<ul class="summary-list"><li>I was born with macular dystrophy, which can cause partial or total loss of vision. </li><li>My family didn't prioritize education when I was growing up, but I kept advancing grades. </li></ul><p>I grew up in disadvantaged circumstances in one of the poorest neighborhoods in <a href="https://www.insider.com/jonestown-guyana-abandoned-photos">Guyana</a>. I was born with an eye disease called <a href="https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/macular-dystrophy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">macular dystrophy</a>. It's a genetic disorder that severely limits your central vision and causes progressive <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/blurry-vision-in-one-eye">vision loss</a>. There's no cure for the condition, nor can it be fixed with glasses.</p><p>Perfect vision is considered 20/20; my vision is currently 20/200 and 20/100 with glasses. Adding to my already disadvantaged situation growing up was that my country provided no disability-support services. </p><h2>Education wasn't a priority when I was growing up</h2><p>I grew up with my grandmother, and even after she died and I moved in with other relatives, education was never considered a priority in my household. My grandmother was consumed with providing us with the basic necessities, so she didn't have the headspace to accommodate an added responsibility that she may have considered secondary.  Although I was expected to attend school regularly, I wasn't forced or encouraged to complete homework or study. I also attended my neighborhood school, where many teachers were not as qualified as those in more well-off areas. </p><p>Having a degenerative eye condition with no proper educational support in school or at home proved tremendously difficult. I would sit in front of the class and still couldn't see the information on the blackboard. Teachers also didn't have the tools to support a student with a disability. </p><h2>I love reading</h2><p>Despite my low-proficiency level in reading and not being able to see the blackboard, I advanced grade levels. In high school, I was embarrassed when a teacher noted that I couldn't read, and I became determined to learn how to read well. I borrowed books from the school's library and struggled through them. </p><p>I soon realized I loved reading, although I couldn't pronounce many words. As I got older, I kept reading and pushing myself academically despite my vision limitations. I attended college in Guyana without support for my eye condition, but I still graduated.  </p><h2>I have a Ph.D. now</h2><p>When I moved to America in 2015 at 28, I was determined to further my education by completing a master's degree. I was skeptical about whether I could do it, though, because my eyesight had deteriorated further. But I soon found out about the Americans with Disabilities Act, which stipulates that universities need to provide disability-support services to students.</p><p>At the school, I was given extra time for testing and access to my professors' presentations before my classes. With these added accommodations, I started to thrive. I graduated in December 2019 with my master's degree and then started my Ph.D, both in education. in January 2020. I continued to sign up for disability support because I knew I needed those services. I successfully defended my dissertation in 2022. </p><p>Having a disability, growing up in an economically challenging situation, and not having the foundational learning needed for academic success can be disheartening. Yet there's space and opportunity in the world for us to thrive when we are willing to keep the faith, advocate for ourselves, and push to reach our academic dreams.</p>

Both the Xbox Series X/S and the Xbox One have a variety of features that make gaming accessible.</p><p>Here's everything to know about the Xbox's accessibility features, including why they're made and how to enable them.</p><h2>Why Xbox offers accessibility features</h2><p>In its <a href="https://www.theesa.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/2020-ESA_Essential_facts_070820_Final_lowres.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 annual report</a>, the Entertainment Software Association found that 46 million people who play video games have some kind of disability or require the use of assistive technology. </p><p>Yet, the industry still has a long way to go in terms of increased accessibility, according to Ian Hamilton, a committee member of <a href="https://igda-gasig.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IGDA-GASIG</a>, an advocacy group aimed at removing the barriers to better accessibility in gaming. </p><p>"We're not yet at the stage when it can be assumed that even the basics - subtitles, remapping, text size, color blindness, effect intensity - will be covered, let alone the point where we really need to be, where anyone can pick up any game and have a reasonable expectation that they won't be unnecessarily locked out," Hamilton said.</p><p>By including these features on the Xbox, Microsoft is serving a community of gamers that's both incredibly large and historically neglected. It's an important step in making sure that video games are for everyone, not just those who can play them perfectly.</p><h3>Xbox consoles have some of the best accessibility features</h3><p>Gamers tell Insider that when it comes to accommodating players with the widest range of disabilities, from auditory, visual, and physical impairment, Microsoft -  the parent company of Xbox - is ahead of the rest on several fronts. </p><p>Since Microsoft debuted its controller and additional accessories, the company has gone one step further. Last year, they announced the <a href="https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/gaming/accessibility/guidelines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xbox Accessibility Guidelines</a>, which outlines better gameplay settings for players with disabilities.</p><p>The Game Reliability Engineering team and the Gaming Accessibility Team also now offer an "industry-first, platform-provided game accessibility testing program," according to <a href="https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/02/16/xbox-accessibility-guidelines-and-testing/">Xbox</a>, that encourages developers to have their games evaluated and tested before release. </p><p>Microsoft has made sure that both consoles and PCs have built-in settings accessible to all players, including a larger suite of accessibility accessories.   </p><div type="image" title="The Xbox Adaptive Controller." height="320" width="620" msid="85227567" hostid="261"></div><h2>How to enable accessibility features on an Xbox</h2><p>To adjust the accessibility features on your Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One, you'll first need to open your device's <strong>Settings</strong> menu.</p><p>If you don't know where to find it, use your controller to select <strong>My games &amp; apps</strong>, then scroll through the app menu.</p><p>You can also find it by pressing the Xbox button on your controller and navigating to <strong>Profile &amp; System</strong> panel. Once you find the Settings option, select it with your controller.</p><p>After you've opened Settings, use your controller to scroll down to the <strong>Ease of Access</strong> menu. From here, you can customize your accessibility settings.</p><p><strong>Quick tip:</strong> The available settings are largely identical between the Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, so these methods will work for any of the three systems.</p><h3>Narrator</h3><p>The Narrator will narrate on-screen and in-game text for you. How to enable Xbox accessibility features to get closed captions, a magnifier, and more

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="696843" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="eye-drops">Eye drops</keyword> are the most effective treatment to reduce eye allergy symptoms like redness, itchiness, or watery discharge. </li><li>These eye allergy symptoms, known medically as allergic conjunctivitis, are very common with seasonal <keyword id="25918" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="allergies">allergies</keyword>. </li><li>There are a few main types of allergy eye drops — read on to learn which is right for you. </li><li>This article <a href="https://www.insider.com/insider-medical-review-board" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was medically reviewed</a> by <a href="https://health.tamu.edu/experts/jason-mcknight.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jason R. McKnight</a>, MD, MS, a family medicine physician and clinical assistant professor at <a href="https://medicine.tamu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas A&amp;M College of Medicine</a>. </li></ul><p>Eye allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, affect up to<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s13223-020-0403-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 40% of Americans</a>. </p><p>They occur when an allergen like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites irritates the protective membrane that covers your eyes, called the conjunctiva. </p><p>The allergic reaction triggers the release of histamine, a molecule that activates the body's immune response causing symptoms like itching and redness.</p><h2>Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis</h2><p>Allergies are usually more common in the spring when allergens, like pollen, are rampant, says <a href="https://curistrelief.com/blogs/curist/dr-marc-goldstein-md" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marc Goldstein</a>, MD, allergy chief at Pennsylvania Hospital. </p><p>If you have eye allergies, Goldstein says, typical symptoms include:</p><ul><li>Itchiness in the white of the eye, the inner corner of the eyes, or along the eyelids</li><li>Redness in the white of the eye</li><li>Watery discharge from the eyes</li><li>Itchiness and swelling on the skin around the eyes</li></ul><p>In rarer cases, allergic conjunctivitis can cause:</p><ul><li>Blurriness</li><li>Discoloration of skin under eyes </li></ul><h2>Treat eye allergies with the right eye drops</h2><p>For the sudden onset of eye allergies, drops are best.</p><p>"Eye drops do not help with nasal symptoms, but are the quickest relief for eye symptoms like eye itching, tearing, redness of the white of the eyeball, and swelling in the tissues around the eye," Goldstein says. </p><p>Different types of allergy eye drops will either prevent or mitigate symptoms, depending on how they work. These drops are available in prescription strength and over the counter. </p><p>Here are three common types of allergy eye drops, and when they are most beneficial. </p><h3>Antihistamine eye drops</h3><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-are-antihistamines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antihistamine</a> eye drops work by counteracting the body's histamine response, which in turn reduces itching and other symptoms. These drops have an almost immediate effect, relieving eye irritation <a href="https://www.karger.com/Article/Abstract/496938" target="_blank" rel="noopener">within two minutes</a> of use. </p><p>"You will likely want to use an antihistamine If you're experiencing symptoms like itchy and watery eyes and need immediate relief," says Margaret Liu, MD, founder of the San Francisco Eye Institute at the<a href="https://www.pacificvisionfoundation.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Pacific Vision Eye Institute</a>. </p><p><a href="https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/pataday-eye-itch-relief/ID=300399614-product" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pataday</a> is one of the most common types of antihistamine eye drops, and it is widely available over the counter. </p><p>Antihistamine drops can be used multiple times a day, depending on the specific brand of drop you're using. Follow the directions on your eye drops. </p><h2>Anti-inflammatory eye drops </h2><p>Anti-inflammatory eye drops act on the nerve endings in and around the eye to reduce inflammation, including redness and swelling. They can also reduce itching. </p><p>There are two types of anti-inflammatory eye drops: </p><ol><li>Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), like<a href="https://www.rxlist.com/acular-side-effects-drug-center.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Acular</a> </li><li>Mast cell stabilizers, like Alomide, Alocril, or Alamast </li></ol><p>Non-steroidal eye drops are stronger than antihistamines, Liu says. However, since there is a potential for serious side effects including vision changes and<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s13223-020-0403-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> cataracts</a>, anti-inflammatory drops should "only be used for severe allergies and for a short period of time," under the direction of a doctor she says. Sometimes, these drops can burn or sting when they're put in, Liu says. </p><p>On the other hand, mast cell stabilizers prevent the release of histamine from mast cells during an allergic reaction. That means that when you encounter an allergen, you won't have an allergic response in the first place. Mast cell stabilizers are an effective preventative, Liu says, but they must be taken regularly throughout allergy season, 2-6 times per day depending on the drops. </p><p>"They are most effective for patients with known allergens who are anticipating exposure," she says. "These are less effective in treating symptoms that are present, however they can help prevent future symptoms."</p><p>It can take a few days of regularly applying these drops before you begin to see a difference in symptoms, Goldstein says.</p><h3>Combination eye drops </h3><p>Combination eye drops that contain both antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers have become a<a href="https://www.healio.com/optometry/cornea-external-disease/news/print/primary-care-optometry-news/%7Bb8615dd8-70fc-4058-b979-bf9c75f56815%7D/antihistaminemast-cell-stabilizers-often-first-choice-for-allergy" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> front-line treatment</a> for eye allergies because they prevent symptoms and treat symptoms that are already present. </p><p>"Combination drops… help treat various targets in the pathway leading to symptoms triggered by allergens and can be more effective than treating one target alone," Liu says. </p><p>When using combination drops, be sure that the drops do not contain a decongestant like <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/treatments/red-eye-drops-safe-if-used-correctly" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tetrahydrozoline</a>. <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-a-decongestant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Decongestant</a> eye drops will reduce redness in the eye, but if used regularly they can<a href="https://www.webmd.com/allergies/qa/what-are-the-risks-of-decongestant-eye-drops-for-eye-allergies" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> increase redness</a> in the long-run, Goldstein says. You should not use these for more than <a href="https://www.aao.org/eye-health/treatments/redness-relieving-eye-drops" target="_blank" rel="noopener">72 hours</a> at a time. </p><h3>Other medications</h3><p>Other allergy medications — like oral antihistamines and steroid <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-use-nasal-spray" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nasal sprays</a> — can reduce allergy symptoms overall, including eye allergy symptoms, but they must be taken consistently. </p><h3><strong>When to see a doctor</strong></h3><p>Antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers are generally safe to use, Liu says. Now, Banerjee is working with the technology giant to integrate the printer-Braigo 2.0-with Windows to make it easily accessible to the visually-impaired. The company plans to launch the printer commercially in November.<br />
<br /> The eighth-grade student in Santa Clara, California showcased his <keyword id="2853160" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="braigo">Braigo</keyword> 2.0 at a tech fair organised by the company here.<br />

"Our relationship with Microsoft will help Braigo achieve a seamless experience for a visually-impaired person who wants to use a computer at home or at the office to print documents for offline reading," Banerjee said in Microsoft blog post.<br />

He told news agency PTI that it was an amazing experience while participating in the fair and working with Microsoft. “I am looking at ways to integrate the Windows technology with the printer as I prepare to launch it commercially by November this year," he told PTI.<br />

Banerjee is targeting a price point of 500 dollars or less for the printer to ensure its affordability in organisations working for the visually-impaired in developing and least developed nations.<br />

"Also, think about the banks, the government institutions or even the libraries where Windows-based computers are widely used. They will all benefit from having a Braigo to provide accessibility services to their visually-impaired customers," Banerjee told the news agency.<br />

The young student is being flooded with reviews and valuable support from experts for Braigo that he had developed using Lego Mindstorms EV3, a robotics kit.<br />

The idea of developing such a printer came to him when he was working on a science fair project last year. He worked on the printer for almost one month and also did not lose focus from studies.<br />

He said he was shocked to learn that braille printers cost over 2,000 dollars.<br />

<p>A touchscreen just doesn't have enough tactile clues for a blind person to navigate and voice commands are infuriatingly awful. They mishear the voice, are drowned out by background noise, and otherwise cumbersome to use.</p>
<p>Enter serial Israeli startup founder Boaz Zilberman and <a href="http://www.project-ray.com/">Project Ray</a>. Zilberman has created a Android operating system designed for the blind. The first unlocked phones were recently released for the Israeli and European markets, and were built by Huawei. In June, they'll be arriving in the U.S. via an as yet-unnamed carrier, available either unlocked or as part of a contract.</p>
<p>The phones were specially designed around a touch system that every blind person, knows, the 12-key number pad. Every screen has the apps and commands arranged in a square. Simply move the finger and the phone reads the command. Lift the finger off and it executes the command. Users scan a bill and the phone tells them if its a $5 bill or a $100.</p>
<p>Zilberman is the founder of Fring, a Facetime-like app with 100 million users worldwide that lets you chat or make video calls. It was one of the first apps of this kind and is so easy-to-use it is popular with the blind and vision impaired.</p>
<p>"I'm known in Israel as an entrepreneur in mobile. People from the blind community approached me with a few questions and it triggered up a complete product," he says.</p>
<p>The worldwide market of blind people is small, he says, so the project is more of a labor of love right now. But eventually, he'll expand this version of Android to tablets and add features that make it appropriate for the vision-impaired, people who need large-screen readers and other visual cues. Beyond that, the tech also has implications in other ways, like as an interface while driving.</p>

This Startup Has Built A New Kind Of Smartphone For The Blind

He's publishing his designs for free, too, and sharing information via Microsoft's online <a href="https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=6AE21945BF49227A!332&amp;ithint=onenote%2c&amp;app=OneNote&amp;authkey=!AA4WgUPZVClMjec">note taking app, OneNote.</a></p><p><strong>3.</strong> <strong>Preserving ancient customs and language in Columbia</strong>.</p><p>For the past few years, the the Colombian government has been working with the <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2013/06/28/technology-helps-preserve-biodiversity-and-traditional-cultures.aspx">Arhuacos</a> people to store cultural information in a cloud-based Microsoft Dynamics CRM system.</p><p>Nadella met with "leaders of the Arhuacos, an indigenous community living deep in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Mountains. They're an incredible example of how technology can protect sacred cultures while still providing a window for understanding with the rest of the world," he writes. </p><p><strong>4. <p>But while the physical <keyword id="5050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="books">books</keyword> were destroyed, Reetz's loss wasn't 100%. He had digitally scanned most of them, and as long as he had redundant backups in ones and zeroes, he'd never actually "lose" his books.</p>
<p><a href="http://diybookscanner.org/">Reetz is the brain behind DIYBookScanner</a>, an open-source piece of hardware that's been redesigned and reinvented with help from a large internet community. The scanner digitally captures books to preserve them and put them on whatever device you like. It can be built out of materials that you likely already have around the house, or you can order <a href="http://diybookscanner.myshopify.com/">a kit from his site for $475</a>. The next most comparable device you can buy would be <a href="http://kmbs.konicaminolta.us/wps/portal/web/home/products/office-systems/scanners/ps7000">significantly more expensive</a>.</p>
<p>We love it when an expensive or inaccessible technology is made instantly easy or affordable. But because the DIYBookScanner deals directly with aspects of intellectual property, preservation of knowledge, and the circumvention of the "broken medium" of physical books, it begs a number of questions.</p>
<p>Reetz was kind enough to answer some of them for us.</p>
<p><strong>BUSINESS INSIDER: </strong>Any cool stories about how people are using the scanner?</p>
<p><strong>DANIEL REETZ: </strong>The short list: it's been used to digitize fire and tsunami-damaged holy books in Indonesia; to digitize engineering texts for a student with eye troubles; to digitize French Creole medical records in Haiti; to digitize the ships logs of Minnesota, a landlocked state; to digitize fileslips, the linguistic "recipe cards" that become dictionaries; as the basis of a book on getting books into the OLPC computer; used to digitize over 36,000 pages of yearbooks; used to digitize collections of QSL cards. It even showed up as a major plot element in Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore!</p>
<p>Fundamentally, this project has really become about all the niche book scanning stuff that everyone else ignored.</p>
<p><strong>BI: </strong>Is it fair to say that ultimately the scanner is about preserving knowledge?<br /><br /><strong>DR: </strong>Yes, and about people helping themselves. The most important thing to note here is, despite the ENORMOUS focus on digital books, their marketing, scanning, distribution, reading, and sale, there has been nearly ZERO focus on all the books people already own. Whole classes of books and book-related desires have been wholly ignored. That's where I – and my designs and league of interesting people – come in. We help people get their books into a format they can use, using mostly stuff they already have. They might not always be archival-quality scans, but they are a whole lot better than being ignored.</p>
<p><strong>BI: </strong>What's most frustrating about current intellectual property law?</p>
<p><strong>DR: </strong>The fundamental problem with intellectual property law is that it was formed in a totally different technological era. It wasn't designed for our current age of computation and copying. When these legal concepts came into being, it was hard to make a copy. You needed, for example, a printing press. Today we copy thousands of times a second with our electronic devices. The law can't handle the present. And that's where the trouble begins.</p>
<p>Some people are trying to change the law, but others are exploiting it to make everyone miserable and to make everyone tithe. I'm not the first person to say this, and I won't be the last. It's a bad situation.</p>
<p><strong>BI: </strong>You've previously called physical books a "broken medium." Care to elaborate?</p>
<p><strong>DR: </strong>It's pretty straightforward - it's tough to read a physical book on my phone, really hard to update one with new information, really hard to cross-reference them with other texts, it's impossible for blind people to access most of them, many of them continuously self destruct because of the paper they are printed on, some are in constant danger because of the ideas contained in their pages, I can't share them without depriving myself of access, and backing them up is a lot of work.</p>
<p>Fundamentally, I'd like to see a new form of reading that takes the best from physical books and digital books. For example, I'd like a textbook that gets incremental updates instead of having to be re-purchased with each new edition. This already existed many years ago in the form of a binder-like encyclopedia that was updated as the world's knowledge increased. Or I'd like an ebook that doesn't have to be turned off for takeoff and landing, and that I can easily mark up with a pen. All the technology to do this already exists. It's just scattered.</p>
<p><strong>BI: </strong>What's the value in a digital file over a physical book?</p>
<p><strong>DR: </strong>Accessibility, primarily, in the broadest sense. I can get it, use it, and share it anywhere. Annotation – the markup can be (but isn't yet) extraordinarily powerful. Also search – being able to search my entire bookshelf for just the passages or information I want would be wonderful. Double-edged sword, though – scanning through books looking for specific things often leads to new insights and unexpected connections.</p>
<p><strong>BI: </strong>What's the value in a digital file over cloud access through Amazon?</p>
<p><strong>DR: </strong>If you own the file, you control it. That's the fundamental thing. You can copy it, back it up,  delete it, or even scramble up the bits into interesting digital art, whatever!</p>
<p>If it's on someone else's server, and you can only get at it through an app, you don't own it or access to it. It's the worst of the rental market, because someday your landlord is gonna die. Or get tired of renting to you. Or the device you're reading on is going to become obsolete and unsupported. This already happened on some of the early ebook reader platforms.</p>
<p><strong>BI: </strong>What's the future of books, physical and otherwise?</p>
<p><strong>DR: </strong>If you ask me, physical books are going to follow a path similar to vinyl. They always have and always will contain information we care about and want access to. And their medium has special, wonderful properties that make them lovable and not easily discarded, unlike, say, 8-track. So they'll be around for a long while, but increasingly their maintenance will become more and more costly.</p>
<p>In the meantime, the market will move to ever cheaper and more ephemeral forms of distribution, like, well, it already has. On a personal scale, you'll buy less and less bits and more and more bytes. You'll own less, but have more. At some point, real books, like letterpress, vinyl, and other mediums with weighty history and wonderful physical manifestations, well, they'll be niche. There will be artisanal binders in Brooklyn binding up books the old way with rabbit glue, and there will be a variety of companies that survive on a technicality  like some documents being legally required to be printed in book form, or some people (such as the visually impaired) needing them in a particular physical form.</p>
<p>But as time goes on, NEW real books will increasingly become a novelty, an add-on to a digital purchase process. Their position as a source of vetted, edited, clarified and concentrated quality information and exposition is unlikely to change, given the extreme brevity of online communication, but the flow of information and discussion will not be so gravitationally whorled around them.</p>
<p>Libraries will evolve in interesting ways. Some will become museums and archives. Some will become information hubs – even more than they are now. Some will make disastrous decisions like putting the whole place on iPads and iTunes only to get hosed with each new version. At least there's a progressive idea in that.</p>
<p>But this is not a lamentation. I look forward to greater access and more sensible distribution, as well as greater volumes of books for people who can only consume them in particular ways. I also look forward to the end of obscurity. THAT is what I am really hoping to help bring out of all this. No longer will those rare, one-off books rot until someone unknowingly chucks them. They'll be out there, somewhere, ready for discovery. Ready for reading.</p>
