While back to back talks and discussions have made people inquisitive in both the countries, most Chinese dailies <keyword id="258434" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="This-Morning">this morning</keyword> have put Modi’s outing in their country on top priority. 
 Today seems to be more eventful than yesterday. After his grand reception at the Great Hall of People in the capital city of <keyword id="1333" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Beijing">Beijing</keyword>, Chinese <keyword id="4744" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="premier">Premier</keyword> <keyword id="191503" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Li-Keqiang">Li Keqiang</keyword> settled for formal talks with Modi. The topics of discussion included the controversial border issue as well as Chinese <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> in India. 
 
This is the second round of bi-lateral talks Modi is holding with the Chinese leadership during his on-going three-day China trip. 
 Yesterday, he talked over five hours with Chinese <keyword id="2540" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="President">President</keyword> <keyword id="191809" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xi-Jinping">Xi Jinping</keyword> during which all the contentious issues including the border issue were discussed. Today's talks were the extension of yesterday's Modi-Xi talks. 
 
As per a news report in The Economic Times, Modi is eyeing deals worth $23.5 billion to be signed as collaboration with Chinese companies. These include a $2.5-billion financing for <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/bharti-airtel-ltd/stocks/companyid-2718.cms" target="_blank">Bharti Airtel</a> from Chinese lenders, a $3.5-billion venture by the <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Adani-Group" target="_blank">Adani Group</a> as well as big-ticket investments by <keyword id="45609" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JSW-Steel">JSW Steel</keyword>, GMR and Welspun. With the exception of Bharti, the other companies are likely to sign joint venture agreements with Chinese partners. 
 
In a joint statement with China's Premier Li Keqiang, Modi said, "We are pleased with the progress on the commitments from the Summit last September. This includes cooperation in the Railways, where we have identified specific projects, and the two Chinese industrial parks in Gujarat and Maharashtra." 
 
According to a news report in The Economic Times, China's Premier Li Keqiang said that China and India need to strengthen mutual political trust so that together they can build a fairer and more reasonable international order. 
 
India and China have signed twenty-four key agreements in a wide range of sectors. PM Modi is on a three-day visit to China as the two world's two largest countries by population work to boost economic ties.

 Modi’s bucket list for the last day tomorrow includes meeting a number of CEOs of top Chinese companies and open the first Gandhian studies centre at <keyword id="132970" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fudan-University">Fudan university</keyword> and address Indian community in <keyword id="6368000" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shanghai">Shanghai</keyword> after which he will leave for <keyword id="3663" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mongolia">Mongolia</keyword>.

Modi’s Day in China today

After a fruitful day in Xi’an city, Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> arrived in Beijing on Friday, the second day of his three-day China visit. 
 He was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Great Hall of People and met his Chinese counterpart <keyword id="191503" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Li-Keqiang">Li Keqiang</keyword>, from where they both proceeded for delegation-level talks and signing of agreements. 
 
India and China exchanged 20 agreements, including railways, education exchange programme, space cooperation, ocean sciences, etc. Deals worth $23 billion are expected to be signed between both the nations during Modi’s visit out of which $10 billion deals were signed today. 
 
While meeting Li, Modi stressed that China needed to reconsider its approach on some issues like border and its support to India’s rival Pakistan. 
 
However, he said that such issues should not hold both the countries back in realising full potential of the partnership. 
 
“We agreed that as we move ahead, we should be sensitive to each other's interests; strengthen mutual trust and confidence; continue to manage our difference with maturity; and, seek solutions to outstanding issues,” he said while making a statement. 
 
Having said that, both the South-Asian giants also sought to work together and help each other to emerge as powerful world economies. 
 
Later on, he is scheduled to address the first Forum of Leaders of the Regions of India and Beijing, which will be attended by Chief Ministers of Gujarat and Maharashtra. 
 Modi, who arrived in China on Thursday, met Chinese President <keyword id="191809" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Xi-Jinping">Xi Jinping</keyword> in the latter’s hometown, Xi’an, and worked out to enhance ties, despite years of mistrust. 
 
Both the nations face an array of issues, including border dispute and China’s backing to Pakistan. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi urged Modi to work together to promote the international order in a fair direction. 
 
During his stay in Xi’an, Modi also visited Daxingshan Temple, Terracotta Army museum and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. 
 
Modi is on a three-nation tour in which he will also visit Mongolia and South Korea and the visits will end on May 19.

Modi says this is the year of India and China

All of India has been intently listening to PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> over the past one year in the country, but now it is China’s turn. 
 
Modi, who is on a three-day visit to China, is leaving no possible opportunity to connect with the bureaucrats as well as nationals of China. And the speech that he gave today at the <keyword id="167708" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tsinghua-University">Tsinghua University</keyword> just shows how he is leaving no stone unturned to encourage co-operation, trade and economy between India and China. 
 
While addressing the students of Tsinghua University on the second day of his three-day China visit, where he was accompanied by Foreign Minister Wang Yi and University President Qiu Yong, he said, “...a resurgent Asia was seeking a bigger voice in global affairs, emphasising that India and China were mulling a greater role in the world, be it in United Nations Security Council or the new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.” 
 
PM Modi’s decision to address the Chinese youth was a conscious one because he believes the ‘youth’ is the future of both the economies. 
 
To immediately connect with the audience, he chose to begin his speech in Mandarin and then didn’t stop until he conveyed a stronger message stating that 21st century would be the Asian century. He said, “The prospects of the 21st century becoming the Asian century will depend in large measure on what India and China achieve individually and what we do together. The rising fortunes of 2.5 billion pairs of joined hands will be of the greatest consequence for our region and the humanity.” 
 
The Indian premier went on to project India as a land of huge opportunities, saying the country had everything on offer, right from skills to manpower. 
 
“The aspirations of 800 million people in India, who are below the age of 35 years, in energy and skills would push India’s economic transformation to a new level,” said Modi. 
 
In a bid to engage better with China, Modi, in his signature style, connected proverbs of both the nations—and said that like China, India also believed in “wealth that increases by giving, wealth is knowledge and is supreme of all possessions.” 
 
He also picked up pieces from the history to emphasise on the stronger ties India and China have shared in the earlier centuries. 
 
His address would have sounded incomplete, had the man not pitched his ‘Make in India’ for once, and he did mention it without any inhibitions—despite knowing that China is itself the proverbial production hub of the world for almost a decade now. 
 
“During President Xi's visit last September, we set for ourselves a new level of ambition for our cooperation. Partnership in modernizing Indian railways, two Chinese industrial parks in India, commitments of 20 billion dollars in investments into India over the next five years partnership in our Make in India Mission: This is the shape of our future,” he expressed. 
 
Modi also spoke about the contentious border issue and took a tough stand on it while emphasising on the fact that these disagreement should not hamper relationships. 
 
“It is because neither side knows where the Line of Actual Control is in these areas. That is why I have proposed resuming the process of clarifying it. We can do this without prejudice to our position on the boundary question. We should think of creative solutions to issues that have become irritants - from visa policies to trans-border rivers,” he said.

Commenting on the discussion, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The Chinese leader congratulated Modi on his victory in the recent general elections and conveyed the Chinese government’s desire to establish robust partnership with the new government of India for further development of relations between the two nations.” 
 
Modi noted that China “was always a priority” in India’s foreign policy and welcomed “a greater economic engagement” between the two countries. “He emphasised on his government’s resolve to utilise the full potential of our strategic and co-operative partnership with China and his keenness to work closely with the Chinese leadership to deal with any outstanding issue in bilateral relations by proceeding from the strategic perspective of our developmental goals and long-term benefits to our people,” the ministry said.

Chinese PM Calls Up Modi, Offers ‘Robust
Partnership’

Chinese Premier <keyword id="191503" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Li-Keqiang">Li Keqiang</keyword> has said that <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> views <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> as a ‘natural co-operative partner’ and it is looking forward to work with the recently formed Narendra Modi-led government. 
 
“China and India are important neighbours to each other and the top two emerging markets in the world. China-India relations have moved beyond the bilateral scope and taken on global and strategic significance,” he added. 
 
"By working together for peaceful, co-operative and common development, China and India will not only bring benefits to their own people, but will also contribute to peace, stability and prosperity of Asia and beyond. China stands ready to work with India to bring China-India strategic co-operative partnership for peace and prosperity to a new level." 
 
According to Li, the two countries have formed a strategic co-operative partnership and found a way to ‘properly handle disagreements.’ 
 
"China has all along regarded India as a natural co-operative partner whose development brings opportunities to China, and has viewed China-India relations as one of its diplomatic priorities," said Li. 
 
"Both China and India are now facing the historical mission of deepening reform, growing the economy and improving people's livelihood. We also share the goal of seeking domestic development and a peaceful external environment," he said. 
 
Modi had made four visits to China as the chief minister of Gujarat. Most of China's $900 million investments in India have been in Gujarat.

Chinese PM Wishes Modi, Calls India

Xi will attend the second informal meeting with Modi at Mamallapuram near Chennai from October 11 to 12 and pay a state visit to Nepal on October 13, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying announced on Wednesday. This is the 2nd informal summit between Modi and Xi. The first one was held last year at the Chinese city of Wuhan, which enabled the two countries to normalise the relations on all fronts after the 73-day standoff between the two militaries at Doklam in 2017. The standoff took place over the Chinese military's plan to build a road close to the narrow Siliguri corridor also known as Chicken Neck corridor connecting the North-Eastern states. The standoff ended with both sides withdrawing from the standoff site after the Chinese military called off its road building plans. The Wednesday's announcement about Xi's visit to India by <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, coincides with the ongoing visit of Pakistan Prime Minister <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> and its Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. Khan who arrived on Tuesday held talks with Premier Li Keqiang and expected to meet Xi on Wednesday. Khan's visit is taking place at a time when tensions have spiked between Pakistan and India after New Delhi ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5. Ahead of Xi's visit, China on Tuesday however, said the Kashmir issue should be resolved between New Delhi and Islamabad, significantly omitting its recent references to the UN and UN Security Council resolutions. Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang's comments marked a significant shift on what China has been saying on Kashmir in recent weeks in the aftermath of India's move to revoke <keyword id="405091" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Article-370">Article 370</keyword> of the Constitution removing the special status to Kashmir.

Chinese Premiere Xi Jinping to visit India from October 11-12

NEW DELHI: In its first official engagement with India after the change of guard here, <keyword id="1333" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Beijing">Beijing</keyword>’s statecraft again came to the fore as visiting foreign minister Wang Yi used nothing short of a panegyric to PM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to reach out to the new government. 
 Wang is in India as a special envoy of President Xi Jinping. In his first meeting with his Indian counterpart <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword>, which lasted for three hours, Wang showered encomiums on the NDA government led by Modi, even saying it had injected a “new vitality into an ancient civilization”. Modi, Wang said, was an old friend of China. 
 
Outlining ancient links between the two countries, Modi had earlier regaled Chinese Premier Li Keqiang with a reference to the travels of Hiuen Tsang in their telephonic conversation, saying the Chinese scholar had even visited his village Vadnagar during his stay in India in the 7th century. Li was the first foreign leader to call Modi after he assumed office.

 Without getting into the specifics, Indian officials said “all perennials'' of China-Indian relations were discussed in a “frank manner” during the meeting. This included the need for resolving the contentious border issue and Beijing’s insistence on giving residents of J&amp;K and <keyword id="46408" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword> stapled Chinese visas, it is learned. 
 Wang, who promised support for India’s <keyword id="352701" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Economic-Development">economic development</keyword>, insisted that the dreams of both China and India have commonalities and that Beijing was ready to engage with the new government. Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin described the talks as “cordial, useful, substantive and productive”. 
 
“Even while there was a determination to add new content and substance to the relationship, there was an understanding that respect for the sensitivities and aspirations of each other was essential for expansion of bilateral relations,'' said the spokesperson, as he summed up the mood by referring to the Chinese proverb that a 1000-mile journey begins with a single step. “That step has been taken with this engagement,'' he added.

The two sides also discussed economic issues in detail, including specific projects and the rising trade deficit between the two countries. Swaraj spoke about the need for more Chinese investments into India and also the possibility of setting up industrial parks in India. Wang responded by saying that China will support expansion of economic cooperation with India. 
 Wang will call on PM Modi, and also President <keyword id="6359124" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pranab-Mukherjee">Pranab Mukherjee</keyword>, on Monday. In his interaction with Swaraj, joint secretary (East Asia) Gautam Bambawale said, Wang thanked India for the position it had taken on recent incidents of terrorism in China. Possible counter-terrorism cooperation was also discussed even though there is already a joint working group to address the issue. 
 
The Wang visit will also pave the way for a slew of engagements between the two countries in the next six months. While Xi is expected to visit India after September, there are at least five other meetings likely to take place between the two countries at the levels of President, PM, vice-president and foreign minister. 
 
Sushma greets Wang in Mandarin 
 
Foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who emphasized on the need for more Chinese investment into India before her counterpart Wang Yi, lent her own special touch to the meeting when she started her conversation with him in Mandarin. Sources said the gesture almost took Wang by surprise as he wasn't expecting it. He warmly responded in China's official language and with a smile. Swaraj greeted him by saying “reliye huanying nin” which translated into English means “I welcome you warmly''. She ended with a “xie xie” which means thank you.

Before leaving New Delhi earlier today, Modi said, "ASEAN is at the core of our Act East Policy and at the centre of our dream of an Asian century, characterised by cooperation and integration." 
 He also said that the <keyword id="455958" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="East-Asia-Summit">East Asia Summit</keyword> can shape the future on not only this region, but also of the world. "At the East Asia Summit, I look forward to discussing with ASEAN and seven global leaders how we can strengthen regional institutions, international norms and regional cooperation in pursuit of peace, stability and prosperity," the PM said in a statement. 
 
Modi will attend the 12th ASEAN-India Summit and the 9th East Asian Summit on November 12 and 13, respectively. In Australia, he will attend the G-20 Summit on November 15-16. 
 
On the sidelines of the G-20 Summit, the Prime Minister will also meet a number of world leaders, including Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy Brey.

"I suggested that China should take a strategic and long-term view of our relations."The Times notes that India's long-running border dispute with China and the heavy trade imbalance in China's favor continue to undermine Modi's efforts to invigorate the Indian economy and improve relations with one of its "most important strategic" partners, according to the Times.Indeed, Modi's remarks deviated from the often tepid language most Asian leaders stick to when dealing publicly with Beijing, the Times reported, a reflection of Modi's determination to "to set a new direction between the two largest Asian countries" once and for all."For him to say we hope the Chinese will reconsider their approach - it's very politely put, and he added that he saw sensitivity to India's concerns," said Siddharth Varadarajan, editor of The Wire, an online Indian news site, told the Times.
