Researchers at the Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics (IAP), Indian Institute of Science (<keyword id="19910180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IISc" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="IISc" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="IISc">IISc</keyword>), and collaborators have designed a new <keyword id="23052480" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercapacitor" source="keywords">supercapacitor</keyword> that can be charged by shining <keyword id="19982220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="light" source="keywords">light</keyword> on it. The supercapacitors can be used in various devices, including streetlights and self-powered electronic devices such as sensors, Bengaluru-based IISc said in a press release. "Capacitors are electrostatic devices that store energy as charges on two metal plates called <keyword id="20675368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electrodes" source="keywords">electrodes</keyword>. Supercapacitors are upgraded versions of capacitors - they exploit electrochemical phenomena to store more energy," Abha Misra, Professor at IAP and corresponding author of the study published in the 'Journal of Materials Chemistry A", was quoted as saying in the release. The electrodes of the new supercapacitor were made of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods grown directly on Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide (FTO), which is transparent. It was synthesised by Pankaj Singh Chauhan, first author and CV Raman postdoctoral fellow in Misra's group at IISc. Both ZnO and FTO are semiconductors with appropriately aligned energy levels, enabling superior performance of the photo-rechargeable supercapacitor, the release said. FTO, being transparent, allows light to fall on the optically active ZnO nanorods, which charges the supercapacitor. Chauhan explained that two electrolytes -- a liquid and a semi-solid gel -- were used as the conducting medium between the electrodes. The capacity for storing charges (<keyword id="23053496" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capacitance" source="keywords">capacitance</keyword>) is inversely proportional to the distance between the electrodes, it said. "As the distance becomes very small, the capacitance shoots up," Misra stated. "In electrostatic capacitors, maintaining a small distance between electrodes is difficult. However, in a supercapacitor, the electrodes' charges attract the electrolyte's oppositely charged ions, resulting in the formation of a charge layer just atoms away from each other - called an electric double layer or EDL. This results in the high capacitance of supercapacitors," the release stated. When the researchers shined ultraviolet (UV) light on their supercapacitor, they noticed a huge increase in the capacitance, several times higher than previously reported supercapacitors. They also noticed two unusual properties. First, while capacitance generally decreases as the voltage increases, they found the reverse - their supercapacitor's capacitance under light illumination actually increased with increasing voltage. "We call it necking behaviour," said A M Rao, Professor at Clemson University, the USA, and co-author. He explained that this may be due to the high porosity of the electrodes. Second, the energy stored within the supercapacitor typically decreases when it is charged faster, because the ions in the electrolyte do not move fast enough to respond to the increased charging rate, the release said. However, with the liquid electrolyte, the team found that the energy stored in the supercapacitor surprisingly increased upon fast charging under UV light, it was noted. Mihir Parekh, a postdoctoral researcher in Rao's group, developed theoretical models to explain these novel observations. The findings open the doors to developing simultaneously fast-charging and energy-dense supercapacitors, according to him. To design their present supercapacitor, the team explored two key ideas. First, the surface area of the electrodes was increased by combining two optically active semiconductor interfaces in a way that maximises interaction with light, leading to higher charge generation. Second, a liquid electrolyte was used to ensure an effective EDL. Together, these resulted in superior performance. "The ideas were simple - but when combined together, they worked very well," Misra explained. She added that tweaking the design of the supercapacitor can enable its charging with visible and infrared light as well. The IISc-Clemson team aims to further explore and better understand the novel phenomena observed to design better supercapacitors. "Supercapacitors have lots of applications," Misra explains. For example, they can potentially replace solar cells used in streetlights. They have a high power density, so they can release charge more quickly than batteries. They can also be used to power chips in electronic devices like cell phones. "We have miniaturised supercapacitors to the micron scale so that they can be integrated along with these microelectronic chips," Misra added.

Tours that reframe the chasing aspect usually focus more on photography and have experienced photographers as guides. Whether you see the northern lights or just stars, you'll likely at least leave with dark-sky-photography knowledge.One other sign of a good tour is if guides offer to rearrange them if there are low chances of a sighting. Many northern-lights tours I've seen aren't transparent about your actual chances of seeing them and will run even if the odds are super slim. To set yourself up for success, do your own research, too. If you're planning trips centered around seeing them, travel during peak seasons. You should also look at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-sky-friday-us-solar-winds-giant-hole-sun-2023-3">Kp Index predictions</a> before committing to certain tour days. To make sure you don't miss them, you can see if your cruise offers wake-up calls when the lights appear. Many cruises do.Moreover, location and timing are important. The weather can turn quickly "because of the temperature drop that accompanies the moon shadow," he said.Being on a boat may offer some flexibility. "The deck team can make decisions to reposition based on weather and visibility reports and will do all they can to ensure guests see these events," Grigsby said.<h2 id="04b4929b-36c4-4569-81f0-4259d792bf67">See something new in the Southern Hemisphere.</h2>For those who live in the Northern Hemisphere, crossing the equator offers some new views of the sky."What's really dramatic about the Southern Hemisphere is the galactic sky that you don't really get in the Northern Hemisphere," Oluseyi said.In the Southern Hemisphere, the star-packed center of the galaxy, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-d-map-of-the-milky-way-galactic-bulge-2013-9">galactic bulge</a>, is directly overhead.There are also two satellite galaxies — the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronomers-share-images-of-galaxies-from-retired-telescopes-2022-6">Large and Small Magellanic Clouds</a>. The first time he saw them, Oluseyi said he couldn't stop staring. They're "so dang big, bright, and ever-present," he said. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Viking all offer cruises to Australia and New Zealand, southern Africa, and South America. "The lights can be so bright that you can't really see the dimmer objects, and most of the cool stuff is dim," Oluseyi said.When the lights are down, the unobstructed view can be spectacular. "I have been literally all over the world to dark sky locations," Oluseyi said, "but, man, being out in the middle of the ocean — and when they turn off the deck lights — it is one of the best."Some ships turn off their deck lights so passengers can see the skies better. You may want to inquire before you book about the cruise line's policies on this practice.Viking's rep said the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giant-phantom-jellyfish-rare-viking-cruise-submersible-2024-6">cruise line's</a> special bird-safe lighting mode helps keep birds from flying into windows but also allows passengers to see stars.If your ship is dark enough, you might still want some help seeing the stars. You can probably leave <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-basin-national-park-family-vacation-stargazing-festival-tips-2023-11">your telescope</a> at home. The waves make it too unstable to view objects well. Avoid peeking at your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/is-dark-mode-better-for-your-eyes">bright phone screen</a> because once that light hits your eyeballs, they'll have to readjust again.You can also use your phone's settings to apply a red filter, which will help your eyes stay adjusted to the night sky.You'll want to prepare to be outside for a while. "It can get cold at night," Oluseyi said. His advice for stargazing from an observatory is to dress warmly and bring snacks. But it applies anywhere. You'll want to stay comfortable and awake so you don't miss the view."You'll find yourself freezing," he said. "You'll find yourself sleepy, but it's so worth it."

The study by Japan's <keyword id="22926399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Waseda-University" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Waseda University" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Waseda University">Waseda University</keyword> enrolled 41 healthy children from fifth-grade elementary to third-year junior high school students to find out how short-term, light-intensity exercises affected the blood flow to <keyword id="21319112" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prefrontal-cortex" source="keywords">prefrontal cortex</keyword>, located in the cerebrum and known to handle cognitive functions. Researchers focused on exercises that can easily be performed on the spot without special equipment, such as stretching. Most of the exercises were performed while seated, with movements lasting 10 to 20 seconds. The team used an imaging technique -- functional near-infrared spectroscopy -- to measure changes in blood flow to the <keyword id="19985684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain" source="keywords">brain</keyword> by looking at concentrations of oxyhaemoglobin (that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues) while at rest and during the <keyword id="20067991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exercise" source="keywords">exercise</keyword>. According to the findings published in the <keyword id="20069357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scientific-reports" source="keywords">Scientific Reports</keyword> journal, the researchers found a significant increase in oxyhaemoglobin levels in multiple regions of the prefrontal cortex during all forms of exercise compared to the resting state. "By combining the types of exercise that easily increase blood flow in the prefrontal cortex identified in this study, it is possible to develop an exercise program that everyone can easily engage in to improve children's executive functions. It may also be used in the future to prevent cognitive decline in adults and the elderly," said Takashi Naito, one of the authors and a doctoral student at Waseda University. The authors further wrote that the study implies that short-duration, light-intensity exercises, provided that they entail a certain degree of cognitive and/or physical demands, can activate the prefrontal cortex and increase blood flow. Previous studies have shown that physical exercise improves cognitive function in many ways such as by improving blood flow to the brain, by causing structural changes in the brain and by promoting the forming of new brain cells, or neurons. However, as children around the world have been shown to insufficiently engage in physical exercise, leading to high levels of sedentary behaviour, the authors said that the study's results offer potential solutions. The study is a significant step forward in combating sedentary lifestyles and activating brain functions in children, thereby supporting their physical and mental growth, they said. "Our goal is to develop a light-intensity exercise program that is accessible to everyone, aiming to enhance brain function and reduce children's sedentary behaviour," Naito said.
