In addition to his $4.5 million base salary, Kiffin is eligible for a 100 grand bonus every time Ole Miss takes down a non-conference opponent in the Power Five.</p><p>But like so much of the past year and a half, the <keyword id="11896136" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic" source="Orion">pandemic</keyword> muddled things up.</p><div type="image" title="Lane Kiffin stands on the sideline for Ole Miss." height="1403" width="2104" msid="86186656" hostid="261"></div><p>Kiffin tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Rebels' matchup against the Cardinals. Though <a href="https://www.wtvy.com/2021/08/12/lane-kiffin-100-vaccination-rate-we-did-not-make-anyone-do-anything/">he and 100% of his team and staff are vaccinated</a>, Kiffin had no choice but to take in the game from home instead of along the sidelines at the Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A Kickoff game.</p><p>Still, the 46-year-old was "involved in game planning leading up to kickoff" the same way he usually would be, the school said in a release. And with "no change in gameday coaching responsibilities for the staff," Kiffin essentially remained the head coach from afar.</p><p>Turns out his presence wasn't necessary to Ole Miss' success. The Rebels romped Louisville 43-24, and after the rout, Mississippi athletics director Keith Carter <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2021/09/06/lane-kiffin-gets-100-k-bonus-ole-miss-season-opening-win/5749911001/">confirmed to USA Today</a> that Kiffin would still get his bonus payout despite not physically attending the game.</p><div type="image" title="Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral runs the ball against the Louisville Cardinals." height="1666" width="2222" msid="86186658" hostid="261"></div><p>The University itself doesn't actually sign the paycheck. Instead, the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation - a private, non-profit organization - is responsible for Kiffin's $4.5 million salary and various bonuses.</p><p>While the Rebels aren't scheduled to face another non-conference Power Five opponent this season, Kiffin still has more than $1 million on the line in incentives. He'll earn $150,000 for each <keyword id="11898795" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sec" source="Orion">SEC</keyword> foe Ole Miss takes down this year beginning with its fifth conference win, plus he'll be eligible for $150,000 if his Rebels advance to the SEC Championship game.</p><p>Should they win, he'll get $400,000. Whether he has to be there to cash in on the deal remains to be seen.</p>

Lane Kiffin earned a $100,000 bonus for Ole Miss' win despite missing the game due to COVID-19 test

However, it had previously been announced that Kiffin would remain offensive coordinator at Alabama through the College Football Playoff. </p><p>Saban made it clear that the move was the school's decision and made it sound like he just wanted to minimize the distractions.</p><p>"We recognize that this is a very difficult circumstance, in terms of the sort of distractions that you have," Saban told ESPN. "I think it is a very tough management. We just thought it was in the best interest of our players, our program, and for Lane, to assume his responsibilities as the head coach at Florida Atlantic."</p><p>Steve Sarkisian, the former head coach at USC and Washington, will replace Kiffin as offensive coordinator, effective immediately. Alabama has dismissed Lane Kiffin one week before the national championship game

Cox/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>When Florida Atlantic University announced on Monday that it had signed Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to be its new head coach, the college football world scratched its head in bewilderment.</p><p>For one thing, how had a middling Conference USA program landed such a high profile name in Kiffin? For another, why had Kiffin taken the job?</p><p>According to <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2016/12/12/lane-kiffin-florida-atlantic-after-alabama/95343870/">Dan Wolken of USA Today Sports</a>, the answer is a simple one: FAU was the only school that wanted to hire him. </p><p>Considering Kiffin's resume, this may be hard to believe. Just 41, Kiffin has already coached the Oakland Raiders, at the University of Tennessee, and at USC. His time at Southern Cal may have ended in infamy - fired on the tarmac after a 62-41 loss to Arizona State - but in his ensuing seasons running Alabama's offense as Nick Saban's top lieutenant he helped produce a national championship, a Heisman Trophy winner in Derrick Henry, and an undefeated team heavily favored to repeat as college football champs in the coming weeks.</p><p>Common thought had it, then, that Kiffin's success in Tuscaloosa would set him up nicely for another job at a high-profile school in a Power-5 conference next year.</p><p>Wolken, though, reported on Monday that football programs felt otherwise - still skeptical after his various falling-outs throughout his career.</p><p><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2016/12/12/lane-kiffin-florida-atlantic-after-alabama/95343870/">From USA Today: </a></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"As it turned out, Kiffin's cavalier attitude toward pushing boundaries in his one year at Tennessee, the train wreck ending at Southern Cal plus questions about his personal maturity (Kiffin's divorce earlier this year didn't help matters) had all conspired to leave such a negative impression on the industry that administrators largely shied away.</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>Though Kiffin's name was brought up for multiple jobs across the last three years, nearly all of it was speculation and smoke rather than genuine interest in him. One person with knowledge of the matter, who had investigated Kiffin for a job, said reference calls to people who worked at USC and Tennessee basically rendered him unhireable."</span></span></p><p>The closest Kiffin actually came to landing the sort of job many believed he would came - and promptly went - at Houston. After the Cougars lost Tom Herman to Texas, reports swirled that Kiffin was in the running for the opening. Instead, the job went to Major Applewhite.</p><p>Said Houston regent Tilman Fertitta <a href="http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/18247548/houston-regent-tilman-fertitta-says-lane-kiffin-never-close-becoming-cougars-coach">upon hiring Applewhite:</a></p><p>"Lane Kiffin did not show me anything that Major Applewhite did not show me. Sure, he's been a head coach and he's been an OK head coach. Before Kiffin addressed the media, the university's athletic director Pat Chun offered a few words. Most tellingly of all, Chun said this: </p><p>"<span>Kiffin emerged as the coach because he wanted to be the next head coach more than anyone else interviewed," <a href="https://twitter.com/JonSolomonCBS/status/808691808914014209">Chun said.</a></span></p><p><span>Kiffin, for his part, would not admit that he took the FAU position simply because it was a head coaching job. </span></p><p><span><span>"This was not, 'I got to be a head coach,'" he <a href="https://twitter.com/JonSolomonCBS/status/808695785412055040">said</a>. Instead, he said it was because he wanted to build a championship at FAU. </span></span></p><p><span><span>That, frankly, is difficult to believe. Later on, Kiffin did admit that had </span></span><span><span>Owls not offered him the position, he'd likely be back in Tuscaloosa next season. It's worth noting, too that Kiffin's job as the offensive coordinator is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lane-kiffin-salary-at-florida-atlantic-2016-12">more than he will make as the head coach of FAU.</a> The same is true if he'd left to work for Ed Orgeron at LSU.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Another telling quote from Kiffin's presser on Tuesday came when he thanked Saban for taking a chance on him after he was fired at USC.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"My phone was not ringing very much at the time after getting let go by USC," Kiffin <a href="https://twitter.com/JonSolomonCBS/status/808693766567628800">said</a>. "That was a very humbling experience."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>As was the case then, it sounds as though Kiffin's phone was again rather silent this year. And so he took the FAU job, betting on himself and his football brain at the only school that would hire him. As Wolken noted, we'll see in a few years whether the big schools were wrong to pass on Kiffin, or if their skepticism was justified. </span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Toward the end of his press conference, Kiffin was asked about what he told the FAU team.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"<span>You don't get what you want," Kiffin <a href="https://twitter.com/JonSolomonCBS/status/808692706457387008">said</a>. If it wasn't clear before, Kiffin is more interested in taking shots at Tennessee than coaching them again. However, the school backed out of that deal after public outcry over both his resume as a coach and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/greg-schiano-to-vols-now-off-penn-state-scandal-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his links to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State</a>. </p><p>Since then, other coaches have reportedly rejected overtures from Tennessee, including <a href="http://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/football/2017/11/28/ut-vols-mike-gundy-tweets-hes-cowboy-life/903989001/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/ClowESPN/status/935975303251419137?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbssports.com%2Fcollege-football%2Fnews%2Freports-tennessee-coaching-search-shifts-attention-to-nc-states-dave-doeren%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Purdue's Jeff Brohm</a>.</p><p>Kiffin was the Vols' head coach for one season before leaving to take the same position at USC. Former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin used Kim Jong Un to torch the Vols' bungled head coaching search

At FAU, Kiffin will have an average annual salary of approximately $1.0 million, <a href="https://twitter.com/McMurphyESPN/status/808391836121395202" target="_blank">according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN</a>, and his initial salary will likely be less than that. Most head coaches in college football have incremental pay raises built into their contracts.</p><p>Kiffin replaces Charlie Partridge who went 9-27 in three seasons at FAU. Patridge&#xa0;had a salary of $590,000 this past season.</p><p>Kiffin's move comes just three days after Houston surprised many by picking&#xa0;Major Applewhite over Kiffin to replace Tom Herman as their head coach. Earlier reports indicated that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-houston-promotes-major-applewhite-to-head-coach-2016-12" target="_blank">Houston was close to hiring Kiffin</a>.</p><p>Kiffin taking the Florida Atlantic job&#xa0;has many wondering: is head coach of FAU really a better job than being a top assistant under Saban at Alabama?&#xa0;</p><p>Not only is Kiffin taking less money, but head coach at FAU in Conference USA is arguably a lateral move, at best, and possibly even a step down. At Alabama, Kiffin could have continued to learn under one of the greatest coaches of all time, while coaching far superior talent, using far superior resources, all while waiting for a better opportunity at a school in a Power-5 conference.</p><p>On the other hand, let's just say that working under Saban is probably stressful at times. Lane Kiffin took a pay cut to leave Alabama and become the head coach at Florida Atlantic

But at least one college coach didn't see this coming.</p>
<p>In 2009, Jeffery was a high school football player and was in the middle of a fierce recruiting battle that involved three of the biggest coaches in college football at the time, Steve Spurrier of the University of South Carolina, Pete Carroll of Southern Cal, and <keyword id="1885275" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lane-Kiffin">Lane Kiffin</keyword> at Tennessee.</p>
<p>On the eve before Jeffery announced his decision to stay close to home and attend South Carolina, the coaches made their final pleas. When it became apparent that Jeffery would not attend Tennessee, Kiffin changed his tone as <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/1490/a-peek-into-recruiting-with-south-carolina-s-jeffery">told by Chris Low for <em>ESPN.com</em> in 2009</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Kiffin was equally dogged. But when it was obvious that Jeffery wasn't going to Tennessee, Kiffin took off the gloves...According to Jeffery and [Jeffery's high school coach Walter] Wilson, Kiffin told Jeffery that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina."</p>
<p>Of course, Kiffin wouldn't have been recruiting Jeffery if he didn't think he was a good football player. But it says something that Kiffin had little confidence in Jeffery to make it no matter which school he chose and it says something that Kiffin was so quick to turn nasty.</p>
<p>Meanwhile Kiffin was recently fired from USC and Jeffery is now one of the best wide receivers in the NFL making catches like this.</p>

Fired USC Coach Told One Of The NFL's Best Receivers That He Would End Up Pumping Gas

<p>According to the press release, Kiffin was fired on the plane home from the game. The announcement was made at 4:50 a.m. local time.</p>
<p>It's unusual for coaches to be fired in September, but Kiffin is an exceptional case.</p>
<p>He has been on the hot seat since last fall. He oversaw a dark era for USC football where the team slipped into mediocrity amid NCAA sanctions and the shadow of Pete Carroll. Fans were <a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1765781-lane-kiffin-receives-fire-kiffin-chants-during-uscs-shocking-upset-loss">chanting, "Fire Kiffin!"</a> during the first home game.</p>
<p>USC is 3-2 this year, but 0-2 in the Pac-12. They've steadily regressed from Kiffin's high point in 2011, when his team went 10-2 and finished sixth in the nation.</p>
<p>Kiffin was 28-14 as coach. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Not only is Michigan State's Mel Tucker not complaining about NIL, he loves it.</li><li>The Spartans football program has gotten creative in the NIL era, including a new "NIL club" formed by the players.</li></ul><p>Like it or not, college football players can now be considered professional athletes. You can either complain about it or adapt. Many coaches have chosen the former, but Michigan State's Mel Tucker isn't one of them. </p><p>During an interview with Insider, Tucker, entering his third year as Spartans head coach, spoke about how the school is embracing the new name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules that allow players to sign endorsement deals.</p><p>"I love it," Tucker told Insider. "Like, I love it. Like, the crazier it gets, the more it changes, the better for me because I feel like we're gonna figure it out. We're not pushing back against it. We kind of embrace it. We try to anticipate the changes. We're able to be nimble, adapt everything to be able to adjust to whatever is next, instead of saying, 'Oh man, I can't believe this NIL, can't believe the [transfer] portal.' We are just like, 'Hey, what are the facts?'"</p><h2>The Wild West of the NIL is forcing coaches to adjust on the fly</h2><p>The NIL era is still in its "Wild West" years, which has led to plenty of complaints from other coaches. While Tucker acknowledged a learning curve, he doesn't speak negatively about the adjustments that have come and will continue to emerge. </p><p>"Whether it's NIL or it's the portal, we're all over it," Tucker said. "We figure it out fast, and if we find that we're going down the wrong road, we'll just change course and get it going. It's not a big deal. I think it's an advantage for us because we're always looking for what's next anyway."</p><div type="image" title="Mel Tucker" height="1676" width="2500" msid="93668181" hostid="261" sizebytes="214100"></div><p>Technically, using NIL to recruit players is still against NCAA rules that outlaw pay-for-play. However, Alabama head coach Nick Saban accused some coaches of breaking the rule.</p><p>"On the recruiting trail right now, there's a lot of people using this as inducements to go to their school by making promises as to whether they may or may not be able to keep, in terms of what players are doing," Saban said. "I think that is what can create a competitive balance issue between the haves and have-nots."</p><p>Earlier in the summer, Saban specifically called out Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&amp;M, leading to an ugly back-and-forth between the rivals. </p><p>"You read about it, you know who they are," <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oxZKXBvbOI">Saban said at an event</a>. "We were second in recruiting last year. A&amp;M was first. A&amp;M bought every player on their team. Made a deal for name, image, and likeness. We didn't buy one player. But I don't know if we're going to be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it. It's tough."</p><h2>The NCAA's silence is being heard by many</h2><p>Saban also blamed the NCAA for not enforcing the pay-for-play rule, noting that some openly talk about how they use NIL to land top players.</p><p>"We have a rule right now that said you cannot use name, image, and likeness to entice a player to come to your school," Saban said. "Hell, read about it in the paper. Jackson State paid a guy a million dollars last year that was a really good Division I player to come to school. It was in the paper, and they bragged about it. Nobody did anything about it ... Those guys from Miami that are going to play basketball there for $400,000. That's in the newspaper. "If they speak to the players, which they're welcome to do, they're going to see that I've never enticed a player or done anything like that. And [the same] if they speak to the agents. Ruiz, Attorney at Law  (@JohnHRuiz) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1517947722086686720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 23, 2022</a></blockquote><p>NIL opportunities are intended to be something the players can take advantage of <em>after</em> they are established at a program. </p><p>At Michigan State, one of the largest sources of NIL money comes from United Wholesale Mortgage, whose president and CEO is Matt Ishbia, a former Spartans basketball player. <a href="https://www.mlive.com/spartans/2021/09/michigan-state-football-basketball-players-to-receive-500-monthly-stipend-in-new-nil-deal.html">UWM pays all football and men's basketball players a $6,000 stipend</a> each school year ($500 per month) to promote the company on social media.</p><p>Of course, NIL potential can be a persuasive factor for recruits, who may want to weigh the opportunities available at each school, something Saban was quick to acknowledge. </p><p>"We have a great brand at Alabama," Saban said. "So players are certainly — their value there is going to be enhanced because of the value that our brand can help them create."</p><div type="image" title="Nick Saban stands with his arms folded while on the field in 2021." height="1397" width="2000" msid="93668183" hostid="261" sizebytes="90452"></div><p>Tucker also noted that NIL and branding are now a big part of recruiting, even if deals are not being used to "buy" players, which might be a gray area the NCAA needs to work out.</p><p>"The NIL space has changed recruiting," Tucker told Insider. "You talk about academics, player development. But NIL, that's what the kids wanna talk about.... It's like education-slash-career development.</p><p>"'How are you gonna help me beyond football, prepare me for life beyond football? How are you gonna develop me, help me get in position to be an NFL player? Because I'm eligible for the draft three years out of high school. So I'm here now. Okay. Three years from now, four years from now, where am I gonna be? How can you help me build my brand and how much money you think I can make at this school?'"</p><h2>The key to standing out in the crowd is creativity</h2><p>Tucker and Michigan State are not afraid to try new things when it comes to recruiting. This includes taking prospective players out in Tucker's three-wheeled Polaris Slingshot.</p><div type="image" title="Mel Tucker and Michigan State Slingshot" height="1700" width="2550" msid="93668185" hostid="261" sizebytes="429100"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/michigan-state-football-coach-mel-tucker-recruiting-man-cave-photos-2022-7">There is also the house in East Lansing, Michigan, that Tucker purchased to satisfy some of his recruiting needs</a>. Tucker told Insider that he picked this particular house knowing he needed a place to host recruits and their families. </p><p>He even turned the previous owner's art gallery into an indoor Spartans-branded basketball court.</p><div type="image" title="Mel Tucker and Michigan State Football" height="1875" width="2500" msid="93668188" hostid="261" sizebytes="243258"></div><p>One way the Michigan State program has gotten creative in the NIL world is through the players themselves. Earlier this summer, dozens of players announced the formation of a first-of-its-kind NIL "club," called the East Lansing NIL Club.</p><p>The membership-only club will sell passes to fans that will grant them meet-and-greets with players, a private tailgate on game days, and access to player-created content. </p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—1kingbran  (@1kingbran) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1534256303627018240?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 7, 2022</a></blockquote><p>The idea of the club is to go beyond the wealthy donors and give regular fans a chance to access the players without a go-between. In the first year, 4,000 passes will be sold for $199 each, raising $800,000 to be split evenly among all participating players. </p><p>Players at other schools have since copied the program. </p><h2>Other coaches have been vocal about the downsides to NIL</h2><p>Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said NIL wouldn't level the playing field between the haves and have-nots. Instead, it would lead to the rich getting richer.</p><p>"I'm sure other people have said it. I said it day one — you legalized cheating," <a href="https://www.si.com/fannation/college/cfb-hq/ncaa-football/college-football-nil-legalized-cheating-lane-kiffin-comments">Kiffin said before the season</a>. "So get ready for the people that have the most money to get the best players, and there you have it. So it is what it is."</p><p>He also lamented the idea of taking recruiting and on-field decisions out of the hands of the coaches. </p><p>"If you have boosters deciding who they're going to pay to come play and the coach isn't involved in it, how does that work?" Kiffin said. "They just pick who they want and tell you who to play? And when they don't play, how is that going to work?"</p><div type="image" title="Lane Kiffin stands on the sideline with his hands on his hips." height="1333" width="2000" msid="93668190" hostid="261" sizebytes="88884"></div><p>Kiffin criticized how NIL was implemented.</p><p>"We aren't allowed in the current system to manage what they make," Kiffin said about the idea of having a general manager in college football. "We're not there yet, and I don't know that we ever will be. That's just what I said it should be, because that's what any other professional sports, which is what we are now, does ... This was not thought out at all and has created a massive set of issues, which I think when most people thought about it from a coach's standpoint, could've predicted this was gonna happen."</p><p>Saban has supported NIL, noting that his players made $3 million in 2021. However, like Kiffin, he is not sold on how it is being regulated.</p><p>"I don't dislike name, image, and likeness," <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/big-ten-reaches-seven-year-media-rights-deal-with-cbs-fox-and-nbc-for-football-basketball-through-2029-30/">Saban said during SEC Media Days</a>. "I'm all for the players being able to do as well as they can and use their name, image, and likeness to create value for themselves."</p><p>Tucker didn't address those complaints specifically, but he did suggest that some are making too big a deal about how much NIL changes the landscape.</p><p>"It seems like it's a lot different, but it's really not that different," Tucker said. "I always wanted to know from the players, the family, where do you want to go to school? I try to help them lay it out. What are the factors? What boxes need to be checked, and where do you want to go to school? God forbid something happened, you got injured, you couldn't play anymore ... Would you still be happy with these people, the coaches, the support staff? Would you still be happy on campus? Would you still be happy with the teammates? Okay. So we focus on that in recruiting, and then the NIL is just, we're as competitive as anyone else in the NIL space with our players. We just keep to the main thing and keep that focus there."</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57d97257b0ef977f298b562a-1329/chip kelly.jpg" alt="chip kelly" data-mce-source="Dustin Bradford/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Dustin Bradford/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>On Tuesday, the Atlanta Falcons announced that they have hired Alabama's offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian for the same role after Kyle Shanahan left to become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.</p><p>As soon as Sarkisian's move was announced, speculation immediately turned to former 49ers head coach Chip Kelly to become Nick Saban's next offensive coordinator. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Kelly will indeed be considered for the position and that conversations have already occurred in the last two days.</p><p>"My understanding is that there have been some conversations that have occurred between Nick Saban and Chip Kelly," Schefter said on ESPN Radio. "Now, whether or not it is enough to materialize into Nick Saban offering the job, Chip Kelly accepting the job, that's another issue. But I can tell there at least have been some conversations that have gone on over the last 24-48 hours between those two individuals."</p><p>Schefter added that he did not know if Kelly would be hired, but noted that he is a candidate.</p><p>"At the very least, my understanding is that Chip Kelly will be in consideration for that job and we will find out whether or not Nick Saban goes in that direction," Schefter said.</p><p>Kelly enjoyed his greatest success as a coach at the college level with the University of Oregon.</p><p>With Sarkisian leaving Alabama, that means Saban will be on to his third offensive coordinator in just the past two months. 'Swingers' star Vince Vaughn's $5.3 million LA home is nothing like you'd think

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5877f547ee14b6a27b8b5008-1500/ap320111004724.jpg" alt="Sean McVay" data-mce-source="David Richard/AP"><p class="source"><span>David Richard/AP</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>The Los Angeles Rams announced on Thursday that they have hired Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay to serve as their new&#xa0;head coach.</p><p>McVay, who is 30, becomes&#xa0;the youngest head coach in NFL history - a record that was previously held by Lane Kiffin, whom the Raiders hired in 2007.&#xa0;</p><p>In their first season back in Los Angeles, the Rams stumbled to a 5-11 season and fired Jeff Fisher after a 4-9 start. Their rookie quarterback Jared Goff struggled during his first season as a pro, and by all accounts McVay was hired explicitly to make Goff better.&#xa0;</p><p>In August, <a href="http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/08/02/nfl-washington-sean-mcvay-offensive-coordinator-head-coach-kirk-cousins-jay-gruden">the MMQB </a>called McVay a prodigy. The grandson of longtime 49ers executive John McVay, McVay&#xa0;graduated from Miami (Ohio) in 2008. After some time under Jon Gruden's wing, he was hired in 2010 by Mike Shanahan in Washington as an offensive quality control coach.</p><p>From there, he quickly worked his way up to an assistant receivers coach, and then to the tight ends coach. When Shanahan was fired in 2014 and replaced by Jay Gruden, McShay became offensive coordinator. In 2015, he started calling the offensive plays.&#xa0;</p><p><a href="http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/08/02/nfl-washington-sean-mcvay-offensive-coordinator-head-coach-kirk-cousins-jay-gruden">According to the MMQB</a>, McVay is beloved by both his fellow coaches and his players.&#xa0;</p><p>That won't, of course, make his first head coaching gig any easier. After trading up to take Goff first overall last year, the Rams have very few high draft picks this season&#xa0;and a dearth of talent on the offensive side of the ball. The defense is stronger, and Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that McVay will try to recruit veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to lead that unit.&#xa0;</p><p>In the end, it will take a few more seasons before the Rams return to relevancy. But with a 30-year-old coach, in the meantime they'll certainly be interesting.&#xa0;</p><div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Boom! Rams make 30-year-old 'prodigy' Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55dc8d89bd86ef10008b5bce-1200-872/steve-sarkisian.jpg" alt="steve sarkisian" data-mce-source="Harry How/Getty Images"><p class="source"><span>Harry How/Getty Images</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>USC football coach Steve Sarkisian says he will seek treatment after he had to be pulled offstage at a preseason banquet while delivering <a href="http://deadspin.com/steve-sarkisian-apologizes-for-getting-liquored-up-and-1725988506?utm_campaign=socialflow_deadspin_twitter&amp;utm_source=deadspin_twitter&amp;utm_medium=socialflow">a drunken, profane rant about the team's opponents</a>.<p>The incident happened Saturday night at the annual "Salute to Troy" event for donors. <a href="http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13494462/steve-sarkisian-apologizes-behavior-usc-trojans-event">ESPN reports</a> that athletic director Pat Haden "had to intervene and was seen berating Sarkisian backstage afterward."</p><p>Sarkisian issued a statement apologizing the next morning. On Tuesday, he met with the media for the first time and further explained what happened. He says it was&#xa0;the result of mixing alcohol and medication. USC football coach explains embarrassing drunken rant at kickoff event

<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><img src="http://static5.businessinsider.com/image/5229e816eab8ea5728ad5a86-1200-924/will-muschamp-2.jpg?maxX=480" border="0" alt="Will Muschamp" width="480" /><p class="source on-image">AP</p></div></div>University of Florida football coach Will Muschamp and his coaches were forced to return their stock of <keyword id="69300" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="nike">Nike</keyword> game apparel because the items didn't have enough swoosh logos, a source confirmed to <em>Business Insider</em>.</p>
<p>The same demand was apparently made at several other big-time college football programs.</p>
<p>A source confirmed to <em>Business Insider</em> that the University of North Carolina football team was also forced to return its Nike apparel and there is evidence that it happened at several other schools.</p>
<p>Nike was concerned that its swoosh logo would not be visible on the polos, windbreakers, and jackets during television broadcasts because the items originally just had swooshes on the sleeves.</p>
<p>Nike, who <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/threads_and_laces/2013/08/nike-and-adidas-the-sec-wins-again.html?s=image_gallery">will pay the University of Florida $1.8 million this year</a> and also provides $2.1 million worth of equipment to promote the brand, added swoosh logos to the front of the items and then returned them to the team.</p>

During that game, Tar Heels head coach Larry Fedora wore a polo with only a swoosh logo on the left sleeve.</p>
<p>The same situation appeared to have happened with defending champions Alabama. According to a <a href="http://www.uni-watch.com/2013/09/04/nike-puts-it-own-logo-in-the-wrong-place-on-college-football-polos-and-pullovers/">source for Paul Lukas of</a> <em>Uni-Watch.com</em>, they were asked to return their Nike apparel, but not until after they played their first game against Virginia Tech. Like Fedora, Nick Saban's polo had a swoosh on the sleeve and not the chest.</p>

It seems safe to say he will be wearing a polo with a chest logo when the Trojans play on Saturday night.</p>
<p>However, the move did not impact all schools contracted to wear Nike apparel. The University of Virginia was not asked to return anything according to a source with the school. Head coach Frank Beamer and his staff's apparel already had logos on the chest.</p>
<p>It is unclear how many teams were impacted by this move. Nike did not return a call seeking comment. But the seemingly panic-driven demand shows just how important logo placement is and how tight Nike's grip is in the world of <keyword id="1625411" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="college-sports">college sports</keyword>.</p>
<p>While fans continue to debate whether or not Johnny Manziel should be paid a few thousand dollars to sign autographs, Nike can make a few phone calls and force schools to return hundreds of items just because they want to maximize the visibility of their brand and justify the multi-million dollar deals with the schools.</p>
