Today, on October 25, 2024, Google honoured and paid tribute to the late <keyword id="19897820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood" source="keywords">Bollywood</keyword> icon <keyword id="23680315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="K-K-" source="keywords">K.K.</keyword> (Krishnakumar Kunnath), who made his playback singing debut on this day in 1996 with the song "<keyword id="23680316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhod-Aaye-Hum" source="keywords">Chhod Aaye Hum</keyword>." His voice became a timeless presence in Bollywood, leaving a lasting impact on generations of music lovers. Born on August 23, 1968, in Delhi, India, K.K. studied at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. He initially worked in marketing before fully committing to his passion for music. His musical journey began in 1994 when he submitted a demo tape to prominent Indian artists, leading him to start recording jingles. K.K. was known for his romantic hits like "Dil Ibaadat" and the emotional "Beetein Lamhe." In addition to Hindi, he recorded songs in various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati, showcasing his remarkable versatility. K.K. gained widespread recognition in 1999 with the song "Tadap Tadap" from the film “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”. That same year, he released his debut album, ‘Pal’, which featured multiple hit songs, catapulting him to fame. Over his three-decade career, he recorded an impressive 3,500 jingles in 11 languages and sang over 500 songs in Hindi, along with more than 200 in Telugu, Bengali, Kannada and Malayalam. His contributions earned him six Filmfare Award nominations and two Star Screen Awards, among numerous other accolades. Tragically, K.K. passed away in June 2022 at the age of 53 due to a cardiac arrest. His death occurred just hours after a performance at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata. While initially considered 'unnatural,' an autopsy later confirmed it was due to heart failure. K.K.'s legacy lives on through his timeless music and the hearts he touched.

Docu-series on Yash Chopra's legacy titled 'The Romantics' to drop on Netflix

"I have just started learning." That's Hariprasad <keyword id="1637534" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chaurasia" source="Orion">Chaurasia</keyword>, flute maestro, one of India's most well-known classical musicians and the man who could well have been a wrestler instead. With a humble shake of his head as if trying to get rid of the idea of success, the 84-year-old rushes in with words when asked about seven decades of playing the flute. His journey, he says, has just started and all hopes of perfecting the craft can only be fulfilled in the next birth. "Now I can only hope that something happens in the next birth. But I am happy so many people across the world give me so much love," Chaurasia told PTI in an interview. Chaurasia, who has comfortably straddled the twin worlds of classical and popular music and has composed melodies for films such as "<keyword id="310845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="silsila" source="Orion">Silsila</keyword>" with santoor maestro <keyword id="6432164" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shivkumar-sharma" source="Orion">Shivkumar Sharma</keyword>, is grateful for the adulation he receives from the audience. "Today they come to see me, no matter how well or how badly I play the flute. It is their love for me that brings them here," he said, referring to his advanced age and his battle with Parkinson's disease. "I am very fortunate that I receive so much love, I don't know if anyone else has been loved so much or not. I know of Krishna, but he was only loved by the girls," the Mumbai-based artiste said playfully. Had he continued on the path set by his wrestler father, it wouldn't have been possible to reach where he is today, Chaurasia said. "My father used to tell me that I would beg for food if I continue on this line. But look where I am today and how much love I receive from people. Could this have been possible if I had continued in the field of wrestling?" he asked. Chaurasia was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1938. His father had decided his son would follow his footsteps into the wrestling mat. However, Chaurasia, uninterested and perennially tired after the training his father was putting him through, had other things on his mind. According to the veteran musician's biography, "Breath of Gold", by journalist Sathya Saran, he secretly started learning at the age of 15 from a classical vocalist called Raja Ram in the neighbourhood. He soon drifted towards the more instrumental dimension of it through the bamboo flute that has become synonymous with the maestro. It was only when he was to leave for a job with the All India Radio as a performer in Cuttack, Odisha, in 1957 that his father came to know about his son's passion for the flute. "Wrestlers tend to fight every day, whether it is with other wrestlers or with vegetable vendors in a market. But flute requires devotion, service of people, service of the guru, you need to keep the master happy because he is akin to god, it is a line that only very fortunate ones get to carry forward," Chaurasia said. The music composer and director received national and international recognition through several awards and accolades such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the title of 'Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau' from the Government of the Netherlands. Chaurasia was also appointed Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by France. In his long years associated with the flute, Chaurasia has worked with leading names in the world of music, including singer-songwriter George Harrison of The Beatles, English guitarist John McLaughlin, legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar and tabla player <keyword id="8925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zakir-hussain" source="Orion">Zakir Hussain</keyword>. After moving to Mumbai, then Bombay, in 1962, Chaurasia gradually went up the popularity ladder by working in films, including "Jahan Ara" (1964), "<keyword id="30732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="umrao-jaan" source="Orion">Umrao Jaan</keyword>" (1981), and "Hero" (1983), playing an interlude here and there. The iconic tune played by actor Bharat Bhushan and then Jackie Shroff playing his son in Subhash Ghai's "Hero" overnight became Chaurasia's calling card and is still remembered. Even though Chaurasia and Sharma worked in several films together, it was only with Yash Chopra's romance drama "Silsila" (1981) that both artistes came to be known as Shiv-Hari, a music director duo that delivered blockbuster music film after film. Talking about the films of the era, Chaurasia said after reaching Bombay, he saw many talented people and thought of trying his luck in the film industry. "We worked a lot in films and the driving force was always this that if these talented people can make music, then why not us. And by god's grace, it all went well." The Shiv-Hari duo was behind the still remembered music of "Chandni" (1989), "Lamhe" (1991), and "Darr" (1993) among several other films. "Forgive me for saying this but today's films and music do not touch people. Can they make 'Mughal-e-Azam' today, or 'Anarkali', or 'Baiju Bawra'? Nobody has it in them to make such cinema. Today, they discuss it for two hours and make a film in a day," Chaurasia said disapprovingly. The octogenarian artiste still has hope for the younger generation, who he said are more interested in learning than his own generation was back in the day. How are you able to kind of play the game "in Hollywood," and still show up in these spaces as your authentic self?I tell people all the time: I get paid a lot of money to be myself. Obviously, I wasn't always this confident. When you're growing up in Detroit in the 80s and 90s...and there weren't any gay Black men on television nor in the neighborhood. And if they were, they were on the down low. So I never got a chance to see the interactions. However, the latest Dubsmash to have come out on social media is hands down the best one in the list, and we have all the reasons to say so. 
In the latest video shared by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</a>, the lead actor of <keyword id="2133234" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prem-Ratan-Dhan-Payo">Prem Ratan Dhan Payo</keyword>, we see yesteryear actresses Helen and Waheeda Rehman, the most beautiful actresses to bless Indian cinema, showing off their dancing skills. 
 
Helen, who also happens to be the stepmother of Salman Khan, has worked as a dancer in several Bollywood movies, appearing in hit songs like Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu (Howrah Bridge, 1958), O Haseena Zulfowali (Teesri Manzil, 1966), Aa Jaane Jaan (Intaquam, 1969), Piya Tu Ab To Aaja (Caravan, 1971), and Yeh Mera Dil Pyar Ka Deewana (Don, 1978). 
 
Waheeda Rehman, on the other hand, established herself as a leading actress in 1950s and 1960s, the golden age of Indian cinema. She was seen in popular movies like Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1961), Guide (1965), Teesri Kasam, (1966), Neel Kamal and Khamoshi (1969), and Reshma Aur Shera (1971). Later in her career, she started doing supportive roles and appeared in Chandni, Lamhe, Om Jai Jagdish, Rang De Basanti, and Delhi 6. She is also a trained Bharatnatyam dancer.

<keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actor <keyword id="2201" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kangana-Ranaut">Kangana Ranaut</keyword> is in vogue these days; all thanks to her brilliant performance in the latest <keyword id="2600630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanu-Weds-Manu-Returns">Tanu Weds Manu Returns</keyword>. As viewers are making a beeline at the ticket counters to get the coveted ticket to watch the movie, its Box Office Collections have already surpassed Rs 100 crore (till the time of filing this report). 
 
The film has turned Ranaut into a superstar, but mind you, this stardom has not come overnight; she has a decade long career behind her with nearly 30 films and several awards including the National Film Award. 
 
Ranaut seems to have somewhat altered her strategy. She is choosing scripts where female protagonists lead such as Queen, <keyword id="1132893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Revolver-Rani">Revolver Rani</keyword> and Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Her brand equity has gone up as audiences see her capable of delivering a good solo performance and are ready to bet their weekend theatre budget on her. 
 
This is what exactly a brand needs from a celebrity endorser; capable of creating conversations and be a talk of the town. And Ranaut seems to have all this and more. 
 
Known for her psychotic roles (Fashion, Gangster, Raaz, Who Lamhe, Metro), Ranaut has had her share of success and failures. While Queen, <keyword id="3893" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Krrish">Krrish</keyword> 3, Tanu weds Manu, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Shootout At Wadala got a good response, others like Revolver Rani, I Love NY, Rascals and Double Dhamaal did not do well at the Box Office. 
 
Brands have mostly kept away from her barring a few such as Tanishq (in past), Levi's (in past), Emami (Boroplus), Lawman PG3, Himachal Pradesh Tourism, Myntra, Liva, Askme and others because of her inconsistent career graph. 
 
Well, it's a hard fact that she is no Deepika Padukone or <keyword id="6354850" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Katrina-Kaif">Katrina Kaif</keyword>, who are known and proven Brand Champions. However, after the recent success of Tanu weds Manu Returns, she has got into that league where brands will make a beeline for her? Will they bet large on this Himachal Pradesh girl? Let's see what experts have to say. 
 
Emerging or Non-Emerging 
Geetanjali Bhattacharji, CEO, Marketing Services Audit, Spatial Access, finds Ranaut as a winner but has apprehensions about her brand associations as her personality depicted via films has been that of a non-conformist. 
 
"She has clearly emerged as a winner to shoulder ROI of a film both with Tanu weds Manu returns and her past release being Queen. But it will take an intelligent marketer with spine and a highly creative agency partner to generate propositions with a celebrity like Kangana. Huge opportunities aree there but vey few organizations will put the brand proposition in an interesting context with this celebrity." 
 
However, Shailesh Kapoor, CEO, Ormax Media believes that Tanu Weds Manu Returns is bound to make advertisers and filmmakers look at Ranaut very differently. "Till before Queen, she did not have much notice-ability. Because of Queen, she got noticed for the first time as a serious contender to be a top heroine. But Tanu Weds Manu Returns is going to be a pan-India hit, including the mass centers. This will give Kangana the reach that she did not have earlier," he adds. 
 
Even Darshan M, Director, Spoment Ventures thinks that her value will keep on increasing because she is taking up lead roles, delivering in them and people are liking her. "People are getting opinionated about her and that too in a good sense." 
 
<keyword id="233839" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Shukla">Sanjay Shukla</keyword>, CEO, Percept One begs to differ; he says that she is a great actress, but not a brand endorser. "Previously she was doing very serious roles in movies like Gangster, Woh Lamhe, Raaz 2 and now she is taking up roles where she is like a free soul. She has played a twin personality, even though this is good adds to versatility but I am not how brands will look at it. People are definitely liking her, but she is yet to become a commercial star." 
 
Mass Appeal? 
Undoubtedly, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif are brand champions in India. Both these actors are at the peak of their career, and they both command brands in their kitty and audiences at the theatre. Ranaut, on the other hand, is not yet there, but not that far off either. 
 
Bhattacharji points that brand endorsement is not her space and she clearly doesn't aspire to be there. "She addresses a niche. And intelligent investors (whether brand or producers) will optimize that niche instead of going mass." While Kapoor adds that this will depend on her releases in 2015-17. "Mass popularity takes time to build. Just one or two films cannot do that." 
 
However, Darshan M has a different point of view on this. He believes that Ranaut is natural and convincing, while with the other two there is a plastic and unreal attached to which the audience cannot relate. "Be it from a small or big town, a woman can relate to Ranuat but not Katrina because the latter is the perfect example of the Bollywood actresses who look good on screen but most of it is unreal. She has not become that eye candy or the arm candy, but is looking to lead from the front, which is liked by the people," adds Darshan. 
 
Cross Category Fit? 
It is true that Kangana Ranaut has had a very small list of brand endorsements, but experts believe that brands will be closely monitoring the success of Tanu weds Manu Returns and will be definitely considering her. 
 
While Kapoor believes that brands that want to communicate innovation, talent, women power and inner beauty will go for her, Bhattacharji points at radical fashion brands, unconventional jewellery designers, contraceptives, online players (challenger brands) will find her to be a better fit. 
 
Darshan M believes that Ranaut should not choose regular hair creams, but the ones which are quirky, unexpected, serious and reliable. 
 
Going Forward 
Now Ranaut is no Khan or Bachchan. And hence she will have to keep up to it. Audiences forgive a flop here and there, but they do not like consistency in this domain. Revolver Rani tanked massively at Box Office but Tanu weds Manu did not suffer from it. 
 
"In today's film scenario besides the Khans no actor can risk to be in that situation. She has proven herself time and again as a "Female Hero". The audience expectation will only soar high if not same for her upcoming movies. I think after <keyword id="3844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vidya-Balan">Vidya Balan</keyword> she is the only actress who has successfully delivered a film purely on her solo performance," Bhattacharji says. 
 
Today Ranaut is all over the social media, brand promotions and Page 3 and we hope to see her more on the screen, be it through her films or the brand ads that she would endorse.

The celebrity couple is known for showing some dancing moves in the celebrity dance show Nach Baliye. Their stint in the third season of the popular show Bigg Boss made them a household name, with Bhaktyar Irani reaching in the final four. The couple will soon make a comeback on the television screen, with a new show Badi Door Se Aaye Hai by Hatsoff Productions. The show goes on air on 9th of June, on SAB TV.
