceted and comprehensive bilateral ties. Addressing a press briefing here on Wednesday night, Shringla said, "As far as we are concerned, India and Bangladesh are bound by ties of history, language, spirituality and culture." He said that the defence issue was discussed during President Kovind's talks with Bangladesh's top leadership. “I think the issue of imports of defence related items by Bangladesh, you are aware that we have signed, we have extended the line of credit for defence items for USD 500 million. Under this line of credit, several items have been identified and being fast tracked. They're in fairly advanced stages of being processed… we will see certain defence items exports from India coming to Bangladesh and this is something that we would like to see,” the foreign secretary said. Sringla said that “essentially the entire gamut of cooperation, whether it is training, exchanges, joint manufacturing in the defence sector, this is something that we would like to see enhanced”. In 2019, India provided USD 500 million Line of Credit to Bangladesh for defence-related procurement in the neighbouring country. Export Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) entered into an agreement on April 11 with Bangladesh's Armed Forces Division for making available to the latter a Government of India-supported LoC of USD 500 million. The LoC is for the purpose of financing defence-related procurement in Bangladesh. In April 2017 during Prime Minister Hasina's visit to New Delhi, India committed USD 500 million LoC for Bangladesh's defence. President Kovind on Wednesday assured the top leadership here that Bangladesh has a "special place" in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and underlined that the bilateral relationship based on sovereignty, equality, trust and understanding is mature enough to handle the "most complex of problems". Bangladesh to import defence items from India under $500-million LoC

Pakistan resorts to heavy shelling at India along the LoC in Poonch

There has been a spurt in ceasefire violations along the LoC in the Kupwara district of Kashmir valley and to the south of Pir Panchal in Rajouri and Poonch districts in Jammu with Pakistan targeting civilian areas and defence positions with long range mortars and small arms. The Army says it is giving a befitting response to all acts of aggression by Pakistan along the LoC. Citing sources in the <keyword id="137756" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Commerce">Ministry of Commerce</keyword>, The Express Tribune reported that Adviser to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood may take a decision on whether to import cotton and yarn from India next week. They said that the issue of cotton shortfall has already been brought to the notice of Prime Minister <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword>, who also holds the portfolio of the commerce minister. Once a principled decision is taken, a formal order will be presented before the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet, the sources told the daily. The sources said that in-house deliberations have already begun but the final decision would be taken only after seeking the approval of the prime minister. I cannot say yes or no at this stage and would be in a better position to respond on Monday, Dawood told the daily, responding to a question on whether Pakistan was considering allowing cotton import from India. The trade ties between both the countries can help minimise cost of production in Pakistan and ensure sustained food supplies, the daily said. India and Pakistan issued a joint statement on Thursday to strictly observe all agreements on ceasefire along the LoC and other sectors after the hotline discussions by their Director Generals of Military Operations. The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 2003, but it has hardly been followed in letter and spirit over the past several years. Relations between the two neighbours have nose-dived after a series of terror attacks in India perpetrated by terror groups based in Pakistan. Bilateral ties deteriorated further after India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. The move angered Pakistan, which downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad. Pakistan also snapped all air and land links with India and suspended trade and railway services. The paper reported that against the annual estimated consumption of minimum 12 million bales, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research expects only 7.7 million bales production this year. However, cotton ginners have given the lowest production estimates of only 5.5 million bales for this year. There is a minimum shortfall of six million bales and Pakistan has so far imported roughly 688,305 metric tonnes of cotton and yarn, costing USD 1.1 billion, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. There is still a gap of about 3.5 million bales that needs to be filled through imports. Due to shortage of cotton and yarn, the users were compelled to import them from the United States, Brazil and Uzbekistan. Imports from India would be far cheaper and would reach Pakistan within three to four days. Importing yarn from other countries was not only expensive but would also take one to two months to reach Pakistan, the daily reported, quoting businessmen who deal in these commodities. The delay in yarn import can pose risk to timely deliver the export orders, according to the paper. However, the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) is exerting pressure on the Pakistan government not to allow cotton and yarn import from India. An industry insider told the daily that few millers have already hoarded the cotton and were now charging higher rates and import would dampen their short-term earnings. In an appeal to Dawood, Aptma said that the import of yarn from India will directly impact cotton prices in Pakistan. The cotton sowing season is currently starting in Pakistan and the predicted drop in cotton price owing to import of yarn from India is approximately 10-15 per cent, discouraging farmers not to sow cotton, according to the Aptma. On Thursday, India said it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan and is committed to resolving all issues bilaterally in a peaceful manner. Prime Minister Khan on Saturday welcomed the ceasefire agreement with India and said Islamabad remains ready to move forward to resolve "all outstanding issues" through dialogue. Pakistan likely to import cotton from India after announcing LoC ceasefire

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Stylists from the legendary Khamit Kinks natural <keyword id="11988739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hair" source="Orion">hair</keyword> <keyword id="6358603" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="salon" source="Orion">salon</keyword> opened the Kinky Kollective in 2019. </li><li>The pandemic almost ruined their business, as novices on YouTube recycled their trademark styles.</li></ul>Khamit Kinks, known for its celebrity clientele that included Solange Knowles, Oprah, Lennie Kravitz, and Stevie Wonder, was, for years, the New York City salon for styling and caring for natural hair. Anu Prestonia, the salon's owner, had started working with hair as a student at Howard University and later styled covers for Essence Magazine. In 1997, she opened Khamit Kinks in TriBeCa, where it occupied the same block as Jay-Z (before he married Beyonce), Maxwell, and Robert DeNiro. ''Sometimes people – <keyword id="11940579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="black" source="Orion">Black</keyword> and white – squint as they go by as if they were wondering what we were doing in a mostly white area,'' Anu <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1997/07/06/nyregion/moving-on-up-the-hair-braider-to-the-stars.html">said</a> at the time. ''But I say, why not?'' When the rent spiked in Manhattan a few years after that, she moved Khamit Kinks across the Brooklyn Bridge to Boerum Hill. From 2011 to 2019, the salon at 400 Atlantic Avenue was known to be a space for well-heeled <keyword id="12297901" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-women" source="Orion">Black women</keyword> and men to receive expert hair care and hang out. Stylists were trained in trichology – issues related to the hair and scalp – and clients came to them as they transitioned from chemically treated styles and tight braids, known to cause <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5896661/">traction alopecia</a>, to natural styles that aren't so damaging to hair follicles. The styles they invented took on lives of their own: Goddess Braids, the Senegalese Twist, the Casamas, the Chaka Khan, and Extension Locs. Natural hair was having a renaissance, and Brooklyn felt like the center of that. For so long, natural, tightly-coiled African hair had been considered an act of protest against Eurocentric beauty standards. A rejection of anti-Black dictates of what Black women must do to fit into a corporate culture that despises natural hair. Gradually, Black style icons like Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong'o, and Issa Rae helped to shift these expectations, and more stylists learned how to work with natural hair to create sleek looks that didn't wreak havoc on the scalp. (In 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives approved <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/888">the Crown Act</a> to ban hair discrimination, but it has not passed the Senate. New York passed a <a href="http://www.nysed.gov/news/2021/honor-international-day-girl-state-education-department-issues-guidance-schools-regarding">version</a> of the law in 2019.) I discovered Khamit Kinks in 2010. After years of using chemical straighteners and adding heavy extensions that weakened my hair at the roots, I was experiencing a lot of hair loss. I was desperate for a natural hair expert. For the next eight years, I remained a loyal client as stylists coaxed my hair back to health. It wasn't cheap – a single visit would set me back a few hundred dollars, and the 20% tip was non-negotiable – but there was no other place like it. <div type="image" title="xxx" height="3333" width="5000" msid="89161945" hostid="261"></div>But then, Anu announced, in a rush, that she was shutting down and retiring. While many of us saw a successful business, the reality was more complicated, as Anu explained in a recent email. "I would never open a brick and mortar business again, particularly not in New York, and only if I owned the building," she wrote. "Had I owned the properties I rented, I would still be in business now." (Anu has since started a <a href="https://anuessentials.com/">new business</a> producing perfume and natural beauty products.)In her farewell email, Anu passed the baton to Taeisha Black, a 20-year veteran of the salon who had worked as a stylist and then as Khamit Kinks' manager. For Taeisha – whom Angela Bassett once called to consult personally – it was a bittersweet moment. (Note to readers: We're using first names to avoid confusion.) <h2><div type="image" title="xxx" height="5000" width="3333" msid="89161946" hostid="261"></div></h2>Taeisha had long dreamed about opening her own salon in Brooklyn. Then in her mid-40s, she wondered if this was finally the moment to climb out from behind the shadow of Anu, a larger-than-life figure who had been called the "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1997/07/06/nyregion/moving-on-up-the-hair-braider-to-the-stars.html">the Hair Braider to the Stars</a>." Nurturing and styling natural hair, particularly the 4C, which is categorized as the tightest coil in the <a href="https://www.allure.com/gallery/curl-hair-type-guide">curly hair texture</a> chart, was Taeisha's passion. Her craft. Her <keyword id="6360041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="life" source="Orion">life</keyword>'s calling.As her excitement grew, the business plan seemed to write itself: There would be a storefront on Atlantic Ave, just like Khamit Kinks. She would paint the walls at the entrance a bright yellow and she would find a vintage velour couch in teal or turquoise for the reception area. From her years managing Khamit Kinks, Taeisha had mastered the art of running a smooth operation, including keeping wait times (a common complaint in many Black salons) to a minimum. The stylists she had worked alongside already had the skills, and there was a built-in clientele.One Monday that October, she sat down with her lawyer to discuss the details, and her dream seemed to disintegrate. There was no way she could take on the weight of a $13,000 to $15,000 a month rent on Atlantic Avenue, where high-end shops had been taking the place of Yemeni restaurants and pharmacies. Maybe she could rent a suite, week-to-week, in a Harlem high-rise, her lawyer suggested. Taeisha remembers weeping quietly in the chair across from him. "I thought I was too good to be in a suite," she said later. There was nothing wrong with Harlem, home to the Apollo Theater and the Cotton Club. Taeisha was a born and raised Harlemite. Brooklyn just better embodied the Afrocentric culture – the braiding, the hair twisting, the head wraps; a certain ideal of a gorgeous, polished, confident Black woman – that Taeisha loved and embraced. "Black hair is history. It's a community," Taeisha said.But a suite in Harlem was what was possible, now. A few weeks after meeting with the lawyer, Black invited five Khamit Kinks stylists to join the new venture, called the Kinky Kollective. Two stylists, Jahmillah Collier and Anta Fall Diakhate, said yes. Jahmillah, had started at Khamit Kinks with Taeisha when they were both 22, and she "had the creative edge," Taeisha said. "She was the trendsetter." One of her creations, the Baby Curl Twist, was adopted by the actress <a href="https://www.curlynikki.com/2010/01/tracie-thoms-natural-hair-celebrity.html">Tracie Thoms</a> as her signature look until recently, and went mainstream as the Passion Twist. <div type="image" title="xxx" height="5000" width="3333" msid="89161947" hostid="261"></div>Anta, who had come to New York from Senegal and was a few years younger, was a master braider. She had always balanced shifts at Khamit Kinks with her day job as an accountant at H&amp;R Block, but she had taken the salon's closure especially hard. Anta helped Taeisha find space in a 26-suite building in Harlem, two blocks from the Apollo Theater, where various stylists and aestheticians had also set up shop. The three women launched a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo and raised about $8,000. Working together, their vision was brought to life: A 90s R&amp;B playlist was assembled, the walls were done up with solid color panels of fuchsia, green, yellow, purple, and blue. As word spread, it turned out that many of the old Brooklyn clients didn't mind traveling to Harlem to get their hair done, and new clients appeared from New Jersey, the Bronx, and upper Manhattan. On December 7, 2019, the Kinky Kollective studio opened in Harlem. Three months later, COVID-19 came to New York. In the blink of an eye, the city shut down, including all non-essential businesses like salons. The vibrant Harlem streets were transformed into an eerie pandemic landscape. Client relationships formed over years now hung in limbo. Just months after taking a leap of faith, Taeisha, Jahmillah, and Anta were on their own, unsure if they'd even have a business to return to. It was devastating.<h2>YouTube Appropriation </h2>When Taeisha approached her about joining the Kinky Kollective, Anta hadn't needed much convincing. Over the years, Khamit Kinks had become her closest community, the place and people she looked forward to seeing the most after a stressful week studying business administration or preparing taxes from her desk at H&amp;R Block. Taeisha, Jahmillah, and the other stylists had helped her learn English. It was with them that she learned proper braiding techniques that didn't cause tension on the follicles and lead to hair loss. At Khamit Kinks' "First Friday" meetings, where they discussed customer reviews, she had learned professionalism, like being militant about honoring clients' appointment times and not chatting on her cell phone while braiding.So, when Anu announced the salon's closing with just a week's notice, Anta had felt angry and unmoored. "I felt like a family member was leaving me. I cried so much that day," Anta recalls. "People were like, 'What's going on with you? Have you lost your mom?' Once it sunk in that it was gonna be gone for good, it really was tough for me. It took a while to get used to it."But this new salon would be even better – a partnership among equals. What's more, Anta's clients had reassured her that "wherever I would go, they would come." Jahmillah's path had been different. As one of Khamit Kinks' most successful stylists, she had struck out on her own, visiting private clients at home, even before the salon shuttered. Often, she worked seven days a week.<div type="image" title="xxx" height="5000" width="3333" msid="89161950" hostid="261"></div>When <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> hit, Jahmillah focused on self-care. With the extra time at home, she was more consistent about doing the exercises and stretches that she hopes will ward off varicose veins and carpal tunnel syndrome – professional hazards of her work. Jahmillah's creativity was also flowing and she started putting together ideas for brand new styles. To pay her bills, she set up a curbside service for custom wigs. Jahmillah was also keeping up with online trends, which quickly gave way to concern that her clients – Black men and women – were getting terrible advice while in lockdown."YouTube amateurs, who were not licensed or educated in caring for natural hair as far as nourishment, and only do the technical work like adding extensions, were teaching people how to braid their own hair," Jahmillah said. "They encouraged the use of gel for a sleek look, but gel tends to wear the edges down" – the baby hairs around the hairline – "causing hair loss." Her fears were confirmed as clients – slightly desperate about the deteriorating state of their hair – started reaching out. "I think I'm just going to cut it off!" they were telling her. "I don't know what to do.""If they were desperate enough to chop it all off, it meant that they'd be back when we re-opened and I needed to be prepared for clients who were each going to be uniquely transformed by the pandemic," she said. But by the third month of the shutdown, the situation was getting increasingly dispiriting. Some of the styles that Jahmillah and other Khamit Kinks stylists had created eons ago – and perhaps derided as "too ethnic" at the time – were now being recycled with new names. The Trini Braid had reappeared as the Knotless Braid, and the Silky Dread was now the Faux Loc. Jahmillah felt a little hurt and wistful. A pioneer, she was being pushed aside, her ideas taken without credit. "Social media has become the gateway for appropriation," she said. "I've watched other creatives and innovators kind of get put on the sideline while a newbie uses social media to promote the style."<h2>'Just have to pray and see what happens'</h2>When we spoke last October, Taeisha swore that her lawyer's advice to rent a suite had been prescient. Had they signed an expensive long-term lease, how would they have stayed in business? But as week-to-week renters, the Kinky Kollective had avoided that crushing responsibility during the pandemic. But in those quiet months at home with her two daughters – one four and the other 26 – she had felt that same wave of self-doubt that had hit her back when they had discussed finances in his office. That June, after the murder of George Floyd, there had been anger in the streets, but also a sense that the world was changing. If ever there was a moment to open a salon for natural hair, one that celebrated and nourished Black beauty and created space for Black New Yorkers to be themselves, it had to be now. "Honestly, it was hard to hold that tension between where I wanted to be and where I am now," Taeisha said. "I'm holding it together because of God. I mean praying, and crying, and pleading, and begging."Taeisha, Jahmillah, and Anta checked in via text, sharing information they were getting about when they could open up, what loans and grants were available for independent contractors, and just regular conversations like, "Wow, this is crazy. What are we gonna do?"The chats would often end the same way: "Just have to pray and see what happens."<h2>Kinky Kollective Reopens</h2>In July 2020, the Kinky Kollective reopened its doors.Right away, an influx of clients descended. A few clients asked for private sessions (one brought her own humidifier) and were willing to pay a premium for that. That winter, after the vaccine rollout, when it felt safer to share space, more requests poured in. Because the space was small, the three women arranged to alternate work days to meet social distancing guidelines. Vaccine mandates were a touchy subject and they didn't necessarily agree. They expected their clients to also have wide-ranging views. Jahmillah had been right about clients' hair suffering under the stewardship of self-appointed online experts and their improper braiding techniques and bad product recommendations. "Some of them actually did big chops," Jahmillah said. Many welcomed the social distancing restrictions: "They appreciate this new privacy as we nurse their hair back to health," she told me. <div type="image" title="xxx" height="3333" width="5000" msid="89161951" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="xxx" height="5000" width="3333" msid="89161952" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="xxx" height="3333" width="5000" msid="89161953" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="xxx" height="3333" width="5000" msid="89161954" hostid="261"></div>Home hair care requests trickled in, too. Taeisha, thinking of her four-year-old daughter who was too young to be vaccinated, was less inclined to acquiesce. "In the client's mind, it's safer to have the stylist go to their home. But then the stylist has to travel and encounters several people along the way," she said. "I know a barber who died of Covid after seeing home clients before the vaccines were available."Though still a vibrant, joyous space, the suite sometimes felt empty.Still, despite the uncertainty, there are some exciting possibilities for what comes next. Jahmillah wants to open an online natural hair school focused on caring for kinky hair. Anta, who completed her <a href="https://www.sisterlocks.com/">Sisterlocks</a> (miniature dreadlocks) certification during the lockdown, now wants to become a Sisterlocks ambassador and see the Kinky Kollective expand. Taeisha joined a mastermind group to help stay focused on the dream, and she just launched a Kinky Kollective line of hair and beauty products, which is sold at the salon. They plan to do their own thing, and work as a unit. It was, after all, the three of them that did this, together. When the story of the Black hair revolution is told, Taeisha wants the Kinky Kollective to be part of that history. "The pandemic was evidence that you can be all the way at the top, and come crashing down," Taeisha said. Devender Anand, spokesman of Defence Ministry said that at 4.30 a.m., Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and shelling with mortars along the LoC in Mankote sector of <keyword id="44760" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poonch">Poonch</keyword> district. "Indian army retaliated befittingly," he added. Since the beginning of this year, Pakistan has been violating the bilateral ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan in 1999. A total of 24 civilians were killed and over 100 injured in more than 3,186 ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the LoC so far this year. Thousands of people living in villages close to the LoC are living life on the edge as shelling from across the border endangers their lives, livelihood and agricultural activities.  Similarly, the same motto is believed in by Jawans and officers monitoring the forward post and undertake foot patrolling along LoC amid electronic surveillance put to guard the Indo-Pak border in <keyword id="3736170" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="noushera">Noushera</keyword> sector of Rajouri district, which falls opposite to the <keyword id="3740164" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhimbher">Bhimbher</keyword> district of PoK, where the heavily armed special forces in pre-dawn surgical strike hit at terror launch pads last month. 
 
Post surgical strike defeat Nooushera sector is now a target of Pakistan Armed forces as it a region with thick coniferous woods, deep valleys, rock-cut mountains. The Noushera sector was once biggest infiltration area as there were huge launching pads and terrorist training camps in Bhimbher-Samahni-Nikyal belt across LoC. 
 
As per the reports, army soldiers are most vigilant along LoC and cannot even for a moment keep LoC out of the manual and electronic sight as Pakistan is insulted after the surgical strike.
