The pre-production has already begun on a third installment of the wildly popular Disney+ series.<br /><br />Sources close to the production have confirmed that creator <keyword id="149427" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jon-Favreau">Jon Favreau</keyword> has been "writing season three for a while". The art department, led by Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang, has been creating concepts for the third part for the "past few weeks".<br /><br />Last December, Favreau confirmed the renewal of the show through a Twitter post. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Lee Jung-jae told Business Insider that "Squid Game" season two was coming in December. </li><li>Lee stars in the South Korean Netflix drama as Seong Gi-hun. </li></ul><p>The highly anticipated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emmys-nominees-winners-list-2022-7">season two of "Squid Game"</a> is on the horizon.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/squid-game-actor-open-to-starring-overseas-productions-no-offers-2021-10">Lee Jung-jae</a>, who plays Seong Gi-hun in the South Korean Netflix drama, gave Business Insider an update on the series on the Disney Upfronts red carpet on Tuesday, where he was promoting his upcoming <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-wars-disney-plus-shows-movies">Star Wars series "The Acolyte."</a></p><p>When BI asked if Lee could tease anything about the upcoming second season, the actor kept the major details close to his chest.</p><p>"It will be released in December," Lee told BI through an interpreter.</p><p>Representatives for Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p><p>Netflix has not yet officially released a premiere date for season two, though co-CEO Ted Sarandos said during a Netflix earnings call in April that it would be released in the back half of 2024, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/squid-game-night-agent-set-for-second-half-of-2024-on-netflix-1235877119/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.</p><p>Netflix released the first season of "Squid Game" in September 2021. The show, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, follows a contest in which 456 players compete for a 45.6 billion won (approximately $3.3 millino) prize through a series of children's games. However, a loss doesn't just mean missing out on the money — it means instant death.</p><p>The series was a massive hit for Netflix, and according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/most-popular/tv-non-english">its own data</a>, is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-squid-game-on-pace-to-be-biggest-hit-show-2021-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">platform's most-viewed show</a> to date in terms of hours viewed. The show also got <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sag-awards-squid-game-first-foreign-language-series-2022-1">plenty of critical love</a>: It was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emmys-nominees-winners-list-2022-7">nominated for 14 Emmys in 2022</a> and won six of them, including an outstanding directing award for Hwang. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-we-know-so-far-about-squid-game-season-2-2022-6">Netflix renewed the show</a> for a second season with Lee attached in June 2022, and has also launched a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/squid-game-challenge-winner-mai-whelan-family-secret-2024-3">reality competition spinoff series</a>.</p><p>Before "Squid Game" season two, you'll be able to see Lee on the small screen in "The Acolyte." The series, created by Leslye Headland, takes place outside the primary Skywalker Saga continuity. And though Lee has experience with sword-wielding, doing a "Star Wars" show presented a different challenge: lightsaber dueling.</p><p>"It was actually a lot more difficult than any kind of sword work that I've done previously, and I was actually very nervous for it," Lee said.</p><p>"The Acolyte" premieres June 4 on Disney+.</p>

Musk <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1804191833553277113?s=46">wrote</a> Friday on his social-media platform, X, in response to a meme that called Kennedy a "<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/BillyM2k/status/1804176827621216384">franchise killer</a>."</p><p>The Academy Award-winning film producer was <a target="_blank" href="https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/disney-to-acquire-lucasfilm-ltd/">appointed president of Lucasfilm</a> after the company was acquired by Disney in 2012. But Kennedy's leadership of Lucasfilm has drawn a mixed reception from "Star Wars" fans.</p><p>While Kennedy was initially able to land box-office hits like 2015's "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-wars-the-force-awakens-review-2015-12">Star Wars: The Force Awakens</a>" and 2016's "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-is-it-good-2016-12">Rogue One</a>," Lucasfilm's subsequent entries into the sci-fi franchise have been lacking.</p><p>In 2018, "Star Wars" saw a big box-office bomb in "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-a-star-wars-story-has-moments-of-exciting-thrills-but-major-flaws-2018-5">Solo: A Star Wars Story</a>," <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2019/04/box-office-bombs-2018-solo-a-star-wars-story-mortal-engines-wrinkle-in-time-robin-hood-nutcracker-1202591271/">Deadline</a> reported.</p><p>The franchise's foray into streaming has also yielded mixed results, with shows like "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-boba-fett-series-not-as-popular-as-mandalorian-2022-1">The Book of Boba Fett</a>" doing poorly with audiences, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_book_of_boba_fett/s01">Rotten Tomatoes</a>.</p><p>And it seems that Kennedy's focus on progressive themes and female protagonists in "Star Wars" projects has been a huge bugbear for Musk.</p><p>"Kathleen Kennedy is super bigoted against men," he <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1804530990800310362?s=46">wrote</a> in a subsequent X post on Saturday, referring to an interview that Kennedy gave to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/29/arts/television/leslye-headland-the-acolyte.html">The New York Times</a> last month.</p><p>In the interview, Kennedy defended Leslye Headland, the director and writer of the latest "Star Wars" television series, "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-wars-the-acolyte-cast-actors-seen-before-2024-5">The Acolyte</a>," after fans slammed Headland and called her "woke."</p><p>"Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it's terrifying," Kennedy told the Times.</p><p>"I think a lot of the women who step into 'Star Wars' struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal," she added.</p><p>To be sure, Kathleen's stewardship of "Star Wars" isn't the only reason behind the franchise's perceived decline among fans.</p><p>In 2019, Disney chief <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-ceo-bob-iger-net-worth-life-career-family">Bob Iger</a> said the studio might have released too many Star Wars projects after acquiring Lucasfilm. Iger stepped down as CEO in 2020 before <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bob-iger-ceo-disney-return-insiders-anxious-losing-faith-2023-11">returning to the job</a> in 2022.</p><p>"I just think that we might've put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast," Iger told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/22/style/disney-bob-iger-book.html">The New York Times</a> in a report published in September 2019.</p><p>This criticism of Kennedy isn't the first time Musk has expressed his displeasure at what he brands <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woke-capitalism-reversal-google-unilever-bud-light-esg-dei-2024-5">"woke" ideology</a> and people who champion <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaire-mark-cuban-pushes-back-elon-musk-again-dei-2024-1">diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts</a>.</p><p>"DEI is just another word for racism. Shame on anyone who uses it," Musk <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1742653436393406618">said</a> in an X post in January.</p><p>Kennedy also wasn't the first executive to draw Musk's ire regarding progressive corporate initiatives. He'll write the script with the "1917" cowriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns.</p><p>Lucasfilm did not announce a release date for the movie yet, but Disney had a slot in December 2022 reserved for a "Star Wars" movie that was to be written and produced by the "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The duo <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-creators-reportedly-exited-star-wars-toxic-fandom-2019-10">exited the project in October</a>, though, and Disney has yet to announce any updates. </p><p>Most recently, Waititi directed the season one finale of Disney Plus' "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian" and won an Oscar in February for best adapted screenplay for "Jojo Rabbit," which he also directed. He's also set to direct "Thor: Love and Thunder," which is slated for release in February, 2022. </p><p>There are other "Star Wars" film projects in development. "The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson is developing a new trilogy, though there have been few updates about the project. He told <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/rian-johnson-star-wars-knives-out-sequel-1203464981/">Variety</a> in January that he's "still talking to Lucasfilm." <ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="13473956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russian-doll" source="Orion">Russian Doll</keyword>" star <keyword id="13680316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="charlie-barnett" source="Orion">Charlie Barnett</keyword> said that his "favorite moment" on set was when they had a rave.</li><li>Barnett told Insider that the wacky scene gave him "an excuse to be whatever I wanted to be."</li></ul><p>The new season of "Russian Doll" expands from its intimate New York setting to vast locations that range from East Germany in the 1960s to a psychedelic rave in Bulgaria.</p><p>The Netflix hit series is focused on time travel, rather than time loops, in its second season as both Nadia (<keyword id="13658697" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="natasha-lyonne" source="Orion">Natasha Lyonne</keyword>) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) delve into their family histories four years after they helped each other escape death.</p><p>After accidentally stumbling into 1982, and into the body of her mother Lenora (Chloë Sevigny), Nadia discovers her family's long-lost fortune and does all she can to try and change the past and her present.</p><p>Meanwhile, Alan, who is in 1962 East Berlin in the body of her grandmother Agnes (Carolyn Michelle Smith), just wants to enjoy the ride.</p><p>Among the soul-searching scenes, there are moments that are purely bizarre and inexplainable such as the aforementioned rave scene, which occurs in episode four.</p><p>After taking DMT, a hallucinogenic tryptamine drug, Nadia is thrust into a montage where she experiences multiple deaths and transforms into her younger self, only to return to the present day again. She also makes out with Alan in a strobe-light illuminated bunker set to a remix of "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.</p><p>Barnett told Insider that this was one of his favorite scenes because he could use "Nadia's crazy drug-filled world" as an "excuse" to do anything. The "Russian Doll" star also shared why he was "surprised" to return for season two and his initial annoyance with his character.</p><h2>Charlie Barnett told Insider that he was pissed at Alan for risking his grandmother's life in season 2</h2><div type="image" title="Russian Doll" height="1800" width="2400" msid="91009594" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>When it comes to shows like "Russian Doll," there are moments that can be confusing, such as the rules of time travel. How did you react when you got the script for season 2 and saw where the characters were going next?</strong></p><p>After last season, I will admit, upfront I didn't know if I had a place. I didn't know if Alan's storyline was gone. I wasn't sure what Natasha and [co-creators] Leslye [Headland] and <a href="https://www.insider.com/amy-poehler-lucille-ball-directing-lucy-and-desi-2022-3">Amy [Poehler]</a> were thinking in the next season. So I kind of went into it thinking that I wasn't invited. So coming into the second season, I was just surprised to be a part of it initially.</p><p>And the time jumping, Natasha and Leslye and Amy have a great way of taking those tropes and flipping them. They always add some sort of surprising element so that it's not what you've always imagined. And that's what really, really excited me. I didn't see all of them at first. I will admit, reading through that script they're hidden. They're kind of like Easter eggs. </p><p>You can watch it a million times, you know, and there's something new that will pop out. My partner was like explaining something at the end of last season that I was like, "Holy shit." I did not even see that until four years later and I'm the one in it. And he's like, "I thought that's what you were doing," but that's the beauty of art.</p><div type="image" title="Russian Doll" height="1800" width="2400" msid="91009595" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>"Russian Doll" season two is filled with more bizarre moments than the first. For example, at the beginning of episode six, Nadia literally gives birth to herself while in her mother's body. How did you react to those stranger moments?</strong></p><p>I'll tell you my favorite one: This is pretty shameful but my favorite one is Nadia's tripping scene when they're in Budapest and she falls through the bed. We filmed that in a World War II bunker 90 feet underground and we had a rave down there. It was fucking awesome. It was also one of those days that we didn't have to do any serious scenes so I was like, "Oh, I'm gonna get crazy in this."</p><p>It's also not really attached to Alan. Everybody keeps thinking, "Did y'all have an orgy at one point in this show?" And it's like well, yes. I guess. But side note, it's not [the real] world. It's Nadia's crazy drug-filled world...so I had a little bit of an excuse to be whatever I wanted to be in that place.</p><p><strong>When your character travels back in time to 1962, Alan is put in the body of his grandmother, Agnes, who is a Ghanaian woman studying in East Berlin on a scholarship. During the season, we see Alan fall for his grandmother's lover Lenny (Sandor Funtek), a German man who wants to escape to West Berlin to be with his family. What was the preparation for that role like? Did you do a lot of research?</strong></p><p>Of course. I started really from a group that came from Congo [to East Berlin]. It was nine men and one woman and I was always fascinated by that story. She had a couple of writings, but there's not a lot known about her.</p><p>East Berlin started to reach out to many other countries in order to establish a communist kind of relationship with other nations. They reached out to nations in Africa and tried to work on science and mathematics scholarships in order to get students from African nations over to East Berlin.</p><p>I was interested to see what challenges an individual woman of color in this country, [who was] surrounded by other men [had] because lord knows...</p><p>In reading this script for the second season, I got really pissed at Alan in the beginning because I was like, "You are full-on taking advantage of this Black woman's life and risking it as well. And on top of it, it is your grandmother. You're not taking the care and consideration. If a white man is kissing you in the hallway, what is the risk that's around there? Not necessarily for him more for you." </p><p>In East Berlin, I just found myself being like, he is running rampant and he needs to take a step back. Ultimately, it's an interesting storyline but I was frustrated with that one.</p><h2>Charlie Barnett said he pushed for more uncomfortable scenes between Agnes and the police to make it more realistic</h2><div type="image" title="Russian Doll" height="2394" width="3191" msid="91009596" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Whenever it comes to time traveling with people of color, it can be nerve-wracking.</strong></p><p>It's dangerous. You feel like, "Oh shit, where are we gonna go? And what's gonna happen?" Natasha and I talked about all these things. There was a lot of me pushing. I remember one of the moments when the police come and I was like, "Natasha, this needs to be more honest. These policemen are not just gonna be like, "Hello woman. You're so pretty and sweet.'"</p><p>They would not be saying that shit. If they did, it would have an air of "What the fuck are you asking for?" just in reciprocation for me. I, as a person of color in this day and age, am still afraid of those kinds of moments. So how would it be avoided then?</p><p><strong>You were talking about your relationship with Natasha earlier. She is the star of the show, co-creator, and took over the lead showrunner role from Headland in season 2, <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/04/11/in-russian-doll-natasha-lyonne-barrels-into-the-past">The New Yorker reported.</a> What is it like working with her? Do you have like a favorite interaction with her?</strong></p><p>It's hard to pick one story because this show is fucking crazy. We block shoot most of it. So it's always like, "Am I doing the right thing? I don't know where I am. I'm calling home to cry and be like, I'm a failure. What the fuck am I doing?" And then I'm learning that part of that energy and that emotion should feed into Allen. </p><p>I had a lot of fun doing that rave scene with Natasha. She kissed me at one point. We had a sex scene in our first season, but it felt so intimate at that moment in the basement [in season two].</p><p>She's in such a different place as a leader at this point during her second season, so much more comfortable and aware. I believe so much in her abilities and I want to see her go so fucking far. "And of course, any chance to get to mind meld with Amy is something I can't even believe is an option in this life."</p><p>She called Poehler's phone call seven years ago "validating."</p><p>"The idea of getting a phone call like that from someone like her, it tells your negative, self-critical thoughts to maybe take it down for a couple of hours, because some good news has come in."</p><p>Lyonne also touched on what it was like wearing so many hats for the show (she starred in, produced, co-wrote the series, and directed an episode), and said the series has an all-women writers' room.</p><p>"I think for this particular project it would not have made sense any other way," Lyonne said. "It's a story that is so personal to me that the architecture of it wouldn't make sense to hand off. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a father who tracks down his teen daughter (Abigail Breslin) at a hospital and learns she's been infected. He takes her home but her progression into a zombie soon makes things very challenging for family life.</span></p><p><strong><strong>Why you should see it</strong>:</strong> Schwarzenegger delivers one of his first dramatic performances.
