<ul class="summary-list"><li>During <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>'s first 'Battery Day' event, CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword> showed off the newest version of its oldest sedan: the <keyword id="1743962" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="model-s">Model S</keyword> Plaid.</li><li>The newest, fastest, most powerful version of the stalwart Model S will hit 60 mph in under two seconds and top out at 200 mph, Musk said.</li><li>The car ran a lap around the famed <keyword id="387214" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Laguna-Seca">Laguna Seca</keyword> track in a little more than 90 seconds, according to Musk.</li><li>The $134,490 car is now available for preorder, and should be available by the end of next year.</li></ul><p>For all the Tesla fans watching the company's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-battery-day-announcements-highlights-elon-musk-annual-shareholder-meeting-2020-9">"Battery Day" presentation</a> and hoping the talk wouldn't focus solely on the gritty details of anodes, cathodes, and lithium mining, Elon Musk provided. Nearing the end of his formal presentation (before a lengthy Q&amp;A, with questions coming from attendees sitting in a parking lot full of Teslas), the CEO threw out the classic "one more thing" — the Model S Plaid. </p><p>As in, a new version of the Model S that will go from zero to 60 mph in under two seconds, reach a top speed of 200 mph, and cover more than 520 miles between charging pit stops. The three-motor, all-wheel-drive take on the sedan — the first version of which debuted in 2012 — will produce more than 1,100 horsepower, enough to run the quarter-mile in under nine seconds. It starts at $134,490, and will hit the market at the end of 2021, Musk said. Orders are open. </p><p>The "Plaid" moniker, for the uninitiated, is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk7VWcuVOf0">a reference to the Mel Brooks movie "Spaceballs."</a></p><p>Even for a company that has long used the instant torque of electric motors to smash customers into seat backs, these are impressive specs. And to top it all off, Musk showed clips from a recent run at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca track in Northern California, where, he said, the Plaid clocked a 90-second lap time that, if verified, <a href="https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/laguna-seca-post-1988">would be one of the fastest ever driven</a>.</p><p>And Musk, never one to settle for the simple boast, piled on: "We think probably there's another 3 seconds or more to take off that time," he said. "We're confident that the Model S Plaid will achieve the best track time of any production vehicle ever. Of any kind, two door or otherwise." </p><p>Come the end of next year, we'll see whether he's right.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Home to motor <keyword id="6360432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="RACING">racing</keyword>'s most notorious corner, the Corkscrew, <keyword id="387214" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Laguna-Seca">Laguna Seca</keyword> in Monterrey, <keyword id="2379" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="California">California</keyword> is a legendary <keyword id="1263805" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="race-track">race track</keyword>.</li><li>First opened in 1957, the 2.2-mile course has hosted everything from <keyword id="78749" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IndyCar">IndyCar</keyword> championships to motorcycle Grand Prix.</li><li>Professional driver and <keyword id="948986" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="IMSA">IMSA</keyword> champion Dane Cameron took us turn by turn through California's most dangerous race track.</li></ul><p><em style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times, sans-serif;">Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p><strong>Dane Cameron:</strong> I think The Corkscrew definitely ranks as one of the most difficult corners in the country. Certainly one of the most unique, by far. Definitely kinda "stomach in your throat" when you come over the top and plunge back down the hill.</p><p>Hey, I'm Dane Cameron. Driver of the #6 Acura Team Penske DPI in the IMSA WeatherTech Series, and I'm here to take your turn by turn around Laguna Seca.</p><p>Here we are, front straightaway at Laguna Seca. This is actually Turn 1, big rise there. Hard braking now for Turn 2. So best passing opportunity onto the race track. Turn 2, Andretti Hairpin as it's known here. It's actually very very low grip here in the center of this corner, so a lot of different lines can take place here. There's kinda one line you would take for passing. A different line you're gonna take for qualifying, when you're trying to get a little bit more speed out of the car. There's actually two different sections of apex curbing, and you'll see me turn the car back to get that exit out of there. Again, trying to get your hands straight, trying to get maximum traction.</p><p>So now we'll go up to 3rd gear, into Turn 3 here. This is a really tricky corner, really tricky entry here. Kinda have to hustle the car from the right side of the road back over to the left. The car never really quite gets straight here. You either feel like you charged into the corner and lost the rear of the car, or you feel like you under drove and then you lose the front of the car. So it's a really tough place, and definitely one of the corners you never feel like you quite get right, or never feel like the car fully wants to cooperate there.</p><p>So out of Turn 3, into Turn 4, under the bridge there. This is a really quick corner, Turn 4. Kind of a wide entry, but it tightens up a lot there on the exit. Fourth gear corner, so it's quite fast. You have to turn in a little bit earlier than you think, get into the grip. And one that really punishes you if you get greedy and you get back to throttle too early. A really difficult corner, especially when the tires start to wear, but one that feels really good when you get quite right.</p><p>Turn number 5 here, another pretty hard braking zone, but you can get pretty deep into here. This corner has a lot of camber so you can really brake pretty deep. There's a little bit of banking there to help you through the corner. And it kind of encourages you to turn early into the corner, but that's the wrong thing to do, 'cause it turns so much more past the apex, there. So you really have to be patient, and this is probably one of the most important corners to have your car placement right.</p><p>The most dangerous section at Laguna Seca is probably Turn 6. Very quick left hand corner, blind approach over a small crest. You kind of give just a small touch on the brake, turn in with speed and you can't see the apex, so you can't see the center of the corner at all. And you really have to be committed to big speed, because it leads up to a really big hill on your way up to The Corkscrew. So typically this is where you would see the most spins, as evidenced by the skid marks that are on the track there, it's pretty typical to be a little too fast, drop a wheel corner exit and be fighting to get the car back on the track and kind of have it spin over to the left. What's most common is to basically go flying off the road when you get to corner exit.</p><p>So I think The Corkscrew definitely ranks as one of the most difficult corners in the country. Certainly one of the most unique, by far. And it's the type of corner that you never feel like you've gotten right. I think what makes The Corkscrew difficult is honestly more of the approach to it, than the actual going down the 5 or 6 story drop. Obviously it's very unique, you don't see anything like that anywhere else in the world. It's a left hand corner at the top there, and untraditionally you start breaking or you start approaching the corner from the left hand side, which at a normal corner would be wrong. Then you kind of drift from left side of the road over to the right side once you come over that crown. But once you get the car slowed down and turned, and you get to that apex there on the left, the corner's kind of about over from there and the big plunge down the hill is kind of the bonus out of the back side.</p><p>You actually use a little bit taller gear, so it's probably slow enough to be a first gear corner, but typically you'll roll that second gear because as you plunge down hill, that 6 stories, that 5, 6 stories down hill, the car gains speed so quickly.</p><p>The load on your body going through The Corkscrew is kinda unique. So typically you're having G-forces side to side on your body, and forward to backward. But what we don't normally see in racing is kinda those vertical G's, as you drop down the hill. So definitely kind of "stomach in your throat" when you come over the top and then plunge down the hill. Everything's a little bit light, you're kinda coming out of the seat just a little bit, and then when you get to the bottom obviously everything comes crashing back down and compresses quite hard, there.</p><p>So Turn 9 here is one of my favorite corners on the track. And it's really tricky, because it's so wide on the entry and then narrows up so much and goes a little bit off-camber at the exit. So off-camber means that the road is falling away from you and trying to pull that car off the road. It's definitely a tricky corner. It suckers you into thinking, "Maybe I can be flat. "Maybe just a little more throttle." This and that. And it always tries to bite you when you get to the exit there, you realize if you got it right or wrong.</p><p>So a really short straight away between Turn 9 and into Turn 10. This again is a really fun corner. It's got just a great flow on this section of race track once you come down through The Corkscrew. Here you do have that camber to help you, but again it's quite easy to overdrive because the pavement is so old. And you're just trying to get it just right. Again, if you're too early into the corner, the front tires are gonna give up and you'll feel like you're running out of race track on corner exit.</p><p>So Turn 11 has got to be the lowest grip corner on the track. You never feel like you can brake super hard, there. And again it's a high use track with some pretty old pavement, so you always feel like you're balancing the <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> in here. Even though it's first gear and very very slow, the minute you turn in the car's kind of fighting you in the rear. It's really tricky, and obviously it's hugely important as well, because you need that really strong exit to get maximum top speed through Turn 1, and into Turn 2. So if you're weak here and you're struggling for corner exit, you're just going to be a sitting duck and you're getting passed when you get down to Turn 2. So it's one of the toughest places to get right, but it's one of the most important for the lap, too.</p><p>So once you've finally got the power down out of Turn 11, start pulling through the gears, climbing the hill over the crest in Turn 1, and start the process all over again for another lap at Laguna Seca.</p>

Professional Driver breaks down California's legendary Laguna Seca race track

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="3904314" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="lucid-motors">Lucid Motors</keyword>, a new competitor in the luxury EV market, posted a video of a preproduction Air sedan tearing around the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in just over 91 seconds. </li><li>Its time of 1:31.3 came just one second shy of the lap time the <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> Model S Plaid — the newest performance version of the Model S — set recently. </li><li>The Air that set the time was heavily modified, sporting wider tires and an extensive body kit. </li></ul><p>Last week, Tesla published a video showing its newly announced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-1100-hp-tesla-model-s-plaid-laguna-seca-2020-9">1,110-horsepower Model S Plaid</a> tearing around the famed WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in just over 90 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars to ever lap that track.</p><p>Now, Lucid Motors — an up-and-coming competitor in the electric-vehicle space — set a personal best of its own, and dropped the video to prove it. </p><p>A video posted on Wednesday showed a preproduction version of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-air-sedan-features-specs-range-performance-tesla-model-s-2020-8">Lucid Air</a>, the company's flagship luxury sedan, lapping Laguna Seca in 1:31.3 — exactly one second behind the Plaid's latest attempt. Lucid achieved the time with a 1,300-horsepower, tri-motor version of the car, according to <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a34135652/lucid-air-ride-along-laguna-seca/">Car and Driver</a>. </p><p>New automaker lap records often draw speculation as to whether the vehicle is mechanically identical to the production car that will be released to the public. In this case, the answer is clear — the Air that set Lucid's new personal best had wider tires, a system of tubes directing air toward the brakes, and a body kit that included diffusers, a rear spoiler, and fender flares, Car and Driver wrote. </p><p>Check out the video below.</p>

And while it generally takes quite some time for Musk's claims to bear fruit, Tesla proved some of the Plaid's chops in <a href="https://twitter.com/Tesla/status/1308618501062422528">a video it posted to Twitter</a> on Wednesday. </p><p>At the event, Musk claimed the Plaid had clocked a lap time of 90 seconds at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Northern California, which would place it among <a href="https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/laguna-seca-post-1988">the fastest production cars ever to hit that track</a>. And on Wednesday, Tesla posted an in-cabin video of the Plaid whirring around the track in 1:30.3. </p><p>For reference, that's just a hair quicker than the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mclaren-p1-gtr-hypercar-2014-10">McLaren P1 hypercar</a> and around three seconds slower than the newer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mclarens-senna-hypercar-pictures-details-2017-12">McLaren Senna</a> — both seven-figure supercars, compared to the Model S Plaid's $134,490 starting price. Musk, for his part, claims that the Plaid can do even better, and that it "will achieve the best track time of any production vehicle ever. Of any kind, two door or otherwise."</p><p>It's worth noting that at most race tracks, <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a29022055/did-tesla-model-s-set-lap-record-laguna-seca/">official lap records can only be achieved during actual races</a>, so we have to take Tesla — or any other manufacturer, for that matter — at its word when it boasts about lap times. Not to mention, there's no guarantee that the Model S Plaid that set the time will be mechanically identical to the one that will hit the market late next year. The four-door electric sedan will be the fastest production car ever made, according to Musk, who said it can go from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-0-60-mph-top-speed-price-2020-9">0 to 60 miles per hour in under 2 seconds</a>.</p><p>The Model S Plaid will bring a new powertrain, as well as an updated interior and exterior to the car line. The delivery date for the vehicle was initially set for February, but was pushed back due to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-chip-shortage-could-last-another-2-years-experts-say-2021-5">global shortage of computer chips.</a></p><p>Last month, Musk told investors at the company's quarterly meeting that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-supply-chain-issues-chip-shortage-insane-difficulties-2021-4">pandemic supply chain issues had caused "insane difficulties" for Tesla.</a> </p><p>"With respect to the Model S and X, there were more challenges than expected in developing the Model S," Musk said in April.</p><p>He cited issues related to developing the car's new battery pack, as well as its top-notch internal electronics. He said the car has a "Playstation 5 level infotainment system."</p><p><keyword id="143134" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Computer-chips">Computer chips</keyword> are used in most electronics, from <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> to dishwashers and gaming consoles. Many automakers have been forced to shut down manufacturing plants due to the chip shortage. Insider Transportation: Tesla's big, bad battery plan 'stretches the bounds of imagination'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>'s delayed shareholder meeting and "Battery Day" kicked off on Tuesday afternoon outside the company's Fremont, California, factory.</li><li>Following a short formal portion of the meeting, CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword> gave a review of the company's progress over the past year with heavy emphasis on software and manufacturing. </li><li>Musk touted new battery improvements that could make manufacturing cheaper and provide more power.</li><li><strong>He also announced a yet-to-be-named future </strong><strong>Tesla</strong><strong> car that will be priced at $25,000 and a $140,000 "Plaid" version of its Model S.</strong></li></ul><p>Elon Musk and other Tesla executives held an unusual outdoor version of the company's annual shareholder meeting and a "Battery Day" presentation on Tuesday afternoon in Fremont, California.</p><p>Among the touted advancements in power technology and manufacturing, Musk announced a yet-to-be-named $25,000 Tesla car was in the works thanks to the cost savings in battery production that will touch all of the company's products.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-0-60-mph-top-speed-price-2020-9">$140,000 "Plaid" edition of the Tesla Model S</a> was also announced, with preorders open now.</p><h2>An unusual setting amid pandemic restrictions</h2><p>The delayed event had severe attendance restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A few randomly selected shareholder attendees watched the proceedings from long rows of parked Tesla cars. Those attending the event responded with honks instead of applause.</p><p>Tesla's vice president of legal, Al Prescott, presided over the business portion of the annual meeting. Investors voted on seven proposals, including the election of three directors, executive compensation, and the ratification of its outside accounting auditor. Four other proposals, including one about Tesla's forced-arbitration policies, are not expected to pass and were opposed by the company's board of directors.</p><div type="image" title="tesla battery day" height="1240" width="2799" msid="78265974" hostid="261"></div><p>The formal stockholders meeting was quickly followed by a year in review by Musk. He touted Tesla's sales growth this year as it scaled up a new factory in China, as well as new improvements to Autopilot, its driver-assistance software. </p><p>A beta version of the software's "full self-driving" capabilities will be released soon, Musk said. "It took us quite a while" to rewrite the entire code base, he said, adding, "It's awesome." </p><p>Musk also touted improvements to Tesla's manufacturing ability, a theme he's said previously is underappreciated by many people: "The difficultly of designing the machine that makes the machine is vastly harder than the machine itself," he said.</p><p>Shares of Tesla sank about 4% to about $408 in after-hours trading during the event after previously declining 5% in trading on Tuesday.</p><h2>The main event: Updates on Tesla's battery technology </h2><p>Tesla's highly anticipated Battery Day presentation kicked off about 2:40 p.m. local time, with Drew Baglino, the senior vice president of power train and energy engineering, joining Musk on stage. </p><p>"The three parts of a sustainable-energy future are sustainable-energy generation, storage, and electric vehicles," Musk said. "So we intend to play a significant role in all three."</p><p>But to get there, the world needs to produce 10 terawatt-hours' worth of energy per year, Musk said. That's 100 times more than Tesla's current production level. </p><p>"Today's batteries can't scale fast enough. They're just too small," Musk said. For electric cars to continue their growth against their gas-powered counterparts, they'll need to continue to get cheaper, he added. That's where Tesla's plan to halve the cost of producing every kilowatt-hour with continuous cylindrical cells, as opposed to those with tabs, comes in.</p><div type="image" title="Tesla battery day" height="1280" width="2840" msid="78266040" hostid="261"></div><p>The new battery architecture can result in five times more energy, a 16% range increase, with six times the power output, Musk said, adding that production was already beginning at a pilot plant. At the same time, costs can be reduced. </p><p>"It will take about a year to reach the 10-gigawatt-hour capacity," with help coming from a recent acquisition, he said. The next goal is to improve manufacturing processes to the point where assembly lines are continuously moving.</p><p>By 2030, when all the innovations are complete, Tesla said it would be able to produce 3 terawatt-hours of energy every year. </p><p>On the chemistry front, Tesla said it acquired a 10,000-acre mining site to produce even more of battery components in-house.</p><p>"There really is enough lithium in Nevada alone too electrify the entire US fleet," Baglino said. </p><p>And when it comes time to put the batteries in cars, Tesla has built a massive new casting machine to integrate the battery's components within the car, much like a plane's fuel tanks are integrated into the wing instead of separate parts. This lowers overall mass and number of parts, while improving the car's structural integrity, Musk said. </p><h2><strong>A $25,000 car is in the works</strong></h2><p>When all is said and done, Tesla said the improvements in battery chemistry and manufacturing would help it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-battery-day-elon-musk-promises-25000-autonomous-electric-ev-2020-9">sell a car for $25,000</a>. </p><p>"About three years from now, we're confident we can make a very compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that's also fully autonomous," Musk said. </p><p>For years, he's discussed bringing down the cost of electric vehicles as a way to decrease the world's carbon output, and the milestone would reflect a massive achievement on Tesla's part.</p><p>Musk said the $25,000 car has yet to be given an official name. </p><h2>Model S 'Plaid'</h2><p>Musk touted a "Plaid" version of Tesla's Model S during the event. The $140,000 1,100-horsepower behemoth will have the "quickest 0 to 60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration of any production car ever" and recently clocked 1:30.3 at Laguna Seca raceway, he said. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>For wealthy entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, the best way to network isn't playing a round of golf but racing sports cars, the New York Times' <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/29/technology/in-silicon-valley-the-rise-of-high-speed-networking.html?_r=0">Farhad Manjoo reports</a>.</p><p>Race-car enthusiasts at big tech companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google have formed groups and rent out local tracks on the weekends. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/29/technology/in-silicon-valley-the-rise-of-high-speed-networking.html?_r=0">Manjoo says</a> that several sources have asked him to join over the last few months.</p><p>The rush of racing apparently lends itself to building relationships, many of which have led to lucrative business deals. </p><p>Jeff Bonforte, Yahoo's senior vice president for communications, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/29/technology/in-silicon-valley-the-rise-of-high-speed-networking.html?_r=0">told the New York Times</a>, "you just bond instantly with everyone else who's doing it. Whoever you're with at the moment, your brain is so happy that it washes over you, and the happiness lends itself to anyone else who is with you."</p><p>The racing is usually done with high-end cars - think Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, and Aston Martin, cars that cost upwards of $50,000. Renting a car for a day, however, usually costs a few hundred dollars. </p><p>Kevin Buckler, a former professional driver who now runs the Aston Martin Racing franchise, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/29/technology/in-silicon-valley-the-rise-of-high-speed-networking.html?_r=0">told the New York Times</a> that he hosts events for tech companies several times a year. Race car driving is the latest hobby for the wealthy of Silicon Valley

<ul class="summary-list"><li>1990s fashion designer Magnus Walker has become one of the biggest names in the Porsche scene thanks to his incredible collection.</li><li>Kept in his downtown Los Angeles warehouse, it features some of the rarest Porsches around.</li><li>Experts have estimated that the collection is worth as much as $7.5 million.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the video.</em></p><p><strong>Magnus:</strong> Hi I'm Magnus Walker. Greetings from my downtown LA Arts District warehouse. For those that don't know, I'm a man with a beard, but I'm also an avid Porsche collector and enthusiast. I describer myself as a builder, driver, collector in fact.</p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>A fashion icon of the early '90's who designed clothes worn by numerous Hollywood rock stars, Magnus Walker has become a name synonymous with Porsche thanks to his $7.5 million collection and his knack for building the most sought after custom Porsches around. Today we take a look at his most rare Porsches, from historical limited releases to one of a kind custom builds from Mr. Porsche himself.</p><p><strong>Magnus: </strong>So the car I'm standing next to here is my 1980 924 Carrera GT. Pretty rare car. Porsche only made 406 of these. Essentially it's the evolution from the 1980 924 Turbo. To put it in Porsche perspective, it's the same motor tuned differently with different camshafts producing 210 horsepower compared to approximately 160. It's the street version of the Le Mans-winning 924 GTS or GTR.</p><p>So I'm standing next to the car affectionately known as 277. Long story short, the number doesn't mean much, but the car means a whole lot more. It started life as a 1971 911 T. T was the base model of production back in that period. By my math I've owned it for 21 years. I started club racing it in 2002 doing tracks such as Willows Springs, Laguna Seca, Thunder Hill and California Speedway. But it's become a pretty iconic car. It's the car I'm most associated with. It's the car I'm most comfortable with. It fits me like my favorite pair of shoes or jeans.</p><p>Other than this car being repainted once in its original Irish Green color, it is bone stock original. We can't really go back in time but I can get behind the wheel of my 1966 911 and it feels like I've gone back in time 54 years to 1966. 80 to 100 mph feels really really fast in that car. It's moving around. It's making a lot of noise. You're connected to it, it's the visceral feeling. 100 in this car feels like you're doing 150. 150 in a new car feels like you're doing 100 because you're so disconnected.</p><p>This is one of my favorite cars, it's a 1978 SC. I call it the 1978 SC / "HR": hot rod. It's a car that I acquired almost ten years ago. It was a former track car, that I converted to more of a street track car. But the good thing about this and the relatability is that it was a "budget build." So this is the do-it-yourself punk rock version of creating a fun car for the street without breaking the bank.</p><p>This is number 310. It's the 310th 911 ever built. This was one of the first half dozen at the Brumos dealership. If you're a Porsche guy of course you know about Brumos. The little dealership in Jacksonville, Florida that had Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood as its number 1 and 2 drivers. Hurley Haywood has won Daytona five times. He's won Le Mans multiple times. And he's really a Porsche racing icon and legend.</p><p>This is a '67 911 S. To give you a little history about Porsche these are. The short-wheel-based 911 debuted in 1964 with a 2-liter motor and approximately 140 horsepower. By 1967 Porsche had debuted the 911 S. Same 2-liter motor, but different camshaft and carburetor setup, now producing 160 horsepower. At one time I owned five '67 S cars. But this is sort of a holy grail car. They're now worth about ten times what I paid for them.</p><p>So I'm standing next to my center row of what I call the early Turbos. These are the '75, '76, and '77 3.0-liter Turbos. 1975 was the birth of the Turbo. Porsche only made 275 samples for the entire world back in 1975. Only 32 of them like this copper brown metallic one are right-hand-drive.</p><p>This car over here is the first U.S. production Turbo, documented by the museum to be the first Turbo sold in America. The rest of the world got the Turbo in 1975. Due to safety and emissions, the original Turbo didn't arrive on the U.S. shore until 1976. This was the first one sold.</p><p>This is a great example of Porsche's mid-engine cars, the 914. That's a fun little project I did for the SEMA trade show in Las Vegas back in November. The interesting thing about this car is that it was literally sort of cosmetically made over in three days, by myself and Felix Holst, the guy I bought the car from. We essentially just sprayed it up with rattle cans and took it to the country's biggest auto show and displayed it with Mobile One.</p><p>Let's talk about the 1990 964. This is my most performance-oriented build to date. Obviously it looks like a 911, but if you come around to the front you'll see that the hood is channeled because the roof is channeled. I had the fenders louvered. This was something that had never been done. These are individually stamped into the fender. I took an early Turbo tail, gave it a sort of gurney flap at the back. And it's running on the 17-inch version of my Outlaw wheels with Brembo race brakes. It has a 3.8-liter RS spec motor built on a 1995 993 motor, with approximately 320-horsepower. The car's kind of subdued in its appearance, but it's the car that the more you look at it the more details you see. And it's a blast to drive.</p><p>So guys, thanks for taking the tour with me. I'm a goal-oriented collector. My new goal for the year is to grow my beard longer. But all joking aside, let's get out and drive. Pedal to the metal. Stay motivated. Never give up on your dreams. Fashion icon Magnus Walker owns a $7.5 million Porsche collection

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BMW Group</span></p><p class="caption">2016 BMW M2</p></div><p></p></div></div>The 2016 BMW M2 is the renaissance of the pure-bred 2-door sports coupe.</p><p>Enthusiasts and automotive journalists have been salivating over the 365-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive Bavarian hot-rod since last year.</p><p>The M2 is, at its core, a muscular six-cylinder engine shoe-horned into the body of a BMW 2-series - the sheet metal of which has been contoured and flexed to look like it's been crushing its New Year's fitness goals.</p><p>There's something else that the M2 nails exceptionally well; it's a driver's car.</p><p>PCWorld's Jon Phillips <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/3033800/car-tech/bmw-m2-first-drive-exhilarating-tossable-and-thoroughly-driver-full.html">summed it up nicely in his behind-the-wheel review</a>, saying the M2 "hits pause on the driverless tech discussion."</p><p>We've been talking a lot lately about the next generation of motoring - all manner of autonomous and self-driving technologies. If you're a superstitious car enthusiast, you'd probebaly think it's all just a coordinated plot to wrest our precious steering wheels away.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BMW Group</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>There's nothing driverless about the M2</h2><p>Quite the opposite, in fact. Phillips fondly describes driving the scrappy coupe as a "throughly driver-<em>full</em>" experience. Cars like the M2 "serve as a blockade against the creeping spread of soulless technology," Phillips suggests, referring to the car industry's steady march toward automation.</p><p>The M2 is a car that's meant to be wound around tight corners, and hustled off the line from a dead stop.</p><p>BMW sets the agenda for the M2 in short order - go fast, and do it quickly. The message is trumpeted from those quad exhaust pipes out back ...</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BMW Group</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>... and that gaping scowl up front.</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BMW Group</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>A rowdy scoundrel</h2><p>During his drive at Laguna Seca Raceway in Northern California, Phillips artfully described how the M2 demands the driver's undivided attention. It's here to be driven. "This is not a car that's designed to wait patiently for algorithm guidance at stoplights," Phillips snarks. A subtle jab at self-driving vehicles that are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/driverless-cars-always-obey-the-lawand-its-a-problem-2015-12">characteristically well-mannered</a>.</p><p>Autonomous technology has one job: promote safety and efficiency. Things like keeping our cars firmly planted, in one lane, and within a safe distance of surrounding vehicles. The BMW M2 is the anti-driverless car

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>The Drive</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Down deep, most car people are magazine people. <br /><br />Even in the digital age, the majority of auto journalists now working revere a pre-digital time when Car &amp; Driver, Road &amp; Track, and Motor Trend created a world of motor-heady enthusiasm mixed with stylish writing.</p><p>Times change, however. Media has moved online decisively, and automotive journalism needs to adjust.</p><p>The Golden Age of print-auto writing may have faded, but the U.S. car market is better than it has been in a decade. That's why Time Inc. just launched a new site, <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/">The Drive</a>.</p><p>It's a risky proposition and a big bet on new media by and old-media company. Previous digital ventures in the auto-journalism space have been scrappy: Jalopnik started out with a small group of oddball car guys and some modest support from Gawker Media. Autoblog was equally bloggy and small-time until it was bought by AOL, but even now, it retains its bloggy, obsessive spirit.</p><p>The Drive, by contrast, is launching this week with a roster of heavy hitters from the media and auto-writing world, including Lawrence Ulrich, who made his bones behind the wheel for the New York Times; and A.J. Baime, who wrote a great book about a legendary race, "Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans."</p><p>The site will also, in contemporary startup fashion, be occupying space in Brooklyn, far from the Time-Life citadel in Manhattan. There will reportedly be a garage, optimized for video production and seeking to create the kind of automotive content that appeals to a generation <em>not</em> raised on Motor Trend's printed comparos but on Motor Trend's YouTube channel - and re-runs of "Top Gear."</p><h2>New York state of mind</h2><p>I dropped by Time-Life this week to chat with both The Drive's editor, Mike Guy (formerly of Maxim, and on the phone from the Frankfurt Motor Show) and Matt Bean, <span>SVP of Editorial Innovation at Time Inc. There were two big takeways.</span></p><p><span>First, The Drive is going to have a strong New York flavor. This is a micro-trend in the car business: the resurgence of New York as a place where people care about cars. Cadillac recently moved its sales and operations to New York and has be re-branding itself as a luxury car maker closely connected with New York in all its fashionable, gritty glory. <br /><br />The Driver is aiming for something similar, defying the long-held belief that car publications need to be based in either Detroit or Southern California (the former for the industry, the latter for the weather and the roads).</span></p><p><span>This links The Drive with the Car &amp; Driver on the 1960s and '70s - they're packaging what Car &amp; Driver did during the heyday of writers and editors like Brock Yates and P.J. O'Rourke for a much younger audience. <br /><br />Car &amp; Driver was a very cool car magazine that was written by people who were under the sway of the New Journalism, which was headquartered in New York (Car &amp; Driver decamped for Michigan in 1978 and no one has ever forgiven them). The Drive is designed to explore the New Journalism of now: dynamic digital storytelling.</span></p><p><span>Jalopnik tried to do something like this when it started out in the mid-2000s, blending snappy sentences with an compulsive desire to embrace the Internet's meme-making machine. Jalopnik continues to feature very stylish and opinionated writers in the auto-blogosphere, but The Drive is pushing the revival of this type of car writing in a much better capitalized, less outsider-y direction.</span></p><p><span>Second, The Drive is going to stress a throwback affection for words.</span></p><p><span>Will it work? Well, The Drive does check some boxes. It has a feed for up-to-the-minute automotive news, and it also isn't shying away from big, high-impact visual features. In digital car coverage it's extremely important to <em>show the cars. </em>And the showing won't be limited to photos. There will be video and lots of it.</span></p><h2><span>Creative car writing</span></h2><p><span>What's interspersed with that is a slightly mixed bag at the moment. <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/144/cadillac-ats-v-checkmate-for-bmws-bahn-burning-m3">Ulrich's review of the Cadillac ATS-V</a>, a 464-horsepower sports coupe intended to steal share from BMW, is punchy and thrusty and authoritative, if not really groundbreaking. <br /><br />But there is this line: "<span>Once you've snuggled into the Caddy's rib-sticking Recaro buckets, caressed the faux-suede steering wheel and toggled that shifter, you're fresh out of interior talking points." <br /><br />Those are fun words to read, for sure.</span></span></p><p><span><span><a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/198/the-ford-shelby-gt350-mustang-is-an-8-cylinder-kick-in-the-nuts">Baime's </a>take on the new Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is ripped from the track - Laguna Seca in California - but a tad workmanlike in execution. <br /><br /> "Th<span>ere are but a few perfect moments in life," Baime writes. "All your senses become electrified, and you feel like you can see the world and where you fit into it with immaculate clarity. This moment is called </span><em>ecstasy."</em></span></span></p><p><span><span>Guy <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/144/cadillac-ats-v-checkmate-for-bmws-bahn-burning-m3">shows off some chops at the keyboard</a>, with his investigation of the new Mazda MX-5 Miata. <br /><br />"[T]<span>he Mazda eagerly pursues its limits at speeds that don't threaten your license, life or limb," he writes. "It's a glider, not a fighter. As it does on track, where skilled owners routinely embarrass rookies in more powerful cars, the Mazda rewards those who can carry momentum through curves."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Writer-large-Brett Burke deliveries some elegant comparisons, <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/161/heavy-breathing-in-the-ferrari-488-gtb">in response to a drive of the new Ferrari 488 GTB</a>. "<span>Flooring a Bugatti Veyron pulverizes your senses. Flooring a Lamborghini Aventador terrorizes them. Flooring the 488 releases a flood of endorphins, fight </span><em>and</em><span> flight.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>The Drive</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span>And <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/208/how-to-get-dumped-and-crash-a-bmw-5-series">Max Prince's post </a>about wrecking his 1997 BMW contains this: "<span>Just before winter, I had a drag-out argument with my then-girlfriend, mostly because she didn't realize we were dating. On the drive home, I listened to Tom Waits and thought about buying a piano. Unrequited love is a bitch. So are dump trucks." <br /><br />Prince is a senior editor at The Drive, and that kind of prose mainlines what senior eds at Car &amp; Driver routinely produced, lightly gonzo with a healthy dash of self-deprecation.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>But the real tell that The Drive is spiritually connected to the car writing of the '60s and '70s comes from <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/195/mario-andretti-and-the-brutal-magic-of-monza">a standout feature from racing legend Mario Andretti</a> about the tragic glory of his first Formula 1 World Championship in 1978 (he was the last American to pull this off), when he won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, but lost his friend Ronnie <span>Peterson to injuries sustained in a crash. The best car publications always reserve space to remind us that the men and women who race cars are miles above anyone who merely writes about cars. The Drive is no different.</span></span></span></span></p><h2><span><span><span><span>Bucking a trend</span></span></span></span></h2><p><span><span><span><span>The site is bucking at least one online-media trend, simply because it's so big (its launching with dozens of stories, after being in stealth mode for months). This makes it a fully fledged play for a large audience, rather than an attempt to capture a niche readership, something that enthusiast sites like Hodinkee have done for watch nuts and that numerous men's style blogs have done for classic menswear and heritage made-in-USA products. </span></span></span></span></p><p>Guy and Bean are optimistic that the readers will come and come in force. And at launch, they've certainly made good on giving those readers something to read. <br /><br />It remains to be seen whether that aspect of The Drive will survive.
