It was not renewed for a fifth season.</p><h2>Executive producers Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen previously worked on 'Degrassi'</h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/degrassi-cool-unique-things-about-show-interview-2021-7">Longtime "Degrassi" showrunners</a> Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn are stepping back from the franchise after decades of writing, directing, and producing.  </p><p>Stohn announced the news in a <a href="https://twitter.com/stephenstohn/status/1481692083459084295?s=20">series of tweets</a> that mentioned how proud he and Schuyler are of the new executive producers, Azzopardi and Cohen, who <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1364578/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_12">wrote together</a> on an earlier season of "Degrassi."</p><p><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1770796/">Azzopardi</a> also previously wrote and produced on Freeform's "The Bold Type," Showcase's "Lost Girl," and Fresh <keyword id="11898468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv" source="Orion">TV</keyword>'s "Backstage" along with several directing credits.</p><p><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1321257/">Cohen</a> has worked as a writer and producer on E!'s "The Royals," <a href="https://www.insider.com/cw-riverdale-facts-tv-show-2018-1">The CW's "Riverdale,"</a> and ABC's "A Million Little Things."</p><h2>The format of the show is changing from half-hour to hour-long episodes</h2><div type="image" title="eli and clare in class on degrassi" height="473" width="631" msid="88906454" hostid="261"></div><p>In addition to finding a new home on HBO Max, the reboot is changing the franchise's original half-hour format to hour-long episodes. </p><p>In a joint statement on the series' press release, Azzopardi and Cohen said, "What excites us maybe the most about reviving this beloved franchise is turning it into a truly serialized one-hour drama."</p><p>The franchise has always been fond of two-part, half-hour episodes, and later seasons of "Next Generation" even <a href="https://www.insider.com/degrassi-shark-water-behind-scenes-secrets-interview-2021-7">attempted to make a similar shift</a> into a longer, more dramatic series. But outside of made-for-TV movies, the show hasn't produced true hour-long episodes before. </p><h2>The reboot is being filmed in Toronto this summer</h2><p>WildBrain, the production company behind the reboot, announced that filming for the series will begin in Toronto this summer. </p><p>The show also takes place in Toronto, just like previous iterations, which were largely filmed at Epitome Studios.</p><h2>The previous 'Degrassi' set was sold, so the reboot's will likely be new</h2><div type="image" title="degrassi logo in front of the school at the end of the opening credits" height="1579" width="2106" msid="88906456" hostid="261"></div><p>Some key set and prop pieces from the previous iterations of "Degrassi" were auctioned off <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/iconic-degrassi-community-school-sign-auctioned-off">in 2019</a>, which made some fans pessimistic about their chances of ever getting another reboot.</p><p>With the show now returning in 2023, it's likely that the major sets for the series — such as Degrassi Community School itself and popular hangout spots like The Dot — will need to be recreated or reimagined.</p><h2>There's no cast list yet, but several former stars have tweeted their support for the reboot</h2><p>Actors from multiple generations of "Degrassi" have posted their support of the next iteration.</p><p>Ana Golja, who played Zoe Rivas on "Degrassi" and "Degrassi: Next Class," <a href="https://twitter.com/TheAnaGolja/status/1481705546927517697">quote-tweeted</a> HBO Max's Twitter announcement and wrote, "Soooo….Zoe Rivas is going to be the Drama class TA? ..."</p><p>Daniel Clark, who played Sean Cameron on early seasons of "Next Generation," shared a Hollywood Reporter article announcing the reboot on Twitter and added, <a href="https://twitter.com/TheDanielClark/status/1481703121537703941?s=20">"It's official."</a></p><p>Lauren Collins, who played Paige Michalchuk on "Next Generation" <a href="https://twitter.com/Lauren_Collins/status/1481715032232984577">quote-tweeted</a> the announcement from Deadline and wrote, "If any streamers are interested in the pilot I wrote about this exact moment in my life, it's available!!" with three zany-face emojis. </p><p>Several former stars also commented on the official "Degrassi" Instagram account's <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CYrkiZiLpvs/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">announcement post</a>.</p><p>Miriam McDonald, who played Emma Nelson, commented "Incredible news!" with a series of emojis.</p><p>Raymond Ablack, who played Sav Bhandari, commented, "Stüdz rules! In season four, Brooks was paralyzed after being shot in a school shooting.</p><p>James Hurst, a writer on the show revealed during <a href="https://www.avclub.com/the-cast-and-co-creator-of-degrassi-the-next-generatio-1847839593">an interview with The AV Club</a> for the show's 20th anniversary that Drake (real name is Aubrey Graham) tried to leave the show before season six.</p><div type="image" title="drake degrassi" height="929" width="1239" msid="87041490" hostid="261"></div><p>"There was a letter from a law firm in Toronto, and it was from Aubrey," Hurst said. "It was an odd letter that said, "Aubrey Graham will not return to 'Degrassi' season six as Jimmy Brooks unless his injury is healed, and he's out of the wheelchair." I said, 'Get him down here.'"</p><p>Hurst continued: "He came in and was like, 'What letter? I don't know about that.' And I said, 'All right, I understand. But how do you feel about the wheelchair?' He's like, 'All my friends in the rap game say I'm soft because I'm in a wheelchair.' And I said, 'Well, tell your friends in the rap game that you got shot. How much harder can you get? You got shot, and you're in a wheelchair.' He was like, 'Yeah, yeah.'"</p><p>"He was so nice and apologetic about everything," the "Degrassi' writer added. "He instantly backed down. I was very passionate about it, and I said, 'Aubrey, there's some kid somewhere in a wheelchair, who's completely ignored, who's never on television, never gets represented.' I need you to represent this person. You're the coolest kid on the show, and you can say there's nothing wrong with being in a wheelchair."</p><div type="image" title="Drake as Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi" height="628" width="837" msid="87041491" hostid="261"></div><p>Insider has reached out to Drake's representatives for comment. Drake's co-stars Stefan Brogren, Lauren Collins, and Shane Kippel spoke about the difficulty Drake had with his role after his character was paralyzed.</p><p>Collins, who played Paige, said: "I don't want to speak for anyone, but I think [Aubrey] probably struggled with the idea that he was one of two Black characters on the show, and that he was the one who was winding up shot and in a wheelchair, which obviously is part of a much larger conversation."</p><p>Brogren also said there were conversations about Brooks' injury which led to the character walking on crutches in later seasons.</p><p>Earlier this year, Insider spoke to <a href="https://www.insider.com/degrassi-shark-water-behind-scenes-secrets-interview-2021-7">the cast and showrunners</a> of "Degrassi" about how the series was <a href="https://www.insider.com/degrassi-cool-unique-things-about-show-interview-2021-7">nearly canceled</a> after its ninth season. An executive producer also said previously that Drake <a href="https://www.insider.com/degrassi-drake-rap-on-camera-2021-6">needed convincing</a> in order to do the rap scene on the show because he wanted to keep his music and acting separate.</p>

'Degrassi' writer says Drake threatened legal action to get his character 'out of the wheelchair'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11985148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alison-roman" source="Orion">Alison Roman</keyword> talked to <keyword id="12704087" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-new-yorker" source="Orion">The New Yorker</keyword> about being "canceled" after being accused of racism. </li><li>She compared her experience "to that of a lobster" being boiled in a pot.</li></ul><p>Over a year and a half since Alison Roman was accused of racism after <a href="https://www.insider.com/alison-roman-chrissy-teigen-marie-kondo-food-interview-drama-2020-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">criticizing Chrissy Teigen and Marie Kondo in a May 2020 interview</a> with <a href="https://newconsumer.com/2020/05/alison-roman-interview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The New Consumer</a>, the cookbook author told <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/12/20/alison-roman-just-cant-help-herself" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The New Yorker</a>'s Lauren Collins that it's been hard to recover from the backlash she faced.</p><p>Roman, at the time, said Kondo decided to "capitalize on her fame" by coming out with a product line and described Teigen's Cravings brand evolution from cookbooks to products as "so crazy" to her. Because she only called out two Asian women, and because Roman herself was accused of hypocrisy for having brand deals of her own, the backlash was swift. As Collins writes in The New Yorker, after Roman's remarks about Teigen and Kondo, "two themes emerged: the sense that Roman was both a product and a perpetuator of structural racism in <keyword id="11894142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="food" source="Orion">food</keyword> media, and a wish that her sense of social responsibility was commensurate with the size of her platform."</p><p>Roman issued <a href="https://www.insider.com/alison-roman-apologizes-for-remarks-about-chrissy-teigen-marie-kondo-2020-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a public apology</a> to Teigen and Kondo in the wake of the interview, but the damage was done. Roman took a <a href="https://www.insider.com/alison-roman-newsletter-new-york-times-return-2020-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">temporary hiatus from her post as a columnist</a> at The New York Times before <a href="https://www.insider.com/alison-roman-leaving-new-york-times-column-shallot-pasta-post-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">officially parting ways with the publication in December 2020</a>.</p><p>"I still have not seen a successful story of a woman getting dragged to hell in the way that I was and then coming back publicly and being able to talk," Roman told Collins in the article published Monday.</p><p>Roman said there are only two ways someone can move forward: "slink away into oblivion," or act like nothing ever happened. </p><p>Since the writer's controversial comments were published, Roman launched A Newsletter, which began as a not-for-profit subscription service and has since turned for-profit, according to The New Yorker, with Roman donating at least $2,000 each month to charity. She also started <a href="https://shop.alisoneroman.com/">selling apparel</a> with photos of some of her more popular recipes on them — all of which were sold out at the time of writing — and is working on a new cookbook centered around desserts, according to The New Yorker.</p><div type="image" title="alison roman" height="1333" width="1778" msid="88287677" hostid="261"></div><p>Roman's newsletter initially featured recipes for what Collins called "American-style classics" (shrimp cocktail, cinnamon rolls, and a pseudo-recipe for a hot dog party). Then, in September, Roman shared a recipe with lentils. The newsletter that went along with it included a note about its ties to the South Asian dish, daal. She told Collins that she expected to receive backlash and thought that working with lentils might mean she would be accused of cultural appropriation. Roman told Collins she chose to publish her "Gentle Lentils" recipe because "I don't want to operate out of fear."</p><p>"In my heart of hearts, I was, like, 'You fucking idiot. Don't cook with lentils,'" she told Collins. The YouTube personality said she knew on some level that there was a good chance she'd receive backlash again for publishing a stewed lentils recipe but decided to go ahead, saying in the piece, "Can we all just lighten up? Can I make a pot of lentils? Call it whatever the fuck you want, I don't care."</p><p>She published the recipe and, in an editorial note, called attention to the fact that the lentils she chose to use (in addition to any split pulses or legumes) are also called daal.</p><p>Roman sent the newsletter on September 30 and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CUfeJrVlgM4/">shared her photo and notes on Instagram</a> on October 1. She then edited the post a month later on November 3 with a statement regarding her use of the words "lentils" and "daal."</p><p>"THANK YOU TO ALL WHO LEFT NOTES! THIS IS DAAL," she wrote in the caption. "'GENTLE LENTILS' WAS A CHEEKY NAME MEANT TO DESCRIBE THE CONTENTS / STORY GIVEN IN THE NEWSLETTER, NOT MEANT TO REBRAND THE CENTURIES OLD FOOD SOME OF YOU KNOW AS DAAL, [...] I TAKE NO OWNERSHIP OF THIS FOOD."</p><p>Earlier in the New Yorker piece, Roman described being "canceled" as a surprise. "She compared the experience to that of a lobster in a pot of cold water," Collins wrote. "'You bring it up to a boil, they never know,' she said. gathering at one main place throughout each season — on "Next Generation," it was The Dot, and on "Next Class," it was Lola's Cantina.</p><p>The reboot will likely think up a new hangout spot for the students. </p><p>Given that Spinner worked at The Dot throughout the series, some fans have also suggested that he should be the owner of whatever it ends up being on <a href="https://twitter.com/PaulStans1/status/1481809875793444864?s=20">the reboot</a>. </p><h2><strong>Drake may be involved</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="jimmy brooks playing basketball in his wheelchair on degrassi" height="481" width="642" msid="89309530" hostid="261"></div><p>Drake, better known then as Aubrey Graham, played Jimmy Brooks on "Next Generation."</p><p>In 2018, he paid tribute to his eight-season run on the show with his <a href="https://www.insider.com/drake-reunited-with-the-cast-of-degrassi-in-his-im-upset-video-and-were-freaking-out-2018-6">"I'm Upset"</a> music video, which included plenty of other "Degrassi" stars returning to the set.</p><p>Given his history with the series, and the fact that he's an <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1013044/#producer">executive producer</a> on HBO's "Euphoria," people are already speculating about him <a href="https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/will-drake-be-in-hbo-max-degrassi-reboot-48681893">reprising his role</a> or being otherwise involved with the reboot.</p><h2><strong>The show's popular theme song may be recreated</strong></h2><p>Each episode of "Next Generation" and "Next Class" opened with some iteration of the song "Whatever It Takes," which was <a href="https://genius.com/Lisa-dalbello-whatever-it-takes-degrassi-the-next-generation-theme-lyrics">written for the show</a>. </p><p>"Degrassi" viewers are <a href="https://twitter.com/SW1TCHH1TT3R/status/1481703216828096512?s=20">already wondering</a> if the reboot will create yet another version of this theme or switch the song entirely, as the franchise did between "Degrassi High" and "Next Generation."</p><h2><strong>There might be a new student band at Degrassi </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="spinner playing the drums on degrassi with the studz" height="1794" width="2392" msid="89309532" hostid="261"></div><p>On past iterations of "Degrassi," there were several students bands that ended up playing at school events. </p><p>The first was The Zit Remedy on "Degrassi High," which featured Joey, Wheels, and Snake (who later became Principal Simpson).</p><p>On "Next Generation," there was Downtown Sasquatch, Paige Michalchuk and the Sex Kittens (later rebranded as PMS and Hell Hath No Fury), Stüdz, and WhisperHug.</p><p>Maya's unnamed band was also part of "Next Class." Given the trend, it's likely the reboot will feature at least one new band.</p><p>A fan on Twitter even <a href="https://twitter.com/ura_harrywizard/status/1482048463151972362?s=20">suggested</a> the ambitious idea of reviving all the past "Degrassi" bands for a major battle-of-the-bands plotline. </p><h2><strong>Former endgame couples may have broken up </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="jay officiating spinner and emma's wedding in degrassi takes manhattan" height="1424" width="1898" msid="89309534" hostid="261"></div><p>The reboot may need to find ways to separate couples that ended up together on "Next Generation" and "Next Class" if the writers are looking to explore new romantic plotlines — or if certain actors turn down roles on the reboot.</p><p>This will give the creators a chance to potentially retcon some less-popular, last-minute pairings, such as Spinner and Emma.</p>

It's called the <em>Mannanafnanefnd</em>.</p><p>Daniel Tammet writes about the committee in his new book, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Every-Word-Bird-Teach-Sing-ebook/dp/B01MU6M8XB">Every Word is a Bird We Teach to Sing: Encounters with the Mysteries and Meanings of Language</a>," which was <a href="https://ideas.ted.com/the-curious-three-person-committee-in-iceland-that-approves-and-rejects-baby-names/">excerpted on TED.com</a>.</p><p>Tammet writes:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Every month, submissions from parents or prospective parents reach the committee. On average, between one-half and two-thirds of the names proposed will be approved and duly entered in the official register, which presently counts 1,888 boys' names and 1,991 girls'."</p><p>In May 2016, the committee rejected a couple's petition to name their child Cleopatra because "the letter C has no place in the Icelandic alphabet."</p><p>Iceland's naming committee might sound odd, and unnecessary. It did to me. Then I discovered that versions of these naming rules exist in nations all over the world.</p><p>For example, The New Yorker's <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/08/07/notes-from-a-baby-names-obsessive">Lauren Collins reported</a> that in France, before 1993, names that described "things, animals, or qualities" and "names referring to political events" were rejected by the government. Today, Collins writes:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"[A] registrar is required to accept any name, except one he deems not in a child's best interest, in which case he will refer the matter to a judge. In recent years, French courts have rejected such names as Nutella, Prince-William, and, for a pair of twins, Joyeux (Happy) and Patriste (a phonetic take on Not Sad)."</p><p>Meanwhile, move to Germany and your child's name must <a href="https://blogs.loc.gov/law/2017/08/naming-laws-in-germany/">correspond with their gender</a> - if you want to argue, you'll have to file a suit in civil court.</p><p>In the US, baby-naming laws vary between individual states.</p><p>In California, Governor Jerry Brown recently vetoed a measure that would have permitted diacritical marks (think accents, tildes, and umlauts) in baby names, the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-effort-to-include-accents-dots-other-1507591405-htmlstory.html">Los Angeles Times reported</a>. Texan parents have a lot of leeway in terms of what they can name their child - but Arabic numbers (i.e. 1, 2, 3) are not permitted, <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/news/2017/03/29/georgia-says-allah-texas-name-goes">Dallas News reports</a>.</p><p>Beyond legality, expectant parents have a lot to weigh when naming their child. Business Insider's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-name-your-kids-will-affect-their-success-2016-9/">Rachel Gillett reported</a> that your name may affect your success in life. Consider: If your name is easy to pronounce, you're more likely to attain higher-status positions at work. In honor of their revamped online presence, the magazine has made their archive (from 2007 to present, plus an assortment of older pieces) free to the public for the remainder of the summer. </span></p>

<p><span>John Updike's profile on Ted Williams centers around Williams' final at-bat in Fenway Park but covers the ballplayer's life and relationship with his team and with the city of Boston. <span>"The affair between Boston and Ted Williams has been no mere summer romance; it has been a marriage, composed of spats, mutual disappointments, and, toward the end, a mellowing hoard of shared memories," writes Updike. </span> </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Even the most diehard Yankees fans can appreciate Updike's prose and eye for detail about baseball. Here's Upike on Fenway:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities.</span></span></p>

<h3>2. <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2009/11/30/eitheror?currentPage=all">"Either/Or" by Ariel Levy, November 30, 2009</a></h3>

<p>Levy profiles Caster Semenya, the South African runner who won the 800 meter championship at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin before questions were raised about her gender. The piece examines important issues, like how we consider gender and sexuality, and how these topics relate to sports and to South African culture. Although extensive gender tests by the IAFF - track and field's governing body - ultimately allowed Semenya to keep her gold medal and compete in future races, including the 2012 London Olympics where Semenya took silver, she will forever be shadowed by the 2009 gender scandal.</p>
<p>From Levy:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>But, setting aside the issue of gender, there is still no such thing as a level playing field in sports. Different bodies have physical attributes, even abnormalities, that may provide a distinct advantage in one sport or another. The N.B.A., for instance, has had several players with acromegaly-the overproduction of growth hormone. Michael Phelps, who has won fourteen Olympic gold medals, has unusually long arms and is said to have double-jointed elbows, knees, and ankles. Is Caster Semenya's alleged extra testosterone really so different?</span></p>
<h3>3. <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/06/09/the-running-novelist" target="_blank">"The Running Novelist" by Haruki Murakami, June 9, 2008</a></h3>
<p>Murakami's memoir about his relationship between running and writing fiction is captivating, even if you don't fancy yourself much of a novelist or long-distance runner. Like many great pieces of sportswriting, Murakami's is about much more than actual sports - it precisely details fears and anxieties as universal as marriage, career choices, and quitting smoking. Murakami's also a big baseball fan, and his retelling of a game between the Yakult Swallows and Hiroshima Carp is excellent. </p>
<p>Here's Murakami on running: </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>That's why I've never recommended running to others. If someone has an interest in long-distance running, he'll start running on his own. If he's not interested in it, no amount of persuasion will make any difference. Marathon running is not a sport for everyone, just as being a novelist isn't a job for everyone. Nobody ever recommended or even suggested that I be a novelist-in fact, some tried to stop me. I simply had the idea to be one, and that's what I did. People become runners because they're meant to.</span></p>
<h3><span>4. <a href="http://archives.newyorker.com/?i=2002-05-20#folio=048" target="_blank">"A Man-Child in Lotusland" by Rebecca Mead, May 20, 2002</a></span></h3>

<p><span>Mead's profile on Shaquille O'Neal, at the time the center for the Los Angeles Lakers, brilliantly describes the outrageous life of Shaq both on and off the court. At one point, she describes how O'Neal envisions his future mausoleum, covered with Superman logos, TVs showing his basketball highlights, all with stadium-style seating. The piece is high-quality entertainment because, well, so is Shaq. Here's Mead on Shaq and home improvement:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>Fortunately, if O'Neal is recovering from surgery he will have the solace of various home improvements that are under way in Orlando, where his house measures thirty-six thousand square feet, and faces four hundred yards of waterfront. He has already added an eight-thousand-square-foot gym and a regulation-size basketball court, and contractors have started on the other side of the house, adding a new swimming pool and another nine thousand square feet of living space, including seven new bedrooms (O'Neal already has a master bedroom with a circular bed measuring twenty feet across), a recreation room, a cigar room, a movie theatre, and a private dance club with a state-of-the-art d.j. booth.</span></span></p>
<h3><span>5. <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1955/10/08/ahab-and-nemesis?currentPage=all" target="_blank">"Ahab and Nemesis" by A.J. Liebling, October 8, 1955</a></span></h3>
<p>Liebling is one of the great 20th century sportswriters, best known for his pieces in The New Yorker on boxing. "Ahab and Nemesis" details Rocky Marciano versus Archie Moore at Yankee Stadium, one of the premier fights in America's golden age of boxing. It's a fight of intellect versus force - Moore, the crafty fighter, trading blows with Marciano, the hard-hitting champion of the world. As he watches the fight, Liebling references everything from Moby Dick to Don Giovanni to Winston Churchill, and the combination of high- and low-brow allusions mixed with brilliant boxing details make Liebling himself as much of a character in the piece as any fighter. </p>
<p>Here's Liebling describing Marciano entering the ring:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">At about ten-thirty, the champion and his faction entered the ring. It is not customary for the champion to come in first, but Marciano has never been a stickler for protocol. He is a humble, kindly fellow, who even now will approach an acquaintance on the street and say bashfully, "Remember me? I'm Rocky Marciano." The champion doesn't mind waiting five or ten minutes to give anybody a punch in the nose.</p>
<h3><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">6. <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/09/02/the-third-man-8?currentPage=all" target="_blank">"The Third Man" by Lauren Collins, September 2, 2013</a></span></h3>

<p>Collins' profile on Novak Djokovic spans his rise from humble beginnings in Serbia to the third best player in world tennis but perennially overshadowed by the historic rivalry between Federer and Nadal. At the time of the article, Djokovic had just begun to emerge from these shadows, but Collins wonders if he'll ever act like a champion in the way both Nadal and Federer have. Over the course of the piece Collins dazzles with her details on Djokovic, whose as polarizing as he is dominant:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He bounces the ball a million times before he serves. His play is plasmatic. He seems to flow toward the corners of the court. He is an origami man, folding at the waist to dig up a drop shot, starfishing for a high forehand return, cocking his leg behind his head in an arabesque as he blasts a backhand down the line. He lunges, he dives, he beats his pecs. He once yelled-in Serbian-"Now you all will suck my dick!"</span></p>
<h3><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">7. <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/05/26/the-yips">"The Yips" by David Owen, May 26, 2014.</a></span></h3>
<p>Owens dives deeply into the malady that plagues many athletes (not just golfers), known as the yips. He begins the piece describing the peculiar golf swing of Hank Haney, the golf coach of Tiger Woods who also happens to have the yips: "H<span>e drew his driver back high in the air while turning to look at the clubhead, took a baseball-like practice swing well above the ball-then, immediately, took the club all the way back again and swung," Owen talks to sports psychologists, neurologists, and yip-infected professional athletes in every sport from baseball to cricket to archery. It's a fascinating read:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>Yipping also is usually extremely task-specific. Haney never stopped being a good putter. Knoblauch didn't have a problem throwing from the outfield. Archers who can no longer hit a bull's-eye often have no trouble shooting at bare bales of straw. If the yips and other sports-related movement problems are solely a matter of anxiety, why do they affect only certain motions? And how can a change of target, technique, or equipment sometimes make them go away?</span></span></p>

<p><span><span>Perhaps the most interesting part of Specter's 2002 profile on Lance Armstrong is reading it today with knowledge of how the entire Armstrong fiasco played out. At the time of the piece's publication, Armstrong is at the apex of his career and fame, having recovered from cancer and won multiple Tour de Frances with his Postal Service team. Specter's love of Lance resonates throughout the piece, and it's hard to not shake your head when reading about performance-enhancing drugs and the random dug tests Armstong was subject to. But there's also great writing about cycling, and it's fascinating to remember a time when Armstrong was among the most beloved athlete in sports:</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">In Austin, Lance (other than Dubya, he is the only one-name Texan) has a more devoted following than Bush, Lyle Lovett, and the Texas Longhorns football team combined. One night during my weekend in Austin, I drove over to Chuy's, an informal Tex-Mex place that is one of Armstrong's favorite local restaurants. (It was famous locally even before a hardworking bartender carded President Bush's nineteen-year-old daughter Jenna.) Armstrong has a weakness for Chuy's burritos. </p>
