Convening war rooms, planning speedy bailouts and raising house-on-fire alarm bells: Those are a few of the ways the biggest banks and financial regulators are preparing for a potential default on US debt. "You hope it doesn't happen, but hope is not a strategy - so you prepare for it," <keyword id="85692" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="brian-moynihan" source="Orion">Brian Moynihan</keyword>, CEO of Bank of America, the nation's second-biggest lender, said in a television interview. The doomsday planning is a reaction to a lack of progress in talks between President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword> and House Republicans over raising the USD 31.4 trillion debt ceiling - another round of negotiations took place on May 16, 2023. Without an increase in the debt limit, the US can't borrow more money to cover its bills - all of which have already been agreed to by Congress - and in practical terms that means a default. What happens if a default occurs is an open question, but economists - including me - generally expect financial chaos as access to credit dries up and borrowing costs rise quickly for companies and consumers. A severe and prolonged global economic recession would be all but guaranteed, and the reputation of the US and the dollar as beacons of stability and safety would be further tarnished. But how do you prepare for an event that many expect would trigger the worst global recession since the 1930s? Preparing for panic <keyword id="153519" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jamie-dimon" source="Orion">Jamie Dimon</keyword>, who runs <keyword id="111830" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jpmorgan-chase" source="Orion">JPMorgan Chase</keyword>, the biggest US bank, told Bloomberg he's been convening a weekly war room to discuss a potential default and how the bank should respond. The meetings are likely to become more frequent as June 1 - the date on which the US might run out of cash - nears. Dimon described the wide range of economic and financial effects that the group must consider such as the impact on "contracts, collateral, clearing houses, clients" - basically every corner of the financial system - at home and abroad. "I don't think it's going to happen - because it gets catastrophic, and the closer you get to it, you will have panic," he said. That's when rational decision-making gives way to fear and irrationality. Markets overtaken by these emotions are chaotic and leave lasting economic scars. Banks haven't revealed many of the details of how they are responding, but we can glean some clues from how they've reacted to past crises, such as the financial crisis in 2008 or the debt ceiling showdowns of 2011 and 2013. One important way banks can prepare is by reducing exposure to <keyword id="6374832" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="treasury" source="Orion">Treasury</keyword> securities - some or all of which could be considered to be in default once the US exhausts its ability to pay all of its bill. All US debts are referred to as Treasury bills or bonds. The value of Treasurys is likely to plunge in the case of a default, which could weaken bank balance sheets even more. The recent bank crisis, in fact, was prompted primarily by a drop in the market value of Treasurys due to the sharp rise in interest rates over the past year. And a default would only make that problem worse, with close to 190 banks at risk of failure as of March 2023. Another strategy banks can use to hedge their exposure to a sell-off in Treasurys is to buy credit default swaps, financial instruments that allow an investor to offset credit risk. Data suggests this is already happening, as the cost to protect US government debt from default is higher than that of Brazil, Greece and Mexico, all of which have defaulted multiple times and have much lower credit ratings. But buying credit default swaps at ever-higher prices limits a third key preventive measure for banks: keeping their cash balances as high as possible so they're able and ready to deal with whatever happens in a default. Keeping the financial plumbing working Financial industry groups and financial regulators have also gamed out a potential default with an eye toward keeping the financial system running as best they can. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, for example, has been updating its playbook to dictate how players in the Treasurys market will communicate in case of a default. And the Federal Reserve, which is broadly responsible for ensuring financial stability, has been pondering a <keyword id="718213" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-default" source="Orion">US default</keyword> for over a decade. One such instance came in 2013, when Republicans demanded the elimination of the Affordable Care Act in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. Ultimately, Republicans capitulated and raised the limit one day before the US was expected to run out of cash. One of the biggest concerns <keyword id="45672" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fed" source="Orion">Fed</keyword> officials had at the time, according to a meeting transcript recently made public, is that the US Treasury would no longer be able to access financial markets to "roll over" maturing debt. While hitting the current ceiling prevents the US from issuing new debt that exceeds USD 31.4 trillion, the government still has to roll existing debt into new debt as it comes due. On May 15, 2023, for example, the government issued just under USD 100 billion in notes and bonds to replace maturing debt and raise cash. The risk is that there would be too few buyers at one of the government's daily debt auctions - at which investors from around the world bid to buy Treasury bills and bonds. If that happens, the government would have to use its cash on hand to pay back investors who hold maturing debt. That would further reduce the amount of cash available for Social Security payments, federal employees wages and countless other items the government spent over USD 6 trillion on in 2022. This would be nothing short of apocalyptic if the Fed could not save the day. To mitigate that risk, the Fed said it could could immediately step in as a buyer of last resort for Treasurys, quickly lower its lending rates and provide whatever funding is needed in an attempt to prevent financial contagion and collapse. The Fed is likely having the same conversations and preparing similar actions today. A self-imposed catastrophe Ultimately, I hope that Congress does what it has done in every previous debt ceiling scare: raise the limit. These contentious debates over lifting it have become too commonplace, even as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle express concerns about the growing federal debt and the need to rein in government spending. Even when these debates result in some bipartisan effort to rein in spending, as they did in 2011, history shows they fail, as energy analyst Autumn Engebretson and I recently explained in a review of that episode. That's why one of the most important ways banks are preparing for such an outcome is by speaking out about the serious damage not raising the ceiling is likely to inflict on not only their companies but everyone else, too. This increases the pressure on political leaders to reach a deal. Going back to my original question, how do you prepare for such a self-imposed catastrophe? The answer is, no one should have to. War rooms and bailouts: How banks and the Fed are preparing for a US default

"Starting January 19, 2022 we will remove Detailed Targeting options that relate to topics people may perceive as sensitive, such as options referencing causes, organisations, or public figures that relate to health, race or ethnicity, political affiliation, religion, or sexual orientation," the company said in a statement. According to the company, it has heard concerns from experts that targeting options like these could be used in ways that lead to negative experiences for people in underrepresented groups. "Some of our advertising partners have expressed concerns about these targeting options going away because of their ability to help generate positive societal change, while others understand the decision to remove them," the firm added. Facebook, Instagram to delete 'sensitive' ads targeting options related to race, religion or political affiliation

This was in line with the Indian government’s larger plan to boost local manufacturing of electronics. Higher duties on components would lead to smartphone companies relying on local production in the country. But this also led to an increase in smartphone prices along with other factors such as the ongoing global chip shortage. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/budget" data-type="tilCustomLink">Union Budget 2022</a> will be announced on February 1 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam, and this year fewer or no increases in component duties are expected from the smartphone industry. According to Hari Om Rai, chairman and managing director of phone maker Lava International, there are two major demands from the industry. One is to not impose any “further increase in component duties in this budget as it impacts our global competitiveness.” The other demand is to create a separate budget for homegrown brands. “We are looking at creating economies of scale to create global competitiveness, [and] value-addition will follow,” Rai said. Lava is among the few Indian smartphone brands that still operate and launch products. Other brands like Intex Technologies and Karbonn Mobiles shut shop primarily due to the influx of Chinese brands in the country. Lava launched its first 5G smartphone ‘Agni 5G’ in India last November. Another Indian smartphone brand still floating is Micromax, which made a comeback last year with new smartphones and wireless earbuds as well. But the majority of the Indian smartphone market is occupied by Chinese brands including Xiaomi, Vivo, Realme and Oppo, according to quarterly data from Counterpoint Research. Another homegrown and Bengaluru-based startup Creo that tried its luck not only in smartphones but a custom OS as well. Founded by former Hike employees, Creo had launched the <a href="https://www.techradar.com/in/news/hike-acquires-creo-the-makers-of-os-centric-mark-1-smartphone">Mark 1 smartphone</a> that ran on Android-based Fuel OS. The company soon decided to end production of the device and focus on Fuel OS. According to Upasana Joshi, research manager, client devices at IDC India, Indian smartphone brands “continue to struggle in comparison to global or Chinese players owing to the large scale of business and acceptability in the market.” One way of helping bring up more Indian smartphone brands would be a separate budget to build “National Champions” according to Rai. “To acquire strategic skills and become global Indian champions have a remarkable potential to create national wealth and become beacons of economic progress for India's long term technological and financial independence. It is highly imperative to develop and bolster Indian champions to bring strategic skills and technology and augment GDP, employment, and foreign exchange,” Rai said. Another expectation is “huge investments to match production, marketing and operational spends in a consolidated smartphone market like India,” according to Joshi. For the smartphone industry in general, <keyword id="10547300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-2022" source="Orion">Budget 2022</keyword> is expected to continue the “push for establishing component factories and making them available locally, along with fewer exemptions,” Joshi added. But we may continue to see smartphone prices increasing even in 2022. “IDC expects ASPs (average selling price) for smartphones to only rise further and peak annually,” Joshi said. Regardless, as per research firm Counterpoint, India's smartphone market revenue crossed $38 billion in 2021 with 27 per cent (on-year) growth, as shipments grew 11 per cent to reach 169 million units. And lastly with the new “smartish” feature phone that works only on 4G VoLTE network, Jio could finally bring an end to the ‘2G/3G’ era. 
 
Smartphone Industry 
We all saw what happened to the telecom sector after Jio’s entry and we can certainly expect a similar kind of disruption in the low-end smartphone market as well. While India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world, almost 50% of the mobile phone users in India still use feature phones. That’s a huge number and a market to ignore. Mukesh Ambani made it clear in his AGM speech that he is looking to capture the feature phone market of India with his new phone, reason why the new phone is specifically designed for the ‘feature phone’ market of India. The device comes with 2.4-inch display with QVGA display, microSD card slot, torchlight, FM radio, supports voice commands in 22 Indian languages, has a panic button and comes with advanced NFC support for digital payments. With Jio aiming to deliver 5 million units every week to consumers across the country, low-end smartphone companies like Intex, Micromax, Lava will have to match up to the new Jio phone that will be sold for Rs. 1500 which will be refunded at the end of three years. The Low-end manufacturers are certain to feel the Jio heat and it may not be limited to the low end device manufacturers but also companies selling smartphones under Rs. 5000. Jio’s new phone is packaged in a way that makes it the perfect device to introduce both smartphone and 4G network to the feature phone market of the country. 
 
DTH Market The DTH industry in India is already trying to keep up with internet video services like <keyword id="128682" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Hotstar, Voot and many others, now the sector needs to watch out for the disruption from Jio Phone. Jio phone will come pre-loaded with all Jio apps including Jio TV, Jio Cinema, Jio Music etc making the phone an all in one entertainment device, meaning Jio Phone can very easily turn into a DTH device in itself by simply topping up for Rs. 309 per month. It’s also important to note that Mukesh Ambani specially talked about one key accessory with the phone during the Jio Phone announcement, he said that Jio phone will come with "<keyword id="4964079" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone-tv-cable">Jio Phone TV-Cable</keyword>" that will allow users to connect their phones to TV, even the ‘non-smart’ TVs. This attachment with the phone is a clear hint that Jio wants the new phone to be an overall entertainment device and not just a phone. And streaming entertainment from phone and blasting it on to TV could potentially be a better deal as it will free the users from setting up expensive hardware and paying costly monthly charges. 
 
As we get closer to the launch date, all these industries will have to get back to their drawing boards and create products that can give a tough fight to the latest from Reliance Jio, the Jio phone. Within a year, Jio has managed to add 125 million subscribers to its network and according to analysts, Reliance Jio with get its next 100 million users from its new feature phone.

Small device, big impact: "Jio Phone to shake up many industries apart from telecom"

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/46358204.cms" /> The last quarter of 2014 was a correction phase wherein the Smart Phone market declined by 4% while the Feature Phone market plummeted by approximately 14% over Q3 2014.The overall mobile phone market stood at 64.3 million units in <keyword id="44708" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Q4">Q4</keyword> 2014, which reflects a sequential drop of 11% over Q3 2014 and an annual drop of 5%. 
 The study conducted by <keyword id="668267" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="International-Data-Corporation">International Data Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="6377157" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IDC">IDC</keyword>) India Smart Phone market observed shipment contraction in Q4 for the first time ever (quarter on quarter basis). This was largely owing to a high channel inventory at the beginning of the quarter amongst general trade which in turn was caused by the surge witnessed in online sales during festive season. 
 
Feature Phone to Smart Phone migration trend is clearly visible. Smart Phones formed a healthy 35% of the overall mobile business in Q4 2014, which is up by 13% from a year ago i.e. Q4 2013. 
 
“Smart Phone vendors are quick in gauging the consumer demand for 4G handsets. In percentage terms, 4G handsets are still in single digit. But vendors who are not yet ready with the 4G portfolio are likely to miss the next wave of Smart Phone growth story.” says Karan Thakkar, Senior Market Analyst, IDC India. 
 Shipment contribution from vendors like Asus, Microsoft and <keyword id="16129" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> has witnessed traction in the recent past. Asus’s growth is somewhat linked to the handset vendor itself. The Zenphone series is always in demand &amp; often the product is out of stock at the retail counter. On the other hand, Microsoft and HTC has more aggressively priced product to offer. 
 
“In the current market scenario there is a drive in demand for products pitched with high specification at low price points. This trend is likely to continue over the next 4 to 6 quarters, post which consumers are expected to turn back to the handset vendors who charge premium for quality,” added Thakkar. 
 
<keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>: Samsung maintained its leadership position in Q4 2014. Apple posted stiff competition to Samsung during this time. “Online exclusive” brands are hurting the brand in the value for money category. 
 
Micromax: The brand witnessed an inventory correction in Q4 2014 owing to high inventories pumped into the channels during the previous quarter. 
 
Intex: Intex did not feature in the top five Smart Phone vendor list until Q3 2014, but the swift pace at which brand has clinched on to 3rd spot is commendable. The retail presence of the brand has seen more than a twofold increase. Focused product launches and media advertisements worked well for the brand. 
 
Lava: Lava has slipped to the 4th spot. However, the brand remains consistent and stable with a good amount of visibility of its distributors. 
 
Xiamoi: Xiaomi’s “online only” strategy has paid off well. Q4 was the first complete quarter for the brand. Even with minor hiccups like temporary ban on a particular handset model, the brand made it to top 5 Smart Phone vendor list. 
 
The overall mobile phone market shrank by 11% qurter on quarter. The steep fall can be attributed majorly to the feature phone category. While Karbonn did not make it to the top five vendor list in Smart Phone category, it continues to remain strong in the Feature Phone segment. 
 
A quick look at the overall vendor share shows the strong presence vendors have in the feature phone market to make it in the top five list at an overall level. 
 
 IDC further anticipates a sluggish Q1 2015. However few global vendors which were in the inventory correction phase until now are likely to exhibit big shipment numbers starting Q1. 
 “Operators are gearing up for 4G network rollout. For vendors and ecosystem partners, greater emphasis on 4G enabled handsets at competitive price points will be the order of the day. End-users’ desire to upgrade and keeping abreast with the latest technology, will continue to drive a strong growth for the Smart Phone market in CY 2015,” says <keyword id="26776" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kiran-Kumar">Kiran Kumar</keyword>,Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India.

Samsung leads smartphone market with 43% in last quarter of 2014

The mobile market in India is flooded with smartphones, a new brand launching a smartphone with a unique feature almost every other day. Adding to it are flash sales and discounts. While much has been said and done, there’s one king ruling the market for ages, though interruptedly and it’s Samsung. 
Samsung continues to lead the Indian smartphone market in the quarter ended June with 24.5 % share on the back of flagship S6 and S6 edge launches but lost a little market share to No 2 Micromax which increased its share to 16.7 %, according to Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research. 
 
As per a news report by The Economic Times, the leading home-bred handset maker regained market share during the quarter mostly due to increase in sales from online sales channel, analysts at Counterpoint Research said. 
Intex, Lenovo and Lava grabbed the No 3, 4 and 5 positions respectively, in the second quarter during which 25 million units were shipped, 34 per cent up on-year and 25 per cent up sequentially, as per the research group. 
 
"The smartphone market regained its sequential growth mainly due to aggressive discounting and offers by the brands, retailers and e-commerce firms to clear out inventory accumulated from previous quarters," Tarun Pathak, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research told the financial daily. The agency tracks handset market shares based on shipments into India. 
 
Analysts expect smartphone demand in online channel to rise as companies race towards launching more 4G LTE handsets. Meanwhile, overall shipments are also set to increase during the second half of 2015 as vendors plan their launches ahead of the festive season. Smartphones contributed close to 45 per cent of the overall shipments in the second quarter this year, says the research report.

There were software tools out there like Tibco and Informatica, but they were pricey. By Mason's reckoning, enterprises were spending $500 billion a year on custom APIs each one recreating the wheel.So he spent three years of his free time on his couch in Malta building an open-source tool called Mule that did took the "donkey work" out of working with APIs, hence the name "Mule."<h2>A volcano changes everything</h2>At first, Mason was running his company from Malta, and practically commuting from Malta to the Bay Area, taking more than 30 trips in about four years, he told us. This phone has been in the news for quite a few weeks now and we must say that the response to the news of this phone has been mind-boggling. While many loved the idea of a phone inspired by a renowned political figure, many said it’s just a stunt to gain popularity and some even said it was a practical joke and the phone would never come to life. Well, the phone is live and kicking, and it is now available in India. 
 
As most of us know, the phone has nothing to do with any specific political party. However, it has been developed by a group of Modi fans from Gujarat, now based in China. They were kind enough to send a phone over for a review and here is what we could make of it. 
 
Looks To tell you the truth, when we first held the phone, it seemed somewhat inspired by <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> Galaxy S3. They do look similar, but once you start using the <keyword id="1904756" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saffron-1">Saffron 1</keyword>, you will find subtle dissimilarities between the two. The new device is dressed in white and a nice silver trim runs along the side of the phone. The front part of Saffron 1 has a large 5 inch screen with a 5 MP front-facing camera above it and the usual feather <keyword id="30450" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Touch">touch</keyword> navigation keys at the bottom.

The rear of the phone hides a large loudspeaker behind a meshed grille at the bottom and a 13 MP camera with LED flash on top. The power and volume keys are placed on the right side of the phone, all of which can be easily accessed using one hand. 
 
Performance The group of Modi fans have put some decent hardware within this mobile. It has a 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 1 GB RAM (which we think is slightly less) and 16 GB storage. A custom UI skin has been used over the <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> 4.2.1 operating system. It does give the phone a distinct feel and the interface is slick to manoeuvre. However, we did get a bit of a lag when we played high-end games and apps. Primarily, the RAM can be blamed for this and the phone could do better with another GB of it.

 Barring that, rest of the features look fine. The company is providing a lot of nice pre-loaded utility apps, such as the ‘Go’ set of apps. One distinct feature of this phone is the Toucher Pro widget. Turn it on and you will get a circular button on the screen in the form of the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> logo. With this, you can access various functions such as screen brightness, rotation, Wi-Fi and more. 
 We benchmarked the phone with Quadrant (a popular testing tool for Android devices) and it managed to score a decent 4,679. That puts it shoulder to shoulder with phones such as <keyword id="16129" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="HTC">HTC</keyword> One X. The camera quality of the phone is not bad either and one can get good images in well-lit rooms and outdoors. Another point of excellence is the battery (but it has also made the gadget heavier than usual). The phone carries a 3,150 mAh battery, which kept it alive for 2 days on 2G network. 
 
Verdict 
The package is not bad at all. The phone can accommodate 2 SIM cards; the memory can be expanded up to 64 GB and users get most of the features that are only available in the premium segment of international phones. 
 Saffron 1 falls in a category that is already populated with products from Micromax, Karbonn and Lava. We feel the company is banking on <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s popularity, which might just be the rocket fuel required for the phone to thrust its way through to the crowds. All in all, a decent phone at a good MRP of Rs 18,000, but one can pick it up for a thousands or two less from the stores.
