The trade route was closed rather suddenly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, forcing Indian traders to return from the <keyword id="22003706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taklakot-mart" source="keywords">Taklakot mart</keyword> in Tibet leaving behind their woollen products. Five years have passed but the route has not been opened, an organisation of border traders in Dharchula said. The traders who belong to the <keyword id="22005864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhotia-tribe" source="keywords">Bhotia tribe</keyword> started to raise their demand for reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh after China recently began the process of implementing a pact, in which it had agreed to open all 14 trade passes with Nepal. The implementation of the agreement inked by China and Nepal in December, 2022 began on May 25 this year, when China opened Piangi pass situated in Dolpa district of eastern Nepal, president of Bharat Tibetan Simant Vyapar Samiti, Dharchula Jeewan Singh Rongkali said. Three more passes along the Indo-Tibet border in the western region of Nepal that fall in the districts of Humla, Bajang and Darchula will be opened on June 20, 30 and 25 respectively, he said. "We have so far sent 22 applications to the government of India requesting it to take up with the Chinese authorities the reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh pass but have received no response so far," Rongkali said. According to Rongkali, Indian tribal traders from Dharchula alone have left trading items worth Rs 15 lakh in <keyword id="22005865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taklakot" source="keywords">Taklakot</keyword> Mart of Tibet at the time of closure of border trade in 2019, following the Covid-19 pandemic. "We have no information if our stored goods are safe or in a state of decay. They were stored in plywood covers at the time of closure of trade," Rongkali said. "We want trade with China to be resumed through Lipulekh pass but if for some reason it is not possible then the traders should be given 15 days' time to go to Taklakot to ring back their goods," he said. Goods of over 450 Indian tribal traders have been lying there for the last 5 years, he said. According to Rongkali, over 450 Indian traders used to supply essential goods to villagers of over 45 villages of western Tibet through this trade route since 1992. "Out of over 1.5 crore trade annually, we have paid lakhs of rupees towards customs duty and other taxes to the government of India," said Rongkali. China announced in the year 2022 that it will build trans Himalayan multi-dimensional connectivity with Nepal to restructure the road and communication network with that country, Rongkali said. "As China has not given permission to open our passes along the Indo-China border, we have an apprehension that the mart made for Indian traders in Gakkhu town of Taklakot could be handed over to Nepalese traders," said Rongkali.

Indian traders demand resumption of border trade with China through Lipulekh pass

India's road construction to Lipulekh lake at 17,000 feet had sparked a diplomatic row between the India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road will shorten the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Nepal also brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. China increases troop deployment near Lipulekh Pass

Nepal bans all Indian news channels except DD News

Amid border tension at eastern Ladakh, <keyword id="9949871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chinese-construction-activities">Chinese construction activities</keyword> were observed near the border at Uttarakhand. "Hut-like structures on the Chinese side, very close to Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal, were observed," sources said on Wednesday. "It was also found that China is engaged in construction activities in Chinese side of the General Area of Jojo village, Champa Maidan. The Jojo village is approximately seven to eight kilometres from Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal," said sources. Indian security agencies are now keeping close watch on movements of Chinese People's Liberation Army troops near Uttarakhand borders touching Nepal. With escalation in India and China border tension, Indian intelligence had flagged earlier that the Nepal government has directed its forces to "closely monitor" the activities of <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> at Lipulekh area. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. Nepal government's Ministry of Home Affairs issued directions to Nepalese Armed Police Force (NAPF) to closely monitor Indian Army activities in the general area of Lipulekh. Further at Lipulekh, 44 battalion of the NAPF have been deployed. It was also found that China has increased its troop deployment at Lipulekh. China has deployed 150 Light Combined Arms Brigade. The brigade was moved in August from towards the Lipulekh tri-junction. They have reinforced troops in Pala, around 10 km from the border. The land there is fertile and has a concentration of industries yet, the region feels discriminated against by Kathmandu. As a result, protests broke out and the Madhesi movement launched a blockade — instigated by India to force Nepal to amend its constitution — during KP Sharma Oli’s premiership in September 2015 which lasted till February last year. During the course of the blockade, more than 50 people were killed. The agitation also crippled Nepal's economy as supplies from India were blocked. In the absence of supplies from India, China stepped in. It invested heavily in helping the landlocked country layout new roads — including those which connect it to Tibet. The roads, in turn, helped Nepal import essential products like petroleum, which it was only importing from India before the blockade — reducing its dependence on its peninsular neighbour to its big brother in the north. China reportedly also has plans to lay a strategic railway network connecting Kathmandu and Shigatse in Tibet where it would join an existing railway line to Lhasa, Tibet's capital. It has offered Nepal four ports for shipment of goods as well to further reduce the import of materials from India. Nepal's new map is eating into India to please China

Gangtok, Apr 23 () The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and border trade between India and China through the Nathula pass will not take place this year due to the coronavirus outbreak, Sikkim Tourism Minister B S Panth said. The border trade through Nathula Pass was scheduled to begin in May while the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the route was slated to commence in June. The Ministry of External Affairs organises the yatra from June-September each year through two different routes -- Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) and Nathu La Pass (Sikkim). Kailash Mansoravar is in Tibet.The yatra is undertaken by hundreds of people every year.Panth told reporters on Wednesday that the state government has communicated its decision to the Centre.The Nathula border trade between India and Chinaresumed in 2006 after a gap of more than four decades while the annual Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the pass had begun two years ago."Sikkim's tourism sector has been severely hit due tothe coronavirus outbreak, with the state government losing out revenue of more than Rs 10 crore," the minister said.The loss of revenue is due to the ban on entry ofdomestic and foreign tourists to the state since the firstweek of March in view of the coronavirus outbreak, he said.The state government is assessing the losses incurred by various stakeholders due to COVID-19 and will send a report to the Centre, requesting it to adequately compensate all those who have lost business and livelihood due to disruption in tourism-related activities in Sikkim, the minister said. Army chief Gen MM Naravane will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday on a three-day crucial visit, which Indian officials here say will deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship between the two armies and provide an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence partnership for mutual benefit. Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. I am sure this visit will go a long way in strengthening the bonds of friendship that the two armies cherish," Gen Naravane said in New Delhi ahead of the visit. Nepal and India meet to discuss development projects amid border tensions

The Chief of Army Staff also addressed the middle-level student officers at the Army Command and Staff College at Shivapuri on the outskirts of Kathmandu. During the interaction, he shared his experience with the student officers, they said. On Thursday, Gen Naravane was conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at a special ceremony, a decades old tradition that reflects the strong ties between the two militaries. His visit is largely aimed at resetting the bilateral ties that came under severe strain following a bitter border row early this year. It was the first high-level visit from India to Kathmandu since ties between the two neighbours came under strain after the Himalayan nation came up with a new political map in May claiming several areas in Uttarakhand to be part of its territory. Nepal had protested after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal claimed that the road passed through its territory. Days later, it came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. India too had published a new map in November 2019 showing the areas as its territories. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. India's decision to send the Army chief to Nepal to reset the ties is seen as part of a larger exercise by New Delhi to rejuvenate relations with Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan in the wake of greater efforts by China to expand its influence in the region. India-China to hold yet another round of talks on border impasse — even as China builds up troops near Nepal border

<ul><li>Nepal has issued a statement hoping that India and China should resolve any animosity over the clash along their borders through bilateral negotiations. </li><li>Nepal statement comes after senior members of its government were reportedly divided in the leading party’s support of China at a time when India-China relations were already under pressure. </li><li>Nepal recently updated its map, which got rejected by India on the ground of ‘artificial enlargement’. </li></ul>Nepal has issued a statement on the India-China border dispute along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) expressing that the countries will resolve any disagreements ‘in the spirit of good neighbourliness’. “Nepal has always stood firmly for regional and world peace. In the context of recent developments in the Galwan Valley area between our friendly neighbours India and China, Nepal is confident that both the neighbouring countries will resolve, in the spirit of good neighbourliness, their mutual differences through peaceful means,” read the statement by Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This comes after the ruling party in Nepal, the Nepal Communist Party (NPC), was reportedly a <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/nepal-ruling-party-split-on-meet-with-china-india-row-6467261/">divided house</a> on Friday, June 19. Top leader leaders were questioning the country’s move to align with the Communist Party of China (CPC) at a time when relations between China and India are already under pressure. “Going to the lap of China just because we have a problem with the Government of India at the moment is neither wise nor our party’s policy,” said one of the senior party leaders. India-Nepal border issue Earlier this week, Nepal passed a Constitution Amendment Bill to update the country’s map. India has rejected the map since the new boundaries eat into Indian territory — including parts of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani areas in the northwest. It accused Nepal of ‘artificial enlargement’ calling the territorial claim untenable. Nepal believes India-China should resolve border issue 'in the spirit of good neighbourliness'

As China's commitment for disengagement at the border in Eastern Ladakh remains unsatisfactory, India has directed its armed forces to prepare for a long haul, sources said on Tuesday. The revelation came during a review meeting on Tuesday afternoon in the South Block as deliberation took place over the fifth round of Corps Commander level talks. The members of the China Study Group along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met to discuss the results of dialogue during the fifth round of Corps Commander level talks. Sources said that Chinese disengagement plan at <keyword id="1255425" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pangong-Lake">Pangong Lake</keyword> and Depsang remains "unsatisfactory". It was also decided that there was no question of diluting India's stand. "Future strategies for disengagement at the border to be chalked out and till then forces have been told to plan for a long haul," said a source privy to the meeting. It was also discussed that Beijing has started troop and material build-up in depth areas across the 3,488-km Line of Actual Control (LAC). The fifth round of talks took place between the 14 Corps commander Lt General Harinder Singh and South Xinjiang Military District chief Major General Liu Lin at Moldo on August 2 and it lasted for 10 hours. India found that the Chinese side has started the build-up in three sectors of the LAC -- western (Ladakh), middle (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh) and eastern (Sikkim, Arunachal). Intelligence agencies also alerted that China has also mobilised soldiers near Uttarakhand's Lipulekh Pass, a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley. India had urged China to remove forces from Pangong Lake and Gogra where disengagement has not taken place. At Pangong Lake, China has strengthened their positions between Finger-5 and 8, and India is to take up this move very strongly. The mountain spurs jutting into the lake are referred to as Fingers in military parlance. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has refused to pull back eastwards from the 8-km stretch it has occupied from Finger-4 to Finger-8 by building scores of new fortifications there since early May. The Chinese troops are also in Depsang which continues to block Indian soldiers from going to their traditional patrolling in the region. The Depsang Plains, a table-top plateau to the north of Galwan, remains a major hotspot due to its strategic location providing access to the logistical hub and airstrip at Daulat Beg Oldie and the critical Karakoram Pass in the north. Since the PLA troops are not moving back as per consensus, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> has kicked off the massive logistical exercise for advance winter stocking with rations, specialised clothing, prefabricated shelters, Arctic tents and other equipment to maintain. India has deployed over 35,000 troops in Ladakh. China is not complying with the roadmap for a complete pullback that was drawn out during the Corps Commander level meet on July 14. Till now two rounds of deliberations have taken at Moldo (China) and two in Chushul (India). The countries are locked in a three-month-long stand-off at multiple points, hitherto unprecedented along the border. China had changed the status quo on the LAC at various places, moving inside the Indian territories. India has objected to it and is taking up the matter with China at all levels. The troop disengagement happened only at patrolling point-14 in Galwan Valley, the site of the June 15 clashes, and patrolling point-15 in Hot Springs. On June 15, as many as 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese soldiers were killed in a violent clash in the Galwan Valley. Indian Army plans for the long haul as talks with China remain unsatisfactory

In fact, he has a three-fold explanation for why China is choosing now to move against India — tactical, regional and global. The tactical issue between India and China “Chinese are really upset about progress in our border infrastructure development. We’ve been building roads, and they feel that this will negate their advantage,” explained Bhatia. India has recently revamped its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/experts-believe-that-the-india-china-border-dispute-is-unlikely-to-turn-into-another-war-like-the-one-in-1962/articleshow/76128454.cms">Darbuk-Shayok-Dault Beg Oldie</a> road and the primary users are in the Indian Amry. The road is critical for its connectivity in the region of north-eastern Ladakh. However, the latter wants India to remain restricted to South Asia, according to Bhatia. “They have coordinated with Pakistan and Nepal to create embarrassment for India,” he said. Nepal recently passed the Constitution Amendment Bill to update the country’s map — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/amid-indo-china-tensions-nepal-passes-new-map-bill-in-the-upper-house-showing-parts-of-india-as-its-own-territory/articleshow/76442175.cms">a map that eats into Indian territory</a>. Whereas China is trying to reduce you to a mere South Asian power,” said Bhatia. China doesn’t want India to be a global superpower India has been conducting regular weekly meetings with its QUAD counterparts — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/foreign-policy/news/the-fear-of-china-has-put-the-global-spotlight-on-india-its-raked-up-three-comprehensive-strategic-partnerships-in-the-last-24-months/slidelist/76258833.cms">Japan, Australia and the US</a>. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been busy strengthening India’s international ties. Most recently, India entered into a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/foreign-policy/news/a-former-diplomat-explains-why-four-agreements-will-take-india-and-australia-ties-to-the-next-level/articleshow/76206931.cms">Comprehensive Strategic Partnership</a> with Australia elevating their bilateral ties to a new level. “Chinese are not very happy with the growing proximity between Delhi and Washington and other partners. They are not happy with, you know, the strength,” explained Bhatia. In lieu of these reasons, Bhatia believes that its unlikely that the clash along the border is a mere distraction tool. And, it would have taken weeks of preparations to pull off. The diplomatic toolkit is one weapon that India has to respond to China’s push — like postponing the Russia-India-China summit or calling a special session of QUAD. The other is its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/economy/news/the-boycott-of-chinas-products-will-be-easier-said-than-done-smartphones-acs-and-cars-will-become-more-expensive/articleshow/76419573.cms">economic toolkit</a>. “That is where the political leadership will weigh the strength of public opinion in India on the one hand and the need of the Indian industry on the other hand,” said Bhatia.
