Growing industrialization, urbanization, and rising incomes have led to <keyword id="22654252" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indias-energy-consumption" source="keywords">India's energy consumption</keyword> rising rapidly. According to a recent report by the India Energy and Climate Centre (IECC), India's energy consumption is expected to increase three to four-fold in the coming decade. The report adds that India is projected to be the largest contributor to additional global energy demand between 2020-2040. In comparison to other industrialized economies, India lags by $1-2 trillion in its <keyword id="22654253" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-infrastructure-investment" source="keywords">energy infrastructure investment</keyword>, which is likely to take place in the next 2-3 decades. Per capita electricity consumption in India is much below the global average, but total <keyword id="19913208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electricity-demand" source="keywords">electricity demand</keyword> is growing at 8-9% per year, and is projected to double by 2030, if compared with demand in 2020. Because of global warming and increased pay-out capacity, electricity demand for cooling appliances is projected to increase six-fold by 2040. The IECC report anticipates that India's energy demand growth is accompanied by a deep reduction in <keyword id="20275471" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="clean-energy-technology" source="keywords">clean energy technology</keyword> costs, especially for wind turbines, <keyword id="22654254" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-PV-cells" source="keywords">solar PV cells</keyword>, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, and hydrogen electrolysers. India currently has over 130 GW of <keyword id="20959899" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-capacity" source="keywords">renewable capacity</keyword> installed. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP-26) in Glasgow in November 2021, Prime Minister Modi announced that India would deploy 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power generation capacity by 2030. In the past five years, India has added 55 GW of renewable capacity, 18 GW higher than <keyword id="20341420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-based-power-plants" source="keywords">coal-based power plants</keyword> (27 GW) during the same duration. In 2020, investment in renewables surpassed investment in fossil fuels for the fifth consecutive year, but there are concerns about the capacity value of <keyword id="21502409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Renewable-energy-generation" source="keywords">renewable energy generation</keyword>, or whether renewable energy can generate electricity during peak load periods. However, coal still accounts for over 70% of electricity generation in India. The country has some of the largest coal reserves in the world. But renewables are now cost-competitive as opposed to thermal power generation throughout India, even in regions previously considered resource-poor for renewable generation. The report says the cost of co-located solar and storage projects with approximately 2-4 hours of energy storage to meet evening peak demand is projected to be Rs. 3-4/kWh by 2030, which is lower than the variable cost of nearly half (80-100 GW) of India's existing coal capacity. Recent large-scale Round-The-Clock power and storage auctions by the <keyword id="19903557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-energy-corporation-of-india" source="keywords">Solar Energy Corporation of India</keyword> (SECI) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have demonstrated the cost-effectiveness of energy storage in India. IECC says that "our analysis has demonstrated that energy efficiency measures could avoid 40-50 GW of additional load during the evening peak hours." The India Energy and Climate Centre has prepared this report in collaboration with key stakeholders in government, regulatory commissions, and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Ride-hailing major Uber on Thursday announced a partnership with electric vehicle fleet operator Lithium Urban Technologies to deploy over 1,000 EVs in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Uber said it has already deployed more than 100 such electric vehicles (all sedan), such as Mahindra eVerito and Tata Tigor EV, on its platform. Over the next 12 months, the company said it remains committed to scaling up to 2,000 electric vehicles on its platform, including the Lithium EVs. "After our partnerships with Yulu, Mahindra and SUN Mobility, this is our fourth partnership in this space and Uber will always remain committed to providing smarter mobility, building greener cities and creating healthier lives," said Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia said. Lithium's charging hubs in the selected cities have the capacity to charge multiple cars and buses simultaneously. While a fast charger can charge a sedan in 90 minutes, a slow charger can do that in 8 to 9 hours. "Our partnership with Uber has the potential to significantly add to the number of electric kilometers covered by cars in every city. Electric vehicles are particularly well-suited to the shared economy, and that's why we're seeing their early adoption, most noticeably in fleets," said Ashwin Mahesh, Co-Founder and CEO, Lithium Urban Technologies. According to the 2019 ‘IQAir; rankings, 14 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India. Uber partners with Lithium Urban Tech to onboard 1,000 EVs in India

Have you ever heard about Formula E, the class of auto racing that only uses electric-powered cars? Launched in 2014, this competition of electric vehicles (EVs) has 12 races in 10 cities - from Hong Kong to Montreal - and 20 drivers in 10 teams sponsored by of leading automakers like Audi, BMW, DS (the new upmarket brand from PSA Peugeot Citroen), and Renault. From India, it has Mahindra, which got into the EV segment after acquiring Chetan Maini's Reva Electric in 2010, followed by subsequent investments in product development. In the ongoing 2016-17 championship, Mahindra Racing stands third, only behind Renault and Audi. Not only this, hydrogen fuel cell technologies are also seeing fast paced research and developments, and lower costs too. Fuel cell cars also have an edge over EVs, that they can be refueled as quickly as petrol or diesel vehicles and don’t need eight hours for being recharged, like EVs. Also, they can travel further between fill-ups, but one fueling station would cost up to $2 million ('13 crore) to build, which is a major issue. As per experts, Indian government's vision of a blanket technological direction should be reconsidered, keeping in mind the topography and density of the number of cities we have. While it’s true that encouraging and incentivising new technologies is vital, the government and industry also needs to rethink the EV business model. "As EVs are ideally suited for urban transport and specifically last mile connectivity, the government will need to promote the idea of working with fleet aggregators. A new development from Pratt &amp; Whitney, a unit of <keyword id="222895" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="United-Technologies">United Technologies</keyword> Corporation, could cut fuel use by a whopping 15 percent, potentially yielding huge savings for airlines.
The key, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielfisher/2013/01/23/the-billion-dollar-bet-on-jet-tech-thats-making-flying-more-efficient">Daniel Fisher at Forbes reports</a>, is the addition of an 18-inch gearbox to the front of the jet engine.
It slows down the plane's turbines, making the bypass fans more efficient, as they operate better at lower speeds. That efficiency yields a significant drop in fuel use.
Called the Fan Drive Gear System, the new gearbox has the added benefit of making the engine quieter, a bonus for airlines looking to add flights in urban areas where noise levels are a concern.
The importance of fuel-efficiency to the airline industry is proved by the seriousness of the problems with Boeing's new Dreamliner passenger jet. The passenger jet uses a large, powerful lithium-ion battery that allows for the replacement of some mechanical components with electrical systems, saving weight and fuel.

Now airlines are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-have-egg-on-their-face-after-the-dreamliner-crisis-2013-1">left with expensive planes they cannot fly</a> until further notice, and Boeing has suspended deliveries on the hundreds of jets airlines have already ordered.
While the <keyword id="1366308" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fuel-efficient">fuel-efficient</keyword> Dreamliner is yielding only problems for Boeing, Pratt &amp; Whitney is already reaping the profits of the $1 billion it put into developing the Fan Drive Gear System. In the world of aircraft manufacturing, that is a minor investment.
This month, Embraer became the fifth aircraft manufacturer to <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/embraer-selects-pratt--whitney-purepower-geared-turbofan-engine-as-exclusive-power-for-second-generation-of-e-jets-186072512.html">select Pratt &amp; Whitney's PurePower Geared Turbofan engine</a>, for use in its second generation of regional E-Jets. That engine uses the new Fan Drive Gear System.
Forbes gives the credit for the windfall to United Technologies Corporation CEO Louis Chênevert, who made the gamble on adding the gearbox to the engine, which posed considerable complications.
Furthermore, the revenue Pratt &amp; Whitney gets from new contracts converts directly into profit, because Chênevert chose to fund research costs with current earnings, rather than capitalize them.
Meanwhile, Boeing is still waiting to see a return on the <a href="http://seattletimes.com/html/businesstechnology/2016310102_boeing25.html">$32 billion it invested</a> in the efficient Dreamliner.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman announced the National Hydrogen Mission during the Budget 2021-22 to gain from this universally-available element. The green energy source could also bring together some of India’s biggest companies like Reliance, Tatas, Mahindras, and Indian Oil, according to Chaitanya Giri — a fellow of space and ocean studies with the Mumbai-based think tank Gateway House who wrote a paper on the <a href="https://www.gatewayhouse.in/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Methane-Economy_FINAL.pdf">Methane Economy. </a> According to him, the need of the hour is a coalition of stakeholders like the Hydrogen Council or the European Hydrogen Coalition. “Companies like Indian Oil, the Tatas, the Mahindras, the Eicher — let them be a part of the coalition. Then speciality chemicals companies like Reliance can be also a part of it,” he told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. Why does India need a hydrogen coalition? The answer is simple — no one company nor an industry can pull this off alone. You need the auto sector, fuel companies, speciality chemicals and advanced materials companies to work together. To make hydrogen a feasible solution, India doesn’t need just fuel — it will need cars that can process it. It also needs fueling stations and technology to ensure it remains safe as Hydrogen is an explosive element by nature. Countries like Germany have already demonstrated that a coalition is an excellent way forward. It <a href="https://bioenergyinternational.com/research-development/germany-pledges-eur-300-million-for-green-hydrogen-research">aim</a>s to set up 400 hydrogen fueling stations by 2023. “They are using the Hydrogen Council to the best extent possible,” said Giri. India can also seek help from Norway, Sweden or New Zealand to create a blueprint of a system. But their projects have to be scaled to meet the size of India. The population of these countries are only one-fourth the size of urban cities in India — Norway has a population of 55 lakh whereas Mumbai has over two crore people. At best, their national-scale ideas can be replicated to Indian cities but can be useful initially. Giri believes that international players with technology to make hydrogen safe — like Air Products and Linde — are already here in India. “These companies will take up contracts for setting up gas infrastructure and storage devices alongside the highways. They will be crucial for dispensing infrastructure like gas fueling stations,” he said. How will India make Hydrogen? Currently, there are two approaches to collect hydrogen. One is the electrolysis of water. However, water is a scarce resource. The other is <keyword id="6354703" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="natural-gas">natural gas</keyword> which can be split into two parts Hydrogen and one part Carbon. The hydrogen can be used for fuel and the leftover carbon, once solidified, can be used to create speciality materials for sectors like space, aerospace, auto, shipbuilding, electronics and more. While these two approaches are already on the market, there is one more approach which is not yet business-ready — absorbing Methane directly from the air and then using scrubbers to convert that gas into hydrogen and carbon. Prototypes are already in the works in Europe, Saudi Arabia and the US. “We just need to implement them on-ground and commercialise these technologies in a way that you have a substantial quantity of fuel,” explained Giri. What will happen to lithium batteries and electric cars? Electric cars are currently the flavour of the season but the use of lithium batteries comes with a set of challenges. For one, most of the lithium batteries are imported and there are ‘range anxiety’ issues which hydrogen fuel can ease. Electric cars can go for around 200-250 kilometres before needing to recharge. Hydrogen cars will be able to go twice the distance if not more. That means less fueling stations and less stress for the drivers. Most importantly, there’s more hydrogen around than there is lithium in the world. “Lithium batteries will fall behind due to the sheer abundance of Hydrogen,” said Giri. Hydrogen, if done right, will be a good alternative for a conventional internal combustion engine. It can also help meet the massive energy needs of India’s exploding population. The Maxwell falls under NASA's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers/armstrong/images/X-Planes/index.html">X-plane "experimental planes" category</a> and is the first piloted X-plane in 20 years. NASA's principal investigator Sean Clarke told Business Insider that this two-decade gap is because several X-plane aircraft that NASA has developed over the last 10 to 20 years have been autonomous.The decision to put a pilot in the Maxwell came because NASA's test pilots are "high performance and [NASA gets] so much benefit from having them in the seat," Clarke said. Having pilots on the aircraft simplifies its design because the pilot can spot and diagnose issues while operating the aircraft.However, NASA didn't build the X-57 body: an Italian Tecnam P2006T served as the starting point for the Maxwell. NASA then <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/specials/X57/modification.html#4">tested and outfitted - through multiple modification series - the P2006T</a> with new batteries, instruments, smaller wings, and electric motors instead of the traditional double-piston engines.The inspiration for the X-57's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/specials/X57/electric-airplane.html">"Maxwell" nickname</a> came from a 19th-century physicist who specialized in electromagnetism: James Clerk Maxwell.

Greater Noida, Feb 5 () Homegrown auto major Mahindra &amp; Mahindra on Wednesday introduced electric variant of its compact SUV KUV100 at starting price of Rs 8.25 lakh (ex showroon Delhi post FAME benefits) at Auto Expo here. The company claims that electric KUV 100 (eKUV 100) is India's most affordable passenger electric vehicle in the segmen. eKUV100 offers peak power output of 40kW, torque of 120 Nm and a range of 147 km, ideal for city commuters. It comes with automatic transmission and could be fast charged to 80 per cent within 60 minutes. Besides, the company showcased e-XUV300, which is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2021 to strengthen its position in the EV segment. The company, part of USD 20.7 billion Mahindra group has also showcased Aton, a new age urban mobility solution and Funster, a roadster electric concept with convertible rooftop. "It is our firm belief that shared mobility would drive large scale adoption of electric vehicles and hence our product offerings would continue to redefine shared mobility space. We intend to offer widest range of vehicles to meet the needs of shared mobility, " said Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Managing Director Pawan Goenka here. He further said " affordability" is the guiding principle of the company in EV category. Speaking on e-KUV 100, he said it was an ideal vehicle for shared mobility and personal mobility. Sharing the details of e-KUV 100, Mahindra's Head of Electric Vehicle Development Ashish Malik said it would give the thrill of driving an SUV and eco-friendly feeling at the same time. " It comes with a city friendly motor of 15.9 KV, which is perfect for city commute. It delivers power of 40 kw and torque of 120 Nm. The range is almost 150 km," he said. It can be fast charged to 80 per cent in 55 minutes. "It comes with a liquid cool battery pack and also offers the convenience and comfort of auto transmission and many connected car features as pre cool and switch it off and on remotely or even digital connected features which would be revealed at the launch," said Malik. While talking about eXUV300, Goenka said, "it would be launched in the second half of 2021." The eXUV300 is powered by a powerful motor and a large battery capacity ensures a long range. It has a new futuristic design with new features, smart and premium interiors with blue highlights to accentuate the new character of this SUV. It has been built on a platform that has 5-star safety rating from GNCAP. According to Goenka, the company has invested around Rs 1,700 crore on development of electric vehicles which includes technology, infrastructure and products. "Right now we are investing another Rs 500 crore to set up a new R&amp;D centre at Bengaluru and a new capacity which we are setting at Pune," he said. Goenka further said shared mobility would be the driver of growth as it would be commercially viable. "I do believe that in EV in India the primary segment for drive the growth would be shared mobility. The reason is that the EV would be commercially viable. They have to be driven 150 to 200 km in a day which cannot happen in personal use mobility," he said adding " that is the reason Mahindra is focussing on shared mobility before we get into vehicle like eKUV 100 or eXUV 300." The company also has plans to launch Treo.4 of its first lithium battery based three-wheeler auto. "This will have everything locally manufactured except lithium cell," he said adding "it would be coming out very soon". On the future of electric three-wheelers, he said: I wouldn't be surprised if in 3 to 5 years 50 per cent three-wheelers sold in India are electric three-wheelers." While talking about Funster, Goenka said it was designed at the company's own design studio at Mumbai. Funster offers an output of 230 kW with a top speed of 200 kmph, clocking 0 to 100 kmph in 5 seconds. Mahindra launches eKUV100 priced at Rs 8.25 lakh

New Delhi, Jan 9 () Automobile major Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) on Thursday said India's electric vehicles dream is not far from realisation but it needs steps like priority financing and duty reduction on certain parts to push e-mobility in the country.
 The company, which sells various electric models like e-Verito and e2O, said that with more manufacturers like Tata, Hyundai, MG Motors and Maruti Suzuki coming in the segment, there will be more acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs).
 While stating that the government has done its bit to help e-mobility, the company said it was time for manufacturers to work towards reducing EV prices in order to make it viable for personal usage even as new business models in the shared mobility space proving it to be a sound proposition.
 "Government has done what needs to be done... Electric vehicle dream is now not very far and with many players coming in, Tatas have announced their vehicles, Hyundai have launched their Kona, MG has announced their EV and Maruti has talked about its EV as well, with that we will see more and more EVs coming in," Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Managing Director Pawan Goenka told reporters here.
 This certainly will make it more acceptable when we see many more products on the road for public to start using EVs, he added.
 Goenka further said it was now up to the companies to take it forward in order to make e-mobility affordable.
 "OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) need to reduce prices of electric vehicles by 8-10 per cent. We are working on it. Reduced prices would help in better offtake of such vehicles," Goenka said.
 Commenting specifically on Mahindra, he said the company would like to reduce the price of e-Verito to around Rs 11 lakh from Rs 12 lakh currently.
 "To achieve that, we are focussing on localisation and also with cell prices going down, it should help. Right now, there is 5 per cent duty on import of cells, if that can be reduced then there can be a reduction of at least Rs 20,000 in vehicle price," he said.
 Highlighting the current challenges faced by the EV sector, he said that one of the major hurdles is in financing as banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) are reluctant to give loans as they are not sure about the resale value of EVs.
 "At present, interest on loans for electric three-wheelers are 5-6 per cent higher than those of diesel or CNG vehicles. If we can have priority financing for EVs at a lower rate, it will help accelerate growth of the segment," Goenka said adding that electricity charges at a lower slab for charging would also help.
 Outlining Mahindra's strategy in the electric segment, he said the company would be focussed on shared mobility space over the next few years.
 "Our focus is on shared mobility and is in tune with the government policy. the company is working with state government, fleet operators to make electric mobility viable. Mahindra now has around 22,000-23,000 electric vehicles on ground," Goenka said.
 He said the company's current portfolio with range of 150-200 km was more than sufficient to take care the needs of fleet operators. Mahindra has a long-term association with electric fleet operator Lithium Urban Technologies.
 The companies now have a fleet of over 1,000 electric vehicles on the ground.
 Elaborating on Mahindra's product strategy in the electric segment, Goenka said the company plans to launch e-KUV100 in the first quarter of next fiscal which would be priced competitively and cost less then Rs 9 lakh.
 "We have the Atom (quadricycle), last-mile connectivity four-wheeler that will be launched in the third quarter of the coming financial year and that would hopefully redefine last-mile connectivity," he said.
 Goenka further said the company will launch high-range electric XUV300 in 2021, and "that will be our first entry into the personal use segment" while all other products are designed for shared mobility.
 M&amp;M is working on localising the components from April this year and only battery cells would be imported thereafter, he added.
 When asked about the company's orders for state-owned EESL, he said that while it did not work out but the aggressive plan by the government helped in bringing the spotlight on EVs and helped in building awareness.
 He also admitted that vehicles supplied to EESL were good for shared mobility but not suited for personal usage of "senior officials of the government, who did not like them".
