But an area where AI could positively impact the world is in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-ai-letter-transform-healthcare-medical-field-drug-development-2023-3">medical breakthroughs or quicker diagnoses</a>, especially if it can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/artificial-intelligence-healthcare">reduce burnout</a> in healthcare professionals or scientists. A new Swedish study published Tuesday in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(23)00298-X/fulltext">Lancet Oncology Journal</a> put that theory to the test and found very promising results. Participants had their mammograms screened by either AI or two human radiologists — and AI was just as efficient (if not slightly more) at identifying signs of breast cancer. <h2>40,000 women were randomly assigned to AI screenings</h2>The study used over 80,000 women around the age of 54. A little over half were assigned to an AI-assisted screening, which involved at least one radiologist interpreting the results with the help of AI. The other half were assigned to a standard mammogram screening, with one to two radiologists reading the scans themselves. <h2>AI detected slightly higher rates of cancer with few errors</h2>The AI-assisted doctors accurately detected breast cancer in 28% of patients, while the doctors who did not use AI only spotted cancer in 25%. This meant AI assistance led to 41 more cancer diagnoses overall, including invasive and early-stage breast cancers. Additionally, AI had about the same error rate as the radiologists: The false-positive rate was 1.5% in both groups. <h2>AI reduced radiologists' workload by nearly half</h2>With the help of AI, the study concluded that fewer screen readings were needed and estimated a 44% reduction in workload. According to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/hospital-physician-relationships/29-physician-specialties-ranked-by-2022-burnout-rates.html#2">2022 Medscape survey</a>, radiologists ranked as some of the most burned-out medical professionals. Offloading some of the work to AI can potentially lead to earlier diagnoses of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/breast-cancer/about/how-common-is-breast-cancer.html">one of the deadliest cancers in the US</a>.

<ul><li>According to a Lancet report, every one out of two children with cancer dies undiagnosed and untreated. </li><li>Nearly 92% of the cases have been from low-income or middle-income countries. </li><li>Around 60% of the countries across the globe don’t have cancer registries important for policy makers and planning decisions to decrease cancer incidences.</li></ul>Amid a global crisis of cancer, a recent study has shown that nearly 60% of countries don’t even have cancer registries to record prevailing childhood cancer conditions — resulting in untreated cancer cases and deaths. According to the report in Lancet Oncology journal, childhood cancer goes substantially undiagnosed and untreated. Nearly 45% of children having cancer worldwide never get diagnosed and end up dying due to no medical treatment. This means every one in two children fall prey to <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/fitness/nearly-half-of-children-with-cancer-untreated-study/story-vaNRXfQ7fvc0UtJZqDhR3I.html">cancer-caused deaths</a>. In fact, in the United States, despite having advanced system in place for cancer detection, about 1,800 child deaths were recorded due to cancer this year. After heart diseases, cancer is the second biggest killer in India. As per World Health Organisation (WHO), the cancer cases in the nation will be <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/cancer-crisis-in-india-national-cancer-institute-5598853/">five times</a> more by 2025. As an initiative to step up efforts to curb the growing problem of cancer in the country, India's National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/nppa-india-has-capped-the-retail-prices-of-42-cancer-drugs/articleshow/68186802.cms">capped the prices of 42 medicines</a> that are used to treat different types of cancers specifying that the retail price of these drugs cannot be over 30% of the cost of procurement. Taking into account population projections, it is estimated that there will be 6.7 million cases of <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(18)30909-4/fulltext">childhood cancer worldwide</a> from 2015 to 2030, the report highlighted. Considering the current levels of healthcare systems, 2.9 million cases of childhood cancer will be missed between 2015 and 2030. While a lot of people globally face challenges in medical help and healthcare, the disease’s global footprint has revealed that <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/health/article/1-in-2-kids-with-cancer-left-undiagnosed-globally-lancet/373511">nearly 92%</a> of the new cases registered for child cancer happen to be in low-income and middle-income countries. To cut down on the number of needless deaths universally, the United Nations must prioritise cancer in children to its Sustainable Development Goals, Professor Rifat Atun reportedly said. According to the conclusions drawn from the report, on an average, about 400,000 cases are registered globally every year for child cancer. The registered cases have been about 200,000 this year. Globally, there were 397,000 childhood cases recorded in 2015, out of which only 224,000 were diagnosed — which means 43% cases went untreated. This includes most of the cases of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, adding 75,000 new cases during the same period. Half of childhood cancer cases go undiagnosed, says a Lancet study

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Researchers in Canada diagnosed a <keyword id="48645" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="dinosaur">dinosaur</keyword> with an aggressive type of <keyword id="6396085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bone">bone</keyword> <keyword id="6355291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cancer">cancer</keyword> — the first time a dinosaur has received a confirmed cancer diagnosis. </li><li>The dinosaur died "surrounded by its friends," the scientists said, a finding that may offer insight into dinosaur social structures.</li></ul>David Evans and Mark Crowther figured they had a good chance of finding a dinosaur with cancer. Evans, a paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum, and Crowther, a hematologist at McMaster University, knew that birds — dinosaurs' closest living relatives — get cancer. And other organisms living around the dinosaur era have shown signs of the disease, too. Researchers have even <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-59192-z">found tumors in a duck-billed dinosaur</a>, though they didn't confirm a cancer diagnosis. "Diagnosis of aggressive cancer like this in dinosaurs has been elusive and requires medical expertise and multiple levels of analysis to properly identify," Crowther said in a press release.The pair searched the massive collection of bones held by the Royal Tyrrell Museum of <keyword id="469927" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="paleontology">Paleontology</keyword> in Alberta, Canada. They saw various dinosaur bones with arthritis, fractures, and even tennis elbow. But only one bone had the characteristics they sought: Its top half had an apple-sized lump, with odd growth extending from the knee to the ankle. Their findings about that bone, <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(20)30171-6/fulltext">published this week in the journal Lancet Oncology</a>, offer the first confirmed case of malignant cancer in a dinosaur. The results underscore biological links between ancient and modern animals that could help scientists learn more how diseases like cancer have evolved. <h2>How the researchers arrived at a cancer diagnosis</h2><div type="image" title="Centrosaurus" height="1386" width="1920" msid="77380892" hostid="261"></div>The bone Evans and Crowther analyzed is a fibula, or calf bone, of a Centrosaurus apertus: a Triceratops look-alike that lived 75 to 77 million years ago. To confirm that the dinosaur had cancer, a team of researchers from an array of fields — including pathology, radiology, orthopaedic surgery, and paleopathology — x-rayed the bone and studied its cellular structure under a microscope.They also compared the bone to a normal calf bone from the same type of dinosaur, as well as to the amputated calf bone of a 19-year-old human man who'd suffered from the same cancer they suspected the dinosaur had. At the end of that two-year process, the results showed that the bone was indeed cancerous: The dinosaur was suffering from an aggressive form of osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer usually diagnosed in young people. The dinosaur's tumor was so large and aggressive that it probably broke the creature's leg, Evans said — the bone they diagnosed was missing part of its top. "A similarly advanced osteosarcoma in a human patient, left untreated, would certainly be fatal," the researchers wrote.But in this dinosaur's case, they don't think cancer was its cause of death. The bone was found among thousands of others in a "bone bed" in Canada, part of a herd of Centrosaurus apertus that likely died in a flood. Given that it would have been easy for the sick dinosaur to fall prey to another dinosaur or get left behind, unable to keep up with its herd, Evans think it's possible that other dinosaurs were taking care of it."It gives us unique insight into the lives of other dinosaurs," he said, adding, "it's sad to think this dinosaur had cancer, but at least it didn't kill him — at least he died surrounded by his friends."

"Requiring a cancer warning on coffee, based on the presence of acrylamide, would be more likely to mislead consumers than to inform them," he said in <a href="https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm618883.htm">a statement posted on the FDA's website</a> last week. A final decision on the fate of the warnings should be in by the end of 2018, according to the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-fda-coffee-cancer-20180829-story.html?itx%5Bidio%5D=5747799&amp;ito=792&amp;itq=ab40f443-ae6e-4703-992a-524e7367a647#%20">Los Angeles Times</a>. <h2>We don't have any evidence acrylamide in coffee causes cancer</h2>Acrylamide is present naturally in lots of toasty, roasted foods. The chemical compound is created when chips, bread, coffee, and cookies are cooked at high temperatures through processes like frying, baking, and roasting. It's true that in extremely high doses, acrylamide can lead to cancer in animals. But Gottlieb says "current science indicates that consuming coffee poses no significant risk of cancer."Others agree. "There is no evidence that acrylamide intake is related to cancer in humans," Frank Hu, the chair of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/life/wellness/no-your-coffee-isnt-going-to-give-you-cancer/">recently told The Seattle Times</a>. This is in line with what a group of 23 other scientists <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(16)30239-X/fulltext">determined back in 2016</a> at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, publishing their findings in the journal Lancet Oncology.The ways that cancer develops in humans are complex and not fully understood. It's tough for scientists and oncologists to tease out direct cause-and-effect relationships when it comes to cancer, because (fortunately) humans don't live their lives in a lab, under a microscope. People used to think coffee might contribute to higher cancer rates in part because researchers didn't take into account the fact that many coffee drinkers were also smokers. Small numbers of study participants and inconsistent findings also hampered previous research on coffee. Once scientists started taking those factors into consideration, they realized there's virtually no scientifically sound evidence to date that coffee can cause cancer. Instead, researchers have discovered that coffee-drinkers may derive health benefits from their buzzy beverage of choice. People who drink a lot of coffee, like more than six cups a day, can quicken their heartbeats (and be rather jittery colleagues, to boot).Researchers also warn that people who have been diagnosed with tumors may want to limit coffee intake, because it can make blood vessels larger, and thus feed more oxygen into hungry tumors.Finally, there is some evidence that drinking very hot coffee is not a good idea, and could contribute to<a href="https://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/2016/pdfs/pr244_E.pdf"> esophageal cancer</a>. But that has more to do with the searing hot temperature of the liquid than the brew itself. <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(16)30239-X/fulltext">Oral cancer rates spike</a> in people who drink beverages that are too warm, no matter what kind of boiling hot liquid they pour in their mouths. A cup of coffee isn't going to hurt you more than any other kind of steaming drink. "If you're otherwise healthy, it will not harm you, and it might help your heart and circulatory system stay better functional for a longer time," Molecular biologist Joachim Altschmied <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coffee-heart-health-4-cups-might-be-ideal-2018-6">recently told Business Insider.</a> Altschmied published research in June suggesting that coffee might improve the way cells inside older blood vessels work, making them more youthful and possibly protecting cardiovascular cells into old age.He says that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coffee-heart-health-4-cups-might-be-ideal-2018-6">four cups of strong coffee a day</a> might be an ideal dose.
