Education start-ups in India seem to be the hottest targets right now, going by the kind of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> they are attracting from local and global investors. A couple of days ago, Delhi-based start-up <keyword id="1974964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Avanti-Learning-Centres">Avanti Learning Centres</keyword> raised an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="948731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="seed-funding">seed funding</keyword> from <keyword id="1894311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pearson-Affordable-Learning-Fund">Pearson Affordable Learning Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="1954796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PALF">PALF</keyword>). Two more <keyword id="6365770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="angel-investors">angel investors</keyword> also took part in the round. Avanti will use the <keyword id="1974977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Seed-round">seed round</keyword> to develop an <keyword id="1974975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Online-offline-learning">online-offline learning</keyword> &amp; monitoring system, create more <keyword id="755302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="educational-content">educational content</keyword> and build new <keyword id="68244" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Learning-centres">learning centres</keyword>. Currently, the <keyword id="1044076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education-start-up">education start-up</keyword> operates stand-alone and in-school centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Roorkee and Puducherry, besides helping the <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> in three Tibetan schools in Uttarakhand and Karnataka. 
 
This is the second investment in India that Pearson has made through PALF, and the third overall since the fund was launched in July 2012. 
 In November this year, <keyword id="1954793" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-education-leader">Global education leader</keyword> Pearson’s inaugural <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/These-2-Peer-selected-Start-upsShared-150K-Investment-To-Boost-Low-cost-Education/articleshow/26512179.cms">edupreneur programme</a>, jointly launched by PALF and US-based investor Village Capital, came to a close with <keyword id="1954794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Experifun">Experifun</keyword> and <keyword id="1467859" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sudiksha-Knowledge-Solutions">Sudiksha Knowledge Solutions</keyword> walking off with a seed funding of $75,000 each. The <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> will enable the start-ups to further develop their low-cost education ventures and assist underprivileged school children. 
 Pearson launched PALF in July 2012 with a capital of $15 million. Investments are made into private companies that offer <keyword id="1974987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Affordable-educational-services">affordable educational services</keyword> and schooling in Asia, <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword> and Latin America. 
 Set up as a <keyword id="456748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="non-profit">non-profit</keyword> in March 2010 by <keyword id="258061" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Saxena">Akshay Saxena</keyword> and <keyword id="1974967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krishna-Ramkumar">Krishna Ramkumar</keyword>, Avanti Learning Centres supports students from low-income families (those with a family income of $5,000 per annum or below) and prepares them for <keyword id="1974989" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="College-entrance-exams">college entrance exams</keyword>, especially the highly competitive engineering and medical entrance tests. Students can study up to 18 hours a week at a centre and need to pay only $20 per month. Costs are kept low as a large network of volunteers and partners, including universities, public schools, policy makers and private sector businesses, help with teaching and administration.

Students are enrolled after a highly selective two-stage process.

Seeders</keyword>, the seed funding network of <keyword id="1975008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Club-Ah">Club Ah!</keyword> It is the network’s maiden investment in India after its launch in the country. Ah! Seeders puts its money into very early stage companies and typically invests in the range of Rs 25-50 lakh.

With this fresh round, Info Edge has put in a total of Rs 71.5 crore and holds around 55.81% stake in Applect (on a fully diluted and converted basis).

<ul><li><keyword id="84792" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rana-Daggubati">Rana Daggubati</keyword> spoke to Business Insider about his latest venture, one that comes straight from the heart. </li><li>Daggubati has partnered with Future Group and <keyword id="173109" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amar-Chitra-Katha">Amar Chitra Katha</keyword> to bring about <keyword id="7482072" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ack-alive">ACK Alive</keyword> - a learning centre in Hyderabad. </li><li>The centre offers 64 courses from Vedic Mathematics to Robotics. </li></ul>Growing up, Amar Chitra Katha has been a part of every Indian’s life for colourful storytelling of India’s mythology. Nestled in the city of Hyderabad, is a mythological learning centre that takes one back to those memories. And at the helm of it is South Indian superstar Rana Daggubati. Daggubati, who brought the world to his notice with his role as the villain in SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus <keyword id="6354370" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="baahubali">Baahubali</keyword>, has partnered with Future Group and Amar Chitra Katha to bring about Amar Chitra Katha Alive - a state-of-the-art learning centre spread over 10,000 square feet for art and design, life skills, performing arts and vedic science and ethics. Daggubati claims it's not just another summer school. The ACK Alive centre offers over 64 courses – a modern take on Indian Gods Krishna and Balarama who studied life skills in just 64 days, he said. The courses range from simple courses like Photography, Creative Writing and Theatre to ones like Vedic Mathematics, Tarot reading and even Kalaripayattu – an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala. “The centre offers an all age group learning. You can come at any age or any time of your convenience and pick up a program that you like,” Rana Daggubati told Business Insider. Daggubati who has been involved in mythological movies like Baahubali, realised that there was no brand holding together all the stories that India’s mythology together like Amar Chitra Katha did. Talking about how the partnership happened, he said, “I was actually working on a different project with the Future Group and was then introduced to the idea of the Amar Chitra Katha learning centre.” While the centre was initially supposed to be built in Mumbai, Daggubati, who is now a director at Amar Chitra Katha, brought it to Hyderabad. Why? Better real estate options, of course! “Mumbai was the first option but we wanted to build something of scale. A centre which can have at least 250 people learning at the same time – in Mumbai it would be too expensive. Meanwhile, Hyderabad has an audience which still has great respect for ACK and still has a large readership too,” said Daggubati. The bringing about of ACK Alive also had a personal connection with Daggubati. The centre is today built on Daggubati’s previous office space. “Converting my previous office into a learning centre was quite emotional as this is where I learnt everything I know,” he said. At ACK Alive, Daggubati himself will be enrolling for a Vedic Mathematics course. The curated courses have seen a great response too, with over 200 families coming over in the first few days of its launch. While there are free classes going on until April 15th, many have already registered. Technology companies don't usually look and feel as geeky as you would expect. Dyson’s new V10 motor for the cyclonic vacuum cleaners But not with Dyson. Walking around the company's facilities in <keyword id="6356662" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore">Singapore</keyword>, you feel like you're amongst a bunch of geeks, who would rather solve equations than sign cheques. Of course, it would be ridiculous to think that Dyson runs only on engineers, but it feels like there's a disproportionate dose of that. The company's Singapore offices have an 80-20 ratio between engineers and other employees - finance, HR etc. Walking in, I found myself in a soundproof acoustic lab, where Dyson tests its products for noise. Here, only the floor reflects sound, while the rest of the chamber is designed to avoid echo. The walls absorb any sound above 100 Hz. Dyson invested £10 million into this acoustic facility alone, where a team of four engineers work, led by Nicklaus Yu, Senior Acoustics and Vibration Engineer for Dyson. As Nicklaus shows us his lab, the acoustic chamber, you can literally feel the glee that only a <keyword id="21698" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geek">geek</keyword> can exhibit when talking tech. Dyson’s soundproof lab He's delighted, in a way that only engineers can be when laymen marvel at their creations. Lab after lab, engineers demonstrated different elements of Dyson's technologies, waxing eloquent about them. And every few sentences, they would stop and remember that it's laymen they're talking to. We eventually found ourselves facing a blacked out room, where future products are being developed, and it's out of bounds for most, including those sitting right in front of it. But, how do you sell geek to Indians? It's no secret that good enough is usually good for customers in India. Most companies have learned that the hard way, accepted that and moved on. Refusing to budge, usually means hurting your bottom line. You could simply make "good enough" products and call them excellent. That's marketing. But somehow, Mason agrees that his <keyword id="2029750" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="purifiers">purifiers</keyword> are struggling against extreme pollution, like what we have in Delhi. But on the other, he's also saying that "the best" still needs to be better, something engineers always believe in and marketers only preach. When <keyword id="603653" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="James-Dyson">James Dyson</keyword> first made his cyclonic vacuum cleaners, he wanted the bin to be transparent. He wanted people to see how much dust his product is picking up, hence proving that they do actually work. At his company, this is called the "clear-bin" moment, and literally, everyone I met at Dyson seems bent on achieving that. When I asked Mason whether his products can ever be "affordable" for India, he basically said they can't. Another admission I've rarely come across. Dyson's discourse has always been that their products use the best components and have the best engineering possible, which drives prices upwards (which is what Mason also said, answering my question). I spent a day at Dyson’s technology centre and here’s what I learned

Backed by a strong profile of entrepreneurial professionals, a new centre for innovation and entrepreneurship in <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> - <keyword id="4057711" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="gopalakrishnan-deshpande-centre">Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre</keyword> - will nurture three entrepreneurial initiatives every year by providing them all the assistance they need to turn their ideas into reality. 
 Three IIT Madras alumni — Jaishree Deshpande, her husband who is an Indian American venture capitalist Gururaj Deshpande and S. <keyword id="6530028" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kris-Gopalakrishnan">Kris Gopalakrishnan</keyword> — have together launched this centre as a future hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. They will be funding $500,000 per year over the next 5 years. The centre will perform the role of an angel investor. Every program the centre seeds will ultimately run on its own if it turns successful. 
 
Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said that the Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre was being created at the right time to give a big fillip to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in IIT. 
 Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman of <keyword id="2602340" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axilor-Ventures">Axilor Ventures</keyword>, said the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem at IIT Madras will be enhanced by the opportunity to learn from the global network of such centres. 
 
“Also, the research community will get the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers across the network, including market and funding access,” he said.

3 IIT Madras alumni will pump $5 million in their new innovation centre in campus to turn entrepreneurial ideas into reality

New Delhi, Feb 29 () Hero MotoCorp Ltd on Saturday said it has inaugurated the first-ever training centre for women at Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Ambala in Haryana. The Centre of Excellence for Women - at ITI Ambala in Haryana will build key skill-set amongst women. Launched in association with the Skill Development and Industrial Training Department, Government of Haryana and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the centre aims to enhance employment opportunities for women in the automotive industry. The industrial training will be imparted to women in a fully functional technician training labs set up under this association, a company statement said. Launched under Ek Pahal -- a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Hero MotoCorp -- the centre will also have a two-wheeler riding training facility for women. The centre is equipped with conventional learning facilities, including a fully automated technician training labs with pneumatic tools and precision equipment, it said. In addition, live cut sections of Hero Engines and other two-wheeler parts have also been installed to help the trainees gain hands-on expertise in latest automobile technologies, it added. Hero MotoCorp inaugurates training centre for women at Ambala

<ul><li><keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> is set to launch an Advanced Technology Center in the Bay Area of San Francisco. </li><li>The company will hire 150 engineers across Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Sciences, Engineering and Product Development. </li><li>The centre will build solutions for electric mobility and connected vehicles, and lead futuristic experiments like autonomous vehicles.</li></ul>Indian ride-hailing unicorn Ola is headed to the centre of all innovation – the Bay Area in San Francisco, to set up an advanced technology center. The company is planning to hire over 150 engineers at the new centre, to develop next-generation technologies in mobility. These engineers will be hired across domains like Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, data sciences, engineering and product development. “The Valley and the talent ecosystem here are very conducive to the development of next-generation mobility solutions. This is also a big step in our journey as a global mobility player, with a mission that talent from around the world are inspired to join us on,” said Ankit Bhati, Co-founder and CTO, Ola. In India, it launched Ola Electric, where it develops solutions to make electric mobility viable at scale. The areas we're looking at are advanced analytics, cybersecurity, automation and machine learning, and continuing attention around artificial intelligence,” Rao explained. As per industry estimates, India has less than 10% of data scientists available globally. Audit firms EY, Deloitte, KPMG plan to add 63,000 digitally skilled professionals

<ul><li>India is moving towards digitizing classroom learning across the country </li><li>The initiative will come into implementation from next academic session — 2019-2020. </li><li>It will focus on several domains including technology, mathematics, science and engineering. </li></ul>In line with its ‘Digital India’ development agenda, the Indian government is reportedly planning to invest heavily in modernising classrooms in India. On Wednesday, the Indian government <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/centre-launches-9-000-crore-plan-to-digitize-education-delivery-1550683075713.html">launched</a> an initiative to bring digital boards as part of a broader digital initiative, promising an investment of ₹90 billion in state-run schools and colleges. Starting next academic year — 2019- 2020 — the initiative will be implemented over three years and cover over 150,000 schools for classes 9th to 12th and “thousands of colleges” across the country, India’s Human Resource Minister Prakash Javedekar reportedly said. "Some 60-70 years back there was an 'Operation Blackboard' because that was the need of the hour then. But the country has progressed over the years, and now we need an Operation Digital Blackboard," IANS reported citing Prakash Javadekar. Its use will initially extend to subjects including focus on technology, mathematics, engineering and science. Overall, the move is aimed at making learning more interactive. Digital boards have been successfully used by many business schools. With analytics emerging as the hottest sector under technology, the initiative will include domains such as machine learning, analytics and artificial intelligence. The overall cost will be shared by both states and centre in a 60:40 ratio, with the centre spending most on the initiative. However, the expenses on colleges and schools will be funded by University Grants Commission (UGC) through loans, <a href="http://education-delivery-1550683075713.html">said</a> the Livemint report. Last year, the ministry had formed a committee under Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras to look into the need of digital blackboards in schools/colleges. (With IANS)

From blackboards to digital boards: India infuses ₹90 billion to modernise classrooms

It is World Youth Skills Day and <keyword id="6569577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skill-India">Skill India</keyword> is also celebrating its first anniversary on the occasion. Skill India is one of the pet campaigns by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is aiming at making India top country for providing workforce.

	India is inching towards providing vocational training to youth of the country, making them learn skills, which will also provide livelihood to them, especially in the rural sector.

	The year 2015-16 has been quite remarkable for India as over 1.04 crore youth were trained under various initiative of ‘Skill India’, marking 36.8% growth compared to the year before. 
	 
	Modi also regards skill development as a national priority and as per experts, through concentrated efforts and more awareness and centres, India can make this mission a roaring success.

	One of the best decisions taken in this regard was creating a separate ministry for Skills, which brought Skills, Vocational Training and Livelihoods as an important means of nation-building to the forefront.

	Apart from the government, many private institutions have been training the youth and imparting various skills. Many have also set up centres and colleges to generate employment and give trained youth jobs.

	There are many success stories that do the rounds in the corridors of such colleges, inspiring many others to participate in Skill India and improve the livelihood. 

	For instance, Skill India is very close to President Pranab Mukherjee’s heart and he has ensured that 1500 employees at the sprawling Rashtrapati Bhavan, get certified under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) component of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), across 18 job roles.

	The program has ensured that the people working at the President’s house get oriented to their job roles, are assessed on their existing skills and then certified basis the National Skills Qualification Framework.
 Apart from the President, ICICI and <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, top employers and companies in India, have also made sure to impart skills.
 <keyword id="3206069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Academy">ICICI Academy</keyword>, a nation-wide skill building initiative, has been improving the employment prospects of India’s youth.

	In fiscal 2016, ICICI opened 11 new centres and more than 25,000 youth were trained at the with representation of women at 41%.

	Now, ICICI Academy for Skills has 22 centres, including 10 centres exclusively for women.

	There are various skills imparted here such as tractor mechanic, lab assistant at diagnostic centres, two &amp; three wheeler service technician and retail sales, communication, etiquette &amp; grooming and financial literacy, etc.

	Meanwhile, Ola has signed several MoUs with different governments to train youth. They have so far committed to training 3.2 lakh youth across these states.

	The taxi aggregator has partnered with the National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation to support entrepreneurship, skill development training and self-defence courses for Safai Karamcharis and Scavengers.- May 2016.

	It also inked an MoU with Andhra Pradesh government and commited investments of Rs 150 crore in the next three years to train youth and provide safe travel. Ola will provide skill development training to 50,000 driver entrepreneurs over the next 3 years.
