<ul class="summary-list"><li>Astronomers discovered a repeating <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/repeating-fast-radio-burst-signal-traced-to-distant-spiral-galaxy-2020-1">fast radio burst</a> that lasted 1,000 times longer than average bursts.</li><li>Researchers hope by studying the burst they'll be abe to pinpoint its origin.</li></ul>Astronomers have discovered a strange and persistent radio signal from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-snaps-side-view-of-galaxy-behind-southern-ring-nebula-2022-7">galaxy</a> roughly 1 billion light-years away. Studying these flares could provide clues about their mysterious origins, and give researchers insight into the faraway reaches of the cosmos.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mysterious-fast-radio-bursts-come-from-dead-stars-2020-11">Fast radio bursts</a> are intense, but brief flashes of radio waves that originate millions to billions of light-years away from Earth. The first of these cosmic flashes, known as the <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1147532">"Lorimer burst,"</a> was discovered in 2007. Since then, hundreds of <keyword id="14455499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fast-radio-bursts" source="Orion">fast radio bursts</keyword> have been detected — but their exact astrophysical origins remain a mystery.Fast radio bursts typically last milliseconds. But the newly detected signal, named FRB 20191221A, is about three seconds long — about 1,000 times longer than average, according to the new study, which was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-04841-8">Nature</a> on Wednesday. On December 21, 2019, astronomers monitoring data from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) detected a signal that caught their attention."I inspected the signal by eye and noticed that it was formed by multiple pulses — it looked a bit like an electrocardiogram," Daniele Michilli, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and study co-author who viewed CHIME's incoming data, told Insider.Upon further inspection, Michilli and his team found the signal contained a clear periodic pattern, similar to a heartbeat, which repeated every 0.2 seconds. "That surprised us a lot, because there are not many sources in the universe that can produce that kind of signal," Michilli said. Two examples of predictable and reliable signals exist within our own galaxy, Michilli said, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spooky-spinning-object-in-our-galactic-backyard-stumps-astronomers-2022-1">magnetars</a> and radio pulsars. A magnetar is a dense, dying star with an incredibly powerful magnetic field. A pulsar is the spinning leftovers of an exploded star, which emits narrow beams of radio waves, sweeping past Earth like the beacon of a lighthouse. Astronomers use these consistently repeating signals "to study the universe and to probe our theories," Michilli said.Most fast radio bursts flare just once, Michilli said, but rarely, the signal repeats and is detected reliably. To that end, CHIME is expanding, via a collaboration with additional telescopes across North America, which will observe the same patch of sky together, in order to triangulate the radio bursts' locations and link them to specific galaxies."We want to know exactly where they come from and study their local environment," Michilli said, adding, "And in the future, we hope to look at some of them with this new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasas-webb-telescope-snaps-first-full-color-image-2022-7">James Webb Space Telescope</a>, to see exactly what they are and what's around them."

The blobs don't seem to be planets because they follow a random pattern rather than a predictable, planet-like orbit.A giant swarm of comets or a broken-up planet might cause the strange phenomenon, but no particularly convincing astronomical explanations have emerged. That's why some believe the weird blobs might be a Dyson sphere - an enormous group of solar panels orbiting a star to harvest its energy - therefore implying that we may be observing technological "megastructure" built by aliens.As Penn State astronomer Kimberly Cartier <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-astronomers-behind-the-alien-hype-are-saying-2015-10?_ga=1.55539112.2038876323.1444098051">told Business Insider</a>, however, the media coverage has "gotten a bit out of hand."Tech Insider has spotted what we think is the <a href="https://twitter.com/coreyspowell/status/657919613288730624">best explanation yet</a> for KIC 8462852, however, and it doesn't involve aliens at all.Jim Galasyn, a writer for the blog <a href="http://www.desdemonadespair.net/2015/10/did-kepler-space-telescope-discover.html?m=1">Desdemona Despair</a>, saw a <a href="http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0004-637X/774/1/53;jsessionid=7CF9D93FDAF6DF92CC52DD1D1AF42EC9.c1.iopscience.cld.iop.org">2013 research paper</a> posted by commenter "Michael" on a story from <a href="http://www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=34284">Centauri Dreams</a>. That paper explains how some stars don't have a uniform brightness level because they're irregularly shaped and "oblate" discs.As the researchers write in that study:This creates patches of darker and lighter regions within these kinds of stars, so the light curves that make it back to Earth won't look completely uniform. What's more, planets often orbit "obliquely" from Earth's perspective and not directly in front of a star.So those especially weird light curves from KIC 8462852 could easily be caused by planets passing in front of darker and lighter regions - not alien artifacts floating around it.In the image from the research paper below, the red sphere represents an oblate star, and the smaller circles illustrate the path that a planet might take around the star. Even if the trillion-or-so planets in every galaxy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldilocks-exoplanet-habitability-internal-heat-2016-8">aren't habitable</a>, countless <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/earth-water-ice-volume-versus-planets-moons-2016-11">water-rich moons</a> orbiting these lifeless worlds might be.And yet, in spite of these numbers, humans have yet to identify any signals from intelligent aliens. The prescient question that physicist Enrico Fermi posed in 1950 - "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-real-story-behind-the-fermi-paradox-2016-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">where is everybody?</a>" - remains unanswered.However, an upcoming study in The Astronomical Journal, which we learned about from <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612232/the-8-dimensional-space-that-must-be-searched-for-alien-life/amp/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MIT Technology Review</a>, suggests humanity has barely sampled the skies, and thus has no grounds to be cynical.According to the paper, all searches for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, have examined barely a swimming pool's worth of water from a figurative ocean of signal space."We haven't really looked much," <a href="https://sites.psu.edu/seticourse/author/szk381/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shubham Kanodia</a>, a graduate student in astronomy who co-wrote the study, said during a NASA <a href="https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/technosignatures2018/agenda/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"technosignatures" workshop</a> in Houston, Texas on September 26.The study suggests that somewhere in that ocean of space - right now, within the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-milky-way-galaxy-looks-like-2016-9">Milky Way galaxy</a> - intelligent aliens might be saying, "hello, we are here."But we'd have no way of knowing, at least not yet.<h2>Defining a 'cosmic haystack' in the search for aliens</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/multimedia/pub/135162.php">M. Some scan large swaths of the sky for powerful signals, while others target individual star systems for weaker signals.Yet aside from a few anomaly signals that never repeated (like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/were-close-to-solving-the-mystery-of-the-wow-signal-2016-4">"Wow!" detection of 1977</a>), these searches have turned up empty-handed.Kanodia and his colleagues at Penn State University wanted to know how much of the figurative "cosmic haystack" SETI projects have covered, and to what extent they could improve the hunt for the alien "needle."The group agrees with famous SETI astronomer Jill Tarter, who said in 2010 that it's silly to conclude intelligent aliens do not exist nearby just because we haven't yet found their beacons. Even if such signals exist and are aimed right at Earth, her thinking goes, we've scanned so little of the sky and may not be looking for the right type of signal, or for long enough, to find them."Suppose I tell you there's a cool thing happening in Houston right now," Kanodia said during his NASA talk. "I do not tell you where it is. I do not tell you when it is happening. I do not tell you what it is. Is it in a book store? Is it a music concert? I give you absolutely no priors. It would be a difficult thing to try and find it."He added: "Houston, we have a problem. Hurt (SSC/Caltech)</a></div></div></div>In their study, Kanodia and his colleagues built a mathematical model of what they consider a reasonably sized cosmic haystack.Their haystack is a sphere of space nearly 33,000 light-years in diameter, centered around Earth. This region captures the Milky Way's bustling core, as well as many giant globular clusters of stars above and below our home galaxy.They also picked eight dimensions of a search for aliens - factors like signal transmission frequency, bandwidth, power, location, repetition, polarization, and modulation (i.e. complexity) - and defined reasonable limits for each one."This leads to a total 8D haystack volume of 6.4 × 10116 m5Hz2 s/W," the authors wrote.That is 6.4 followed by 115 zeros - as MIT Technology review described it, "a space of truly gargantuan proportions."<h2>How much of this haystack have we searched?</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.seti.org/seti-institute/project/details/ata-image-gallery">SETI Institute</a>Instead of asking, "Where is everybody?" we should be asking, "Why are we barely looking?"</div></div></div>Kanodia and his colleagues then examined the past 60 years' worth of SETI projects and reconciled them against their haystack.The researchers determined that humanity's collective search for extraterrestrials adds up to about 0.00000000000000058% of the haystack's volume."This is about a bathtub of water in all of Earth's oceans," Kanodia said. "Or about a five-centimeter-by-five-centimeter patch of land on all of Earth's surface area."Those numbers make humanity's search efforts seem feeble. But Kanodia views it as an opportunity - especially because modern telescopes are getting better at scanning more objects with greater sensitivity and speed. For example, he said, a 150-minute search this year by the Murchison Widefield Array covered a larger percentage of the haystack than any other SETI project in history."That's the purpose of this haystack ... to help better-inform future search strategies," Kanodia said.He also noted that the team's calculations assume there is only one alien civilization within range of Earth, and not any more than that. But more than one may exist relatively close by."In the ocean analogy, we do not have to drain the entire ocean to find a fish," he said. "In the Houston analogy, if there were two cool things, you wouldn't have to look as hard."Still, there's no guarantee that a figurative fish or needle or cool thing is out there at all.Another group of scientists, this one at Oxford University, recently took a different approach to the question of aliens. Instead of focusing on the likelihood of finding "technosignatures" that could be detected, they examined the likelihood that intelligent alien life exists at all.The Oxford researchers examined dozens of authoritative studies about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drake-equation-formula-alien-life-calculation-2018-7">variables in the Drake Equation</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A star positioned near the center of the Milky Way seems to have come from outside of our galaxy. </li><li>The interloper is thought to have traveled from a galaxy that has since disappeared. </li></ul>Scientists have spotted a star near the center of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-stars-appear-milky-way-edge-galaxy-collision-2020-1">Milky Way</a> that shouldn't be there.A study published Monday suggests SO-6, a star located about 0.04 light-years from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/milky-way-black-hole-spinning-fast-squishing-space-time-2023-11">black hole at the center of our galaxy</a>, could be an extragalactic star that traveled more than 50,000 light years to reach our galaxy's heart.This is the first study to show that a star from outside our galaxy could end up in the middle of it.The findings could help explain a long-standing galactic mystery: where do stars near the black hole come from? <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/milky-way-galaxy-black-hole-lights-up-suddenly-2019-8">Sagittarius A*</a>, the black hole inside our galaxy, is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-space-telescope-spots-most-distant-supermassive-black-hole-2023-7">supermassive</a> so its gravity is too intense for stars to be born in that area.<div type="image" title="milky way galaxy with zoomed in section on black hole" height="1041" width="1041" msid="105845077" hostid="261" sizebytes="51246"></div>To identify its origins, a team of scientists led by Shogo Nishiyama at Miyagi University of Education in Japan, studied the stars's composition using the Subaru Telescope, a 26-foot-wide observatory in Hawaii.They found the star was made of chemicals more often seen in <a target="_blank" href="https://subarutelescope.org/en/results/2023/12/03/3319.html">smaller galaxies that float outside the Milky Way,</a> like the Small Magellanic Cloud and the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy.The most likely theory is that SO-6 was born in a small galaxy that once orbited the Milky Way but has since disintegrated.The orphaned star, which is at least 10 billion years old, would have then been grabbed by the Milky Way's gravitational pull. It traveled at least 50,000 light years to reach Sagittarius A*, though it may have gone even farther than that as it's more likely to have gone in a spiral rather than a straight line.Scientists will now work to confirm the origin of SO-6, as well as determine if it traveled alone or with companions, lead scientist Nishiyama said."With further investigation, we hope to unravel the mysteries of stars near the supermassive black hole," he added.

Only the Model 3 Long Range is affected as it went from $54,490 to $57,990, a $2,500 price increase, the report said. The Model Y, which has become Tesla's most popular model, has received a bigger price increase with both versions of the electric SUV going up in cost. Model Y Long Range went from $62,990 to $65,990 and Model Y Performance went from $67,990 to $69,990. The <keyword id="1633343" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tesla-model-s" source="Orion">Tesla Model S</keyword> also saw its price increase significantly, and that's after a big $5,000 price increase just a few months ago. Tech: The new walking dead? Venture funds

<ul class="summary-list"><li>FC Copenhagen scored one of the most comical goals in <keyword id="82427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Europa-League">Europa League</keyword> history on Thursday night to hand Croatian side HNK Rijeka a 1-0 win.</li><li>A comedy of errors, the goal included two players tripping over each other and another getting stuck in the net. </li><li>Watch the hysterical goal in its full glory below. </li></ul>FC Copenhagen's 1-0 defeat to Croatia's HNK Rijeka in Europa League qualifying on Thursday night was hardly a classic.However, it did have one moment that will without doubt go down in the history books in the form of one of the most comical own goals of all time.The comedy of errors began in the 19th minute when Copenhagen defender Victor Nelsson attempted to clear the ball near the half way line, only to miss, take out an opposition player, and present Rijeka striker Franko Andrijasevic with a near free run on goal. Nelsson chased Andrijasevic back, however while doing so, tripped over his teammate Ragnar Sigurdsson, who had slipped to the ground due to the wet surface. Now clear through on goal, Andrijasevic lobbed the keeper, only to see his effort bounce back off the crossbar and directly into the shin of Copenhagen's Peter Ankersen and into the net.For good measure, Ankersen then fell over and became tangled in the net as Rijeka celebrated.Reactions to the goal were largely unsympathetic, with chess champion Magnus Carlsen comparing the game to a sketch by famed silent movie star Charlie Chaplin. "A new Chaplin movie being recorded in Copenhagen this afternoon," <a href="https://twitter.com/MagnusCarlsen/status/1311740640066179074?s=20">he wrote on Twitter.</a>Rijeka went on to win the tie courtesy of Ankersen's hysterical own goal, with the Croatian outfit qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League for the fourth time in 10 years.Copenhagen on the other hand missed out on qualification to the competition for only the second time since 2006.Elsewhere in Europa League qualifying, Tottenham Hotspur thumped Israeli team Maccabi Haifa 7-2 to secure its spot in the group stages, while AC Milan snuck past Portuguese side Rio Ave by way of a thrilling 24-penalty shootout.
